Better Call Saul Season 1, Episode 9 "Pimento". Nothing was hidden from us in the previous eight episodes, yet here we are, surprised again by the evil genius Gilligan and his all-star writers. It was Chuck pulling the strings and keeping Jimmy out of the firm all along. While the rejection Jimmy feels is hard to watch, Chuck is probably right, Jimmy is dangerous when he's armed with a law degree. Better Call Saul Season 1, Episode 8 "RICO". This episode starts with a prequel to present "Saul" events. Jimmy starts in the mailroom and works his way through law school, eventually passing the bar on his third try. Kim seems romantically close in these earlier days and Chuck is well, pre-electromagnetism problems, working his corner office attorney magic, while Hamlin puts Jimmy's legal career plans on hold. Coming back to real "Saul" time, Jimmy uncovers a potentially huge RICO case against the Sandpiper home. Better Call Saul Season 1, Episode 7 "Bingo". I'm not sure what was more difficult to watch, Mike agonizing over his lost son or Jimmy doing the same over his dream career. We are still left with the big question, what event will take Jimmy completely over to his Saul persona? I don't care so much about Chuck's arc, or even the romance between Jimmy and Kim. This episode opens and closes with him "building his brand" through scams, the latter of which is quite refined and polished. Jimmy/Saul is also developing more courage. Better Call Saul Season 1, Episode 3 "Nacho". Saul/Jimmy shows us he does have a conscience as he tries to go back and right his scam with the Kettlemans. Jimmy finds the camping Kettlemans and the episode ends with some interesting open ends. Better Call Saul Season 1, Episode 1 "Uno". True to the closing dialogue in Breaking Bad, Saul is living in quiet desperation in a Cinnabon in Omaha, Nebraska. But this is only a flash-forward, Saul is a struggling Jimmy McGill, cutting his public defender teeth in Albuquerque courtrooms for $700 a case. Jimmy's brother Chuck is struggling with metal difficulties and Saul/Jimmy helps him. The confrontation with Chuck's partners at Hamlin, Hamlin, McGill set up a conflict that we are likely to see for the rest of the season. He gets the car started and drives off with Marty Robbins' "Felina" playing on the stereo. Walt makes it back to New Mexico and locates the Schwartz home. He tricks Gretchen and Eliot into delivering 9.7 million dollars to the White family via irrevocable trust in ten months when Jr. turns 18. Walt also catches up with Todd and Lydia, delivering the ricin and arranging a meeting at the Nazi compound. He says goodbye to Skylar, Holly and Jr. for the final time, revealing the location of Hank and Gomez's bodies so she can negotiate leniency with the authorities. Walt puts his final plan into play, designing the M60 machine gun to operate by remote from the trunk of his Cadillac. The gun takes out Jack's gang, leaving just Todd and Jack. Jesse strangles Todd and Walt shoots Jack exactly the way Jack murdered Hank. Lydia calls and Walt tells her she has consumed the ricin. Recap of Breaking Bad flashback 515, "Granite State". The Disappearerer arrives with his passenger at the vacuum repair shop. In a twist, that passenger is Saul. Ed the Disappearerer processes him in and we learn that Saul's new life will be in Nebraska. Saul meets Walt here at the vacuum shop and ends Walt's grand ideas to recruit a 5 man hit team. DEA agents drive Marie home and discover that the Schrader house has been broken into and Jesse's recorded confession has been stolen. That confession is being played at the neo Nazi compound. The DEA have taken everything from Skylar and she reaches even lower desperation when the neo Nazis invade her home and threaten baby Holly. Walt arrives at his sparse new house in New Hampshire via a 2200 mile ride in the tank of a propane truck, where Ed will continue to supply him once a month. Jesse has a failed escape attempt at the Nazi compound and they punish him by murdering Andrea. During a trip to town, Walt calls Walter Jr. and attempted to reconcile and send him a small amount of money. Recap of Breaking Bad 514, "Ozymandias". The gunfight plays out in the desert scene from last episode. Gomez is dead and Hank is badly wounded. Things develop quickly as Walt negotiates for Hank's life. His unsuccessful pleading involves revealing the location of the buried money. The money cache becomes a grave for Hank and Gomie. Walt points out Jesse's hiding spot to the neo Nazisand tells him that he watched Jane die. Jesse's fate belongs to the Nazis as they take him away. Walt runs out of gas during his exit with one of the barrels of cash and has to push it through the desert. He buys an old pickup from an old Indian and gets back home. Walt has his final confrontation with the White family, arguing then wrestling with Jr. and Skylar, he drives away with Holly into the desert night. In a final phone call home with the detectives listening, Walt chastises (and thus, absolves) Skylar for being ignorant of his crimes. Recap of Breaking Bad 508, "Gliding Over All". This episode closes out the first half of season 5. Todd and Walt need to take care of Mike's car and body. They do this behind Jesse's back.Dennis the laundry manager strives to make a deal with the DEA for a reduced sentence. Hank holds out as he now has nine inmates on the hook and without resources. Walt meets with Lydia and gets the names of the remaining crew. He then makes arrangements with Jack to wipe out these nine criminal witnesses in two minutes. Later, Hank learns of the murdered witnesses and shares a drink at home with Walt. They exchange stories about their jobs as youths and we see a montage of cooking that represents three months of show time passing.Skylar shows Walt the massive amount of money they have accumulated, and that she has stored, in a rented storage facility. The vast amount of cash is too big to count, Skylar has no idea how much has been accumulated. This prompts Walt to his decision, he's out.After an oncology test that reveals his cancer has returned, Walt meets with Jesse and gives him his $5 million. They reminisce about their early cooks in the RV and we realize they will never cook together again.Walt and Skylar entertain the kids and the Schraders at a friendly family dinner. Hank uses the master bathroom and discovers Walt's copy of "Leaves of Grass", the gift from Gale with its inscription to Walt. Hank doggedly tells Gomez to keep an eye on the lawyer, Dan Wachsberger. Dan is the common lawyer for all nine members of Mike's team stuck in prison.Jesse asks for his money a final time and Walt refuses, using Todd instead to assist him in the next meth cook. Todd tries hard, but is not very skillful at drug chemistry.Gomez' pursuit of lawyer Dan pays off as he catches him depositing money at the bank. Walt learns of this and tips off Mike, just in time for him to escape the ABQ police. Now on the run, Mike asks Saul to bring him his stash of cash and passports. Walt offers to bring these to Mike. Still seeking the nine names of Mike's crew, Walt delivers the cash to Mike. In a rage, Walt shoots Mike when he refuses to disclose the names. Lydia adds further value by sourcing an "ocean of methylamine". This leads to the train heist hinted at in the episode's title. Young Drew Sharp bookends the adventures with the heist, a robbery of 1000 gallons of methylamine from a stopped freight train. In the beginning, Drew is innocent and free, riding his motorcycle across desert landscape.
