A lot has changed when it comes to hair since the Cranford Barber Shop opened. Crew cuts gave way to long hair. Getting a haircut also meant getting a shave for many men and while they were waiting they might have their shoes shined.The shop, which had its last day on April 27, cut the hair on countless Cranford kids and adults. It was one of the first barber shops in town to also cut the hair of women and girls. On the day after the closure, I visited the store to talk with two family members, Rich Marsiglia and Mark Manto about memories they have of the shop and why they had to shut the doors.On a happy note, it's been announced the shop will be reopening at 108 Walnut Avenue in June.
A developer is planning to build as many as 48 townhomes in Eastern Henrico's Highland Park community. Canterbury Development Group LLC is proposing to build the development on 5.6 acres located along the east side of the intersection of Walnut Avenue and Radcliffe Avenue. The homes would be along a private looped road connecting to Walnut Avenue. The development would have more than eight units an acre, which is almost twice the units per acre of the existing neighborhood and two units an acre more than the current zoning standard. The Sunny Acres Civic Association and 120 Walnut Avenue were recognized Sunday afternoon with the 2018 Cranford Historic Preservation Awards by the Cranford Historical Society and the Cranford Historic Preservation Advisory Board in a ceremony at the Hanson House.
