Summer is in full swing, and anglers across Colorado are looking for opportunities to set a hook into the mouth of a fish across the state's incredible array of lakes, rivers and small streams. But with the state facing a historic drought, there is a lot for anglers to keep in mind.In this episode of the Colorado Outdoors podcast, we sit down with CPW Assistant Director Matt Nicholl, who oversees the Aquatic Wildlife Branch, as well as Josh Nehring, CPW's Deputy Assistant Director of the Aquatic Branch, to talk about all matters fishing in Colorado for 2026. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor released on June 4, 2026, all 64 counties in Colorado are currently experiencing at least Abnormally Dry conditions, while nearly 93% of the state is in Moderate to Exceptional Drought. Following the lowest snowpack accumulation season on record, May 1 streamflow forecasts projected runoff ranging from only 21% to 37% of median across Colorado river basins. Additionally, this water year (October 2025 - Present) has been the warmest on record in Colorado, contributing to early snowmelt, extremely low river flows, diminished soil moisture conditions and elevated wildfire risk statewide. This has an impact on anglers and may make many who hold a 2026 Colorado fishing license rethink areas they traditionally like to fish.Fishing in mornings or evenings when water temperatures are cooler will not only lead to better fish health but also more angler success. And not pressuring fisheries especially impacted by the drought will also benefit the long-term health of aquatic life.Hear our expert's tips on how to still have a great fishing season across Colorado despite the drought conditions and learn more about CPW's fisheries management in this new episode.Podcast hosted by Regional Public Information Officers John Livingston and Kara Van Hoose. Deep into Colorado's pheasant season, Corners for Conservation properties provide healthy winter habitat and welcome the next generation of hunters.Wading through a tangle of chest-high grasses on a cold morning. Pheasants flushing underfoot, cackling on the wing as they break for the horizon. Gold and pink light waxing across the sky at sunrise. Scanning the little green county road signs, looking for just the right number. Big smiles, and plenty of miles. In this episode of the Colorado Outdoors podcast, we take the show on the road. We visit some of our Corners for Conservation properties on the Eastern Plains in hopes of finding winter time roosters, and learning a thing or two along the way. From pollinator habitat and songbird stopovers to prime cold season country for Colorado's wild pheasants, Corners for Conservation fields are full of benefits (all year long). In the winter, they also serve as a place of exploration and learning for novice hunters, thanks to Pepper Canterbury and her hunter outreach program. Listen along as we chase birds, explore the prairie and soak up the rewards of a successful hunt.

Paddling the Chassahowitzka River feels like slipping into wild, untouched Florida. We launched in a tandem kayak with friends from our RV park and quickly found ourselves surrounded by quiet beauty—sunlit trees, birds warming their wings, and clear water winding through the springs. Then came the moment everyone hopes for: manatees. These gentle giants drifted right beneath our kayaks near the Crack, and we even saw mamas nursing their babies. With fish jumping around us and the peaceful flow of the river, it felt like kayaking through a hidden sanctuary. If you've ever wanted to paddle alongside manatees in their natural home, this river delivers pure magic—and reminds you that the best adventures happen when you slow down and let nature set the pace.We launched from the Chassahowitzka RV Park, $5 parking and $45 Tandem Kayak Rental.

Break 3: DTL HOLIDAY INTERVIEW - MARK BERENS - BERENS FROZEN CUSTARD STORY 6: Gwinnett County Public Library earns North American Innovation award for Hooper-Renwick Themed Library The Gwinnett County Public Library just snagged a huge honor—it’s been named a Top Innovator for 2025 by the Urban Libraries Council. Why? Their new Hooper-Renwick Themed Library in Lawrenceville, a space that’s all about equity, inclusion, and honoring history. “This award means the world to us,” said Charles Pace, GCPL’s executive director. “In a time when libraries face so many challenges, it’s a reminder of why we do what we do.” The library, built on the site of Gwinnett’s only pre-desegregation Black high school, blends history with modern resources, showcasing memorabilia and stories that deserve the spotlight. STORY 7: Lawrenceville's Baggett Elementary is GCPS's lone elementary school offering organized sports At Baggett Elementary, sports aren’t just about the game—they’re about giving kids a place to belong. Even though organized sports don’t officially start in Gwinnett County until middle school, a group of passionate teachers and staff decided to change that. It all started four years ago with basketball. Now? They’ve got T-ball, flag football, soccer, and cheerleading too. “We’ve basically built our own league,” said Jasmin Riley, the school’s PE teacher. The games are in-house—Baggett Blue vs. Baggett Red—but the energy is real. In this episode Katrin Tomanek describes how she moved from climbing to kayaking and developed a style of multiimodal trips that combine sea kayaking and cycling to minimize driving. She shares how she learned skills, used careful planning and spreadsheets, and progressed from local trips to big expeditions. Katrin recounts standout journeys including a foggy, remote Lost Coast outing, a 52‑day mostly-solo paddle through the Inside Passage, and a counterclockwise circumnavigation of Vancouver Island that finished with a bike ride across the island. She discusses navigation in fog, wildlife encounters, food and gear choices, and how solo days and unexpected social connections shaped her experience. #194 - What if adventure isn't something you chase, but something you create? That question sparks a sweeping journey with author and explorer Rick Glaze—from small-town Tennessee roots to whitewater rapids, open-ocean sails, limestone caves, and a treasure map that refuses to sit still. We dig into the stories behind The Purple River, Spanish Pieces of Eight, and Eight Pieces of Eight, and how real rapids, big water, and Caribbean passages shaped the fiction that readers can't put down.Rick opens up about the turning points that changed his course: a fear at the top of a long Rogue River rapid, the serendipity of spotting a piece of eight on a tiny island, and the joy of learning to sail after years of kayaking. He explains how songwriting and novel writing use time differently—compressing a life into three verses versus slowing a moment into a chapter—and why both require the same core ingredient: a spark you carry into the work. You'll hear how family dynamics fuel a high-stakes treasure hunt across islands, why a “magic map” demands courage from a young protagonist in Tennessee's vast cave system, and how a dog-and-cat-narrated, laugh-out-loud tale of 1959 grew from a pandemic pivot. We also get practical about the creative life today. Rick talks candidly about discoverability in a noisy world, the shifting sands of social media, and the discipline it takes to keep shipping stories and songs. His advice lands with a friendly thud: begin ugly. Write the first novel so the second can exist. Play the first nine shaky shows so the tenth can sing. Whether you're a paddler, a sailor, a reader of adventure fiction, or a creator looking for a push, this conversation blends craft, courage, and curiosity into a guide you can actually use.If you enjoyed the episode, tap follow, share it with a friend who loves adventure stories, and leave a quick rating or review so more listeners can find the show. In this episode of Travel Along with Laura, we're back on the volcanic island of Ometepe in Lake Nicaragua. This time, we head to the lowlands between the two volcanoes to kayak along the Río Istian, where the wildlife is on display- howler monkeys calling from the trees, caimans gliding below the surface, toothy tropical gars submerged in the muck and the curious song of the Tungara frog echoing through the dusk. Along the way, we'll walk to a mountainside ecolodge, hear about Laura's ongoing truce with Google Maps, and get a glimpse into rural life on the island. Plus, we'll dive into the legend of Lake Nicaragua's freshwater sharks through a catchy song written by Raúl Planas—an ode to a creature that may or may not still haunt these waters.Musical Credits:Track: Summer Samba (Samba de Verao) by Mu'gambi and Playa Valencia by The Like Thes provided by: Slipstream Music https://slipstreammusic.comEl Tiburon del Lago Cacibolca was used with permission from its authors: Raul Planas and the Ritmo en Los Barrios project.Support the showBuy any of these products that I fully stand behind- and I'll earn a commission.
