Somaya Critchlow talks to Ben Luke about her influences—from writers to musicians, film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped her life and work. Critchlow, born in London in 1993, makes paintings and drawings of Black women, often nude, that are rooted in the present and yet draw on a wealth of imagery from the recent and distant past. The women are fictional but can be informed by anything from self-portraits and other life studies to images from pop culture and depictions of women in the history of art. They engage frankly with what it means to represent the female body and with power relations: between the artist and her subject, between the subject and the viewer, and ultimately between Critchlow and us. Depending on your perspective, her art offers different degrees of delight and discomfort. But her balance of fine drawing, a time-honoured approach to paint and colour, and arresting imagery means that her work is endlessly intriguing. She discusses the breakthrough moment where she realised that she was her own first model, being “comfortable with feeling uncomfortable”, the influence on her of Angela Carter's response to the Marquis de Sade, her engagement with a wealth of visual artists, from Käthe Kollwitz to Francesca Woodman, Leonor Fini, Titian and Francesco de Goya, the power of David Lynch's films and the consistent importance to her of Japanese manga. She gives insight into her life in the studio and responds to our usual questions, including the ultimate: what is art for?Somaya Critchlow: The Chamber, Dulwich Picture Gallery, London, until 20 July. Group shows: A Room Hung with Thoughts British Painting Now, Green Family Art Foundation, Dallas, US, until 11 May; Woman in a Rowboat, Olivia Foundation, Mexico City, until 28 September. This podcast is sponsored by Bloomberg Connects, the arts and culture app. The free app offers access to a vast range of international cultural organisations through a single download, with new guides being added regularly. They include the Dulwich Picture Gallery, where Somaya Critchlow is showing her work between February and July of 2025. If you download Bloomberg Connects you'll find that the guide to the gallery has a section on the exhibition, with pictures of Somaya's work in situ in the historic gallery spaces. There is also extensive content on the gallery's other exhibition, Tirzah Garwood: Beyond Ravilious, the first major exhibition of the British artist. You can explore the works while listening to the actor Tamsin Greig reading excerpts from Garwood's autobiography. Elsewhere, the guide features an animated film telling the story of the gallery and a guided tour of the many masterpieces in its collection. Hosted on Acast. On this week's podcast, Bret Thorn, senior food & beverage editor of Nation's Restaurant News and Restaurant Hospitality, said that the holiday season is actually a quiet time for him, with fewer media events as restaurants are busy serving paying customers, so the only party he went to this week was the holiday party of his own company, Informa, where he drank martinis and ate some interesting spring rolls — one topped with trendy chili crisp and another with Southeast Asian aromatics like makrut lime leaf. Pat Cobe, senior menu editor of Restaurant Business, was at the party too, and noticed how many Espresso Martinis were being ordered. She also found other events to go to, including one at Meduza Mediterrania in NYC's Meatpacking District, which was, in fact, Yelp's top restaurant for 2024, based on reviews. It was very trend-forward with Eastern Mediterranean dips, seafood towers and passed lamb chops. She also checked out a new restaurant at Grand Central Terminal, Grand Brasserie, where she enjoyed a very French trout amandine. Then Bret shared clips from an interview with Daniel Garwood, who is chef at Acru, a restaurant that opened in New York's West Village in October. Originally from Australia, Garwood arrived in the United States in 2022 and landed a job as sous chef of the popular modern Korean restaurant Atomix before being put in charge of Acru where, among other things, he is serving dry-aged steaks from dairy cows.

There's been a lot of debate about what the relationship should be between videographic criticism and writing. Some have wondered if video essays could function as stand-alone scholarship and break free from having to be framed by text-based explanations such as creator statements or peer reviews. But even if one acknowledges the role of writing in advancing videographic scholarship, another question emerges: which writing? At this year's SCMS annual meeting in Boston, videographic scholars Evelyn Kreutzer and Alan O'Leary observed that several video essay presentations would cite texts from feminist film studies, genre film studies, global film studies, etc. But there wasn't so much reference to existing writing about videographic scholarship. And it got them thinking, why aren't videographic scholars giving more attention to writing about video essays? Haven't there been examples of written scholarship that are worth referencing, in shaping our thinking about the form? Is it that they aren't known well enough or established enough to be cited? And how can we start to get a better appreciation of the role of writing in video essay scholarship? Evelyn and Alan recorded this conversation to get into these questions. Evelyn asked Alan to come up with two written essays that could be especially helpful in understanding videographic scholarship. Alan came up with about 6 or 7, which can be found in the show notes. From those they picked two to discuss in depth, leading to a rich and contentious conversation about what scholars want from video essays, and what role writing has in determining the answers to that question. This episode is the sixth in an ongoing collaboration between The Video Essay Podcast and "The Video Essay: Memories, Ecologies, Bodies," a three-year research project on video essays led by Kevin B. Since arriving to Texas from Europe 4 generations ago, Slade Schiurring's family has produced rice on Texas's fabled Garwood Prairie. Waterfowl, too! It was his grandfather who returned from the Second World War and began leveeing the 3S Ranch property specifically for waterfowl. Slade describes his family's long-standing commitments to both rice farming and to waterfowl conservation, telling how they each go hand in hand; how both have changed drastically. As the past meteorically collides with the future, a real battle for agricultural land, for duck habitat, for water--essentially for a since-forever way of life on the prairie--is raging. In the latest episode of "Chef AF", we welcomed Chef Daniel Garwood, a culinary force to be reckoned with. Currently, the Sous Chef at Atomix in New York City – the restaurant that recently made waves by ranking No. 8 in the 2023 World's 50 Best Restaurants list – Garwood is more than just a chef; he's a global storyteller. From Tasmania to the World StageBorn in Launceston, Tasmania, Chef Garwood started his culinary journey in local Tasmanian restaurants, where his passion for foraging, grilling, and using all-natural ingredients blossomed. His global expeditions led him to hone his skills in world-renowned kitchens from Sweden to South Korea, and all the way to the heart of New York City.It is at Atomix that Chef Garwood combines his rich tapestry of international experiences with the unique essence of New York – a city known for its diverse culinary landscape. While the foundation is Korean-inspired, the execution is globally nuanced, resulting in a menu that is distinctly "Korean but not."As we chatted about Atomix, it became clear that New York City is more than just a workplace for Daniel. The city's melange of cultures has shaped his approach at Atomix. However, Daniel humbly credits the restaurant's unique identity mostly to Chef Junghyun 'JP' Park, considering himself in a supportive role.Mentorship and The Power of NetworkingWe delved deep into the pivotal role mentorship plays in shaping culinary careers. Daniel's recent U.S. Regional Winner title at The S.Pellegrino Young Chef Academy Competition is a testament to this. His relationship with mentor Chef Nina Compton, from Compère Lapin in New Orleans, has been transformative. With her guidance, Chef Garwood has navigated the challenges of the competition, simultaneously staying authentic to his culinary ethos. But mentorship wasn't the only gain from the SPYCA competition. Daniel's victory opened doors to elite culinary platforms such as the James Beard Foundation, introducing him to chefs and initiatives championing community welfare and employee well-being.Signature Dishes and Culinary IdentityDaniel's Aged Duck and Persimmon in Tak Cheongju with Banchan Through The Eyes of a Traveler dish stands out not just for its flavor but the narrative it tells. Each element, from the choice of wood for grilling to the unique preparation techniques, traces back to a place or moment in Chef Garwood's life. For instance, during his stint at Firedoor in Sydney, Chef Garwood was introduced to grilling with various woods, each infusing the dish with a distinctive flavor profile. In the competition, his signature dish embodies this ethos, incorporating techniques inspired by countries he's graced with his culinary touch.Mental Health in the Culinary LimelightThe conversation took a poignant turn when they touched upon mental health – an issue close to Chef Garwood's heart. In collaboration with his wife, Sooky An, Daniel released "Oralis: A Conversation on Food and Mental Health," bringing awareness to the mental challenges faced by culinary professionals. By hosting dinner events, creating dialogue, and promoting practices like journaling and fitness, Chef Garwood is championing a change in the industry's perspective towards mental well-being.Aspirations and What Lies AheadNew York City may be home for now, but Chef Garwood has plans. He dreams of opening a large-scale bar restaurant, focusing on grilling with varied woods – an experience he feels NYC is missing. For those eager to experience Chef Garwood's culinary magic, you can find him at Atomix. However, snagging a reservation, especially at the 14-seat chef's counter, is no small feat given the high demand. The conversation with Chef Daniel left us inspired and waiting with bated breath for the Grand Finale of the S.Pellegrino Young Chef Academy Competition in October. Chef Daniel Garwood, with his signature dish and global experiences, is undoubtedly one to watch.

We were devastated to learn of the passing of Julie Garwood, honest to God romance doyenne, last month. Garwood installed many of our buttons, and the buttons of so many romance readers who came up reading “The Four J's,” and, more importantly, paved the way for historicals with humor. She was, without question, a trailblazer. While we were unable to interview her for our trailblazer series, we couldn't let her passing go without an episode, so please enjoy our read along of The Bride, which is a nearly perfect book even now, decades after she wrote it. While our thoughts are with with Julie Garwood's family, her friends, and the legions of readers she delighted over her long and legendary career, our endless gratitude is with Julie Garwood herself—for the laughter, the sighs, and the absolute bangers that were her books. If you want more Fated Mates in your life, you are welcome at our Patreon, which comes with an extremely busy and fun Discord community! This week we interview New Jersey musician Brian Fallon. As a music fan, you probably know him from his many solo albums or his group work with The Gaslight Anthem. As a New Jersey fan, you might know him as "someone who did the local scene proud and is also personal friends with Bruce Springsteen now, which is wild." We talk about all of these topics, plus MANY others, including the importance of Crossroads in Garwood, the grease trucks, and a *LOT* of philosophy on stage banter.Since the beginning of NJITW, one of the most requested guests has been Brian. We're really psyched it came together, and thank him for taking the time for talking to us about all things Jersey. Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast.
