What if I told you that for a short time, Tough Mudder had a huge focus on elite racing and gave away more money than any other race company? In 2017, TMHQ produced a timed morning wave, 8-hour overnight events, and Tough Mudder X, which they called "The Toughest Mile on the planet". All these events had cash prizes and broadcast deals. Here are snippets from press releases at that time. ..."Tough Mudder, the active lifestyle and media brand, has partnered with Facebook to deliver original, live event sports and fitness programming on Watch, Facebook's new platform for shows. Facebook will be the exclusive video platform for the new $50,000 Tougher Mudder Championship race series and Weekly Tough Mudder Bootcamp fitness studio classes" ..."The deal features the launch of the new sports event, Tough Mudder X, named “The Ultimate Race to Determine the Fittest and the Fastest Athletes in the World.” With the new agreement, all Tough Mudder television programming – Tough Mudder X, America's Toughest Mudder, and World's Toughest Mudder – will now debut on CBS. Encore presentations of the shows will air on CBS Sports Network in prime time" Like many other chapters in our book, the events were here, they were awesome, and then they were gone. Live from the Tough Mudder weekend in Sonoma, this week's episode is full of interviews from athletes at the Tougher Mudder wave, the Toughest Mudder West race, and race director Eli Hutchison. I spoke with Lauren Taksa and Nick O'Sullivan on Saturday all about their respective wins at the Tougher Mudder race, and they give us some insight into the course and the competition. Then I spoke with Trevor Cichosz, Rea Kolbl, Allison Tai, and Kris Mendoza after the Toughest Mudder race (shortly after I had finished my own) all about the competition, how the daytime Toughest Mudder compared to the races at night, what they thought of the course, and more. Lastly, I spoke with Eli Hutchison from TMHQ all about Toughest and about the many changes Tough Mudder is making to their 2019 season.

Ulrikke Evensen joins us to talk about her first-place finish at Europe's Toughest Mudder. Ulrikke ran 45 miles at Europe's Toughest Mudder, tying the women's record held by Lindsay Webster and Allison Tai. Ulrikke talks about how the race went for her, how the weather affected her, and how a man named Sam from the U.K. stepped up at the last minute to be her pit crew. Well done Sam. You're smashing it. Before we talk with Ulrikke we talk about the men's and women's podiums. We will discuss the full list of results and mileage totals when they are released by TMHQ. --- Do you have a moment from your experience at Tough Mudder that you would like to share with the audience of World's Toughest Podcast? Francis Lackner and Sue Harvey-Brown join us in this episode. You may have seen Francis on a Tough Mudder course in his jolly red suit carrying his running partner, Santa Claus. Santa has "run" 39 Tough Mudder events. Francis plans to cross the 100 event mark himself in 2018. In June of 2017, Francis lost his mom to cancer. A few months later Francis was running Toughest Mudder Chicago. His mom was supposed to there with him. On his second lap, the emotions became too much and he felt ready to quit. Instead of quitting, Francis and Ryan Cray decided to spend some extra time at the top of Everest 2.0, just helping people over the obstacle. The penalty for failing the obstacle was an additional 3/4 mile run. That extra time turned into an hour, and then into two hours, and then into four hours. Francis and Ryan left Everest to finish their second lap after 5 and a half hours on top of Everest. After Toughest Mudder ended at 8:30 Francis spent the morning honoring his mother. He passed out red plastic roses to TMHQ staff, volunteer, and runners. The roses represented "One more day above the roses" the title of a song that became important to Ryan and his mother as she battled with cancer. Ryan tells the story of the roses and everything that happened that weekend. Sue Harvey-Brown is the liaison between Merrell and Tough Mudder. When Merrell is working on a new initiative with Tough Mudder, odds are Sue is not far from the work being done. Merrell and World's Toughest Podcast are partnering to bring you the Merrell Mudder Moment. This is a moment that happened to you or someone you know on a Tough Mudder course. Maybe the moment happened off the course and Tough Mudder was how you conquered it, or found peace with it. Or maybe Tough Mudder was how you honored someone like Francis and his mother. We're going to highlight a new Merrell Mudder Moment every other month in 2018. Honorees will receive a pair of Merrell trail running shoes like the All Out Crush 2.0 and the opportunity to share their story on World's Toughest Podcast. To submit your Merrell Mudder Moment, email Worldstoughestpodcast@gmail.com with Merrell Mudder Moment or MMM in the subject line. In the body of the email tell your story. What happened? Heather Heaton did her first World’s Toughest Mudder in 2014. She went in knowing nothing. After taking her lumps from the course and the sandstorm she joined the World’s Toughest community online and came back ready for anything her next time. Heather is a member of Team Three Rex. They are best known for their WTM Pit Crew headband fundraiser. In 2017 they sold 500 headbands with all the proceeds going to charity. Before we talk with Heather we talk about the race that wasn’t. TMHQ hosts a large brunch the day after World’s Toughest Mudder. It’s a celebration of the event, the winners, and the community. After brunch Will sat down with Sue Harvey Brown, Kris Mendoza, and Kris’ parents, Katie and Danny Mendoza. As part of her job for Merrell Sue is the liaison to Tough Mudder and the WTM Community. But she’s also a part of the community. She ran two Toughest Mudders in 2017 as well as World’s Toughest Mudder. She talks about her experience on the course as well as what Merrell has coming up in 2018. Kris Mendoza is one of only seven people on the planet who have run 100 miles at WTM. He won 3rd place at WTM 2016 and was part of Team USA 8 that ran 120 miles at WTM 2017. He is the only OCR athlete we know of with his own theme song. Katie and Danny Mendoza are Kristopher’s parents. They worked pit crew for Kris and his team. They talk about how proud they are of their son, but also how it feels as a parent to know your son is out on the course freezing cold and suffering. They gave Will one of their limited edition DOZA hats. He wears it everywhere now. --- If you'd like to join the World’s Toughest Podcast Newsletter, text the word TOUGH to 228-28, or email WorldsToughestPodcast@gmail.com with SUBSCRIBE in the subject line and your 1)Name, 2)Email Address and 3)Cell Phone in the body of the email. 6th Place Finisher (95 miles) from World's Toughest Mudder 2016 Chris Maltbie talks with Evan Perperis about his job at Tough Mudder Headquarters and what it is like to balance the life of an elite Obstacle Course Racer while also working in the industry. Evan also asks Chris about the location of WTM 2017, the expansion of Toughest Mudder next year and Chris hints at the recent announcement of the Tougher Mudder Championship (recorded before that announcement was made public). Finally, Evan requests three pieces of WTM merch....which everyone should harass TMHQ about ;) This episode brought to you by Merrell. Toughest Mudder Whistler Preview with PJ Catalano Toughest Canada weather report is at 14:10. If you want to get straight to PJ, skip to 20:35. PJ and Will talk about Toughest Whistler at 47:55 Will opens the episode with news from the world of Tough Mudder including the release of the Holy Grail Leaderboard. All of your milage from the Tough Mudder competitive series is logged and you are ranked based on miles completed. Right now Sara Knight leads all people with 120 miles. TMHQ announced a new obstacle exlusively for Toughest Mudder Canada: Bears. That is a true story. They’re concerned about bears on or near the course so they’re taking some safely precautions. We talk about them as we preview Whistler. Of all the guys that run multiple laps at Tough Mudder courses, PJ Catalano is the multi-lappingingest. He’s the only guy Will knows that has run three laps in one day at a course. PJ has run WTM three times, in 2014, 15, and 16. He’s hit 50 miles or more twice but still feels like those years weren’t completely successful races for him. One of the things PJ and Will talk about is the emotional side of running World’s Toughest Mudder. You won't hear many people talk about it, but WTM will provide you with some highs and some LOWS. Then we get a view of the race from the top of the podium as we talk to Trevor Cichosz. Trevor won Toughest Philly, as well as World’s Toughest Mudder 2016. We talk to him about both races. Finally we check in with Nolan Kombol and Eli Hutchison of TMHQ. Nolan and Eli are the brains behind Toughest Mudder. They’re the ones to thank for that Mud Mile in Atlanta. Bonus episode of World’s Toughest Podcast! Last Minute Toughest Mudder Atlanta Edition! We start with a weather report for Toughest Mudder Atlanta. It’s going to be hot. 69 degrees at 12:00 midnight. The coldest it will get during the race is 60 degrees at 6:00am. No rain in the forecast but humidity will be between 20 and 25 percent for the eight hours. Jim Campbell ran Tougher Mudder this morning and talks about the course. Block Ness Monster is DEEP this time. Be careful guys. After we talk about the course we talk about the elite athletes running tonight and who to watch. Sean Corvelle was working the start line and was outstanding as always. We heard through the grapevine that TMHQ has added four additional dates to Sean’s schedule for 2017. Sean had a great line he doesn’t use all the time: “Tough Mudder does not build obstacles to hurt you. Any fool can do that. We create a course to challenge you.” We also talk to David Thanos about the course. He ran Tougher Mudder this morning. He also talks about the water depth at Block Ness Monster and the rule changes to Tougher Mudder. TMHQ has added penalty loops to Funky Monkey and Kong. If you fail either of those two obstacles you no longer have the option to retry the obstacle. You must take the penalty loop. However, even if you fail them, as long as you complete the penalty loop you will qualify for the Tougher Mudder headband. If you finish on the podium tonight at Toughest Mudder Atlanta be sure to find Will Hicks afterward for the World’s Toughest Continental Breakfast. We’ll talk about the race while you enjoy some fruit, carbs, and a chilled Starbucks Carmel Macchiato or a Throwback Mt. Dew (with Real Sugar!)
