Mike is the creator of Profit First, which is used by hundreds of thousands of companies across the globe to drive profit. He is the creator of Clockwork, a powerful method to make any business run on automatic. His latest book Get Different (released September 21, 2021) will give you the tools to stand out in any market. Today, Mike leads two new multi-million-dollar ventures, as he tests his latest business research for his books. 230: Become Your Own Banker to Control Your Finances with Mark Willis Joining me on the podcast today is Mark Willis. He's the owner of Lake Growth Financial Services, a financial firm in Chicago, Illinois. Mark is going to lead us on the journey of understanding our financials better. We're going to be looking at how to be the bank for our company, what it means to take back ownership, money, and lending instead of being a slave to the banks or to somebody else holding a note over our head or having so much debt that we don't know how to get out from under it. Mark will share stories and give us methodologies and mindset changes so that we too can be in full control of our finances.  Topics Mentioned: Cost of Debt  Building Wealth  Money Mindset  Generational Wealth  Key Thoughts:   That became my mantra, I want to be better than debt free. And so, as a financial planner, now, I help people become better than debt free. I have since paid off my debts. But more than that, I bought them back by becoming my own banker, paying the student loan snakes off, and actually collecting that money from myself to get a profit off the debt that I once paid to somebody else. Mark Willis (6:03)   It's kind of the Profit First dilemma that we see all the money sitting in the bank account, and they just start taking it. What they've done in essence, is they rob the company coffers to live a lavish lifestyle, to go on trips to fix up their house, to do whatever, to pay a medical bill. I don't care what it is. But they took it from the business prior to when it should have been taken. And now the business is running lean, and they're struggling. And it was the entire lifeblood to build their life and they just destroyed the lifeblood. Michele (23:23)   When you have the bank, you control the whole card table. Imagine how this would work in almost every business. Mark Willis (42:07)   Today has been all about taking back control. And I want to encourage you to do that. Because if you own it, you can change it. And that's the beautiful thing about profit. We're building it. “A shoe is just a shoe until my son steps into it.” —Deloris Jordan When negotiating Michael Jordan's famous shoe deal with Nike, his mom Deloris “made an additional demand: Her son must receive not only a $250,000 fee, but also a cut from every sneaker sold,” making her case with that mic drop moment above (as retold in the movie Air via The New York Times article ‘Air' and the Argument for Letting the Talent Share in the Profits). That, my friends, is the power of licensing :) Today's episode is the first of a two-parter — an in-depth addition to 140: How to License Your IP (Intellectual Property), thanks to a set of wonderfully thorough follow-up questions from BFF member Al Dia. Al is the founder of MBASchooled.com, author of MBA Insider, and host of the MBA Insider podcast. He asked a series of questions across five categories, and in this episode I'll be addressing the first two: product development and client attraction strategies. A caveat as always, when it comes to this notoriously opaque arena: what I'm sharing is not the way, it's just what I've learned along the way in nearly a decade of building out licensing as a revenue stream. Tara Newman is the Founder and CEO of The Bold Profit Academy, where she teaches service-based business owners how to sell premium services and programs without the emotional stress of launching, worrying about ads, overwhelming social strategies or complex funnels. Tara hosts a weekly podcast called The Bold Money Revolution and has been featured in publications like Money Magazine, Yahoo Finance, and Huffington Post as well as other publications and podcasts. She earned her Master's in Organizational Psychology from Hofstra University, has over 20 years of experience, is a certified Profit First Professional and holds an advanced level Reiki Certification. Everything she teaches incorporates Energy, Mindset and Strategy as a framework for resiliency and results.   Here's what we covered on the episode: Businesses Transparancy  We touch on how weird the world of digital selling is right now and about having open conversations around it Tara says she was a high school failure because of undiagnosed ADHD but thrived in college because she found something she was passionate about, which was psychology - she went into industrial organizational psychology, which is the study of human behavior at work In 2005, Tara and her husband started their first business but went bankrupt in 2010, shortly after the recession Tara started her third business in 2014, which is something she felt she could never do because she was coming into her business at such a disadvantage financially and physically but had to figure out how to make 6-figures independent of an employer   When she started her business in 2014, Tara was 38 years old and shared that she had never been responsible for her own finances, which was another disadvantage How we often forget that many people are necessity entrepreneurs, and most people leave their jobs out of necessity because of illness, stress, wanting flexibility, and wanting to replace their income Tara first had to figure out how to pay herself $100,000 because she was making more than that in her corporate career and shared that it took her years to get to that point – she had to learn how to sell, communicate the value of her work, position herself, understand her target audience, etc. After the first year, Tara realized she had a viable business but says she had the embarrassing realization that $100,000 in revenue is not the same as $100,000 in her paycheck It wasn't until year 3 in Tara's business that she was able to pay herself significantly, and she is transparent in saying that her pay has gone up and down over the years Just because someone says they have made $100,000 in a month or a year doesn't mean that's what they're profiting or paying themselves The framework Tara uses is the Profit First Framework – they provide a free revenue goal calculator that reverse engineers your revenue goal to make sure you can pay yourself what you need to meet your personal financial goals and expenses Tara explains it is possible to pay yourself $100,000 on $200,000 - $250,000 a year in revenue, but it depends on your business expenses   91% of Tara's Instagram community believes that social media over-glamourizes what's happening in small businesses and shares that in 2018, 88% of women small business owners earned less than $100,000 in revenue a year – only 1% are making over 1 million dollars We bust the myth that one-on-one work drains you and isn't as profitable because, personally, I've discovered that's how I work best Profit First Framework Profit First is a book by Mike Michalowicz, and it's a cash flow management system; it's not accounting – Profit First helps you make intentional money decisions, gives you clarity and a language to talk about money   Normally, profit = sales – expenses, but Mike said no, that's not the right formula and said we need to use sales – profit = expenses In Profit First, you pay yourself first, then set money aside for taxes, and then what's left over in your business is what you use to pay your expenses The first thing you want to do with your profit is pay off any debt you may have, then put 50% of your profit away as a cushion in your business until you feel comfortable and then once you've done that, you can take your profit as a reward for all your hard work, and then the next step is putting aside money for taxes and paying your everyday lifestyle expenses   Tara explains how to use their free revenue calculator and shares that when you work with a Profit First professional, it could take 18 months to get you from where you are to where you want to be – you have to be patient and know it doesn't happen overnight When it comes to working with clients, Tara works with those who are just starting, making zero, and says there is never a better time to create a cash-flow management system, but she also works with large businesses that are bringing in 60 million dollars in revenue How Tara has been able to create her offers to meet the right size business at the right point – her one-on-one work is typically for larger businesses, and she says she's mindful of what she's charging at what point in their business because she wants them to keep more of their money The Bold Profit Academy is a learning container because Tara has found that there are just a few knowledge and skill gaps in getting people to the revenue they desire Use the free revenue goal calculator, check out Tara's free podcast, The Bold Money Revolution, and feel free to reach out to her    Links mentioned: Free Revenue Goal Calculator  The Bold Money Revolution The Bold Profit Academy   Like what you heard?  Click here to subscribe + leave a review on iTunes. My Business On Purpose
632: How To Get Buy-In From Partners

My Business On Purpose

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 19, 2023 8:32

Partnerships are hard.  I've heard it said, “the only ship that doesn't sail is a partnership.” Partnerships sound great in theory, almost a no-brainer structure for a small business.  You get two (or more) minds, two skill sets, and twice the available time that in many cases can lead to an exponential outcome.   You also typically get two visions, two opinions, and divergent expectations. Many partnerships function just enough but don't thrive. In the hundreds of partnerships that we've been exposed to we've only seen two that can seriously claim that the business is in far better shape due to the partnership than without.   I met with a startup excavating contractor who laid out his plan for his young business, including the threshold levels that would be achieved in order for a second person to be given 49% of his youthful company.   My first question to this eager and excited business owner was, “is this formally agreed upon and in writing?” “Yes.” He assured me that the friend-soon-to-be-owner would be bringing skill sets that the founder does not have.  While I'm sure that is true, often it will also force the owner to miss out on lessons that will be crucial for him to learn up front that will be buffered and absorbed by someone else.   Nonetheless, the deal is inked, so the next question becomes, “how do I work with a partner in a synergistic, agreeable, valuable, and productive way?” There are three non-negotiables of working in a co-owner environment that must be committed proactively. First,  you must co-write a multi-page vision story that defines the future snapshot of the business.  Where there is a vacuum of vision a business and its people become chaff subject to the various swirls of the wind and will (not might… but will) be blown in a variety of non-congruent directions.   You will scatter. Once written the partners will be well served to review the written vision no less than every-other-month and make appropriate adjustments based on new information.   The partnership is akin to a boat floating out on an ocean in need of an immovable lighthouse reminding each of the unified direction of the business as life evolves and emotions manipulate.   This regular review of the vision offers each owner a reminder of the agreed upon direction along with an opportunity to clarify. Second, the partnership must prioritize a dedicated, face to face check in no less than once monthly.  This check-in should incorporate pre-determined questions that will uncover desires, blind spots, encouragement, frustrations, and a platform to have the conversation that each may wish to avoid.   This meeting will be easy to bypass due to “busy-ness” or an apathetic “we're ok”.  This meeting should be non-negotiable no matter how good or bad the relationship is going; preset on each calendar and no excuses to allow retreat.   The third element to help maintain the communication channel of a partnership; each partner needs a written non-owner role that supports the organizational day to day of the business.   Most partnerships play the excuse card of “we're too busy to have roles, we just need to do what needs to get done.” This is an endless cycle of chaos and inefficient busy-work which leads to bitterness because inevitably one partner will perceive themselves to be working far harder in the business than the other.   Each partner needs a written job role and that role carries a salary.  All partners should be compensated in two channels; salary and owner draws. The partner salary may include incentive compensation based on the role, and is the salary that the partner budgets her life around.  The owner draws should be scheduled throughout the year with a pre-determined draw schedule or agreement. For instance, Mike Michalowicz, the author of Profit First recommends setting up a bank account entitled “Profit”, a set percentage of receivables gets swept into the profit account twice monthly and then the first of each quarter (April 1, July 1, etc.) the owner's draw 50% of whatever is in the profit account.   You can coordinate whatever draw schedule you would like but it should be predetermined, written, and followed with no exceptions.  Money disagreements will implode a good partnership with swift expediency; most never see it coming till it is indeed too late.   When a partnership has a collective vision, a means of regular communication, and clarity of day to day role, then the partnership has the necessary channels for partner communication setting the stage for a thoughtful flow of your ideas, thoughts, concerns, desires, and dreams to be heard, vetted, and decided-upon.   Partnerships of any kind are hard because they involve the moveable and oft unpredictable variable of emotion and subjectivity.   Not all is black and white, but there are foundations of understanding that can be poured well in advance of an emotional hurricane.   When you enter a partnership you willfully give up certain levels of predictability and controls.  You can fight to maintain 100% autonomy, which will end in 100% meltdown, or you can set a course of pre-planning, clarity, and frequency of communication.   In a partnership, that is a voice you do have.

“Most authors give up too soon. They give up before they finish their book, they give up on their publishing plan, because it takes too long. And then if they do manage to get their book to market, they give up on selling it,” shares AJ Harper, editor and publishing strategist, head writing coach for Heroic Public Speaking, writing partner to business author Mike Michalowicz, and author of Write a Must-Read: Craft a Book That Changes Lives--Including Your Own. Today, AJ calls on her years of experience working with bestselling authors to talk about how to write a must-read book. The first step to writing a book is knowing who your reader is. By knowing exactly who you are writing for, what they need, and what they perceive is standing in their way, you can write a book that speaks directly to their experience. When people feel seen on the first page of a book, they are likely to continue reading. The next step is to get very clear on your core message. This should be a fundamental truth that can create change in the reader even if that message is the only thing they read. Once you have written a book with a specific reader in mind and a clear core message, the most important thing to do is just to not give up! Stay persistent and put the time and work into your publishing plan and marketing strategies for selling your book.If you have been wanting to write a book that will help other people, you need to first decide who exactly you want to write for. What change are you hoping for the reader to make? How do you want them to feel when they read your book? These are all things to consider before getting to the publishing or marketing steps. Quotes“If you're writing a book that's designed to help someone, you have to know who that someone is.” (8:33-8:37 | AJ)“If they can see themselves on the first page where you are honoring their experience and they feel like you get them, they're going to keep turning the page.” (10:38-10:48 | AJ)“Knowing your reader is such a huge part of not just writing and editing the book, but how you position it in the marketplace.” (11:50-11:56 | AJ)“A book is not about something, it's for someone.” (12:30-12:33 | AJ) “Most authors give up too soon. They give up before they finish their book, they give up on their publishing plan, because it takes too long. And then if they do manage to get their book to market, they give up on selling it.” (28:42-28:56 | AJ)“There's very few things on earth that are more transformational than a book.” (35:18-35:23 | AJ)LinksConnect with Welcome to ElomaInstagram: @welcometoelomaWebsite: WelcometoEloma.comWeekly Email Newsletter: bit.ly/RIXEmail Connect with AJ HarperLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/anjanetteharper/Website: https://ajharper.comConnect with KileySocial: @kileypeters + Linkedin.com/in/kileypetersWebsites: RAYNEIX.com ,
