How Shannon Sagan used a memorable niche to drive referrals and build a sellable brand. On this episode of Great Practice, Great Life®, Steve Riley welcomes personal injury attorney Shannon Sagan, better known as The Dash Cam Lawyer. Shannon shares his incredible story of how niching for lawyers, done with purpose and creativity, transformed his career from a defense firm associate into a standout personal injury attorney with a national reputation. Shannon's journey proves that when you lean into what makes you different, you can dominate even the most competitive markets. His passion for dash cams became more than a tool for evidence, it became the foundation of a powerful personal brand. By combining his legal expertise with smart, memorable marketing, Shannon created The Dash Cam Lawyer, a name clients remember and trust. Through niching for lawyers, Shannon built a thriving practice rooted in authenticity. Instead of chasing every case, he focused on organic referrals and strategic branding. That focus helped him rise above large firms, earn recognition, and even launch his own custom dash cam on Amazon. He discusses the process of trademarking his brand, using social media to amplify his message, and balancing creativity with credibility. Beyond branding, Shannon opens up about the habits and mindset that fuel his success. He credits his morning routine, ongoing coaching, and consistent self-discipline as keys to maintaining growth in a fast-paced, competitive field. Together, Steve and Shannon explore how focus, perseverance, and a clear niche can elevate both your practice and your life. This episode is a masterclass in standing out through specialization. Whether you're just starting your firm or ready to redefine your brand, Shannon's story will inspire you to find your own lane and own it. In this episode, you will hear: Shannon Sagan's transition from defense lawyer to The Dash Cam Lawyer and niche marketing success Importance of niche marketing in the legal field and how it differentiates Shannon in a competitive market Benefits and usage of dash cams in legal disputes and personal injury cases Shannon's journey in entrepreneurship, including launching a custom dash cam on Amazon The role of social media and innovative branding in expanding Shannon's legal practice Personal growth practices, such as morning routines, and their impact on professional success Advice for young lawyers on networking, marketing, and establishing a unique legal niche Subscribe & Review Never miss an episode. Danielle's entrepreneurial journey begins in Nashville, where early roots shaped her Maverick mindset. From founding her first agency to taking risks that most would shy away from, she carved her own path with bold decisions and relentless drive. That spirit would ultimately fuel her transition from scrappy beginnings to leading multiple companies valued at over $50 million—all while working just ten hours a week.A defining lesson came from the infamous “Larry” mishire, which taught Danielle the cost of compromising on talent. Out of that experience grew her unwavering standard for five-star employees, backed by objective assessments and scorecards instead of traditional resumes. This shift not only elevated her team's performance but also transformed company culture, margins, and her own time freedom. Her discipline didn't stop at people—it extended to money. Adopting Profit First gave Danielle financial clarity, stronger partnerships, and the ability to scale without chaos. Pairing this with daily huddles kept her teams aligned, accountable, and agile, enabling fast course corrections that protected momentum and morale. Mapping ideal weeks became another tool to accelerate onboarding and embed focus into daily operations.Looking ahead, Danielle is doubling down on her mission to revolutionize hiring. With Five-Star Central, she envisions replacing resume-driven roulette with smarter, skills-based matching that could one day unseat Indeed. Along the way, mentors, peer forums, and collaborations with leaders like Mike Michalowicz (on All In) have sharpened her strategies. Danielle's story is a playbook on scaling smarter—proving that the right people, processes, and priorities can create extraordinary results with far less grind. Please visit www.internationalfacilitatorsorganization.com to learn more about Mo Fathelbab and International Facilitators Organization (IFO), a leading provider of facilitators and related group facilitation services, providing training, certification, marketing services, education, and community for peer group facilitators at all stages of their career.

So many entrepreneurs get stuck in the mindset that profit is what is leftover from business expenses. But this tends to leave business owners as the last ones getting paid - even though they are the ones accepting all of the risk and responsibility. However, there are long-term ramifications of this mindset. When lawyers are paying themselves last, they risk damaging their emotional health, home relationships, and general wellbeing. As personal financial stress piles up, they are less likely to serve their clients or business well, damaging the long term sustainability of their practices. Ben Hockema joins today to discuss: The risks of lawyers paying themselves last How to implement the “Profit First” business model How to balance paying yourself while still fueling your business Visit Ben online here: https://www.illuminatewm.com/. 182: Bookkeeping For Therapists Behind the Scenes: Gatekeeping vs Alignment

Money Skills For Therapists

While we often view bookkeepers as the magicians of our business finances, appreciating their attention to detail, their ability to categorize and match debits and credits, and for keeping our finances organized, there also exists the perception of a gap between the business owner's and the bookkeeper's knowledge of how money works. This lack of understanding can lead to miscommunications and underappreciation for the work that therapists or bookkeepers do. Sara Walls has seen both sides of the coin, having experienced being the therapist who needed help managing the business finances to becoming the bookkeeper who now helps therapists with their money. She actually left private practice for a few years until she discovered additional tools like Profit First by Mike Michalowicz and Linzy's course, “Money Skills for Therapists” (links below). In fact, one of her biggest realizations that helped push her to pursue help is summarized nicely with this quote: (00:06:17) "It became clear the more I got into it that what I didn't know was how much I could actually afford to pay myself, when I could pay myself, how consistently I could pay myself, exactly how much I should be saving for taxes." - Sara Walls Learn about her journey from therapist to bookkeeper for therapists, some financial management tips for neurodivergent private practice owners, ways to develop good financial habits to reduce stress about money and gain a deeper understanding of what a good bookkeeper can do for your business. Reducing Stress and Enhancing Financial Management with Accountability (00:02:45) Bookkeepers' Unrecognized Complexity in Accounting Profession (00:08:45) Therapist turned Bookkeeper shares financial insights (00:19:10) Bookkeepers: Undervalued and Underpaid Professionals (00:20:58) Routine Financial Engagement for Reduced Money Stress (00:28:44) Financial Co-Regulation for Enhanced Accountability (00:30:37) Financial Literacy Training for Therapists Establishing Open Lines of Communication & Good Financial Habits for Long-Term Success Finding an aligned service provider when it comes to your business finances may require an interview or other setting where you can determine their level of transparency, their defensiveness or openness when you ask questions, and their expectation of your two roles in the business relationship. Some bookkeepers may gatekeep as their defensive reaction to “protecting” their value. Similarly, some practice owners may not recognize the complexity of the work required to keep the business finances straight. Here are immediate ways to improve your bookkeeping and financial management skills in your therapy practice: Establish a financial routine: Regularly approach your finances, whether it's checking your bank app, updating spreadsheets, or using accounting software like QuickBooks. Systemize & organize: Keep track of your income and expenses systematically to avoid falling behind, implementing some automation and delegation to help along the way. Learn basic accounting: Seek basic understanding of financial concepts like debits and credits. This knowledge can empower you to manage your finances more effectively. Find assistance & accountability: Work with a qualified bookkeeper who understands the specific needs of therapists and small business owners and who openly answers your questions and provides transparency. Avoid the “it's a write-off!” trap: While deductions are beneficial, ensure you have enough cash flow to pay yourself and set aside funds for...

Writing a book can transform your personal brand and business, but too many authors get stuck battling that nagging inner critic:  “Will anyone even read this?” Susie deVille and AJ Harper explain how that voice isn't a stop sign. It's a signal you're onto something worth sharing. Susie is the founder of the Innovation and Creativity Institute and bestselling author of Buoyant: The Entrepreneur's Guide to Becoming Wildly Successful, Creative, and Free. AJ is the author of Write a Must-Read and a longtime co-writer with Mike Michalowicz (known famously for the book Profit First). Together, they guide authors to create prescriptive nonfiction books that don't just make sales—they're read, acted on, and shared. Taming Your Inner Critic If you've ever heard that voice whisper, “No one's going to read this,” you're not alone.  AJ shows you how to keep writing anyway—by setting simple word-count goals, stripping away perfection pressure, and treating self-doubt as proof you're moving in the right direction.  Susie shares how leaning into those tough “dark dog” moments can actually lead to breakthroughs, helping you spot the real through-line of your book. Marketing That Lasts Finishing your manuscript is just the beginning. Susie and AJ reveal why most authors quit too soon and how you can avoid the same trap.  Forget chasing sales numbers or mimicking what everyone else is doing. Instead, focus on building genuine resonance with your readers and choosing marketing channels that feel natural to you.  PLUS: Don't miss out on a huge $1,500 discount for their Beyond (or Before) the Launch Virtual Retreat (September 25–27, 2025) when you use code GOGOGO. It's going to take too long to deal with all of our self-esteem issues. Let's just get to work.” 32:31 - 32:47 AJ “It's important to say things in different ways, the same point in different ways, but also at different times, because someone may need to have gone a little bit further along in their journey to hear the thing again.” Quotes AJ “You really do need community. Click here now to access the tool > ‍ How to Grow a Business You Love by Serving the Right People at the Right Value Does it ever seem like you're giving everything to your business, yet the success you pictured still feels just out of reach? In this episode of The Brilliant Book Festival, I'm joined by Mike Michalowicz, author of nine business books including Profit First and The Pumpkin Plan, to explore how entrepreneurs can escape what he calls “entrepreneurial poverty” and create a business that runs smoothly, profitably and in alignment with their strengths. Mike shares why the secret to growth isn't serving everyone, but identifying the right clients, pricing in a way that reflects your true value, and letting go of the rest (without guilt). We talk about why bad-fit clients drain more than your bank account, how to attract people who value what you offer, and why you should always love yourself enough to charge what you're worth. If you've been caught in the cycle of over-delivering, undercharging, and feeling too stretched to serve your best clients well, this conversation will help you see a simpler, more sustainable path forward - one that makes space for better clients, better work and a better life. ‍ ‍ Prefer to WATCH instead of read? Click here to watch this episode on YouTube ‍ ‍ “Price is the ultimate marketing method. It tells the world how valuable you believe your work is.” – Mike Michalowicz ‍ ‍ Why Pricing is More Than a Number Most entrepreneurs fear raising prices, but as Mike explains, pricing isn't just about covering costs. It's a signal to the market about the quality and impact of your work. When you charge appropriately, you attract clients who align with your value, and you create the capacity to serve them at your best. ‍ ‍ Letting Go of the Wrong Clients It's tempting to hold on to every paying client, but the wrong ones cost far more than they contribute. Mike shares strategies for identifying unfit clients, and how to release them in a way that's professional, kind, and freeing - making space for your business to grow in the right direction. ‍ ‍ “Your best business will always grow from your best clients. Focus there, and create more space for them to thrive with you.” – Mike Michalowicz ‍ ‍ The Three Questions that Unlock Growth Mike offers three simple but powerful questions to ask your best clients, questions that reveal what makes you stand out, how you can differentiate yourself from the industry, and where to find more people just like them. ‍ ‍ From “Doing it All” to Designing a Business that Runs Without You We discuss the trap of the “superhero entrepreneur” who tries to do everything themselves, and why true leadership means designing a business that thrives without your constant presence. Mike explains how he tests this by taking a four-week (sometimes seven-week) annual vacation, and how it's made his business stronger. ‍ ‍ If you only take one thing away from this episode… Your best business will come from your best clients. Focus on them, price in alignment with your value, and give your business the space it needs to grow - without burning yourself out. ‍ ‍ Final Thought to Reflect On?
