The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Tyler B. Davis. Classified as a White Man, Dr. Davis is an Adjunct Professor of Theology at St Mary's University. His research explores the history, theology and practice of sanctuary in South Texas. During our recent examination of John A. Haymond's new book on the 1917 “racial mutiny” in Houston, we learned that the 1916 Texas lynching of Jesse Washington in Waco was noted as a contributing factor. This led Gus to Dr. Davis' 2025 text, God of the Whirlwind: Horror, Memory & Story in Black Waco. This work is an oral history anthology of several people classified as black who lived in Waco. Dr. Davis, a Racist Suspect, questions them about their memories and experiences with the local System of White Supremacy and their understanding and views on the Washington lynching. Gus was struck by the overbearing influence of the Religion of White Supremacy on these victims. Many of them spent decades of their life in church and/or become reverends. Much of their understanding of the System of White Supremacy and what it means to be classified as White is contaminated by Racist religious doctrines designed to make slaves/non-white people obey, worship, and forgive people classified as White. Since 1951, when Tibet was formally annexed into the People's Republic of China, Tibet has been a battleground between China's efforts to assert control and the Tibetan people's struggle to preserve their cultural and religious identity. This past August, Xi Jinping made a surprise visit to Tibet, his second since becoming China's top leader in 2012. Less than two months earlier, the Dalai Lama, now 90 years old, announced that his office, not China, would choose his successor when he passes. A few months before that, the Dalai Lama revealed in a memoir that he would reincarnate outside of China. The PRC insists that the next incarnation – the 15th Dalai Lama – will be born inside PRC territory and approved by the Chinese government. What are Beijing's interests in Tibet and how has Xi Jinping pursued them since coming to power? My guest is Dr. Christof Koch, PhD, a pioneering researcher on the topic of consciousness, an investigator at the Allen Institute for Brain Science and the chief scientist at the Tiny Blue Dot Foundation. The events of September 11, 2001 changed the world. Julian reflects on several interpretations of what they meant, proposing that each is a kind of Rorschach-test result based on our own religious and political beliefs, backgrounds, and social conditioning.  The conspiracy theorist simply can't believe something like that could happen to America, going in search of complicated alternative explanations that exist outside of the “official narrative,” even of reality itself. Where the Christian conservative might see a call to Holy War signaling that the End Times is near, Neocon warhawks surrounding Bush observe an opportunity to enact plans for maintaining economic and political power and security. Meanwhile, many on the left see the attack as justifiable “blowback” against American imperialism, Cold War atrocities, and Western colonialism. Religion is merely an inflaming of a fundamentalist minority based on political injustices. What about the Soviet Union? The history of political Islam and massive Muslim caliphates that ruled for nearly 1,300 years? The intractable sectarian conflicts and the multiple internal ideologies vying for control over the Middle East? There may be no easy answers, but perhaps engaging with these different perspectives can allow us to name some of the many factors that got us to 9/11 and the seemingly unsolvable dilemmas of our world today.
