This week on Inspire Change, Gunter discusses what is consciousness, and how does it shape the inner lives of men?In this episode of Inspire Change with Gunter, Gunter explores the complex nature of consciousness and its profound influence on self-awareness, emotional experience, and personal growth. Drawing from psychology, neuroscience, and decades of therapeutic experience, he examines how consciousness shapes men's inner worlds — and why understanding it is essential for healing, emotional intelligence, and authentic connection. Rather than treating consciousness as an abstract concept, Gunter breaks it down into practical components that listeners can explore in their own lives. He explains how internalized voices, social conditioning, and relational environments influence self-perception and vulnerability, and how greater awareness can lead to healthier emotional expression and deeper personal insight. This conversation offers practical questions and reflective tools designed to help listeners better understand their mental states, emotional patterns, and self-model — opening pathways toward growth, resilience, and meaningful change.Key Themes & Discussion PointsThe Nature of ConsciousnessWhy consciousness remains one of psychology's most complex and “stubborn” questionsExploring whether we are mechanical beings or living organisms with rich inner worldsThe Three Components of ConsciousnessGunter outlines three interacting elements:State — the current mental and emotional conditionContent — thoughts, feelings, and sensory experienceSelf-model — how we perceive and define ourselvesInternalized Voices & Self-PerceptionHow introjected voices shape identity and self-awarenessThe influence of early authority figures and cultural messagingHow internal narratives shape emotional regulation and behaviorSocial Environment & Emotional ExpressionThe role of mirror neurons and relational dynamicsHow social environments influence vulnerability and connectionWhy men often experience emotional restriction in relational spacesConsciousness & MasculinityCultural conditioning and its impact on men's emotional accessHow masculinity norms influence vulnerability and self-expressionThe relationship between consciousness, emotional intelligence, and personal growthPractical Reflection QuestionsGunter offers guiding questions to deepen awareness:State• What is my current mental and emotional state?• Am I calm, tense, distracted, or overwhelmed?Content• What thoughts and emotions are present right now?• Are they grounded in reality or shaped by past experience?Self-Model• How do I see myself in this moment?• Is this perception compassionate, critical, or inherited? These questions help cultivate self-awareness and create space for intentional change.Memorable Sound Bites“Are we machines or living beings with inner worlds?”“Consciousness is three things working together.”“Internalized voices shape your self-model.”

Empress Myeongseong (Queen Min), born Min Ja-yeong in 1851, was the child bride of the young King Gojong of Korea. This was during the Joseon isolationist era, overseen by her father-in-law, the conservative regent Heungseon Daewongun. As foreign powers pressured the "Hermit Kingdom," a 1870s coup to sideline the regent lead to an era of modernization. Japan's 1895 victory in the First Sino-Japanese War ended Chinese influence, and Queen Min's secret appeals to Russia for aid provoked Tokyo. On October 8, 1895, Japanese Minister Miura Gorō orchestrated her assassination, unleashing a process that would lead to Japan annexing Korea in 1910. Korean nationalist lore casts Queen Min as a heroic modernizer and defender against imperialism. But many scholars highlight the virtual inevitability of the peninsula's subordination to one foreign power or another, her factionalism, and risky foreign intrigues. Her brutal murder nevertheless forged an enduring legend of resistance. To find out more about the people and music featured in today's episode, visit the Assassinations Podcast website, www.AssassinationsPodcast.com While there, you can check out our Bookstore, where we recommend some great episode-related books and reading material, or shop our Merch Store to nab a logo tee or tote bag. John Sayles' new novel 'Crucible' is a sweeping historical epic that takes readers deep into the world of Henry Ford and the Motor City between 1927 and 1945. Sayles casts his net wide across this transformative era, capturing the rise and fall of industrial fortunes, the bitter struggles of workers and union organizers, and the cultural collisions of race, class, and power in America's heartbeat.

This week on Inspire Change, Gunter opens the conversation on whether human beings are fundamentally decent — and why that decency can become inaccessible in the moments that matter most.Drawing from contemporary social thought and decades of clinical experience, Gunter challenges the cultural addiction to cynicism and the masculine posture that equates hardness with maturity. While many systems assume people are selfish or brutal under pressure, Gunter suggests the deeper issue is not a lack of conscience, but restricted access to empathy, tenderness, and connection. He explores how men are often shaped by an internal moral code that links worth to competence, control, and self-sufficiency — a code enforced through shame and status defense. In this emotional operating system, vulnerability can feel like loss of rank, and softness like existential risk. As a result, decency may be present but hidden behind armor. This episode examines how these internal rules play out in conflict, intimacy, fatherhood, grief, and therapy — and why psychotherapy remains one of the few spaces where masculinity can be experienced without shame and connection can replace performance.Gunter also warns that moral ambition without vulnerability can become another form of defended performance. True change, he argues, begins with restoring access to vulnerability and relational accountability so that contribution becomes service rather than status. He offers three practical bridges for restoring access to decency:• Name the internal rule driving defensiveness• Practice small acts of shame tolerance through honest vulnerability• Make decency concrete through repair, accountability, and action under pressureIf humans are decent, the real question becomes: why do so many men struggle to show it when it matters most? The answer is not that men are bad — but that many have been trained to protect rank and competence at the expense of connection. This episode invites listeners to move decency from belief to behavior — breath by breath, repair by repair.GratitudeHello to all our listeners, we thank you for tuning in and promoting positive social change. This makes you a part of Gunter's efforts in transforming not only men's lives but lives in general and we are grateful you have joined us. The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 6th and final study session on Char Adams' Black-Owned: The Revolutionary Life of the Black Bookstore. Published at the end of 2025, Adams' new book made a number of lists for top books of the year. Touted as an "award-winning journalist, editor, and storyteller for NBC News, known for her work on race, identity, and inequitable systems," Adams is a lovely black female, Victim of Racism. Specifically, Adams investigates how black people have responded to the System of White Supremacy through the lens of bookstore ownership. C.O.W.S.'s listeners should know that White Supremacists have invested immense time and energy to ensure that black people do not read or have access to books. Last week, we learned about how the 2000's signaled massive challenges for black bookstores with more competition from online and large bookstore chains. Then, the financial downturn of 2008 devastated many White and non-white bookstore owners. Karibu Books and Eso Won Books both eventually closed. But, the Sankofa Video Books & Café was able to fight off their $30,000 tax debt, and remains in business today. Adams says that many black bookstore saw a boon during the Racial protests of 2010s - such the police shootings of Michael Brown Jr., Eric Garner, & Rekia Boyd as well as the 2012 murder of Trayvon Martin. This book concludes with a massive emphasis on Anti-Sex/LGBTQ activities. RuPaul and George M. Johnson's 'All Boys Aren't Blue,' - which is a so-called manifesto about being a "queer" black person, are celebrated. Adams documents some of the responses to the murders of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery, which included a rash of buying books related to Racism and new book clubs. Interestingly, all of the new reading groups mentioned were formed by and for black females. Listeners and Gus question if this book, though filled with very important information, earns an 'F' letter grade for omitting Dr. Frances Cress Welsing and Neely Fuller Jr. and then glazing readers with Anti-Sex in the conclusion. #COINTELPRO #TheCOWS17Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE 564943#

Between The Covers : Conversations with Writers in Fiction, Nonfiction & Poetry
Canisia Lubrin returns to Between the Covers for a live conversation in downtown Portland, at Powell’s Bookstore, about her latest poetry collection The World After Rain. A private book, that Canisia never intended to publish, we explore what it means to write elegy beyond personal biography, what it means that “metaphors unmake the too-made,” what it means to write against the literal, with a folk sensibility and consciousness, and much more. How does elegy relate, formally and aesthetically, to water? What is the utility of poetry, its effect in the world? How can autobiography be a way to move beyond the self? Join Canisia for a deep exploration of these animating questions in her latest work. The first time Canisia was one the show, to discuss her book Code Noir, her contribution to the bonus audio archive was a reading of as-of-yet-unpublished works by Christina Sharpe and Dionne Brand, and a soundscape she stitched together from six years of touring, from Canada to Europe to the Caribbean. This joins an immense and ever-growing archive of supplemental material and is only one of many possible things to choose from when you join the Between the Covers community as a listener-supporter. You can find out more at the show’s Patreon page. Finally, here is the BookShop for today.

This week on Inspire Change, Gunter discusses resentment. Resentment is one of the most misunderstood and quietly destructive emotional experiences we carry. In this solo episode of Inspire Change with Gunter, Gunter explores resentment not as explosive anger, but as a slow, chronic emotional accumulation that can shape identity, distort perception, and quietly erode relationships and personal well-being.Through psychological insight, clinical observation, and deeply reflective guidance, Gunter breaks down how resentment forms, why it persists, and how it manifests mentally, emotionally, behaviorally, and even physically in the body. Most importantly, he offers a structured, compassionate roadmap for transforming resentment into clarity, agency, and emotional freedom. This episode invites listeners to examine where unresolved wounds may still be influencing their present lives — and how releasing resentment can become a powerful act of self-liberation.Key Themes & Discussion PointsUnderstanding Resentment Beyond AngerResentment as chronic, unresolved emotional buildupHow resentment often disguises itself as moral righteousness or principleThe connection between resentment and unexpressed truths, unmet needs, and unspoken boundariesThe Three Structural Components of ResentmentPerceived Injury – When expectations, trust, or fairness feel violatedInhibited Expression – When emotions cannot be safely or openly communicatedMoral Accounting – The internal ledger that tracks perceived imbalance in relationshipsHow Resentment Shapes Our Inner WorldThe mind's tendency to replay and reinforce grievance narrativesPolarization of perception that reduces people to their mistakesThe illusion of strength resentment can provide while quietly draining emotional resilienceBehavioral and Relational ManifestationsPassive resistance, sarcasm, withdrawal, and communication breakdownOver-functioning and people-pleasing patterns that create hidden emotional debtScorekeeping in relationships and how it erodes intimacy and connectionThe Physical and Somatic Impact of ResentmentChronic tension and stress responses stored in the bodyEmotional states that influence sleep, mood, and nervous system regulationUsing bodily awareness as an early indicator of unresolved resentmentThe Deeper Psychological and Existential EffectsHow resentment can distort worldview and identityThe role resentment plays in avoiding vulnerability, grief, and personal accountabilityWhy resentment can paradoxically maintain dysfunctional relationshipsMemorable Episode Insights“Resentment is anger that has nowhere to go, combined with the story that it shouldn't have happened."“Resentment is often a protest against helplessness — the psyche saying this mattered.”“Resentment is the guard dog at the gate of grief.”“When you track love like a spreadsheet, intimacy goes bankrupt.”“Letting go of resentment isn't about excusing the past — it's about releasing internal captivity.”Why This Conversation MattersResentment is one of the most common yet unspoken emotional burdens people carry. Left unaddressed, it can limit joy, restrict vulnerability, and shape how individuals relate to themselves and others. This episode encourages listeners to approach emotional healing with precision, accountability, and compassion, creating space for deeper connection, authenticity, and personal transformation.GratitudeHello to all our listeners, we thank you for tuning in and promoting positive social change. The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 5th study session on Char Adams' Black-Owned: The Revolutionary Life of the Black Bookstore. Published at the end of 2025, Adams' new book made a number of lists for top books of the year. Touted as an "award-winning journalist, editor, and storyteller for NBC News, known for her work on race, identity, and inequitable systems," Adams is a lovely black female, Victim of Racism. This may be the first to seriously investigate the history of bookstores operated by people classified as black in the area of the world known as the US. Specifically, Adams investigates how black people have responded to the System of White Supremacy through the lens of bookstores ownership. C.O.W.S. listeners should know that White Supremacists have invested immense time and energy to ensure that black people do not read or have access to books. Last week, we learned about Eso Won Books in Los Angeles and Karibu Books in Maryland. Adams explained the lull in black bookstores following the 1970's and the end of the so-called Civil Rights Era. Fictional romance novels, the Oprah Winfrey Book Club, and a new generation of mostly black female authors such as Terry McMillan, Sister Souljah, bell hooks, Iyanla Vanzant, Dr. Shahrazad Ali, and E. Lynn Harris (black dude), sparked a resurgence of black literature at the close of the 20th century. Most of these books minimized focus on the System of White Supremacy and instead centered on sexual activity and "gender wars." Gus T. and listeners find it increasingly suspicious that Dr. Frances Cress Welsing and Neely Fuller Jr. are both excluded from this book, even though they each made countless appearances at many of the black bookstores mentioned by Adams. #COINTELPRO #TheCOWS17Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE 564943#

C.O.W.S. listeners should know that White Supremacists have invested immense time and energy to ensure that black people do not read or have access to books. So, black bookstores must be heavily targeted places. Last week, we discussed the Tree of Life Bookstore in Harlem and the Hue-Man Experience Bookstore in Denver. A central theme of this text is that black bookstore operators were motivated to provide books for black children. Importantly, last week Adams told us that a significant pattern is that black females often read fictional romance novels - like Terry McMillan's Waiting To Exhale, while black males mostly read non-fiction works of history. Gus notes that many of the fictional novels most popular with black females often omit the System of White Supremacy while highlighting black males as feverish, misogynistic ogres. #COINTELPRO #TheCOWS16Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE 564943#

Listed as an "award-winning journalist, editor, and storyteller for NBC News, known for her work on race, identity, and inequitable systems," Adams is a lovely black female, Victim of Racism. C.O.W.S. listeners should know that White Supremacists have invested immense time and energy to ensure that black people do not read or have access to books. So, black bookstores must be heavily targeted places. Last week, we learned about the demise of Drum & Spear Bookstore in Washington, D.C. and Martin Sostre's now defunct Afro Asian Book Shop in Buffalo's Eastside. This shop was located on Jefferson Avenue less than 800 feet from the future TOPS Market where 10 black people would be killed in a 2022 White Terrorist attack. Adams also details Liberation Bookstore in Harlem, Hakim's Book's in Philadelphia, and Vaughn's Book Store in Detroit. All of these locations were assumed to be hubs of black "extremism" and subject to FBI surveillance and Racist thuggery. #COINTELPRO #TheCOWS16Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE 564943#
Send us a textIn this episode, I chat with Lovestruck Books owner and founder, Rachel Kantor. Rachel traces the thread from her years in classrooms and nonprofits to the moment she opened a shop that treats joy and access as serious cultural work. We dig into what it means to put the world's best-selling fiction genre at the center of an academic neighborhood and how that choice reshapes conversations about taste, representation, and who gets shelf space.Rachel shares the tightrope walk between mission and margin, revealing how a cafe and wine bar aren't add-ons but engines of community: inviting readers to linger, meet, and return. We explore the store's 75% romance focus alongside kids' books, general fiction, and targeted nonfiction—from memoir to sexual health and wellness—plus a slate of events that range from bestselling rom-com authors to a sold-out pelvic floor workshop and visits from award-shortlisted historians. The mix is intentional, reflecting a wide and lively demographic: students, professors, longtime locals, tourists, and readers across the gender and orientation spectrum.Representation sits at the center. We talk about the ongoing rise of queer love stories, poly relationships, Indigenous and BIPOC authors, and why fighting book bans and expanding access matter for a healthier literary ecosystem. Rachel offers gateway picks for skeptics, like Alice Hoffman's Practical Magic, alongside current obsessions in sports romance and romantasy, and she explains how recognition, like a member-voted Best Bookstore award, signals that community is choosing this model of joyful, inclusive culture. Join us to rethink what a bookstore can be, and to leave with a stronger, more curious TBR.If this conversation sparked a new read or reminded you why you love indie bookshops, tap follow, share it with a friend, and leave a quick review—your support helps more listeners find the show.Support the showThe Bookshop PodcastMandy Jackson-BeverlySocial Media Links
