In this episode, Rabbi Ben presents a profound teaching from the *Degel Machaneh Ephraim* on the transformation of Jacob to Israel. Through a mystical lens, we explore Jacob's wrestling with God and man, his ascent from constriction to expansiveness, and the deeper significance of his name change. Drawing on the *gematria* connection between *Elohim* (God) and *HaTeva* (nature), Rabbi Ben reveals how Jacob's journey symbolizes our own struggles to rise above the limitations of the natural world and find divine presence in every moment. Tune in to uncover the timeless wisdom of this story and its relevance to our spiritual growth today.

In this episode, Rabbi Ben Newman explores the Baal Shem Tov's insights on spiritual growth through a mystical lens. Reflecting on Parshat Noach, Rabbi Ben delves into how the Baal Shem Tov compares the spiritual journeys of Noah and Abraham, shedding light on their unique paths toward the Divine. Through stories and teachings, Rabbi Ben brings to life the Baal Shem Tov's metaphor of a parent guiding a child to walk, a beautiful analogy for how we strengthen our own spiritual resilience when moments of connection and distance arise. This episode offers listeners a chance to explore the rhythm of spiritual life, where closeness and distance both play essential roles in deepening our understanding and fostering a more vibrant inner journey.

I was delighted to lead a micro-mission to Israel with 4 of our congregants. The trip was designed to coincide with the ceremony in which my 21 year old son completed basic training and received his red paratrooper's beret from the IDF. With the many twists and turns of the ongoing war with Hamas, the ceremony was delayed by a week. The volunteering and solidarity mission healed small cracked fissures and filled my heart. So much so that I boarded the plane home on Monday knowing my son would be sufficiently supported with his brother Yoni by his side representing our family. I sent him this letter and he was fine that I share it with you. Each week, a member of the clergy offers their personal perspective on a topic of their choice, such as the week's Torah portion, a Jewish holiday, ritual, custom, or history. Today we will discuss two great stories about a great Rabbi, Rabbi Tzvi Pesach Frank , who was the C hief R abbi of Jerusalem in the 1940s and 50s . Both stories deal with the concept of being Mezakeh et HaRabim, which is the responsibility of an individual to sometimes pass up on his own potential levels of greatness, in order to merit the masses. In the first story, Rabbi Frank called for one of the shochets/slaughterers of Jerusalem , a week or so before Rosh Hashanah, and commanded him, based on the princip le that all Jews are responsible for each other, to go to Paris , France (at that time , there were no slaughter houses in Israel, the meat came from Europe ). Of the s hochets that ha d been in Paris was no longer able to be there , and they needed an immediate replacement , to ensure that they would be kosher meat to the proper standards for the holiday season. The man responded, “ How can I leave Yerushalayim during the month of Elul, during the time of selichot? I have been in Jerusalem my whole life I should go into the secular atmosphere of Paris? My prayers won't be the same. It's a gezera that I cannot withstand. Furthermore, this is a Mitzvah that actually comes through a sin, because my mother passed away and my father is alone. He comes to me for the holiday s . Now he will have nowhere to go. Therefore, as important as it is, I am not the person, and it cannot be now. If anything , I can go after the holidays. “ Rabbi Frank answered him, “ The Yetzer Hara gets involved in every Mitzvah , s aying, “ W hy me? Why now? But the Torah says that it's you, and it's now , and you have to go. As far as you r concern about where your father will stay for the holiday, he's invited to be my guest. And as far as your prayers, the Mitzvot, angels and defense attorneys that you will get from saving so many people from possibly not having the highest standard of Kashrut, I guarantee will be a zechut for you to have a great, wonderful year.“ And so it was that the man packed his bags and left not long after that. The s econd story is more relevant to Sephardi c Syrian J ewry, and especially that of Panama. What does R av Tzvi Pesach Frank have to do with Panama nian Jewry ? A group of community Jews from Panama once came to Porat Yosef. They requested a rabbi for their Syrian community, complaining that the y were very we ak in Kashrut an d Shabbat . They decided on choosing Rabbi Sion Levy, who was one of the best boys. He was an orphan, and he was a Gadol B ‘Torah. He was very strong and powerful . and they thought he would be the perfect man. The only problem was, he did not want to go. He said he would rather starve and have no Parnasa then go to Panama, a place where he couldn't raise his family properly. The community activist s went to the president of yeshiva , Rabbi Ben sion Uziel, to ask him for help in convincing the young man. Rabbi Uziel went to the chief rabbi of Jerusalem, Rabbi Tzvi Pesach Frank, and the chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Herzog, and called them together to his house. He then asked Rabbi Sion Levy to come , and told him, "This is a Bet Din and we are commanding you, with the power of a Bet Din, that you must go to Panama.” And he did. And the rest is history. They have the document he sign ed agreeing to go. Later on in time, many different communities came to Porat Yose f seeking rabbis for their communities . But the rabbis did not want to go , so a special proclamation was written and signed by many Sephardic rabbis ( Rabbi D ayan Rabbi Antebi , Rabbi Attieh, Rabbi Ades, Rabbi Raful, Hacham Ovadia Yosef Hacham Ovadia Hedaya and others). The one Ashkenazi Rabbi that signed was Rabbi Tzvi Pesach Frank. The proclamation said that the rabbis were required to leave Eretz Yisrael. It was worth it for them to give up their personal growth in order to impact the communities in the D iaspora. How unbelievable that a rabbi that is seemingly unknown to us, without any apparent impact , made a tremendous impact on our community. Who knows if Hacham Baruch would've ever come to our communit y without his psak ? My father learned with Hacham Baruch for two years. He was his student. Who knows the impact? We never know what the impact of Gedolim are, but it all comes from the ir Ahavat Yisrael, and their understanding of Kol Yisrael Arevim Ze LaZeh. It's not always about our own personal growth or how good it will be for us. Sometimes we have to ask how good it will be for the community at large? Have a wonderful day.

Rabbi Spratt spent his early years exploring his Jewish identity, journeying through the many worlds of Judaism before finding a home within the Reform movement, and in 2008, he was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary of America where he was the recipient of many awards and prizes. Currently, he is the beloved Senior Associate Rabbi of Congregation Rodeph Sholom and the Rabbi-in-Residence of Rodeph Sholom School. Rabbi Spratt has chosen Genesis 3:24 to discuss with Mark. He begins the discussion by sharing his Jewish journey, precisely what interests him about the Garden of Eden, and both the conventional reading of today’s passage as well as a more radical reading of it. He and Mark then explore the side of God that tests us, the significance of choosing knowledge over immortality, and Judaism’s perspective on living forever. Rabbi Spratt then describes his approach to supporting those who are dealing with death, and reveals what he feels is the path to knowledge, connection, and relationship, as well as the lessons he has learned about mankind. Today’s enlightening conversation offers you the opportunity to go beyond the conventional and expand your understanding of this magnificent text with two passionate and insightful seekers of biblical truth. Episode Highlights: Rabbi Spratt’s Jewish journey What interests Rabbi Ben about the Garden of Eden The conventional reading of this story A more radical reading of it The side of God that tests us The significance of choosing knowledge over immortality Judaism’s perspective on living forever Rabbi Spratt’s approach to supporting those dealing with death The path to knowledge, connection and relationship The lessons about mankind that Rabbi Ben has learned Quotes: “God expelling them from the Garden of Eden actually sets up the idea that the only aspect, perhaps, that distinguishes us from God is that we are mortal. And that I think is a very radical read.” “Maybe this is the very path of what Torah is all about - that part of what we’re called to do is to bring that innate curiosity, the inquisitive spirit that makes us want to plumb the depths…the divine aspect of us which is reaching for more and more knowledge.” “In the Jewish imagination…our origin story is one where we’re reaching actually for knowledge instead of immortality.” “You live forever through the deeds that you do in this chronologically finite life.” “I believe that we are all wired just to be boundary crossers…our heroes are always the boundary crossers.” “Our most fundamental need is connectedness.” Genesis 3:24 He drove the man out, and stationed east of the garden of Eden the cherubim and the fiery ever-turning sword, to guard the way to the tree of life. https://www.sefaria.org/Genesis.3.24?lang=bi&with=all&lang2=en Links: The Rabbi’s Husband homepage: http://therabbishusband.com/ Mark’s Twitter: https://twitter.com/markgerson?lang=en -

Shortly before 3 p.m. Monday, Mt. Laurel Rabbi Ben David, senior rabbi of Adath Emanu-El and an avid marathon runner, had just checked off his “lifelong dream” of competing in--and completing--the Boston Marathon. His official time of three hours, 21 minutes and 37 seconds--a personal best--put “the running rabbi” across the finish line as the 6,245th finisher. Then, as he approached his hotel near the marathon's finish line, the lifelong dream took a darker turn. Two bombs exploded on Boylston Street a few blocks apart, killing at least three people, including an eight-year-old boy, and severely injuring scores of race spectators. For David, it was a replay of the nightmare of September 11, 2001, which he witnessed firsthand from lower Manhattan. In this podcast, Jewish Community Voice correspondent Steve Lubetkin talks with Rabbi David about his experience at the marathon.
