Send us a textIn this episode of the Rugby Coach Weekly Podcast, Dan Cottrell sits down with Charlie Harrison, former professional player for Bath, Bedford, Rotherham and player/coach at Doncaster, ex-Head of Rugby at Marlborough College, and now coach of the U14s at Marlborough. They discuss the transition from coaching First XV to working with younger players, the importance of game-based learning, and how to develop players beyond just their physical attributes. Charlie shares insights into structuring training sessions, managing player progression, and fostering a long-term love for the game. Key Takeaways:Transitioning from First XV to U14s: Coaching younger players requires a shift from strategy-heavy sessions to focusing on skill development and game understanding.Game-Based Learning: Small-sided games and scenario-driven training help players develop decision-making skills in realistic situations.Balancing Structure and Creativity: Encouraging players to recognise space and opportunities rather than following rigid patterns leads to more effective, instinctive play.Managing Player Progression: Developing a long-term mindset ensures players grow beyond their physical attributes, helping both early and late bloomers succeed. The Role of Set-Piece Training: While vital at higher levels, younger age groups benefit more from prioritising open play, with set-piece elements introduced gradually.Keeping Rugby Sustainable in Schools: Making rugby fun, safe, and inclusive—alongside strong communication with parents—helps maintain engagement and participation. You've completed the CrossFit Open 2025, but do you truly understand what each workout was testing? Coaches David Syvertsen @davesy85 and Sam Rhee @bergencosmetic dive deep into the methodology behind this year's programming, revealing insights that could transform your approach to training. The first workout wasn't just about lunges and dumbbell movements—it was a deliberate test of your mental endurance and ability to maintain continuous movement for 15 minutes straight. As @davesy85 says, "They purposely didn't make it heavy... As tired as you are, you can always keep moving on a burpee." This accessibility by design serves CrossFit's goal of casting a wider net, especially for first-time Open participants. The classic thruster and pull-up combination in 25.2 exposed weaknesses in either barbell strength, gymnastics skill, or the mobility required to link these movements efficiently. The coaches note that the thruster "might be the most complete movement in terms of fitness," requiring full-body coordination and excellent front rack mobility.Perhaps most revealing was the discussion about rest periods versus rep schemes. "I want to challenge all athletes to start thinking about how many breaths am I taking between sets, rather than what should my sets be." This mindset shift could be the key to shaving minutes off your workout times, especially in tests like 25.3 where transitions between stations often consume precious seconds. The conversation takes a particularly passionate turn when addressing the scaling options. Many of the athletes in the 55+ age group found the scaled movements "thoroughly unsatisfying," arguing that many Masters competitors can and regularly do perform more advanced gymnastics movements than what's programmed. The coaches propose thoughtful solutions that would maintain the integrity of the competition while being more inclusive.Whether you're analyzing your own Open performance or planning next year's approach, this episode offers valuable insights that bridge the gap between programming theory and practical application. Send us a textWelcome to Th Agegroup Multisport PodcastOn this Episode we speak to Gemma Berry, She reached out and said she would like to share her story. Gemma says"'I Grew up in Perth (Australia) in a sporty family - especially a very successful Mum. Hockey, swimming, gymnastics, trampolining, surf lifesaving....After high school got into powerlifting, then about 2003 running - could only run 1km!Fast forward a few years, moved to Melbourne, Australia and new friends were into tris - I resisted as I hated the cycling. But did a few events in a team. Did my first solo tri in 2008, loved it, then had kids in 2011, 2013. Finally got back into the sport in 2015, slowly progressed my way thru the age group.Younger son was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2018, so tris took a back seat - but I ran and ran and ran (helped me deal with it emotionally). Ran my first marathon in 2019 as a fundraiser for pediatric brain cancer, then got back into tris. Done a few 70.3s - went to Taupo WC in Dec 2024, now hoping to qualify for Woolongong AG Champs in Oct this year. Welcome to this week's episode featuring Mike Goddard, entrepreneur, a current World and European triathlon champion in the 75-79 age group sprint distance and an avid fell runner. I invited Mike after he engaged with one of my recent posts about reducing training volume while maintaining performance. He didn't just maintain his fitness. He achieved unprecedented fitness, for him at least, winning his age group both the Euros and the World Championships in the sprint distance. If you're interested and have concerns about how aging may affect your training and racing, this episode will provide encouraging insights and highlight positive aspects to look forward to. In this episode, we'll cover: Holding the fastest known time up and down Mount Kenya, navigating the challenges of his son's paralysis following a climbing accident and how this experience propelled him into the triathlon world. Joys and impacts of aging. Importance of having a coach. The social aspects of training, especially for athletes in individual sports and those involved in clubs. Mike also shares how strength and mobility work have significantly benefited his performances. Why older runners should focus on age graded performances when run performances tend to drop off anyway. Balance between race craft and fitness, including long term planning for older athletes. And finally, he shares a story about taking Alistair and Johnny Brownlee to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in 2013. Send us a textWelcome along to another episode of AMP, on this episode we speak to Grant Paling, a triathlete of 11 years but relatively new to agegroup. Grant says"When I was a kid I had big dreams, like most kids do.Astronaut, actor, race car driver - the kind of dreams only an uninhibited child can conjure up, free to think of what might be.One of those dreams was to represent my country. Football, maybe athletics? I was inspired through watching my sporting heroes on tv. And thanks to my dad's love of sport, we watched a lot of it!Those days are now long gone, and I thought those dreams were left behind. When I started triathlon in 2013 I never dreamed of reaching any kind of heights, I just knew I loved it from day one.I played football for 26 years (much of which I spent chasing my first touch) and whilst I achieved some success, triathlon was different. Still part of a team, the amazing Tunbridge Wells Triathlon Club, my other “family”, but now ultimately competing on my own - no team around to do it for me if I didn't perform. But I persevered, inspired by those around me doing incredible things and in 2024, at 41 years old, I travelled to Coimbra in Portugal donning the Great Britain tri suit for the very first time and achieving one of those lifelong dreams by racing in the Middle Distance team for British Triathlon in the European Age Group Championships.I followed that up by competing again for GB in the Standard distance at the European Champs in Vichy in September and despite a bike crash, finished 17th overall.I'm known for my epic race reports within Tunbridge Wells Triathlon Club - I'd love to come on and share some of those experiences over the years and also to talk about how I reached new levels using an AI coaching app to prepare for stepping up to Age Group level, especially being time limited with 2 relatively young kids aged 5 and 7. Game changer!"we had a great chat about, how he juggles being a parent and triathlon and how he implements AI coaching in his training.please enjoy.you can find Grant on Instagram @GRANTPALINGYou Can Follow us onYouTube - AMP GBInstagram @amp_1967Facebook : AMPGBfind all our episodes on our websiteWebsite is : https://agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.com/email: agegroupmultisportpodcast@gmail.comIf you are an agegroup athlete and would like to come on the pod, get in touch.

Send us a textOn our latest episode features Paul HaslamPaul says "I was born raised in Chesterfield. My sporting background started as a child where I was very keen on football and later in my teens, cricket, tennis & hockey, amongst other sports. I struggled to get in the school football team until I was about 14 when I finally started to grow & bulk up a bit & found myself able to muscle my way about a bit more. After school, I continued with sport at college, mainly squash and then found myself encouraged into joining the Dept water polo team as they were looking for new additions. Now that was an eye opener. My first game I only played the 2 nd half and I was absolutely knackered by the end, so much so, I slipped and slid from top to bottom on the stairs to the changing rooms. I thought squash was tough till I got involved in water polo – the toughest sport I've ever done. After college I ended up working in the coal mining industry. My sporting life was mainly darts around that time. I later joined a Sunday League type football team and also found myself involved in the works cricket team.Between the age of 28 and 58 any remotely sporting connections I had were limited to recreational activities with the kids such as mountain bike rides on trails, not roads.Over the 30 years my weight had gradually risen from below 11 stone and 32” waist to almost 15 stone and a near 40” waist. Then out of the blue in August 2018, Karen announced to me that she was going to do something called “Couch to 5k”. What the hell is that, I thought. Well I soon found out as I was seconded to a support role, which basically meant I was doing it too. My initial response was to say to Karen that I'd probably run about 50 yards and collapse. By May 2019, Id lost about 4.5 stone in weight.9th June 2019 finally arrived & that was the start of my triathlon pursuit. Southport Triathlon was only my 2nd Standard Triathlon and my first-ever qualifier. And so, the GB Age Group experience was about to begin in 2022 eventually named as in a place called Olsztyn in Poland. Having submitted a sprintresult for European and World Triathlon events, I also qualified for Montreal World Sprint Tri a as last gap spot for Munich Europeans Sprint Tri, which I had desperately wanted to do, for the trip to Munich, as city we came to fall in love with. For Olsztyn in May 2022 I managed to finish a totally unexpected 2nd place in the 60-64 Age Group.Since that very first event, I've gone on to do a total of 16 GB starts including mixed team relays, 4 events in 2022, 3 events in 2023 including another silver in the Europeans Standard Tri (converted to standard duathlon) and 9 events in 2024 including a silver in theEuropean Middle Distance Duahtlon in Alsdorf and 2 bronzes in the Europeans in Vichy. As mentioned in the show we have been nominated Finalist in the Sports Podcast Awards 2025 please vote using the link below.https://www.sportspodcastgroup.com/shortlist-category/

Are kids missing out by specializing in just one sport at a young age?Is specializing in one sport too soon hindering our kids' development? Discover how Kevin Shire and Top Sports are transforming youth athletics with a multi-sport approach that encourages playing hockey, soccer, and lacrosse within a single organization. Top Sports is a multi-sport model that lets young athletes explore hockey, soccer, and lacrosse within the same organization. Want to race better? Master the principles in this podcast. Today, we look at what's really important for long course triathlon. The ability to hold form and effort over a long period of time. You can make it rocket science if you want, but the principles are pretty easy. Don't break down. But how do you get to that point? We talk about how to get there and nail the omnipresent philosophy of: It's not how fast you go, but how little you slow down. We look at how fatigue masks fitness, how it's important to test with fatigue, holding form when you need it most and the the real concept behind being “strong” in triathlon. Topics: 800th podcast all star cast?? Have you noticed that 12 step skincare routines are being marketed to younger and younger age groups? Nine year olds are flocking to Sephora to get their fix. How necessary/unnecessary is this? If there some merit to adopting a skincare routine so young? This is just one of the many questions we're answering today with holistic esthetician, Jamie Burkhalter. We're going beyond the consumerism of skincare and reframing it from a routine to a ritual. So whether you've got a teenager at home dealing with acne for the first time or you're wondering how to maintain elasticity as you age, this episode is for you. We're also having an important conversation about the expectations that are put on us by social media. Personally, I've given up filters completely in hopes that I don't pass down insecurities to my children. The truth is, none of us are immune to aging and we should stop touting "anti-aging" products as the holy grail. And finally, we'll be covering Evan Healy, the skincare brand committed to regenerative sourcing and environmental sustainability. Jamie provides a deep dive into the ethos behind their nutrient-rich, plant-based products and the philosophy that prioritizes personal health and the health of our planet. In this episode, we're chatting about: What does it mean to take a holistic approach to skincare? Labor day weekend is for the Age Group competitors. Is the ubiased 3rd party investigator really unbiased?
Today, I'm syncing up with Ezra Swell, Age Group triathlete that is CRUSHING it in the 25-29 age group, which he just entered this year. He recently won Challenge New Jersey, where he earned a spot to Challenge Roth. In June he came in first in his age group at IRONMAN 70. 3 Happy Valley, where I was race announcing and watched him come through the finish line, which was pretty cool. He has also won 1st AG IRONMAN 70.3 Eagleman. In his spare time Ezra works in finance and played college basketball at University of Chicago. During our conversation, we chat about how Ezra got his start in triathlon and what he loves about the sport, how he has evolved as an athlete from his first IRONMAN to winning in his AG at the Ironman 70.3 distance , when he was self coaching and why he decided to hire a coach ( podcast guest) Matt Hansen, when and why he joined Every Man Jack, similarities and diff between basketball and triathlon, what Ezra does when he isn't racing and training, his super cool bike and when/who he finds time for dating!

Rarely do we look at training for endurance or being an endurance athlete here. Today is different. This isn't a suggestion nor a recommendation. But it is a glass ceiling lift. Whatever you think is possible, is possible. There are few 78-year-olds training for 4-5 hours on a bike or spending hours a week in the pool and on their zero gravity treadmill... preparing for one of the most daunting events in triathlon. But today's guest is. My returning guest is a 78-year-old endurance athlete and she's here to share her next goal. If you walk away with one thing, I hope it is that it's never too late, you're not too old. And if you find yourself thinking, she shouldn't, you reconsider and do a self check about your own fear level instead. My Guest: Dexter Yeats, age 78, but identified as 79 for Racing, as it is My Last Year in the Female 74-79 Age Group! In the late 1970s, she began participating in triathlons. In her first race, she finished as the third female overall but was also dead last. There were few female racers back then, and no awards for women, so they received single red roses from a local grocery store. Her first Ironman was in Penticton, Canada, in 1993, where she won her age group (45-49) and qualified for KONA, finishing 10th in her age group. Life's demands limited her swimming and cycling, drawing her to Ultra Running. She ran a dozen 50-mile trail runs and attempted a few 100-mile runs, but her career as a Teamster truck driver restricted her training time, leading to some years without racing. After retiring in 2010, she moved near Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and resumed racing at 66. She has since completed 15 more full Ironman races, totaling 16, with 10 age group wins and 5 Kona finishes. Despite a few DNFs, she remains undeterred. She has also competed in Ironman 70.3 races, qualifying for the World Championships in Australia, South Africa, and France. In 2018, she won as The World Champion in her age group (70-74) in South Africa. ASEA sponsors her, providing 'Fountain of Youth' products that help her stay healthy, recover and keep going. Questions we answer in this episode: ● How long have you been racing? 00:08:30 ● Any plans to hang it up? 00:09:30 ● What kind of goals do you have? 00:015:40 ● Are you training by the numbers and testing or what does that look like ?00:08:20 ● Do you get resistance from people who think this is too much or wonder if you should be doing this? 19:00 Thoughts about endurance training or being an endurance athlete in latter decades? We sit down and meet 2 amazing athletes from 1 family who will be competing on the same weekend in 2 different states. How will they deal with being several states apart chasing their individual dreams. Zoe will be at the Pit Teen Throwdown and Ashley will be at the Legends Championship.
