How Do You Make Innovation Happen?

The wrong way to make innovation happen, Ty Hagler says in this week's special bonus episode, is to have a great idea and then go all-in trying to create it. That, he says, is a really expensive way to find out if your idea works. The right way to pursue innovation, he says, is to take your idea to customers so you can assess the pain points and opportunity spaces before proceeding. Hagler, who is founder and CEO of Trig, an innovation and design firm in North Carolina, also says he's learned that the problem with focus groups is that the more people you have in the room, the less valuable the conversation tends to be. In fact, he says, one-on-one is best. He also says that brainstorming remotely can actually work better than in-person. Oh, and by the way, if your Mom tells you she loves your idea and will definitely buy your product as soon as it's available, she's probably lying.

Ty for many years had a passion for art, design and engineering hence leading to the formation of Trig in 2008, having started his career as an Industrial Designer at Home Depot he decided to return to school to complete an MBA in Innovation Management and Marketing at North Carolina State University, where he got exposed to medical devices and realised that the issues faced during home development were similar to those within devices especially during the human ergonomics phase hence why he decided to serve the industry through his own company Trig. On this episode he covers the development of blockchain plus its integration into healthcare, his career development to date and the need to develop yourself as an entrepreneur, the distribution of pharmaceutical and MedTech companies in the RTP area of North Carolina, his athletic past as a world-class kayaker and how he applied the skills and lessons he learnt during his athletic career to his work and his advice for students together with various different programs available for career development across higher education institutes within the USA. He has a unique take on how early stage medical innovators can get funding. His company has developed a workshop that engages clinicians to identify problem areas in healthcare and build well-articulated need statements. He asserts that the structured processes for medical device development are not the same as the skills and techniques needed to generate a novel device idea at the beginning. Teams of clinicians and researchers are led through a 7-week hands-on curriculum where they work on their highest priority unmet needs in healthcare and learn how to prototype low-risk experiments. The second cohort of 4 teams presented their work on June 8th, 2022. Ty Hagler: Changing the Current

Growing with Purpose

On this episode of the Growing with Purpose podcast, host Paul Spiegelman talks with Ty Hagler, founder and Principal of the industrial design firm, Trig.  As a teenager volunteering at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, Ty was exposed to the sport of flatwater kayaking for the first time. That was the start of what became a decade-long career: Ty eventually grew into a world-class kayaker and was even an Olympic hopeful in 2004. But there comes a time when every athlete must retire, and when Ty hung up his paddle, he decided to return to earlier passions that he'd abandoned. An introvert with a passion for art, design, and engineering, Ty founded Trig in 2008. After years of running the business solo, he shifted his focus to building a team of aligned, inspired individuals and committed to a 100% virtual model. Changing the current isn't always easy, but it's a life skill that Ty has mastered better than most.  After a decade as a world-class athlete, Ty realized that the same principles of discipline, processes, pragmatism, and persistence that are required for sport can also be applied to teams that lead innovation results. In this episode, you'll hear how Ty's lifelong curiosity allowed him to build an award-winning, virtual design firm.
