Episode Notes S6E10 - Join us as we sit down with the one and only Laura Pursell. She'll be telling us tales from acting to singing her hits and much much more. Her nostalgic, lush and heartfelt voice, Laura Pursell's smooth west coast vocals are backed by the genius of her famous father Bill Pursell, who wrote 8 out of 10 arrangements and played piano on all 10 tracks. The rich orchestration, recorded by Nashville's A-team players. Mr. Pursell is perhaps best known for his hit record "Our Winter Love," but also played piano on many of Johnny Cash's albums in the 1960s, and worked as a session musician and arranger for Patsy Cline, Johnny Paycheck, Hoover, Joan Baez, Eric Andersen, Scotty Moore, J.J. Cale, Willie Nelson, Dan Fogelberg, and others. In 1985, Pursell was named Composer of the Year by the Tennessee Music Teachers Association. At 18, she was cast as Dick Van Patton's niece in a nationally televised Christmas special, “The Gift of Song”, starring a host of country music stars. Relocating to LA in the early 90's, she studied at the South Coast Repertory and Beverly Hills Playhouse and has starred in countless stage productions all over LA, including "Blue Moon Dancing" by Ed Graczyk, "In the City for the Summer" (Variety singled out her gritty performance), and the farcical, outrageous "And Then There was Nun" which played to sold out houses for 2 extensions, where she did a hilarious sendup of Gloria Swanson. She was a long time member of the Company of Angels, LA's oldest repertory theatre, winning a Dramalogue Award for her saucy, sword-wielding performance in the mainstage production of “Zastrozzi”. She appeared in an iconic video for Weird Al Yankovic, spoofing Tanya Harding in the "Mmmm Mmmm" song (where she did her own figure skating). She appeared in several episodes of "Days of Our Lives" and had a small but pivotal role in "The Landlady" starring Talia Shire. In 2013, she was cast as one of the three leads in a hilarious coming-of-middle-age web series called "Living the Dream", and in 2015, she had the starring role in "Only the Moon Howls", a moving one act which won the Encore! Award at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. Her performance was singled out for its "deep emotional access" and hailed as "heartbreaking", "truthful", "sensitive" and "vulnerable". A film version of the piece is planned for late 2015. In 2001, she landed a plum role, singing for Betty and President Gerald Ford in Palm Springs. Over the years, she has recorded and performed with some of the greatest jazz musicians on the west coast. She has performed in St. Petersburg, Russia, Dublin Ireland and in west coast venues such as Spazio, Vitello's, The Money Tree, Barone's, Monteleone's, The San Ysidro Ranch (Santa Barbara), Vicky's of Santa Fe (Palm Springs) and the Canyon Club. She appeared with Gary Tole's "Legends of Swing" orchestra and the Doug MacDonald's 13-piece "Jazz Coalition". She currently performs every Thursday at Mixology 101 in the Grove at the LA Farmer's Market with a stellar jazz trio. You can hear his work day in and day out: the Spanish-style acoustic work on Marty's El Paso, the opening and unforgettable lick on Roy Orbison's Oh Pretty Woman, plus dozens upon dozens more. He was one of the most sought after session men in the industry. Oh, and his jazz work with Mancini, Hirt and Fountain were followed by a gig as session leader for Vanguard Records' album releases of Joan Baez, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Country Joe. If there's a word that goes a step beyond prolific, it describes Grady Martin. Join us for a show that celebrates the legend.

Justin was out last week, so we've pulled this from deep in the archives buried in the back of the TCBCast salt mines: Gurdip and Justin's 2022 review of Pat Boone's landmark 1963 Elvis tribute record "Pat Boone Sings Guess Who?" No, we're not joking!  This may be the most we're ever gonna talk about Pat Boone at one time so we crammed in a few of his other hits into the discussion on top of this... album? Experience? Prank? It's the project that got Boone inducted into Colonel Parker's Snowmen's League of America and features arrangements by credible jazz pianist Paul Smith. Part spoof, part homage... if you can only say one thing, well you can't say that Pat Boone was never in on the joke! Then, from the July 2022 edition of TCBCast Now, Justin heads west for our "Song of the Month" segment, selecting Marty Robbins' iconic 1959 showdown ballad "Big Iron," while Gurdip was inspired to pick Englebert Humperdinck's sweeping 1968 recording "A Man Without Love" by a recent movie viewing. Both songs Elvis was likely to have been familiar with, released during his lifetime from contemporaries! Next week on TCBCast, we'll be bringing our first impressions of the "Memphis" box set which releases THIS FRIDAY, August 9 - plus EAP Society co-host John Michael Heath will be joining in for a special episode about the history of Memphis' music industry.  If you like this kind of content, you can hear more bonus content just like this that we do for our supporters over at Patreon.com/TCBCast. We kindly thank all our Patreon backers - your support allows us to continue to provide thoughtful, provocative, challenging and well-researched perspectives on Elvis's career, his peers and influences, and his cultural impact and legacy!

Storytelling in song is not new. It's mankind's way of conveying, in both accuracy and reflection, the narrative from one perspective. Embellishments and hooks have long been the best way to make the story easy to digest and, if need be, to get a point (likely sociopolitical) across. We'll be doing just that in this Friday's episode: stories based in war, natural disasters, national tragedies and personal conflict. We'll take a hundred year tour of storytelling from Bessie Smith to the Drive-by Truckers, from Memphis Minnie and The Tex-I-An Boys to Calexico, The Staple Singers and Marty Robbins. There are floods, murders, environmental catastrophes, bombings, and some wartime solemnity to be shared today. Step into the vibrant world of fashion as we sit down with Manny Cuevas, the formidable designer who's stitched his legacy into the very fabric of the industry. Growing up amidst the swirl of his father Manuel's tailor shop, Manny's tale is woven with the golden threads of heritage and innovation. From the eclectic celebrity clientele of his youth to the birth of his own label, Wear It Out by Manny, we explore the symphony of style and music that's danced through his career, especially the beat of change that came with his move to the heart of Nashville. We trace the footsteps of his journey as he crafts limited edition lines, fusing the exclusivity of couture with the reach of ready-to-wear. But it's not just about the glitz of the garments; Manny gets real about the hustle it takes to raise $8.9 million, storm New York Fashion Week, and the rush of seeing his designs sell like hotcakes in the aftermath. His story isn't just a lesson in style‚ it's a masterclass in turning dreams into tangible triumphs. As we wrap up, Manny's passion for design unfurls like the finest silk, revealing a philosophy that's as personal as it is professional. He imparts wisdom to budding designers, reflecting on moments that marked his career‚ like Bob Dylan's Vatican performance and the shine of a lifetime achievement award. But it's the intimate memories, the blend of art and celebrity from his father's shop, and the solid foundation of support that truly dress the soul of this episode. Join us, and let Manny Cuevas tailor an experience that will leave you inspired, informed, and immeasurably enriched by the threads that connect us all. We cover a ton of cool topics in this extended episode including: Getting started in his dad's shop at the age of 6 by digging leather scraps out of the trash and sewing them together Working with Country Music elite like Johhny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Little Jimmy Dickens, Marty Robbins, and Porter Wagoner  Being bounced on the knees of Salvador Dali as a child When major designer labels knock off your designs Being mentored by Alan Tucker, co-creator of Calvin Klein How taking big, unheard-of risks paid off in big ways headlining fashion weeks in New York and Mexico City Working in the shadow of his father, legendary fashion icon Manuel, and the challenge of making a name for himself Designing Bob Dylan's stage outfit for his concert in front of the Pope at the Vatican A run-in with Sylvester Stallone as a kid Learning lessons about how a man should talk to a woman by watching Ronald speak to Nancy Reagan...and SO much more! BIO Manny Cuevas was born into fashion design royalty. He began working with his father – the world-renown designer Manuel – at the age of 6, designing for and dressing everyone from American Presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan and both George Bushes – to music royalty such as Liberace, Johnny Cash, The Rat Pack Elite, John Lennon, Dolly Parton, Roy Rogers, The Grateful Dead, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, The Jackson Five, David Lee Roth, Kid Rock, Jack White, and Kenny Chesney – to Hollywood icons like Marlon Brando, John Wayne, Jack Nicholson, John Travolta, and Sylvester Stallone, to name a few. After being approached in 2006 by Alan Tucker (who helped Calvin Klein create and launch the Calvin Klein brand) about creating a ready-to-wear line, Manny has developed into a global fashion force of his own. He's headlined fashioned weeks in New York and Mexico City, and his signature clothing line, Wear it Out by Manny, can be found in stores and boutiques around the globe. And Manny himself designed the suit that Johnny Cash was laid to rest in.

This week, the Patron Saint of the Dollar Store herself blesses us with her presence. S.G. Goodman joins the show to talk about her meteoric rise to prominence in the Americana music scene. The last 12-18 months have included her being named Americana Emerging Artist of the Year, releasing her second album to high acclaim, having Tyler Childers cover “Space and Time” on his Rustin' in the Rain album, then being asked to join him on stage at the Grand Ole Opry, then going on tour to open for Childers and Jason Isbell … WOW! Goodman sat in with Falls to talk about the rise, her background, the whole Tyler Childers evolution with Space and Time and a lot more. Frank and Falls also talk about the Jason Isbell-Amanda Shires divorce, The 2024 Grammys and more. Frank lamented the fact Childers's In Your Love video didn't win.  And, of course, both share their regular pickin' the grinnin' recommendations for new music. Today's guest brings me back to a simpler time. Welcome Natalie Ribbons of Tele Novella. I learned about her family connection to radio and her parents' decision that she should be a concert pianist after they inherited a piano. While Natalie may have disagreed, it IS what got her singing and steered her to a performing arts high school (after getting kicked out of her previous school). That's where she took secret guitar lessons. She formed the band Agent Ribbons where everything was first time DIY. So they may have overdone a few things, maybe took a wrong turn or two. For example, after building up a following in California, moving to Texas because of two Weimaraners. And Natalie tells the story of the event that spelled the end of Agent Ribbons but how it simultaneously spawned Tele Novella. And it's STILL a rollercoaster ride. They weren't happy with the way things were going and Natalie left music for about three years. But leave it to good ol' PBR to bring ya back in. (That's beer for those who don't know). But the Pabst connection actually helped shape the sound of the band. Tele Novella has a new album out called Poet's Tooth. The music is reminiscent of the great western sounds I (and my dad) grew up on, like Marty Robbins. Listening to makes me feel like I'm right there with the band in Lockhart, TX. It's on Kill Rock Stars, so grab it, download it, or stream it. Follow tele_novella_tx on IG and TikTok, Tele Novella on FB. We are @PerformanceAnx on socials. QUOTES FOR REFLECTION“Too many think lightly of sin, and therefore think lightly of the Savior.”~Charles Spurgeon, Reformed Baptist Minister (1834-1892) “People do not drift toward Holiness. Apart from grace-driven effort, people do not gravitate toward godliness, prayer, obedience to Scripture, faith, and delight in the Lord. We drift toward compromise and call it tolerance; we drift toward disobedience and call it freedom; we drift toward superstition and call it faith. We cherish the indiscipline of lost self-control and call it relaxation; we slouch towards prayerlessness and delude ourselves into thinking we have escaped legalism; we slide toward godlessness and convince ourselves we have been liberated.”~D.A. Carson, Author and New Testament Scholar “A significant majority of Americans were agreed that the following are sins: Adultery 81%, Racism 74%, Using ‘hard' drugs such as cocaine, heroine, meth, LSD, etc. 65%, Not saying anything if a cashier gives you too much change back 63%, Having an abortion 56%… Not reporting some income on your tax returns 52%.”~Ellison Research Poll 2008 “Sin is believing the lie that you are self-created, self-dependent and self-sustained.”~Augustine, theologian and pastor in Africa (354-430) “Happiness won't arrive, it has to be cultivated. Only behavior and its consequences will make you happy. Being happy requires you to work your ‘how' muscles and to be aware; you need to consciously focus on the good things and not the bad. This is not to bury your head in the sand, some things need to be faced up to, but you need to focus on those things you can have agency over.”~Psychology Today 2021 “It's a sin, a sin the way I love you, because I know our love could never be. It's a sin to say that I don't miss you, When silence proves that you've forgotten me.”~Marty Robbins, country singer (1925-1984). “The consciousness of sin was formerly the starting point of all preaching; but today it is gone. Characteristic of the modern age, above all else, is a supreme confidence in human goodness; the religious literature of the day is redolent of that confidence. Get beneath the rough exterior of men, we are told, and we shall discover enough self-sacrifice to found upon it the hope of society; the world's evil, it is said, can be overcome with the world's good; no help is needed from outside the world.”~J. Emily chats with Indianna Hale about her new album, Yesterday's Glitter, which is out now on Perpetual Doom. Indianna's co-producer Jason Cirimele also joins in on the chat and the two discuss their collaboration on this record, as well as their many additional musical projects. ------ Yesterday's Glitter, a new record from San Francisco's Indianna Hale features indie rock in the vein of Cate Le Bon, Faye Webster, and Cass McCombs and draws from 1950s torch-pop icons like Patsy Cline, the songs on Yesterday's Glitter come wrapped in A.M.-era gauze. It's classic Indianna Hale —the perfect fusion of Marty Robbins and Liz Phair you never knew you needed.   The twelve tracks on Yesterday's Glitter resonate with vintage timbre but they also cut with a twenty-first century urgency. Lead Single “I Can't Talk To You” lightly teases a lover for being too self centered, while the melodic bass and chimey guitar weave a counterpoint that almost tells a story of its own. “Nothing you can say to a person with a broken heart,” she sings. “Nothing you can hear when the song in your head's too country.” The album's second single, "Hollow the Words," is sonically peppy and lilting, but finds clouds behind its silver lining. "It was tragically beautiful being with you," Hale sings. She describes the song, inspired by the transience of San Francisco, as "a love song to my friend family." It's emblematic of an album whose rumbling bass and soaring vocals are always pretty, but never simple. Hale describes recording Yesterday's Glitter as a serendipitous process of "electric collaboration" alongside producer and guitar player Jason Cirimele. "While tracking 'The Tighter the Grip,' Jason said 'You know what this song needs?' To which I replied, 'Fuzz bass chords on the chorus!' He said 'That's exactly what I was going to say!'" Over the course of three years, the pair brought in friends and bandmates to create the record's rich sound, including Brian Bethel on bass and Rob Mills (Spooky Mansion) and Cody Rhodes (Geographer, Curls) on drums. On Yesterday's Glitter, mid-century country pop stylings get fitted with fuzzy guitars and filtered through a curtain of dreamy Casio nostalgia to create an album you'll have on repeat.

Lyricist Bernie Taupin is one half of one of the most successful songwriting partnerships of all time. For more than 50 years, he has written the lyrics for Elton John's songs including Tiny Dancer, Candle In The Wind, Rocket Man, Your Song and hundreds more. Having first met in 1967, after they both answered an advert in the NME placed by a record company seeking new musical talent, Elton John and Bernie Taupin have sold more than 300 million albums globally. Born in Lincolnshire, Bernie Taupin has lived in States since the mid 1970s and became an American citizen in 1990. With the publication of a memoir called Scattershot, he made a rare visit to the UK to look back at his life in lyrics. For This Cultural Life, Bernie Taupin discusses his childhood fascination with narrative poetry and storytelling. Hearing the songs of 1950s American country singer Marty Robbins, which told stories of cowboys and outlaws, was a life changing experience for Taupin. He recalls the impact of seeing the Sam Peckinpah western movie The Wild Bunch in 1969, a film renowned for its violent portrayal of 19th century cowboy life, and how it influenced the themes explored in the lyrics of the third Elton John album, Tumbleweed Connection, in 1970. Bernie Taupin also explores the impact of literature on his lyric writing and how flawed protagonists in novels by W. Somerset Maugham and Graham Greene in particular helped inspire the characters and stories in his own songs. He tells John Wilson about the duo's unusual songwriting process in which he sends Elton John completed lyrics, who then composes the songs around the words, a method that they have used throughout their long partnership. LESSONS THAT SKYROCKETED MY BUSINESS The lessons that come to us on our journey can change our lives if we are open to embracing them. We simply need to see the silver lining. This week I received an email from a client. She said, "This week I was really wondering if this is worth my time. My life is so out of balance!!" My heart fell to my stomach. It hurt so much, because I have been there. Growing your podcast can be lonely. Building a business and being an entrepreneur can often make you feel like you're alone on an island. Over the years I have realized that it is truly darkest before the light. Just when you think you're on the wrong path, the sun comes over the horizon. There are four lessons I've learned over the years that can help you when you're ready to throw in the towel. If you want to talk about your journey and craft your podcast strategy, apply for a free podcast strategy call with me at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/apply. THE LESSONS OF CORNERS First, embrace change. You never know what opportunity is around the corner. Music was all around me growing up. It really developed my love of every genre. I grew up listening to Jim Croce, the Beach Boys and Tom Jones from my mom. Dad was listening to Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers and Marty Robbins. My older brothers and sisters were all about the Beatles, Elton John and Bachman Turner Overdrive. When it came to my babysitter, we were listening to the Eagles, John Denver and the BeeGees. Rick was my best friend. He was listening to the Doors, the Cars and the Clash. RECORD STORE LESSONS When I was a senior in high school, I played the sax in band and landed a job at a local record store. I loved music and this was perfect. One night in the fall, a coworker asked me to cover his Saturday night shift at the store. I typically didn't work Saturdays, so I agreed. Then, our high school band director announced we had the biggest marching band competition of the year on that same day. Suddenly, I couldn't cover the shift. I called everyone to see if they would fill in. It was Saturday night, and I could find nobody. When I called the new store manager who had only been there a few weeks, I explained it to him. He told me to either find someone or show up. It was my responsibility. I had just called every employee. It wasn't happening. I called the shift manager and told him the situation. When I told him I wouldn't be there, he told me to not worry about it. They could handle it without me. The band won the competition and it was a great day. On Sunday, I go to the store and work my regular shift. At the end of the night, the manager calls me into the office. He asks me why I didn't show up on Saturday. I explain what he already knows. The manager then tells me that he is letting me go due to my lack of musical knowledge. It was the first time I got fired. THE NEXT DOOR OPENS I'm in my drafting class the next day. It was part of my journey to become an architect. My teacher Mr. Weaver comes over to tell me he received a call from a local drafting firm. The owner is looking for a draftsman and wants Weaver to send his best draftsman. Weave asks if I'm interested. When I say yes, he gives me the guy's number and tells me to go see him after school. That afternoon, I was offered a job as a draftsman making nearly twice as much as I was making at the record store. I would start the next Monday. Embrace change when it comes. You never know what opportunity is around the corner. THE LESSONS OF CHANCES The next lesson is take chances and follow your heart. Embrace your passion. I worked for that drafting firm for two-and-a-half years. It grew from the two of us to hiring 3 other draftsman. Then, the drafting firm closed. The owner was taking a job with one of our clients to become their in-house drafting department. I was out of a job again. One Saturday I was hanging around the house when the phone rang. It was my brother's boss. My brother Keith worked at a radio station in town running the board. Keith and I both worked with the station manager at the local roller skating rink. Boss needed Keith to fill in for some shifts, but he wasn't home. Boss told me he needed help at the radio station and wondered if I was interested. I was a broke college student at the time and needed some cash. Radio always sounded fun as well. So, I took the job and started on my journey into radio. ARCHITECTURE VS RADIO During the next year, my love for radio grew while my passion for architecture was fading. I started considering switching my degree from architecture to journalism. After taking a few journalism classes, I realized I knew most of it by already working in a radio station. So, I finished the architecture degree and stayed in radio. Radio was my new passion. It started out with me working overnights. I had two other jobs just to pay rent and make ends meet. But I was having a blast. My parents thought I lost my mind. All that work in architecture just to work overnights on the radio. It wasn't until 7 years later when I started programming the radio station that my dad finally accepted my career. When things got tough, I had to fight the doubters and follow my passion. Trust your heart. Take chances. Embrace your passion. Follow your intuition. THE LESSONS IN CONNECTIONS The next lesson is all about connection. You never know who you might meet and where you might meet them. A few years later I was in a temporary radio gig. I was hired to keep the station on the tracks while the owner sold it. After the sale, I was out of a job. So, I left radio in January and accepted a job as an audio producer at a teleservices company. I was producing the audio on those phone lines that you call to activate your bank card. During that job, I met the woman who would become my wife and change my world. Jen was an account manager at the company. After starting in January, our first date was in March. She accepted another job and left the company in April. By July, I was back in radio at a new station. Jen and I worked with each other for less than four months. But, it was the start of our lifetime together. You never know who you might meet and where you might meet them. As you're on your journey, never say no to a mic. You never know who is in the audience and what might develop. QUALITY The final lesson is it's not the size of the audience that matters. It's the quality of those in the audience. I had just launched my Podcast Profits Concierge program. This allows coaches to show up and perform while leaving all the production, editing, and social medial asset creation up to my team. We do it all for them. The program also involves one-on-one coaching with me. It's a very powerful program and I was ready to take information experts to the next level. A few clients had enrolled as I was looking for stages and other opportunities to be in front of clients who could hire me. MASTERMIND INVITE I was invited to speak to a mastermind. As I just mentioned, never say no to a mic. She was a friend, and that gave me even more reason to say yes. When I showed up to the mastermind call, there were six people in the room. Not as many as I had hoped, but I came to deliver. We had a great conversation. I gave it my all and talked about what I love about podcasting. Later that day, I got an email from one of the people in the room. He wanted to discuss launching a podcast. On the call, I told him all about Podcast Fast Blueprint to launch the show. Then we got into Podcast Profits Concierge and all it could do for him and his business. By the end of the call, I had created a custom program for him that eventually turned him into a $20,000 client. It isn't the size of the audience that matters. Be more concerned about the quality of the audience. When you compare your downloads to others, keep this in mind. Not all podcast audiences are created equal. Fill your audience with quality prospects and turn them into valuable clients. YOUR STRATEGY These four lessons can help keep proper perspective when you're ready to throw in the towel. When your podcast isn't helping you grow your business, it can be frustrating. You're not alone. Many podcasters tell me they simply can't continue to dump time and energy into a podcast that isn't producing results. That's where I can help you.
