How long do you think your attention span is? A lot has been written about the attention spans of people, and there's debate about whether attention spans are getting shorter or not. Well, if it's true that we have short attention spans, and if they are potentially getting even shorter, there's a really important invitation in the Bible that we're going to struggle with. It's an invitation that shows up 1000 times--the invitation “to behold.” What does it mean to "behold", and why is "beholding" so important? Explore that with the group in this study called Behold. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children. Matthew 14:19-21 With Jesus There is Always More With Jesus, there is always more. More than five thousand people were fed with just five loaves and two fish. And there was more food left over than they had at the beginning. This miracle is a big deal. Other than Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, it’s the only miracle recorded in all four gospels. The repetition means Jesus really wants us to know about it. Why? Jesus teaches us to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11). In other words, Christians are to trust God to provide. And what Jesus teaches, he demonstrates by feeding the five thousand. He takes care of us and provides everything we need. This is a simple lesson to learn, but it is difficult to believe. Your sinful nature wants you to think that you take care of yourself. The devil does not want you to trust God. He wants you to trust yourself and say, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me” (Deuteronomy 8:17). But is that true? Who gives you time to work? Who gives you the strength to work? Who gives you the skills to work? “Remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth” (Deuteronomy 8:18). Jesus doesn’t work miracles to flaunt his power. He works miracles to show that he is God Almighty in human flesh. Jesus gives health and wealth because that is what Jesus does—he gives. He provides his life, death, and resurrection for your salvation. If he can do that, he can do something as simple as provide daily bread. Because with Jesus, there is always more. Jesus’ compassion for you knows no bounds. No need is too impossible for Christ to meet. No sin is too big for Jesus to forgive. You can trust him with anything and everything! When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.” Matthew 13:44-46 Treasure Discovering a hidden treasure is a common dream. Wouldn’t it be great to instantly be wealthy beyond anything you could have imagined? In the first story of today’s Bible reading, Jesus tells us about someone who, finds buried treasure. In ancient times, rich people were known to divide their wealth into three parts: one for doing business, another converted to precious stones with which to flee, and, if necessary, a third part to be buried in a safe place. So, it could happen that when a rich man died, his buried wealth would remain to be found by some fortunate individual. In the second brief story, Jesus speaks of a pearl merchant whose life’s mission was to seek out exceptional pearls and obtain them. Some tirelessly seek treasure, and others just fortunately find it. But the most valuable treasure is that which Jesus has for us. This treasure Jesus tells us is the “kingdom of heaven.” The kingdom is Jesus’ rule in our hearts by faith. When Jesus rules our hearts, when our faith is in him, then we have the treasure of the forgiveness of sins, spiritual life, and eternal salvation—we will enjoy the glories of heaven forever. Still, we don’t have to wait to enjoy this precious treasure. With faith in Jesus comes the peace of knowing we are God’s dear children right now, the hope of present certainty for a blessed future, and the joy of knowing God loves us today, tomorrow, and always. So, whether you stumble upon earthly treasure or spend your life seeking after it, what really matters is that you have the treasure of Jesus. It’s worth giving up everything to make it your own. The Problem: We Suppress, Not FeelWe are programmed to make feelings go away instead of feeling them.We look for distraction—easy to find today—and suppress our emotions.We think our emotions are our enemy.We like to be together with happy people, with no drama.And so we consume a lot of drugs, or we become addicted to social media and our mobile phones.Look at today's health reports:60% of children are chronically ill.10% are autistic.Suicide rates are at an all-time high.Depression has never been at such a high level.Wars are raging like crazy.The suicide rate of U.S. Army servicemen is five times higher than the death rate on the battlefield.Isn't this evidence enough to question a society that supports the suppression of emotions?How Does It Start?We send our five-year-old child to kindergarten. It comes back depressed.We politely ask what happened, and then we say:"Don't see it that way. Don't be emotionally affected. Don't go into your emotions. You see it absolutely wrong."The message is clear: Suppress your emotions.Instead, we should let the child cry or express its emotions fully.Just be there. Comfort it until it finds calmness by itself.You think that will never happen?It will happen—it just needs time.And please, don't scroll on your mobile phone while doing it.A Personal Story: IndiaWe decided to go to India.Our journey was very challenging—so many things went wrong.She wanted to go home. I said: "Go. I will continue."But she stayed.She could express all of her emotions, her doubts, her anxiety. She got severely sick twice.Can you imagine? We went from 45°C heat to freezing snowstorms at 5,400 meters altitude in Ladakh, and then back to 45°C in Delhi and Varanasi.She couldn't eat the Indian food. She had never experienced freezing temperatures as a Thai person. There was no heating. The internet didn't work.Shocking or not?For me, it wasn't—because I'm used to it.At the end of the trip, she asked me: "Where should we go next time?"I said: "Africa."She said: "OK."Why?Because she could express all her emotions and never got abandoned or punished.That is what a true relationship looks like.What Happens When We Suppress Negative Feelings?Suppressed negative emotions will:Make us sick.Influence our decisions negatively.Increase our fear level significantly.Make us addicted to consumption, shopping, distraction, social media, drugs, etc.Isolate us—because we can't express our emotions, we can't build true relationships.Suppress our positive emotions as well.Reduce our vulnerability, sensitivity, and love.Suppress our spontaneity and creativity.Close our heart.Cause choleric reactions—sudden outbursts of anger over minor problems, punishing innocent people.Lead to projections—blaming others for our own wrongdoing.Turn us into robots.The Beauty of Expressing EmotionsWatch a three-year-old child.They don't suppress their emotions.They change their mood within five minutes.When they are happy, they beam with joy.When they are sad, they cry.That is the beauty of expressing emotions.The Solution: MindfulnessMindfulness is not about stopping your thoughts and feelings.It is about learning to observe thoughts and feelings without judgment or attachment.What Is True Adulthood?True adulthood is mindfulness—accepting our own thoughts and emotions, and accepting all emotions from other people without resenting them.How to Learn This?Attend encounter groups and bioenergetic groups—until you learn to express your emotions fully and accept the emotions of other people.Just do it.My Video: Why Fighting Your Feelings Is Making Everything Worse https://youtu.be/c5FOfKBEmEQMy Audio: https://divinesuccess.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/Podcast5/Why-Fighting-Your-Feelings-Is-Making-Everything-Worse.mp3

When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.” Matthew 13:44 The Treasure A man by the name of Edward Doheny [pronounced Doh-HEE-nee] has just arrived in California. The year is 1892. Doheny is a drifter. He’s worked as a mule driver, a fruit packer, and even a singing waiter. But nothing has panned out. His financial future looks grim. One day, you’re walking through town and see a strange thing. You see Doheny digging a hole with a pick and a shovel. Turns out he’s put down all the money he can on some vacant lot just so he can dig there. You roll your eyes. You think to yourself, “I guess desperate drifters do desperate things.” You keep walking. But desperate drifter Edward Doheny knows something you do not know. He spotted a black, thick goo seeping up into this vacant lot. He also has a hunch that people will soon pay money for this thick goo. He’s right. Here, on this lot, he strikes oil. He sets up his first oil well—the first of many. As a result, Edward Doheny becomes one of the wealthiest men in the world. Jesus tells a similar story: A man finds a hidden treasure in a field. When he does, he sells all he has to buy that field. Think about that for a moment. Imagine what his friends and neighbors are thinking. Imagine how silly and foolish they presume he is—how skewed and confused his priorities appear. But he knows something they do not know. He knows about the treasure. Which brings us to your life and mine. The culture around us may often smirk at us in polite contempt. In a society where pleasure, money, recognition, entertainment, and power are the stuff of life, the priorities of a Christian often seem quaint, clueless, even stupid. But we know something others do not yet know. We know about the treasure. We know about Jesus. We know about the priceless riches of forgiveness, peace, purpose, security, and meaning we possess in him. In addition, we know this treasure lasts not only for this life; it is eternal. Day 2916 – Theology Thursday – Ancient Near Eastern Religions versus the God of the Bible Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2916 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2916 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Our current series of Theology Thursday lessons is written by theologian and teacher John Daniels. I have found that his lessons are short, easy to understand, doctrinally sound, and applicable to all who desire to learn more of God's Word. John's lessons can be found on his website, theologyinfive.com. Ancient Near Eastern Religions versus the God of the Bible. The religions of the Ancient Near East form a wide landscape of connected myths, rituals, and divine hierarchies that shaped the worldview of early civilizations. Their gods rose and fell in power, reacted emotionally to events, and relied on worshipers to sustain them. These beliefs created a religious environment built on cycles, fragility, and mutual dependence. The biblical portrayal of Yahweh stands in clear contrast. Scripture presents a God who is self-sufficient, unchanging, and sovereign over creation. Examining these differences clarifies the uniqueness of biblical faith within its ancient setting and helps modern readers understand how Israel's worldview developed in the midst of nations with very different assumptions about the divine realm. The first segment is: The Cyclical Nature of ANE Deities ANE religions anchored their divine stories in the rhythms of the natural world. Gods were believed to participate in the same patterns that shaped human experience. Their power rose and fell with the seasons, crops, weather, and the environment. This worldview created a theological system where even major deities could weaken, die, or disappear, only to return when the cycles of nature renewed themselves. The myths surrounding Inanna and Ishtar reveal this worldview clearly. Their descent into the underworld and eventual return mirrored the cycle of barrenness and renewal that governed agricultural life. Their stories did not present beings who transcended nature but ones who were bound to it. Their vitality could pause or fail, only to be restored when the environment shifted. Egyptian religion expressed a similar idea through the Osiris myth. His murder and restoration aligned with the yearly flooding of the Nile, which created fertile soil for crops. The story served as a theological explanation for agricultural renewal. Osiris did not stand above the cycles of life. He represented them. This pattern appears again and again in ANE pantheons, where divine life and natural life were deeply intertwined. The second segment is: Symbiosis Between Gods and Humans The relationship between the gods and humanity in the ANE was shaped by mutual dependence. The gods depended on humans for food, offerings, honor, and the upkeep of temples. Humans depended on the gods for basic stability, agricultural success, and protection. Religion functioned as a system that maintained cosmic order by ensuring both sides received what they needed. Baal worship in Canaan demonstrates this dynamic. Baal's power and presence were tied to the devotion of his followers. If offerings ceased or rituals were neglected, worshipers feared drought, famine, and ecological collapse. Ugaritic texts describe Baal's strength rising and falling in connection with seasonal struggles against Mot, the god of death. The fortunes of the people depended on Baal's vitality, and Baal's vitality depended on the people. This pattern stretched across Mesopotamia as well. Temples functioned as divine households where priests fed, clothed, and cared for the gods. Worship was not about relationship but maintenance. A god who was not sustained properly could weaken, suffer, or lose influence. These beliefs shaped the ancient expectation that the divine and human worlds were locked in an ongoing exchange of needs and services. The third segment is: The God of the Bible: Transcendent, Stable, and Self-Sufficient The biblical portrait of God stands outside the cycles and limitations that characterized ANE religion. Yahweh does not depend on human worship to sustain His power. He does not rise or fall in strength. His nature remains constant, and His authority extends beyond the boundaries of the natural world. Scripture presents Him as the Creator who governs nature rather than one who participates in its fluctuations. Malachi 3 verse six captures this distinction by declaring that God does not change. The prophets frequently challenge the idea that God requires food or ritual maintenance. Psalm 50 portrays God as the owner of all creation rather than a deity who needs sacrifices for sustenance. Isaiah mocks the absurdity of idols that must be carried because they cannot stand on their own. These passages highlight the difference between the dependent gods of the nations and the self-sufficient God of Israel. Covenant reinforces this distinction. When God binds Himself to Abraham, Moses, or David, His promises flow from His own character and faithfulness rather than human ability to maintain Him. His stability provides a foundation for trust that no ANE god could offer, because their identity and power were subject to the very world they governed. The fourth segment is: Supreme Monotheism and the Divine Council The biblical worldview acknowledges a populated spiritual realm, but it does not portray that realm as harmonious or consistently loyal. Scripture presents a divine council, yet this council reflects a world marked by rebellion and spiritual conflict rather than unity. This stands in sharp contrast with ANE pantheons, where deities had fixed jurisdictions and stable roles. Psalm 82 reveals that members of the divine council failed in their appointed tasks. God confronts them for injustice, corruption, and the oppression of the nations they were meant to govern. Their rebellion is a verdict on their unfaithfulness. The psalm ends with God declaring their coming judgment, making clear that divine beings are not beyond accountability. Genesis 6 describes another rebellion in which the sons of God violate the boundaries God established and bring corruption to humanity. This event shaped the Second Temple Jewish worldview and influenced New Testament writers who saw it as a catastrophic turning point in the history of spiritual conflict. These beings did not act out of ignorance but out of deliberate defiance. The Babel event introduces yet another layer of supernatural rebellion. Deuteronomy 32 verse eight and nine describe God dividing the nations and assigning them under the authority of lesser divine beings. These beings later led their nations into idolatry and spiritual deception, choosing loyalty to their own agendas rather than to the Most High. Their failures explain the origin of the false gods and territorial powers that Israel confronted throughout the Old Testament. The biblical writers describe a supernatural realm that is real, complex, and deeply fractured. God alone stands as the supreme Creator. The other divine beings are not competitors to Him, but they are capable of disobedience, corruption, and rebellion. Unlike ANE pantheons defined by competition between gods of similar rank, the Bible presents defiance of the Most High as the central spiritual crisis in human history. The fifth segment is: Stability Versus Variability in the Divine Realm The gods of the ANE were often unpredictable. Their conflicts explained storms, disasters, and political upheavals. Their emotional reactions shaped the lives of their worshipers, who lived in fear of offending them or failing to provide proper care. This instability was a natural consequence of a pantheon filled with beings shaped by the same vulnerabilities as humans. Yahweh's actions are presented differently. His behavior is anchored in His covenantal character. His judgments are consistent with His purposes rather than expressions of divine mood. His promises stand firm even when humans falter. By presenting God as trustworthy and stable, Scripture establishes a theological foundation that separates Israel's faith from the religions around it. The sixth segment is: The Purpose of Humanity: Servants or Imagers ANE creation stories consistently portray humans as laborers created to meet the needs of the gods. In the Enuma Elish, humans are formed from the blood of Kingu after a divine rebellion. Their function is to relieve the gods of work by maintaining temples and performing essential services. Human worth is connected to usefulness, not intrinsic dignity. The biblical account offers an entirely different vision. Humans are created

Called “The Queen of American Pop Music,” she performed on stage, on television, and in the movies. For example, you can hear her voice and her songs all through the Disney classic, “Lady and the Tramp.” For all the joy she brought, however, perhaps her most memorable song is one that is not joyful at all. In 1969, she recorded a song entitled “Is That All There Is?” In it, a woman reflects on past events in her life, from the loss of her childhood home to going to the circus with her father, and her first romantic love. After each event, she asks herself, “Is that all there is?” She knows that something is missing, but she doesn't know what. And as she looks to the end of her life, she’s convinced that, in her final moments, she'll ask the same question: “Is that all there is?” The song earned Peggy Lee a Grammy Award. It also reached the top of the charts. Clearly, the song had struck a nerve. It still does today. In the closing sentences of the apostle Paul’s first letter to Timothy, he reminds us not to look to the things of this world. Don’t look to the things of this world for security, for fulfillment, for meaning, for identity. Not only are the things of this world uncertain; even if they surround us until the day we die, they offer nothing that lasts. In the end, all we will have is the question, “Is that all there is?” Enter our Creator. Enter God the Son. Enter Jesus. On our behalf, our Savior did what he had to do to rescue us from an empty, pointless existence. His perfect life and death in our place pulled us out of our darkness and back into his light. For now, in him, not only do we bask in his forgiveness; in him, we are once again what he created us to be. We are in the family of God. And because we are, we now have the life that is truly life.
