Mike and I have quite the interesting story behind our friendship. I was traveling through Colombia with friends several years ago and ended up in a hostel in Cartagena where I met Mike and several others from California. Immediately connected that coincidence and after a couple shots of aguardiente we were friends. Mike is a civil engineer who has spent the last few years doing disaster recovery work around the Caribbean, first for the Red Cross and now for an organization called All Hands And Hearts. Most of it has focused on rebuilding homes after hurricanes and we talk about what that entails, the hardships he has to see but also the great happiness he gets from being able to help those who most need it. Roabel started on his own personal fitness journey several years ago and was looking for a way to connect with his friends during the uncertainties of the pandemic. In comes the idea for VWS(Virtual Workout Squad), originally just a couple of friends following a workout video on youtube turned into a community that stretches all over the world working out 7 days a week. All gas no breaks. Jay Johnson is an assistant basketball coach for Southern Utah Women's Basketball and a great friend of mine from my time at Saint Mary's College. Jay and I became close friends through soccer and our time working with a non profit called Here For Kids. He's and incredible human being with a big heart and love of life/ people. Casey is North Carolina based graphic and web designer. When she's not working on design projects, you can catch her outside somewhere doing something active. She grew up battling severe anxiety most of her life and found the most relief and joy through working out and staying active which has turned into a mental health and fitness journey for herself. Karim is a great friend of mine and a BIG reason why Chasestories Chats started! After working in tech after college he decided he needed to step back and reevaluate what direction he wanted to go with his life and went backpacking for 6 months around the world. During his time he discovered so many lessons and the importance of being vulnerable and pushing your comfort zones. The book focuses on the healing journey from suffering to fulfillment. Marcos is an athlete who discovered running, specifically marathon running, later on in life and has become completely dedicated to the sport. Through running he has discovered not only the physical benefits but the mental ones as well and hopes to encourage his friends and community to pick up the sport as well. You don't need a whole bunch of equipment to start running. Just a pair of shoes and a desire to push yourself and your limits in order to become the best you can be. Paighton King is a pediatric nurse, graduate student, and world traveler. Tina is a fiction writer, traveler, and teacher. I've had the pleasure of joining Tina on some of her adventures traveling through Colombia and she's one of the coolest people I have ever met. Her story "New Years in La Calera," published in PEN America Best Debut Short Stories 2018 [originally in EPOCH Literary Magazine (Vol. 66 No. 3)], won the PEN/Robert J Dau Short Story Prize for Emerging Writers. She recently earned her M.A. in Creative Writing at UC Davis (2019), and is at work on a collection of short stories and a novel. What can't I say about Diego. Besides being one of my best friends and a founding member of the #Flatizzas, Diego is one of those incredible people who can juggle several things at the same time and execute all of them better than anyone else. He is the Executive Director of the nonprofit Here for Kids International, a team lead for the California Association of Student Councils, a motivational speaker, and also helps manage his families' online business which sells South American products.
