I've never shared this on the podcast before, but it's long overdue. I work with so many small business owners who've been burned by consultants and coaches—promised the world and left with disappointment. And honestly? It fires me up. No consultant should ever take advantage of a client's trust, especially when that client is trying to grow something meaningful. As business owners, we often hire help when we're stretched thin or searching for answers. We want to believe someone can step in and deliver results. But how do you know if you're hiring the right person? In this episode, I'm breaking down exactly what you should expect when working with a consultant: The red flags to watch for What a healthy consultant-client relationship looks like And how to track real progress once they're on board If you've ever hired a consultant—or you're thinking about it—this episode will give you the clarity you need to make smart, confident decisions. In this episode, we jump to our second campaign, a Call of Cthulhu based campaign called Lore for the Pages. In this episode, our heroes inherit both a bookstore and a home from KH Hillman, a bookseller who for years has been selling Cthulhu Mythos and occult books and objets d'arts by mail to unscrupulous buyers. Now, our heroes have to reclaim these lost objects before they are used to cause more problems. The first adventure is set in the fictional town of Sargasso Springs Alabama, a coastal town that is suffering from a strange infestation of bugs and some unusually cold weather. Our heroes get notified of their inheritance and begin the investigation of their new home while realizing neither the weather or the bugs are natural. As they dig deeper they begin to realize their new home maybe won't last long. Check it out!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/family-plot--4670465/support.

I sat down with Helene Stapinski, author of "Five Finger Discount, A Crooked Family History" at Word Booksellers, 123 Newark Avenue in downtown Jersey City on 12/8/2014. The book chronicles her experiences with her family growing up in a gritty Jersey City in the early 1970's as well as the political corruption over the years and lots of other history. **It's now 2025, more than 10 years later, and there is some spooky "Foreshadowing" in this interview. I had a blast sitting down with Helene for this one! I will be doing another intereview at Word Bookseller new location in October (more info very soon). Word is now at 29 McWilliams Place in Jersey City. Check out all of Helen's work here: https://helenestapinski.com/
Paul calls us to follow him to a life of service to the Lord Jesus Christ, a life that may, or may not, include hunger, thirst, nakedness, beatings and/or homelessness. How's that for an invitation to the Christian life? You can also add being reviled, persecution and defamation to the list as well. This is what real Christianity is, and if you're saved, it's what you are called to, like it or not. This Sunday Service message was preached live at the Bible Believers Church at the Bookstore in Palatka, Florida.“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” Colossians 3:1-3 (KJB)

Send us a textStep into Philadelphia's only Spanish-English bookstore, where literature becomes a powerful bridge connecting communities and celebrating cultural heritage. The Julia de Burgos Bookstore, named after Puerto Rico's most celebrated poet, offers more than just books—it provides a sanctuary where Puerto Rican and Latinx voices take center stage.Lisa Moser, the bookstore's passionate manager, shares her journey from language enthusiast to literary curator. With a background in Spanish and theology, Lisa discovered what she calls "the dream job I didn't know existed" at Taller Puertorriqueño, a 50-year-old cultural center where the bookstore resides. This non-profit organization serves as a vibrant hub for Puerto Rican culture through after-school programs, art exhibitions, community events, and its unique bookstore. The emotional impact of representation resonates throughout our conversation. Lisa recounts how visitors sometimes tear up upon entering a space where every book reflects Puerto Rican or Latinx authorship—"these are the books I wish I had when I was a kid," one visitor shared. This poignant reaction underscores why children's books are their bestsellers, as parents seek to affirm their children's cultural identity from an early age.Beyond the carefully curated book selection focusing on BIPOC, queer, and women writers, the store showcases handcrafted items from local artists and Puerto Rican artisans. These exclusive partnerships make them one of the only U.S. locations selling certain Puerto Rican-made goods. Every purchase supports Taller Puertorriqueño's community programs, creating a virtuous cycle of cultural preservation and education.Philadelphia has the second-largest Puerto Rican population in the United States, giving the bookstore deep community roots. The bookstore collaborates with nearby schools (including one named after Julia de Burgos), hosts bilingual storytimes, and offers cultural tours. Lisa finds particular joy in making personalized recommendations, connecting visitors with books that reflect their unique experiences and interests.Discover how this literary haven honors Julia de Burgos' legacy of anti-colonialism, feminism, and cultural pride while building bridges between languages, generations, and communities. Howdy Bookshelvers It's been a long time coming but we're back for a full on book review show (insert fanfare here). Nat and Steve delve into the expertly written and wonderfully cathartic the book "Old Dog, New Dog" by Kathy Callahan and Helen St. Pierre. The book looks at the joys, challenges and intricacies of our older and younger dogs and goes a long way to answering that old age question: Should we get a puppy as a companion for our older dog? As well as the usual deep dive sections we get to interview Kathy & Helen and discuss the importance of fostering a harmonious relationship between the old and the young, along with discovering how to promote a peaceful coexistence, and prepare and live through the emotional journey of caring for dogs at different life stages. Whether you're a seasoned dog owner or a new puppy parent, we hope this episode offers valuable guidance and heartfelt stories that resonate with every dog lover. On top of all that lovely stuff, Nat and Steve discuss dog centred horror movies, how to be mindful (or in Steve's case how to be mindful about not being mindful) and Nat's act of resistance. It's all go gang… but all bloomin'great! Links:Buy Old Dog, New DogDOGx TicketsLink to our Bookstore

A pioneering Palestinian-American journalist whose reporting for Al Jazeera over 25 years gave global audiences a human perspective on life under Israeli occupation, Shireen Abu Akleh was known as “the voice of Palestine.” On May 11, 2022, while covering an Israeli military raid in Jenin, she was fatally shot despite wearing clearly marked press gear. Multiple investigations — by the UN, CNN, The Washington Post, and others — concluded that Israeli forces were responsible, contradicting initial Israeli claims. Independent groups argued she was deliberately targeted, though Israel maintains it was accidental and has refused to take accountability or cooperate with international investigations. Her killing was widely condemned as an attack on press freedom and a possible war crime, and her legacy endures as a symbol of Palestinian resilience and unflinching journalism in the face of military occupation. To find out more about the people and music featured in today's episode, visit the Assassinations Podcast website, www.AssassinationsPodcast.com While there, you can check out our Bookstore, where we recommend some great episode-related books and reading material, or shop our Merch Store to nab a logo tee or tote bag. I struggled for a long time about whether or not to share this story with you because I felt like it was a story that was not very common and therefore not very applicable. But then I realized this story is very common. If you peel back the layers a bit here, you realize that the first step was the thoughts in the mind of one or more of the employees. They were disgruntled for whatever reason and allowed those thoughts to fester. That's right, folks. This is the last episode of "John Updike's Ghost"! But not to worry! We'll be launching a new podcast very soon! What's the name? What will it be about? When will it launch? We're not telling you yet! Until that amazing day comes, you'll just have to listen to us talk about the books we've read recently, such as: - "Sisters in the Wind," by Angeline Boulley, which is in the same universe as "Firekeeper's Daughter" and "Warrior Girl Unearthed," and it is just as good. Angeline just keeps cranking them out. - "The Guide," by Peter Heller, which is the follow-on to "The River," and features much of the same brilliant nature writing, if maybe a little less "realistic." It's not as good as "The River," but that's not saying it's not great. - "The Frozen People," by Elly Griffiths, which starts a brand-new series and has time travel, but not the sci-fi sort of time travel, just the plot-device kind of time travel. If you like Elly's mysteries, you'll love this. - "So Far Gone," by Jess Walter, which is very much a novel of our moment, exploring what happens when your daughter marries a hardcore Christian nationalist. But it's also really funny and not too politically heavy. - "Help Wanted," by Adelle Waldman, which is a working-class novel about employees in a box-store warehouse and the pecking order that becomes clear when the boss announces he's leaving. Hannah liked it. And then we thank everyone and say goodbye. We'll be back, but ta-ta for now.

My message today is on the biblical commandment for born again believers in the end times to be LOOKING for the Lord, WAITING for the Lord, and WORKING right up to the moment when He shall, and will, appear unto us. These are not "high-level concepts of Christianity", but rather the doctrinal marching orders given to us by the apostle Paul. Live Sunday Service starts 11:00 AM in the Bookstore, come join us!“Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession; That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:” 1 Timothy 6:12-14 (KJB)

Hey, Hey, Hey Bookshelvers! This week we have another DOGx Special for you. We also have been graced with the presence of, the one and only, Jason Light as this topic is very close to his heart. Every year we have a charity slot at DOGx and this year we've managed to get the wonderful Guide Dogs to do a presentation and demo for us. With that in mind we thought it would be wonderful to have Elli Cavazza, a puppy development advisor for Guide Dogs and Mandy Pike, a guide dog user with her dog, Loney on to talk all things Guide Dogs from both perspectives. The discussion provides a fascinating peek into the world of Guide Dogs, going beyond the public-facing image to explore the detailed, dog-centred approach to training. We find out about Elli's role, which involves training puppy-raisers and ensuring puppies are well-socialized and prepared for their future, as well as Guide Dogs passionate views on their dog-centric and human-centric approach working in unison. We then get Mandy's perspective as a guide dog partner. She shares her journey, from her initial hesitation as a self-proclaimed "cat person" to her profound bond with her current dog, Lonnie. Mandy openly discusses the challenges and triumphs of working with a dog that is a "work in progress," highlighting the importance of trust, communication, and understanding Loney as an individual first and a guide dog second. There are also some real valuable insights from both Ellie and Mandy for the general public. Enjoy! Links:Find out more about Guide DogsDOGx TicketsLink to our Bookstore

Is it a genius strategy or just a gimmick? The hosts unpack what this means for Gen Z consumers, the future of retail touchpoints, and how innovation from brands like LumiNicole is paving the way for beauty in high-traffic spaces like airports, hotels, and bookstores. Plus, Kendra and Leslie share personal parenting wins and candid insights into building models where everybody wins. Tune in to hear why the future of beauty isn't just about what you sell—it's about where you sell it.
All through the Bible, we read about 2 brides, one Gentile and one Jewish. A bride for the Father, Jewish, and a bride for the Son, Gentile. We see such an example in the book of Esther with Vashti and Esther. We see it in the marriages of both Leah and Rachel to Jacob. Both these brides reach their ultimate fulfillment with Christians in the Body of Christ at the Rapture, and Jews in the nation of Israel at the Second Coming. Preached live this morning at the Bible Believers Church at the Bookstore in Palatka, Florida

This week's Book Picks comes from Kira Wizner from Merritt Bookstore in Millbrook, NY and Lily Bartels from Open Door Bookstore in Schenectady, NY.
So many of us have not only one copy of the Bible, but several, with some of those often doing little more than collecting dust. We go to church and most everyone has a copy or one is available. Bookstores regularly have them as well. We take this for granted yet in other parts of the world, many people long to have their own copy of the Scriptures. In such places, sometimes their pastor doesn't even have a copy! Jason Woolford is out to change that. He returned to Crosstalk to reacquaint listeners with information about Mission Cry where he's president. It all began about 70 years ago when a junk dealer found a Bible in the garbage and didn't want to throw it out. He kept collecting used Bibles and before long he had a box full which he sent to India. All these years later, Mission Cry has sent nearly 500 million dollars worth of donated Bibles and Christian books to over 180 nations around the world. You may be wondering what good could possibly come from sending used English Bibles to a foreign nation? What things can you do in order to obtain used Bibles to send to Mission Cry? Can you hold a Bible drive at your church? Are there testimonies that show the effectiveness of this ministry? These and other questions are answered on this exciting program, showing how you can be a world missionary without even leaving your area!
In Episode 203, Gayle Weiswasser, co-founder of Wonderland Books, an independent bookstore in Bethesda, Maryland, returns to the podcast with Sarah for a one-year check-in on the shop's journey. How the store's first year compared to their original projections and expectations. The now-dispelled fears Gayle had before opening. Why she's glad they curated every book in their inventory themselves, and why they still do all the book buying in-house. The course correction Wonderland had to make in their romance section. The biggest mistake they made before opening their doors. Which genres and titles have become customer favorites and which don't seem to sell well. How they plan and host book events — and why those events are such a key part of the store's community success. The books that taught them exactly how (and how not) to decide how many copies to order. The surprising punch poetry has packed with customers. Whether Gayle's own reading life has bounced back after the pre-opening stress and time crunch.
