Ontario Premier Doug Ford has sent a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney outlining what projects he believes are in Ontario's best economic interest. Steve Paikin and John Michael McGrath discuss how the relationship between the two levels of government is unfolding. Ontario's budget is being delivered on May 15th, but, unlike in the past, announcements on the province's spending aren't tightly guarded secrets. Steve and John Michael examine what's been announced so far and how much it will cost you. The Ontario Liberals have official party status, which gives them privileges at Queen's Park that they haven't had for a while. It's a big change for them, but they're still limited in what they can do faced by a majority government. Minister of Education Paul Calandra is sending investigators to several school boards in Ontario to probe their finances, and, in one case, is recommending the ministry take control. Steve Paikin and John Michael McGrath discuss how this happened. Could Donald Trump's trade threats lead to an improved interprovincial electrical transmission system? Advocates certainly hope that's the case, and it would be much needed as consumption is set to rise 75% by 2050. The province and its doctors have reached an agreement that should benefit patients in rural communities. They also talk about what happened after the debate as leaders shook hands and spoke to one another. And what happened with the post-debate scrum that was cancelled. The 90-day reprieve on Donald Trump's global tariffs do not extend to Canada, so Ontario is offering tax breaks for businesses. Steve Paikin and John Michael McGrath discuss why these temporary measures might need to be followed by long term solutions. There will be a 2-year feasibility study into Doug Ford's plan for a tunnel underneath the 401. Steve and JMM discuss the project's inevitable high price tag and other ways the province could ease congestion. The province is expanding strong mayor powers to 169 more municipalities in Ontario. Doug Ford imposed an electricity surcharge on Monday, Donald Trump responded with doubling the tariffs on steel and aluminum, and then they called the whole thing off. Steve Paikin and John Michael McGrath examine a chaotic week in Canada and United States trade relations. Doug Ford's team at Queen's Park is going to look a lot like the old team with few MPPs losing their seats during the last election. The government will also deliver a full budget, and Steve and John Michael speculate what might be in that. The Supreme Court of Canada struck down Doug Ford's third party election spending law, which is a win for unions and civil society groups. Reaction continues to pour in after Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced the government would pay $225 million to end an agreement with the The Beer Store one year early. One of the questions being asked repeatedly - why pay millions to end an agreement that was due to expire next year anyways? Does it have anything to do with theories the Premier will call an early election? Steve and JMM discuss the possibility. The Ontario government is insisting it complies with public disclosure laws. That's after reporting from Global News revealed government staff are using their Gmail accounts in order to avoid disclosure under the freedom of information act. But will there be any consequences beyond the political arena? Plus, a historic moment in the legislature as NDP MPP Sol Mamakwa asks a question in Oji-Cree. Back in 2021, the Ontario government used the notwithstanding clause to push through changes to campaign finance laws. Critics say these changes violate the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This week, the Supreme Court heard the case and its decision could have a major impact on the next provincial election.Back during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, provincial courts began offering a deal to certain cases where a person was charged with driving under the influence. The person could plead guilty and rather than face federal charges, they would be charged under the Highway Traffic Act, which offers less severe penalties. This deal was offered to clear a backlog of cases. Steve and JMM discuss how this squares with a provincial government that has made itself known for being tough on crime. And, another story where politics run into reality as the federal government squashes an attempt by the city of Toronto to decriminalize drugs for personal use. Several senior BJP leaders todayy took to X and added ‘Modi Ka Parivar' (Modi's family) in their social media handle usernames. This was an ‘interim Budget' since the term of the current government will end soon and the country will go to polls. She began her Budget speech with references to the Union government's schemes in the social sectors. No changes were announced in direct or indirect tax rates, unlike in the 2019-20 interim Budget. Fiscal Deficit target for next financial year is set at 5.1%.Jharkhand Governor C P Radhakrishnan met five legislators of the ruling JMM-Congress alliance on Thursday, a day after JMM leader and Hemant Soren loyalist Champai Soren staked claim to form the government in the state. Demanding an inquiry, the opposition parties asked whether the government considers public funds as its exclusive property. The Reserve Bank of India on Wednesday barred Paytm Payments Bank from offering all its core services — including accounts and wallets — from March, effectively crippling the company's business. The action is technically not a cancellation of the licence of Paytm Payments Bank, but it constricts the company's operations to a very large extent. The RBI has allowed the withdrawal or utilisation of balance amounts by customers “without any restrictions, up to their available balance”.Congress leader Rahul Gandhi restarted the yatra from West Bengal's Malda on Thursday and entered Murshidabad in the afternoon. The back window of Rahul's car broke on Wednesday, as thousands of people thronged Labha Bridge to see the Yatra enter the state. The Congress cried foul and initially claimed that "anti-socials" had pelted stones at Rahul's vehicle. However, the party later clarified that the window pane was damaged when sudden brakes had to be applied as a woman came in front of the vehicle. Rahul's Yatra is set to enter Uttar Pradesh from Chandauli on 14th of Feb.This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.
