    Eckhardt Research Center to Foster Precision Science and Engineering

The new William Eckhardt Research Center at the University of Chicago will host a broad spectrum of 21st-century science, from investigation of the deepest cosmic mysteries to manipulations of matter on the scale of atoms and molecules. The building is a collaboration between HOK, an architecture firm with a prolific track record designing science and technology buildings, and James Carpenter, an artist, sculptor, and architect known for his innovative work with light and glass. In this video, UChicago scholars Angela Olinto, David Awschalom, Andreas Seifahrt, and Jacob Bean discuss the research possibilities of the new building.

The Joe and Rika Mansueto Library at the University of Chicago houses cutting-edge facilities for preservation and digitization of physical books, as well as a high-density underground storage system with the capacity to hold 3.5 million volume equivalents. With its soaring elliptical dome and prime location on campus, the Mansueto Library's Grand Reading Room, which opened on May 16, 2011, provides an inviting space for rigorous scholarship in an array of fields.

Since his adoption in 2010, Quasimodo "Modo" Rockefeller has become a beloved figure on the University of Chicago campus—and on Facebook, where he entertains his more than 600 friends with regular updates. The black-and-white cat roams freely throughout the chapel and greets its many visitors. Elizabeth Davenport, dean of Rockefeller Chapel, says Modo is a fitting addition to the historic building. "Every great cathedral has always had its cat," she says.

The internationally renowned firms Studio Gang Architects and Mortenson Construction are collaborating to build a new residence hall and dining commons on the north end of campus. This facility is tailored to the College’s distinctive House system, with an emphasis on building communities of learning. It creates a graceful new entrance into campus from the north, connecting the University to the broader neighborhood. Jeanne Gang, FAIA, principal and founder of Studio Gang Architects, unveiled conceptual designs and answered questions.
