Mack McKelvey, Founder and CEO of SalientMG, joins me to explain why "being uncomfortable" has been a great recipe for success throughout her award-winning career in tech and marketing. With remarkable candor, Mack reveals how disruption propelled her from big tech brands like Lucent, Verisign, and British Telecom to the startup world, where she mastered being an "intrapreneur" before launching her own ventures. While I almost give away what my initials (E.B.) stand for, Mack shares the fun but sobering story behind her own name change—and a realization about "what's in a name." It definitely ties in with how it took a name change for this powerful woman, appropriately featured during Women's History Month, to go to game changer. She ultimately created SalientMG in order to offer "the kind of firm I could never find when I was on the inside"—a company staffed entirely with senior practitioners who understand the daily realities of startup marketing. This same commitment drove yet another one of her startups just last year, but this time in the form of a community appropriately called "StartUp Marketer," that democratizes access to marketing expertise with everything from templates to live advisors. As a fellow podcaster (host of "The Cred"), Mack generously shares both professional insights and personal stories—from her surprising celebrity encounters (think Jude Law to Dave Grohl!) to how her move from Manhattan to Vermont during the pandemic influenced her perspective on work and life. Throughout our conversation, Mack emphasizes what she's learned throughout her career: the importance of staying relevant and adapting to change. Read everything! She also emphasizes that successful marketing isn't just about tactics—it's about understanding the people behind every decision and fostering diverse teams to help drive meaningful outcomes. She's an advocate for underrepresented voices and speaks passionately about her mission to create platforms for women, LGBTQ+, neurodivergent and people of color -- evident from her work, for example, with the non-profit, Creative Spirit -- and giving all people more visibility. "I had a real challenge with representation in technology. I felt like there were a lot of people that we weren't hearing from. But man did they have great ideas and I wanted to build a platform or a way to help these folks get out in market in a meaningful way." Whether you're a startup founder, a marketing professional, or simply someone interested in authentic leadership, Mack's journey from "accidental" tech marketer to industry game-changer offers invaluable insights about intention, representation, and the courage to create what doesn't yet exist. Two local filmmakers set out to tell stories about Harrisburg that transcend boundaries of race, class, gender and geography. The result is the film River City Stories, which is screening this week at the West Shore Theater in New Cumberland. WITF's Rachel McDevitt spoke with the film's creators Paul Hood and Wallace McKelvey. According to McKelvey, he loved the City of Harrisburg, and wanted to portray that in a film. “I just feel like there's so much more to the city that people think is there. And with River City Stories, we're trying to show the world that there's more to Harrisburg than just a downtown core, said McKelvey. Hood echoed McKelvey’s sentiments on his love for the area. “There's so much vibrancy here that we don't always appreciate, whether you're a local or whether you're an outsider, you don't fully comprehend the complexity of our culture, the way that it can at once be segregated, but also mix together and overlap. And it's reflected in the way the film is structured, where you have a really diverse group of characters who kind of ebb and flow through these stories where one character will be the protagonist of one and then show up later in the story that has a different perspective, different lead character, because we all interact. We all share this space together. And I don't think we always appreciate that, “said Hood. The idea for River City Stories was born in the middle of the COVID pandemic, where folks were socially distanced and isolated. “We just talked, we just talked, and all these ideas came, and we had a really cool like system. So, we would sit and just have a conversation and then we'd pick out the things that were interesting in those conversations and we'd task each other with going off and working on a script. So, we would do that, we did that for like almost a year and by the next time we met like a year later, “said Hood. The film is screening Friday, March 7 and Sunday, March 9th at the West Shore Theater in New Cumberland. It will also be shown at Zootropolis in Lancaster on May 16th and 18th. In this episode, I sat down with Carol McKelvey, an experienced therapist and family mediator, to explore the complex issue of parental alienation from her unique vantage point. Carol, who has spent much of her career in behavioral health, transitioned into mediation to support families through divorce with an insightful, balanced approach. We delved into the subtler tactics of parental alienation—behaviors that often go unnoticed in court or mediation. Carol shared her perspective on how even subtle actions, like undermining the other parent's decisions in front of children, constitute alienation, and why these less overt forms can be particularly damaging. She offered practical advice for parents facing alienation on how to effectively advocate for their interests in mediation, along with insights on how the dynamic shifts when legal counsel is present. Throughout, Carol emphasized her role in restoring harmony when tensions run high, underscoring the importance of mediators in helping families reach resolutions that serve the best interests of everyone, especially the children. In 1967, the US government funded the National Theatre of the Deaf, a groundbreaking rehabilitation initiative employing deaf actors. This project aligned with the postwar belief that transforming bodies, minds, aesthetics, and institutions could liberate disabled Americans from economic reliance on the state, and demonstrated the growing belief that performance could provide job opportunities for people with disabilities. Disability Works: Performance After Rehabilitation (NYU Press, 2024) offers an original cultural history of disability and performance in modern America, exploring rehabilitation's competing legacies. The book highlights an unexpected alliance of rehabilitation professionals, deaf teachers, policy makers, disability activists, queer artists, and religious leaders who championed performance's rehabilitative potential. At the same time, some disabled artists imagined a different political itinerary for theatrical practice. Rather than acquiescing to the terms of productive citizenship, these artists recuperated rehabilitation as a creative resource for imagining and building a world beyond work. Using previously unexplored archives, Disability Works portrays the history of disabled Americans' performance labor as both a national aspiration and a national problem. The book reveals how disabled artists and activists ingeniously used rehabilitative resources to fuel their performance practices, breaking free from the grasp of rehabilitation and fostering more just institutions. From state-funded “sign-mime” to Black modern dance, community theatre to Stanislavskian actor training, speculative infrastructures to epistolary performance, Disability Works recovers an expansive repertoire of aesthetic and infrastructural investigations into the terms of how disability works in modern American culture. Today, I have the absolute pleasure of sharing my conversation with the one and only Douglas McKelvey. Douglas is a songwriter, author, and liturgy writer extraordinaire. I have never met someone like Douglas. His gift with words and passion for Christ cultivates a visceral invitation to be more present in this life, to find your fight again as you walk this weary way, and speaks to our hope of the next life with Jesus. Douglas shares with me his story of what led him to Nashville, TN, his journey from songwriting to fiction writing and the idea of unpacking his belief that every moment in this life is sacramental, and sometimes words can help us to be present. Thus, the birth of Every Moment Holy. There are now 3 volumes of Every Moment Holy, each unique in how they offer opportunities for us to be awake to the moments we are living in. Whether that is something as simple as waking up in the morning and enjoying a sunrise, something unique like beginning a novel, or the keeping of bees, holiday celebrations, to going on a trip, there is a liturgy for it in one of these volumes. Many of these liturgies, especially in volume two, also hold space for the hard and holy moments around grief and lament, and even for those facing the end of their life. I cannot begin to express how much many of these liturgies have ministered to me as we've walked through many losses, and the anniversary of losses, over the last few years. As it is that time of year, Douglas and I also talk about how to embrace the season of advent, which asks our hearts to prepare Christ room, but also to ask “where is our hope?” as we wait for Jesus to come back again. He even blesses us with a reading of his “A Liturgy for the Start of the Christmas Season.” I hope all of this conversation serves as a blessing for you in this season. I hope it is serves as an invitation to prepare Him room not just for now, but for always. And I hope and pray, it reminds you that you are not alone in this life, no matter how it may seem, and Jesus is coming back for us. You matter. Your story matters. Merry Christmas! How do you find the words to pray when you are in the middle of loss and suffering? How do mark the holy moments, both big and small, in a special way? Author Doug McKelvey and artist Ned Bustard have collaborated on three volumes of Every Moment Holy, books filled with liturgies to help people find the words in the joyful, the mundane and the most difficult moments of life. In their second volume, Every Moment Holy: Death, Grief, and Hope they offer prayers for those who are in the middle of life's most painful seasons. From helping those who are caregivers to offering words for those who are facing their own mortality, their book combines both visual art and words when it is hard to know what to even say. Ned would eventually experience the art he was creating to help others serve as a balm to his own heartache in the loss of his wife. It was through the power of Doug's writing and Ned's creative process that Ned felt the power of this work in his own personal pain. In this episode, guest co-host Eric Schumacher discusses with Doug and Ned how liturgies can help us find the words to pray, the creative process in creating meaningful work, and what happens when what you create for others ends up ministering to you. If you've ever found it hard to pray in either the moments of grief or in the everyday moments, this conversation will teach you the power of liturgy in our journey as believers. A vivid narrative history, packed with first-hand accounts, of the US Eighth Air Force's VIII Fighter Command from its foundation in 1942 through to its victory in the skies over Nazi Germany. On August 7, 1942, two events of major military importance occurred on separate sides of the planet. In the South Pacific, the United States went on the offensive, landing the First Marine Division at Guadalcanal. In England, 12 B-17 bombers of the new Eighth Air Force's 97th Bombardment Group bombed the Rouen–Sotteville railroad marshalling yards in France. While the mission was small, the aerial struggle that began that day would ultimately cost the United States more men killed and wounded by the end of the war in Europe than the Marines would lose in the Pacific War.Clean Sweep is the story of the creation, development and operation of the Eighth Air Force Fighter Command and the battle to establish daylight air superiority over the Luftwaffe so that the invasion of Europe could be successful.Thomas McKelvey Cleaver has had a lifelong interest in the history of the fighter force that defeated the Luftwaffe over Germany. He has collected many first-hand accounts from participants over the past 50 years, getting to know pilots such as the legendary “Hub” Zemke, Don Blakeslee and Chuck Yeager, as well as meeting and interviewing leading Luftwaffe pilots Adolf Galland, Gunther Rall and Walter “Count Punski” Krupinski. This story is told through accounts gathered from both sides. Thomas McKelvey Cleaver has been a published writer for the past 40 years, with his most recent work being the best-selling Osprey titles MiG Alley (2019), I Will Run Wild (2020), Under the Southern Cross (2021), The Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club (2021), Going Downtown (2022), The Cactus Air Force (2022) alongside the late Eric Hammel, and most recently Clean Sweep (2023). She provided research materials for and appeared in the 1983 documentary, The New Age, Pathway to Paradise. produced by WDFC Christian television in Chicago, Illinois. She has been an investigator for the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) and has served as the MUFON State Section Director for Santa Clara County in California. Sylvia is the author of Storm on the Horizon: The New Age, UFOs, and the Cosmic Christ, which we discussed on her first appearance on hour show. She is a former Petty Officer in the United States Naval Reserve Hospital Corps and served on active duty during Operation Desert Storm. She lives with her husband in Northern California. This Episode brought to you by: Our Premium Subscribers or “Seekers”Troy L.Stephanie L.Gary G.Show Notes:MUFON -The “Accidental Truth – UFO Revelations” documentary to be released on April 18, 2023. Has an incredible list of respected individuals, from a Congressman to Pentagon officials, a Stanford Scientist, and well-known researchers making comments and confirming the existence of UFO and the evidence to back it up.The Government is in a precarious position officially have a full disclosure of UFOs. I will explain.Ways contact could be made. And what would make contact with aliens official.Current types of UFOs being reported.Impact UFOs would have on the world.Would UFOs have an impact on international agencies such as the UN and WEF?Are we in a preparatory stage to accept UFOs and their occupants. How could UFOs play into the End Times? Can UFOs be part of a great “deception”? You shared with me the link to a disturbing article in Scientific American where vaccine history will soon be available by:“embedding the record directly into the skin. Along with the vaccine, a child would be injected with a bit of dye that is invisible to the naked eye but easily seen with a special cell-phone filter, combined with an app that shines near-infrared light onto the skin.” Do you see this as a possible way of determining who has not taken the mark? How could the mark of the beast play into this? Takeaway:It is very evident to us that UFOs are going to somehow play into the last days and the coming of the antichrist, yet strong delusion that will cause the world to worship the beast seems impossible today. What if a global phenomenon of “aliens” alleging to be our ancient ancestors were to suddenly appear with advanced knowledge and technology? Then such a scenario seems very likely, causing all the world to abandon religion and tradition to unite under a single savior king. We contend the government is aware of and working in collusion with the demonic spiritual entities behind this deception!
