Economy Interesting Development – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney Announces New Limits on Foreign Steel and Aluminum, With New 25% Tariff on Steel Derivative Components   Prime Minister Mark Carney is conceding defeat to President Trump and positioning the Canadian economy to be compliant with U.S-Mexico trade regulations. However, Carney is not saying that, indeed he cannot; he's spent over a year telling Canadians that President Trump's trade and economic demands are not going to be accepted by Canada.  However, what he is factually doing is exactly what President Trump has demanded. Prime Minister Carney is saying he is restricting Steel and Aluminum imports from non-free trade agreement countries, and he is lowering the tonnage of Steel and Aluminum that will be permitted for import.  His claim is that this approach will help drive up “domestic demand” for Canadian Steel and Aluminum, but that's ancillary to the real objective. President Trump has demanded Canada stop importing cheap steel and aluminum mostly from China; including manufactured component goods that are made with steel and aluminum (think autos).  Canada would not stop, because they could not stop.  Their manufacturing base, green energy and climate change economy, is more of a component assembly system now. So, President Trump hit Canada with a 35% tariff, and things got ugly.  In June Trump raised the tariff to 50%. The back and forth has gone on all year. Carney now announces restrictions on imported steel and aluminum, as well as restrictions on imported derivative goods that come from steel and aluminum, in combination with a spending plan to bolster the Canadian steel and aluminum manufacturing base.  This ends up shifting the Canadian industrial sector to making steel and aluminum products without Chinese import dependency. Little marmalade cakes These light and buttery cakes are perfect using up marmalade. Quick and easy the marmalade flavour is perfect incorporated into a cake. Makes 12 Ingredients: 170g butter, softened, plus more for greasing muffin tins 1 cup sugar 2 large eggs 2 cups plain flour 1 tbsp marmalade 1 cup milk stirred with 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp baking soda Topping ½ cup brown sugar ¼ cup marmalade 1 tbsp orange juice Method Preheat the oven to 180 C. Grease 12-hole muffin tin. Line each with small squares of baking paper. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time and continue beating until well-combined. Don't worry if it curdles. Sift in flour and add in marmalade and beat gently until just combined. In a cup combine milk and lemon juice and wait until is curdles – about 30 seconds. Stir in baking soda and add to cake batter. Mix until just combined. Fill each hole to two-thirds with the batter. Bake for 15-18 minutes until light brown and spring back to the touch. Over 20 years ago a major construction project was launched in Wellington to enhance the most popular local beaches. It involved the transport of more than 16,000 cubic metres of sand from Golden Bay in Wainui to three beaches in Oriental Bay in the capital. Mark Maddox returns to discuss a giant monster movie from Denmark! Yes – REPTILICUS (1961) is either the shame or pride of Danish cinema depending on who you ask. Much like THE GIANT CLAW (1957) it asks a lot of the audience whenever the titular creature is onscreen. For many fans of genre film, the willing suspension of disbelief is too heavy a lift even though the first act setup involves an intriguing premise. So what do Mark and I think of it? Hang on tight! We discuss the origin of the project and the various creators who brought this movie to the world. Sidney Pink and Ib Melchior get the biggest share of our attention as they were the writers and director of the project. We quote American International Pictures' Sam Arkoff about his discovery of the major mistake in the English dialog that had to be corrected by looping the entire film. The monster special effects go under the microscope with both of us relating the style and form to the Gerry Anderson TV shows that were gaining popularity in the early 1960's. The differences between the AIP English version and the version made for Danish consumption are touched on with special mention of the added musical number that drives Mark nearly insane. (Yes, I included it in the show.) Topping things off is my co-host's reoccurring Swedish Chef impression which is either cultural appropriation, an insulting caricature or a confused cry for help. Or all three. And this entire affair goes on for two hours!
