Today, we're putting The Tonearm's needle on Toronto saxophonist Patrick Smith.Patrick has become a key player in the city's creative music scene. His new album, Words Underlined, came out in December on Lit Soc Records. It's the first release from the new label started by Sellers & Newell, a Toronto bookstore that moonlights as a music venue. Patrick recorded there with guitarist Dan Pitt and drummer Lowell Whitty. The trio plays without a bass, and the album alternates between composed pieces and full improvisations.A few episodes back, we featured a talk with Noah Franche-Nolan, who also collaborated with Dan Pitt. Empress Myeongseong (Queen Min), born Min Ja-yeong in 1851, was the child bride of the young King Gojong of Korea. This was during the Joseon isolationist era, overseen by her father-in-law, the conservative regent Heungseon Daewongun. As foreign powers pressured the "Hermit Kingdom," a 1870s coup to sideline the regent lead to an era of modernization. Japan's 1895 victory in the First Sino-Japanese War ended Chinese influence, and Queen Min's secret appeals to Russia for aid provoked Tokyo. On October 8, 1895, Japanese Minister Miura Gorō orchestrated her assassination, unleashing a process that would lead to Japan annexing Korea in 1910. Korean nationalist lore casts Queen Min as a heroic modernizer and defender against imperialism. But many scholars highlight the virtual inevitability of the peninsula's subordination to one foreign power or another, her factionalism, and risky foreign intrigues. This week on Inspire Change, Gunter opens the conversation on whether human beings are fundamentally decent — and why that decency can become inaccessible in the moments that matter most.Drawing from contemporary social thought and decades of clinical experience, Gunter challenges the cultural addiction to cynicism and the masculine posture that equates hardness with maturity. While many systems assume people are selfish or brutal under pressure, Gunter suggests the deeper issue is not a lack of conscience, but restricted access to empathy, tenderness, and connection.He explores how men are often shaped by an internal moral code that links worth to competence, control, and self-sufficiency — a code enforced through shame and status defense. In this emotional operating system, vulnerability can feel like loss of rank, and softness like existential risk. As a result, decency may be present but hidden behind armor.This episode examines how these internal rules play out in conflict, intimacy, fatherhood, grief, and therapy — and why psychotherapy remains one of the few spaces where masculinity can be experienced without shame and connection can replace performance.Gunter also warns that moral ambition without vulnerability can become another form of defended performance. The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 6th and final study session on Char Adams' Black-Owned: The Revolutionary Life of the Black Bookstore. Published at the end of 2025, Adams' new book made a number of lists for top books of the year. Touted as an "award-winning journalist, editor, and storyteller for NBC News, known for her work on race, identity, and inequitable systems," Adams is a lovely black female, Victim of Racism. Specifically, Adams investigates how black people have responded to the System of White Supremacy through the lens of bookstore ownership. C.O.W.S.'s listeners should know that White Supremacists have invested immense time and energy to ensure that black people do not read or have access to books. Last week, we learned about how the 2000's signaled massive challenges for black bookstores with more competition from online and large bookstore chains. Then, the financial downturn of 2008 devastated many White and non-white bookstore owners. Karibu Books and Eso Won Books both eventually closed. But, the Sankofa Video Books & Café was able to fight off their $30,000 tax debt, and remains in business today. Adams says that many black bookstore saw a boon during the Racial protests of 2010s - such the police shootings of Michael Brown Jr., Eric Garner, & Rekia Boyd as well as the 2012 murder of Trayvon Martin. This book concludes with a massive emphasis on Anti-Sex/LGBTQ activities. RuPaul and George M. Johnson's 'All Boys Aren't Blue,' - which is a so-called manifesto about being a "queer" black person, are celebrated. Adams documents some of the responses to the murders of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery, which included a rash of buying books related to Racism and new book clubs. Interestingly, all of the new reading groups mentioned were formed by and for black females. The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 4th study session on Char Adams' Black-Owned: The Revolutionary Life of the Black Bookstore. Published at the end of 2025, Adams' new book made a number of lists for top books of the year. Touted as an "award-winning journalist, editor, and storyteller for NBC News, known for her work on race, identity, and inequitable systems," Adams is a lovely black female, Victim of Racism. This may be the first to seriously investigate the history of bookstores operated by people classified as black in the area of the world known as the US. Specifically, Adams investigates how black people have responded to the System of White Supremacy through the lens of bookstores ownership. C.O.W.S. listeners should know that White Supremacists have invested immense time and energy to ensure that black people do not read or have access to books. So, black bookstores must be heavily targeted places. Last week, we discussed the Tree of Life Bookstore in Harlem and the Hue-Man Experience Bookstore in Denver. A central theme of this text is that black bookstore operators were motivated to provide books for black children. Importantly, last week Adams told us that a significant pattern is that black females often read fictional romance novels - like Terry McMillan's Waiting To Exhale, while black males mostly read non-fiction works of history.
