Colorado Outdoors - the Podcast for Colorado Parks and Wildlife
In 2024, Colorado passed House Bill 24-1117 which placed the management of invertebrates and rare plants under CPW's wildlife umbrella. In the next two episodes, we are going to dive more into CPW's management of invertebrates and rare plants by talking with the experts now on CPW's team to make sure the state has a cohesive plan to manage our ecosystems. While Colorado may have been behind some other states when it comes to legislative authority over invertebrates and rare plants, CPW is running fast and looking to be a leader in that space. But it's a really big job.Previously, CPW managed 960 wildlife species. In Colorado, there are roughly 1,000 different native bee species alone, and that's just one aspect of the invertebrate and pollinator community. Of those bees, we have 25 different bumblebee species, with 20% of those currently under federal consideration for listing under the Endangered Species Act.In this episode, we are going to start by talking about our invertebrates. But that is such a broad topic, we've decided to home in on bee species as we chat with Invertebrate and Rare Plant Program Manager Hayley Schroeder and Pollinator Program Conservation Manager Adrian Carper. It's time to pollinate your mind and learn why you should care about the state's bee populations and what makes some of these so unique. Soon, you'll know they are every bit as charismatic as many of the state's famed wildlife species.
Today we're joined by Mark Agnew, a writer, journalist and motivational speaker who made history as part of the first group to ever complete the Northwest Passage by kayak. We talk all about the resilience required to undertake the 2,000 mile trip, the unexpected joy of headwinds and close encounters with polar bears. We also discuss the true meaning of adventure and how you often don't need to travel to a far-flung corner of the world to have a rewarding experience.Mark's brand new book There Will be Headwinds is out 3rd July. Alaskan Klee Kai Move to Miscellaneous Host Laura Reeves is joined by Chelsea Watson for a discussion of the Alaskan Klee Kai moving to Miscellaneous this summer. [caption id="attachment_14178" align="alignleft" width="370"] Versatile, energetic and aloof, Alaskan Klee Kai join Miscellaneous.[/caption] According to Watson, the Klee Kai was developed in Alaska in the 1970s by one woman who wanted to create a “miniature Husky.” The breed was developed using Alaskan Huskies, with additions of Siberian Husky, American Eskimo Dog and Schipperke. The Klee Kai is 12-17 inches tall, with a variety of colors and coats available. Bred as a companion dog, it should still move with the smooth, effortless carriage of its working forbears, Watson noted. The Klee Kai was accepted into AKC's FSS (Foundation Stock Service) program in 2020. An active, even busy, breed, Klee Kai are aloof and reserved with strangers, but excel in agility and other performance events, Watson said. “They are very high energy breed,” Watson said. “They are not couch potatoes. They also are a very versatile breed. You want to go hiking for three hours every day? They can do it. Bike for five hours or five miles a day, probably 5 hours too, they can do it. Kayaking and paddle boarding with them. They could do weight pull. The tricky part is you got to have patience because they're still gonna do a quid pro quo. What's in it for me? The Husky piece is strong in them, (but) I would say they are more trainable than Huskies. Patience, it just requires a lot of patience. It's like training your cat.” The following links offer additional information about the breed. Sue Stockdale speaks to adventurer, author, and deep thinker Ed Ley-Wilson. Ed shares insights from his life exploring both the outdoors and the mind. From kayaking the rugged west coast of Scotland to reflecting on resilience, solitude, and the power of slowing down, Ed reveals how adventure - whether on land, sea, or within ourselves shapes our engagement with the world. About Ed Ley-WilsonEd has over thirty years of working and engaging with business, community, educational, social and environmental issues throughout the Highlands of Scotland. He has undertaken long self-supported kayaking journeys in Norway and Patagonia and has run 1200 miles of the Great Wall of China (1988) and the 2000 mile length of the Himalayas (1990). Ed is no stranger to hardship and during his 2022 kayaking journey up the west coast of Scotland he faced some of the worst weather in that region for years. He also has two books to his name, ‘The Himalayan Shuffle' and ‘Kayaking the Sea Roads.Key Quotes"Adventure isn't just about the physical challenge; it's about how we engage with the world around us and what we learn from it.""Solitude teaches you resilience in a way nothing else can - you have to sit with your thoughts and find your own way through them.""Whether on the sea or in life, you can't always control what happens, but you can control how you respond to it.""The lessons I learned from John Ridgway weren't just about survival; they were about self-reliance, discipline, and understanding your own limits.""Slowing down and disconnecting from the noise of the modern world is one of the greatest gifts adventure can offer.""It's not a weakness to not know stuff. Colorado Outdoors - the Podcast for Colorado Parks and Wildlife
Colorado Parks and Wildlife owns and operates the largest inventory of dams in the state of Colorado. The water impounded is used for purposes such as downstream irrigation, fisheries management and aquatic operations, and a multitude of recreational activities including fishing, boating and swimming.CPW manages more than 120 dams across the state and has spent more than $126 million in the last decade for dam safety related work. All of this work helps keep downstream communities safe while providing recreational opportunities in Colorado's reservoirs and on tailwater fisheries. Without these dams creating reservoirs, the state would have significantly less water-based recreation opportunities, as there are only 11 natural lakes in Colorado greater than 50 surface acres. In this episode of the Colorado Outdoors Podcast, we chat with Dam Safety Program Manager and Chief Dam Safety Engineer Eric Eisinger as well as Capital Program Manager Margaret Taylor about what it takes to monitor and manage Colorado's inventory of dams.Come for the great information, stay for the beaver jokes.

It’s the Passover holiday period and hopefully many people, Israelis and visitors, will be going up to the north of Israel. For the first time since the war started. And after a year and a half the kayaking is back in operation on the mighty Jordan River. Chen Malka of Kfar Blum Kayak told reporter Arieh O’Sullivan that it’s a not-to-miss stop in a visit to the north. She said returning to the river in kayaks was also a symbol of the north coming back to life. (photo: Yossi Aloni) See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week we are chatting with ocean adventurer and incredible speaker Cyril Derreumaux!! Cyril just wrapped up his grand adventure of solo kayaking across the Atlantic Ocean. 71 days of isolation, endurance and self reliance! Through this experience he truly got the opportunity to connect with the ocean spiritually while embracing the routine of the day to day. This episode is all about this adventure and is one of my favorite conversations I've had for the podcast! We talk about the scariest moment of his kayak when he encountered a giant swordfish right next to his boat, what one learns about the world when they feel so completely insignificant on the ocean, and how he has felt since returning to land! If you enjoyed Cyril on the show be sure to check out the links below to see his public speaking. He truly is incredible and would be a great person to bring into your business or school! #154 - Imagine plunging down a 35-foot waterfall strapped inside a kayak, or trying to compose a stunning piano piece that captures the serenity of nature. These are just fragments of Jon Cheney's extraordinary journey as a creator, adventurer, entrepreneur, and man of faith. From his early years in a musical household where his parents prioritized owning a grand piano before even having proper furniture, to his teenage years in Paraguay learning Spanish, Jon's life has been defined by embracing new challenges. His remarkable ability to master languages – including Mandarin Chinese during his church mission – parallels his approach to music composition, where he sees patterns and structures that most miss. The heart of our conversation explores Jon's passion for whitewater kayaking and the profound life lessons it's taught him. "You're going to flip over in life," Jon explains with the wisdom of someone who's faced Class 5 rapids and business setbacks alike. "But when you've learned that you can flip over and then get back up and be okay, then the world really opens up." This philosophy has guided him through entrepreneurial ventures, creative pursuits, and personal challenges. What makes Jon's perspective particularly refreshing is his recent epiphany about pursuing multiple passions. After years of praying for divine guidance on which path to choose – music, adventure, business, or writing – he found peace in Elder Uchtdorf's simple wisdom: "It mattereth not, only be faithful." This liberating principle has energized Jon to embrace all facets of his creative spirit rather than waiting for permission to begin.Whether you're considering your own adventure into whitewater kayaking, struggling to choose between multiple passions, or simply seeking inspiration from someone who's mastered the art of getting back up after life flips you over, Jon's story will leave you both entertained and equipped with a new perspective on life's rapids. She operates a cafe in West Georgia with a motto of "serving coffee with kindness." We could all use that in our world today. Rewind back to what made her focus on loving people out of dark times, this business owner talks about growing up dirt poor with a mom who made life magical with outdoors adventures...leaving everything to hike the Appalachian Trail...making plans to kill herself but why she didn't do it...and the healing power of kayaking. Now, she's opening up a first-of-its-kind venture in the Chattahoochee Valley. (3:18) The owner of The Brick and Mortar Cafe in Columbus GA first talks about why she left her 3 jobs and sold all her stuff, a decade ago, to set out to hike the AT from Georgia to Maine - and then why she had to stop after nearly 700 miles. The roots of it were depression and proving something to herself and the power to keep moving. And in Maine, she got a job managing a coffee shop that inspired her to open up her own! (10:00) The mission of her coffee shop in "Old Town" is to love people where they are, put a smile on customers' faces. That comes from the dark place of Heather being suicidal, years ago, and one final phone call stopped her. Brick & Mortar may not be faith-based, but they want to touch people's lives. A small part of that is writing uplifting messages on their coffee cups. Heather also hopes she can inspire/mentor other female entrepreneurs who, like her, may have though these dreams are not achievable. Growing up as a people pleaser, she's also learning to take care of herself. She also talks about how her life changed from losing her mom recently, after being her caregiver, and how the cafe community she build supported her so much. (24:45) The next business for her is a collaboration with the owner of local italian restaurant Treviolis called "The Collegiate Outpost" inside Columbus Technical College, a new concept for this part of GA. it's not just a place for coffee, sandwiches, pastries, pasta but also designed with a culinary internship program where students can learn skills and get future jobs at area restaurants, cafes. (27:37) Not owning a TV for the last few decades, Heather loves the outdoors - getting on the water and in the woods for decompression, stress relief, meditation. And Heather gets emotional talking about how her mom showed them how powerful and exciting it is to be out in nature. She also shares some wisdom she's learned from the valleys and mountaintops...her evolving from a judgmental young Christian to a person focused on love instead of legalism...plus some of her favorite coffee drinks. And I close out the episode talking about the pros and cons of coffee for your health and workouts, then a final prayer.
