The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 4th study session on Char Adams' Black-Owned: The Revolutionary Life of the Black Bookstore. Published at the end of 2025, Adams' new book made a number of lists for top books of the year. Touted as an "award-winning journalist, editor, and storyteller for NBC News, known for her work on race, identity, and inequitable systems," Adams is a lovely black female, Victim of Racism. This may be the first to seriously investigate the history of bookstores operated by people classified as black in the area of the world known as the US. Specifically, Adams investigates how black people have responded to the System of White Supremacy through the lens of bookstores ownership. C.O.W.S. listeners should know that White Supremacists have invested immense time and energy to ensure that black people do not read or have access to books. So, black bookstores must be heavily targeted places. Last week, we discussed the Tree of Life Bookstore in Harlem and the Hue-Man Experience Bookstore in Denver. A central theme of this text is that black bookstore operators were motivated to provide books for black children. Importantly, last week Adams told us that a significant pattern is that black females often read fictional romance novels - like Terry McMillan's Waiting To Exhale, while black males mostly read non-fiction works of history. I attended Chad Thompson's talk at the SOVA Rise Entrepreneur Summit last October about business planning, I didn't tell him this, but it wasn't a talk that I thought really pertained to me, since I didn't really have a business to market so to speak; something drew me to it- and I'm so glad I listened to that! Chad mentioned something about the business plan that I had never heard or even thought about before, and honestly I didn't hear much after that. I've been guilty of thinking the business plan was lame. I felt like he was speaking directly to me; I didn't quite know how I'd pitch him to be my podcast guest, or how the conversation would actually go, but I did, and he said yes. And I'm so very glad it all worked out (I took a couple of weeks to actually email him, and my email ended up in his spam), because this conversation with Chad just felt beautiful.Chad and his wife own The Book Cellar, a used book store in Abingdon, VA - their mission is to make literacy affordable, and they wanted to do things differently, and it has worked very well! My soul thrills whenever I think about the coming Pretribulation Rapture of the Church, and what a glorious moment that shall be. But when I think about what life will be like for those left behind, it becomes heartbreaking to contemplate. Imagine people's very souls drying up because there won't be any nourishment from the Bible to feed them, and worse, there won't even be the chance that they will somehow “figure it out”. As the chain continues to see growth since its change in leadership in 2019, some are concerned about the return of the big-box bookstore where small, independent bookstores already exist.
