"Because I said so!" is the most common conversation-stopper used by parents all over the world , but Australian-based Lem and Nazanin make it a conversation-starter in their often funny, sometimes cheeky podcast about identity, morality and finding independence when you live in a different world from the one your parents grew up in.
It’s our final episode, and what better way to end season one by talking about how our parents had such high expectations of our education… No pressure of course. But regardless of what background you’re from, your parents were probably big on getting good grades and studying. And of course that didn’t align with what you REALLY wanted to do right? So did you listen to them and get that medical degree? Or did you just end up doing your own thing?Well, Nazanin and Lem were definitely not given an option. Lem got the chance to study in Lebanon - which is where her sexuality came to light. And Nazanin’s mum had to pay her way through a private college, because she was too busy chasing boys! But funnily enough, neither of them are actually working in the same field they studied in.So should we even bother going to uni straight out of high school? Or do you think we should wait a couple of years to work out what we really want to do?Let us know whether you went on to get a degree, and if not, what did your parents have to say about it? Email us on podcast@becauseisaidso.com.au or DM us on Instagram @becauseisaidso_podcast.PS: Don’t worry, Lem and Nazanin will be back for season 2 shortly!CREDITSHosts: Nazanin and Lem Executive Producer: NazaninTheme Music: LemCover Art: Atena Leon
How old were you when you first realised what sex was? Who told you about the birds and the bees? Your parents? Friends? Maybe you learnt about it in school?Well it’s no secret that fucking, and even talking about it, is a big fat no no within most diverse cultures. But if you’re from a young, modern and developed country, chances are that sex is an open topic at home.Lem and Nazanin talk about how they were brought up with the taboo topic of sex, and what impact it had on their sexual experiences.Do you think coitus should be openly talked about with kids?Let us know how your parents dealt with the subject by emailing podcast@becauseisaidso.com.au or DM us on Instagram @becauseisaidso_podcast.CREDITSHosts: Nazanin and Lem Executive Producer: NazaninTheme Music: LemCover Art: Atena Leon
By now you’ve probably worked out that you shouldn’t listen to Because I Said So! around the little ones. And as you can tell by the episode name… this is one you definitely, like absolutely, 150% shouldn’t listen to around them.In this episode Lem and Nazanin chat about the different cultural celebrations and how, if at all, they celebrate them. And Lem admits to wanting to be a nun at one point in her life, while Nazanin’s husband thinks Santa’s a paedophile. A bit harsh yeah, but is he the only one that thinks that way?Anyway… Happy Easter to you if you celebrate it and Happy Chocolate Eating Day if you don’t.Let us know how you found out the Easter Bunny and/or Santa wasn’t real by emailing podcast@becauseisaidso.com.au or DM us on Instagram @becauseisaidso_podcast.CREDITSHosts: Nazanin and Lem Executive Producer: NazaninTheme Music: LemCover Art: Atena Leon
Have your parents ever tried to set you up while you were at a FUNERAL? Has your grandmother pinched you for merely cracking a smile while you're at one? How do you feel about wearing all black?Sure funerals can be cathartic and give you closure, but they’re also super sad and morbid. So why can’t we make them fun? Kind of like a goodbye party, but instead you’re not there for it. That’s the kind of funeral Lem has in mind anyway. Nazanin on the other hand wants to be cremated and have her ashes made into jewellery so everyone can wear her… Lovo much??Let us know if you have a fun funeral plan by emailing podcast@becauseisaidso.com.au or DM us on Instagram @becauseisaidso_podcast.
‘When you grow up you’re going to university, and you’re going to become a *insert ridiculously hard/boring profession here*’. Sound familiar? If this is something you constantly heard growing up, then your parents probably had very high academic and career expectations for you. But do you think they should have a say in career choices? Well, Nazanin is probably one of the few that’s grateful for her dad’s ultimatum. And, Lem opens up about how she sometimes feels like she doesn’t fit in when it comes to her job. Do you think there’s still a lack of culture awareness in the workplace? Or are we just being too ‘sensitive’?Plus, where do you get your work ethic from? Your parents? Is it a cultural thing? Or maybe you’re just a people pleaser?Tell us whether your parents had a say in your career choices by emailing podcast@becauseisaidso.com.au or DM us on Instagram @becauseisaidso_podcast.CREDITSHosts: Nazanin and Lem Executive Producer: NazaninTheme Music: LemCover Art: Atena Leon
Pubes, mono-brows and body hair. Some people keep it el natural and others try anything and everything to get rid of it... But have you ever heard of using BAT BLOOD on BABIES?! Yeah, us neither, but apparently it’s a thing.Did you know that certain cultures have strict age limits on hair removal, while others are more concerned about HOW it should be done? Exhibit A - Lem’s mum waxed her leg hair, and on the flip side Nazanin’s mother bleached her’s instead. As if that was gonna make a difference.Plus, the girls come to realise that neither of them were given the good ol’ puberty chat. Did you miss out too?If you had a traumatic, but yet funny story about your first shaving/waxing experience, please share it by emailing podcast@becauseisaidso.com.au or DM us on Instagram @becauseisaidso_podcast.CREDITSHosts: Nazanin and Lem Executive Producer: NazaninTheme Music: LemCover Art: Atena Leon
Are you the type of person that’ll get into a fight over who wants to pay the dinner bill? Maybe you feel awkward about it all? What if your friend offers to pay for you? Do you accept the first go, or do you convincingly say a few noes?It might sound counter intuitive, but in certain cultures rejecting an offer is considered polite… But what happens if it’s not rejected, but rather met with directness? We chat about how Nazanin encountered that exact problem with her friend and she’s very annoyed about it. Do you think she has a right to be? Or should she just accept that the Australian etiquette is different?Share your thoughts and stories by emailing podcast@becauseisaidso.com.au or DM us on Instagram @becauseisaidso_podcast.CREDITSHosts: Nazanin and Lem Executive Producer: NazaninTheme Music: LemCover Art: Atena Leon
While we love a good ‘Because I said so’ moment, in this episode we decided to not bitch about our parents. Instead Lem wanted to touch on her first traumatic experience of being catcalled at just 13 years of age, while Nazanin confesses her flattery for it. Laundry. Seating arrangements at a wedding. Inviting family to a BBQ. Boyfriends. Grandkids. Using the good cutlery. Birthday presents. The frequency of phone calls... and lack of appreciation. Are these things you’ve fought about with your parents? Are you still arguing with them about it… even years later? Did you stop talking to them because of it?Well, fighting with your parents seems like something you should’ve grown out of by now, right? Wrong. And we’re proof of that.Nazanin’s relationship with her mum is great 99% of the time, but then along comes that 1% and BAM! They don't talk for three months… and they live together! Now in her adulthood, she’s come to realise a part of it’s due to a lack of parental EQ. All the while, Lem’s decided to take a different approach when it comes to arguments, and that is asking her mum to apologise when she’s in the wrong. Do your parents lack emotional intelligence? We’re sure you’ve got a juicy story or two, if so don’t be shy and share it with us by emailing podcast@becauseisaidso.com.au or DM us on Instagram @becauseisaidso_podcast.CREDITSHosts: Nazanin and LemExecutive Producer: NazaninTheme Music: LemCover Art: Atena Leon
It's our first ever episode, so why not start it off with a bang... from the back. See what we did there?!Depending on where in the world you're from, sex is probably a no go topic with your parents. And when asked why, you were most likely met with the old "Because I said so!" line. Well, that's why we're here.We all know sex can sometimes be daunting, but what about anal? Are you more comfortable talking about one over the other? Maybe you had butt sex before intercourse? In this episode we answer some of those questions, and also chat about how cultural differences influence thoughts of anal sex. How open are you to it? Perhaps anal is something you’ve been wanting to try, but you've been too shy to ask for it?Share your naughty stories by emailing podcast@becauseisaidso.com.au or DM us on Insta @becauseisaidso_podcast.CREDITSHosts: Nazanin and LemExecutive Producer: NazaninTheme Music: LemCover Art: Atena Leon
Moving out of home can mean stepping out of childhood and stepping into independence. But at what age is it ok to leave the nest? Perhaps you have to be married before you're allowed to leave? Maybe you feel guilty of leaving your parents so you can’t move out?Well, it was a mixed bag for us. For the first time in her adult life, Lem feel’s like a grown up, whereas Nazanin had a tough time trying to prove she was capable of living on her own. But with that said… Is it really worth moving out of your parents’ house?Tell us what moving out of home was like for you by emailing podcast@becauseisaidso.com.au or DM us on Instagram @becauseisaidso_podcast.CREDITSHosts: Nazanin and LemExecutive Producer: NazaninTheme Music: LemCover Art: Atena Leon
English the most widely spoken language in the world, and it’s also one of the hardest to learn. But what if you meet someone you’re interested in and they don’t speak a word of it? Would you even bother getting to know them? Maybe you’d use google translate and hope for the best?In this episode we chat about how some English speakers have one thing in common – they expect others to speak English, when it isn’t even their first language.Plus, Lem tells us about the time she met a beautiful Brazilian girl who spoke zero english, but yet they managed to communicate in other ways *wink wink.
