#460 How to Drive Technology Adoption in Your Construction Business (ft. Dr. Anna Hunter)

In this episode,Logan Shinholser interviews Dr. Anna Hunter, Director of Learning & Development at JobTread, to unpack how human behavior directly impacts digital adoption in construction companies. Anna explains why technology is only as effective as its implementation, how to create true team buy-in, and how contractors can avoid wasting thousands on unused tools. The conversation dives into key behavioral strategies like building software champions, structuring healthy incentives, and identifying root problems before investing in tech. With practical analogies and tactical steps, this episode bridges the gap between strategy and psychology in software rollout. Key Takeaways: Clarity Comes Before Software Before adopting software, companies need to clearly define their core operational problems. Jumping into tech without this clarity often leads to frustration and failure. The Champion Model Works Successful tech rollouts often rely on "champions" — team members who believe in the software and lead by example. Identifying the right personality types for this role (not just the loudest volunteer) is crucial. Start with the Team, Not the Tool The most effective companies get their teams involved in diagnosing problems and shaping processes before software ever enters the picture. Top-down mandates often backfire. Incentives Should Match the Culture Incentivizing new habits (like filling out daily logs) can work, but it must be tied to accountability. Small, visible rewards can spark pride and momentum, especially when tied to public progress tracking. Staged Rollout vs. All-In: Choose Wisely Rolling out software can happen gradually or all at once, but both approaches require preparation, peer support, and leadership alignment. Owner's Role: Understand and Translate Leaders don't need to be tech experts, but they do need to understand the software well enough to explain its value to their team — and to calm fears about being replaced. Memorable Quotes: “Software is only as good as how much you use it.” “Jumping into tech without clarity just means you're scaling chaos.” “You're not rushing adoption—you're building belief.” Actionable Advice: Define the Real Problems First: Use tools like whiteboards or flowcharts to uncover root causes before selecting a solution. Nominate the Right Champion: Identify someone who is both tech-comfortable and respected by the team—not just the loudest person in the room. Use Live Incentives: Create transparent incentive systems that track progress publicly and build pride over time. Start Small or Go All-In — But Plan Either Way: Whether you're doing a phased rollout or flipping the switch company-wide, preparation is key to success. The US is risking ceding global market share of clean energy to China, permanently.New tariffs, put in place one day then removed the next. Rising costs for everything along the supply chain. The US clean energy sector is navigating one of its most unpredictable phases yet. From solar to storage, how are developers and policymakers reacting to renewed trade tensions and their impact on the energy transition? “This isn't just about clean energy deployment. It's about whether the US will have a seat at the table in the future global energy economy,” says Leslie Abrahams, Deputy Director of the Energy Security and Climate Change Program at CSIS – the Center for Strategic & International Studies. She joins host Sylvia Leyva Martinez, a principal analyst covering global energy markets at Wood Mackenzie, to find out what the outlook is for US energy innovation. Escalating tariff policy is shaking investor confidence, altering supply chains, and putting the power firmly with China.Plus, in the second half of the show, Sylvia gets the developer perspective, from Joao Barreto, who is CEO of EDP Renewables' distributed generation business in North America. He explains how one of the world's largest clean energy developers is mitigating risk, adjusting their strategy, and building trust with manufacturers and offtakers amid unprecedented uncertainty.Sylvia, Leslie and Joao discuss:Why US$8 billion in clean energy projects were cancelled in Q1 2025, and what that signals to the marketHow US tariffs on Chinese batteries are backfiring on domestic manufacturingThe challenge of accelerating R&D while shutting out foreign investmentHow storage and solar developers are hedging their betsWhether the US risks ceding global market share to China permanentlyPower Play was developed by ExxonMobil to shine a light on the accomplishments of remarkable women and the men who uphold the importance of empowering others in the LNG and decarbonization industries. #679: From Tariffs to Team Culture: The Real Estate Power Moves Nobody's Talking About with Tina Caul

Coach Code Podcast

Episode Overview: In this dynamic episode of One Big Fire, John Kitchens brings together two of the most influential voices in real estate—Tina Caul and Al Stasek—for a powerful conversation that cuts through the noise and delivers actionable insights for agents, team leaders, and brokerage owners. The trio explores the impact of recent tariff pauses on new construction, Zillow's surprising path to profitability (and what it really means for agents on the ground), and why culture is the often-overlooked X-factor that separates struggling teams from thriving empires. They also celebrate the return of the iconic Honey Badger of the Month Award, diving into its origin, legacy, and why resilience, grit, and relentless action still define success in today's shifting market. If you want to future-proof your business, lead a high-performing team, and dominate in this evolving landscape, this episode is essential listening. Key Takeaways: 1. The Tariff Pause: Why It's More Than Just a Builder Boost The 90-day pause on tariffs is providing more than temporary relief to builders—it's fueling broader market confidence. Al Stasek breaks down the ripple effect from builder operations to the job market, consumer sentiment, and the overall health of the housing economy. For agents, understanding these macroeconomic moves helps sharpen their conversations with buyers and sellers. Builders need agents more than ever to help maintain velocity in their projects, creating new partnership opportunities for savvy teams. 2. Zillow's Profitability & What It Means for the Industry Zillow has turned a profit for the first time in years, but the reason may surprise many. Tina Caul outlines how Zillow's aggressive push into mortgage services has become a key revenue driver, while also highlighting their strategic shift to a remote-first model (Cloud HQ), driving operational efficiencies. The real takeaway? Teams leveraging Zillow Flex understand that the cost of leads isn't an expense—it's an investment in lifetime client value. Leaders must understand the math, manage the accountability, and double down on the opportunities Zillow provides while using those profits to diversify into other lead sources like Realtor.com. 3. Culture as the Non-Negotiable Profit Multiplier While many leaders obsess over splits, leads, and transactions, Tina and John emphasize that culture is the true profit lever in any team or brokerage. They share how clearly defined, lived, and enforced core values create alignment, drive retention, and boost per-agent productivity. The discussion highlights the danger of tolerating toxic producers and why organizations with strong cultural foundations outperform their peers—especially in volatile markets. Al reinforces that accountability must be built into the system and that Zillow's backend reporting helps take some of that burden off team leaders while raising standards. 4. The Honey Badger Award Returns: A Legacy of Resilience and Grit The episode celebrates the return of the Honey Badger of the Month Award, honoring those in the Honey Badger Nation who embody the spirit of resilience, grit, and relentless pursuit of excellence. The award isn't given lightly—it recognizes those who push through challenges, innovate under pressure, and lead from the front. Tina, a past winner herself, reminds listeners that the award is about more than production—it's about how you show up when things get hard. This week on Overdrive Radio we track back to the Mid-America Trucking Show and the big news for the trucking community from podcast sponsor Howes. The Howes Hall of Fame added its 12th member when it honored Mother Trucker Yoga proprietor and fitness and wellness coach Hope Zvara at the show. You heard part of Zvara's story when she was featured here on Overdrive Radio in conversation with Long Haul Paul Marhoefer a couple years back: https://www.overdriveonline.com/overdrive-radio/podcast/15448049/the-qualityoflife-benefits-of-movement-introducing-hope-zvara There, queried about the scourge of anxiety, depression and other mental health ailments throughout America, she asked a simple question -- "What's if it's not a mental health crisis? What if it's a movement crisis?" In that podcast, and here, she detailed her step-by-step program for fitness through basic yoga techniques drivers can do in-cab, around the truck, at points throughout a day for an approachable journey toward better physical health. Mental health, too. Zvara well knows the connections between the two and isn't shy of stressing them routinely with those she works with. She's combated mental stressors of various natures in her own life, using yoga practice toward that end. And she's now worked with an untold number of individual truck drivers to help them achieve their own goals. We got a little tutorial in her brand of “no mat necessary" yoga at the start of the Trucking Solutions Group's talk in the East Hall out at MATS on the final day. She led attendees through a series of stretches aimed simply at relieving the neck and upper-body tension so many of us face after a long day at the wheel or, in my case, typing away at the desk. Today on the podcast, hear the audio of Zvara's instruction on that mini-routine at the tail end, and otherwise buckle up for her story of helping truckers help themselves in health and wellness. And though Zvara's program is designed for simplicity, she's also well aware it's not exactly a simple matter for any of us. Hear how yoga and general phyiscal well-being got her through her own crisis, and into the work for which she's now honored as the latest member the Howes Hall of Fame. From Sparks to Light - Inspiring Stories for Challenging Times

“We create safety by numbers. The more of us there are, the safer we make everyone.” - Laura DotyI met Laura Doty in 2017 after catastrophic fires leveled much of the county where we both live. We'd shown up to assist the survivors of the fire, people who were now living at the local fairgrounds, uncertain if their house would still be standing when the flames were finally extinguished. For far too many, the answer was no. Over the years we've become friends who share a  passion for engagement, for showing up to do what we can, when we could, to make a difference. Laura, or Dr. Doty as she is known by many, has spent the better part of her life as a therapist and forensic psychologist.Laura is also one of a group of local women who call themselves the Benton  Street Improvement Association. The collection of yard signs created by the The Benton Street group is what Laura calls, “small potato activisim,” to create a community that is safe and welcoming for everyone. This is a conversation between friends, about the importance of engaging in local activism in a time of great peril. About what it means to show up and bring our authentic selves to the conversation. About speaking the truth because mall potato activism is about planting seeds and watching them grow.As you listen to this episode, consider:We create safety in numbers. Veterinary Medicine was a 2nd career for Jill Clark, DVM, who had a successful 17-year career as an Assistant Director in film and television production that followed her early start in that profession as a child actor. Looking for a change, she was accepted into veterinary school and graduated from Oklahoma State University with her DVM ('96). Clark practiced medicine in a 6-doctor practice as an associate and then Medical Director of a satellite practice for 10 years before joining a group of 8 hospitals that grew to 80, National PetCare Centers, eventually taking on the Vice President of Operations role. Next up, she served 12 years with VCA in hospital operations, managing 22 General and Specialty Practices, and then as a vice president at the VCA home office in Los Angeles, overseeing VCA's doctor recruiting team, campus relationships, and intern/resident placement. In 2010, she was responsible for creating VCA's award-winning corporate university, WOOF-U, which trained and developed over 24,000 veterinary learners and is still VCA's primary training vehicle today. Clark founded IGNITE Veterinary Solutions in 2016 with the singular goal of elevating the role-specific knowledge and capabilities of veterinary teams to enhance their well-being and the well-being of the patients and clients they serve. Her passion for the underserved learners in our profession is obvious in IGNITE's focus on CSRs and their advancement. Clark and her co-author, Kristi Fisher, CVT, created the Veterinary Receptionist Certificate of Excellence (VRCE), which has made a material difference in the lives of more than 5,000 CSRs and growing. Her passion for elevating CSRs to a new level led her to create the non-profit North American Association of Veterinary Receptionists (NAAVR) in 2024 with Debbie Boone, CVPM, and Rhonda Bell, CVPM, PCM, CDMP. This association advocates for CSRs, normalizes and creates continuing CSR education tracks at state and national conferences, and provides the tools necessary for CSRs to thrive in their role. Her nearly 30-year career in veterinary medicine has been dedicated to constantly improving veterinary outcomes and operations. It has created many opportunities for the professional growth of the incredible people who make up our profession. Clark's other passions are showing American Quarter Horses and spending time with the love of her life and fellow veterinarian Bob Murtaugh, DVM, MS, and their 7 dogs, 9 horses, 4 cats, 4 goats, 4 mini-Belted Galloway cows, and 4 chickens on their ranch outside of Austin, Texas.

From Sparks to Light - Inspiring Stories for Challenging Times

“I get a call, … I'm waiting outside on the street corner. … A pickup truck shows up, with a fridge on it. Two guys get out and drop this fridge on the street. And that's literally the way it started. These two anonymous guys, who drop this fridge on the street. … And there's this guy named Ruben. And he's the gatekeeper of the block —making sure everyone's on good behavior and nobody messes up the block and he says to me, ‘What is this?' And I say ‘Its a community fridge'. ‘A fridge for the community?' Yeah, I say. And he says, ‘I got you Dan, you and me, we're going to do this'…It was during COVID, and Dan Zauderer was a 6th grade Humanities teacher at the American Dream School in the South Bronx, a charter school in New York. The American Dream School specifically served the undocumented Latin American community. And because Dan taught in Costa Rica for a while, his Spanish skills were good, and it allowed him to get to know his students really well.Because he took the time to lean into the school community, he discovered that many of many of his students' families did not have access to basic resources. He sent out a survey via text message to eighty eight families and what he learned changed the course of his life. One in four families were cutting down on meals or skipping meals a few times a week. “The first project,' he tells me, “Was raising money online. By tapping into the contacts he'd made throughout his life, he was able to raise in the tens of thousands of dollars. They raised money for hotspots, for books for summer reading and food supplies… "It was a great experience, to know that you could rally community that way.”  They began to send staples to his student's families —cleaning supplies, beans and rice. But some of the families struggled more than others.  They enrolled six families in a food delivery program, where they received weekly boxes of produce. Over time, the money ran out, but the food insecurity did not. It was in that experience that the seeds of Grassroots Grocery were sown.  Dan Zauderer is a community builder, social entrepreneur, and the driving force behind Grassroots Grocery. His journey began as a middle school teacher at the Bronx's American Dream School, where he discovered that one in four of his students were facing food insecurity. That moment changed everything. Leaving his teaching job, he co-founded the Mott Haven Fridge Network, a grassroots initiative that grew into Grassroots Grocery, a volunteer-powered movement bringing fresh, healthy food directly to communities that need it most.Learn more about Grassroots Grocery here.Do you know someone who has a story to tell? Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau President Tim Brady said they are looking for about 100 more volunteers to serve as course marshals. Course marshals serve a key role in keeping both race participants and spectators safe. They monitor crowds along race routes to reduce risks to cyclists, provide rapid communication relating to any hazards that may arise, serve as a crossing guard along roadways operating as race courses, and act as an ambassador to spectators regarding event details. Volunteers will receive a whistle and a branded volunteer shirt. All shifts are provided with a meal and water. From Sparks to Light - Inspiring Stories for Challenging Times

“If we're not in community with other people, it's much easier to throw rocks at each other.” - John Crowley, Aqus Community Foundation.Perhaps you've had the opportunity to travel to England or Ireland and experienced it first hand. You step inside a darkly lit room, hard wood paneling defines the space. You step up to the bar, littered with glasses, beer taps and warm bodies waiting to be served. The walls are filled with dozens of yellowing photographs, framed football kits and requisite Guinness signs. Around you, a couple dozen unfamiliar friendly faces, but. strangers, the saying goes, are just friends you haven't met yet. The match is on, conversation reverberates in the air, and before you know it, people start singing. “I worked in my father's pub when I was a kid, “ says John Crowley, a native of Dublin, Ireland. “I really fell in love with it —with the community aspect of it, and I missed it when I got here.” When he emigrated to the United States, it was one of the things he longed for, but no matter where he looked, he couldn't seem to find. Sure, there were great bars and restaurants —he was in the San Francisco Bay Area after all, but he couldn't find the sense of community reminiscent of his formative years. Twenty five years ago, Crowley read Bowling Alone, and it changed his life. The book was about the power of social connection, asking the question, Where is our social capital? Where are the networks in community that bind it together and make is stronger? Unable to find it in his new home, he went about trying to create it. He invited people to join him in conversation at a local restaurant. The topic? What was the last postcard you received? That night, he waited to see what would happen. A couple of new acquaintances arrived. As they sat and chatted, a few others joined. And then a few more.  A social quorum emerged., and as they sat and chatted, the threads of community began to emerge. The rest, as they say, is history. From the seeds of those early conversations, to a lifetime of dedication to building social connection, John Crowley has dedicated his life to expanding social capital. Along with British American business partner Lesley McCullaugh, he is the the owner of Aqus Cafe and founder of Aqus Community Foundation, a nonprofit focused on building a community connection that provides a sense of belonging and encourages people to invest in where they live. You can learn more about John Crowley and Aqus Community Foundation here.Do you know someone who has a story to tell? It is a phone call no parent wants to receive. A child is missing —or even worse, presumed dead. That was the call that Sally McQuillen and her husband, Joe, received on a cold January day, nine years ago. Their 21 year old son, Christopher, and three friends, drowned in a boating accident when the canoe they were in capsized on an icy lake in Wisconsin. Sally shares her journey through that life changing experience in Reaching for Beautiful, a memoir that captures her deep love for her son, the agonizing grief of his loss and the lessons learned through a profound experience she has since learned to embrace as a gift. Christopher was, in Sally's words, a “wild child.”  Prior to getting married and beginning a family, both Sally and her husband struggled with addiction, but by the time Christopher was born, both had embraced years of sobriety and believed they could protect their children from the mistakes they'd made. And yet, despite all the preparation that goes into it, parenting is often a journey without a road map. The oldest of three, Christopher struggled with ADHD and later, addiction, but years of treatment gave him a path to sobriety, so by the time he entered college, he was on his way to a brighter future. But it was not meant to be.  “He had a couple of near death accidents, even when sober, says Sally, “So that just kind of showed me that what I've come to believe is true, I don't think that he was meant to be here for longer than his 21 years.”Sally McQuillen, LCSW, CADC, is a psychotherapist specializing in addiction, grief, and trauma recovery. Based in the Chicago area, she provides ongoing support for addiction recovery, as well as support for those recovering from the impact of a loved one's addiction.
