When everything is perfectly organized—routes mapped, fuel stops planned, meals and beds guaranteed—it feels effortless. But the truth is, no matter how tidy the plan, the real world always gets a vote. On short rides, those small interruptions are easy to patch over. Stretch the miles across countries and weeks on the road, though, and the little things start to compound. That's when the first casualty is usually the plan—and what comes next is called the adventure. In this 2017 story, a dozen experienced riders set out to cross South America from Cartagena to Ushuaia, equipped with skills, support vehicles, and a clear plan. But tropical rain, border red tape, shock absorbers that cried uncle, and Patagonian winds forced them to adapt. The journey didn't unfold the way they mapped it—but that's the point. What carries a long trip isn't a perfect plan; it's the flexibility to rewrite it.

Sometimes a small step in the wrong direction can be magnified by factors such as greed and willful moral blindness. This was the case seventy years before St. Peter Claver was born to a farming family outside of Barcelona, Spain in 1580. King Ferdinand of Spain authorized the purchase of 250 African slaves in Lisbon for his territories in New Spain. One hundred years later, 10,000 African slaves were arriving every year to the New Kingdom of Granada, today known as Columbia. The king's small decision to supposedly help farmers and landowners in New Spain meet their need for laborers allowed the slave trade to grow to epidemic proportions throughout the Americas. St. Peter's life's work as a Jesuit priest was helping the men and women who arrived sick, exhausted, and maltreated to the port city of Cartagena. He would meet the ships upon their arrival and go down into the holds where the human cargo was packed tightly together. It is estimated that one third of the men and women died in transit. Peter would carry medicine, food, bread, and lemons to those who survived. He attended to their human needs first and then, over time, tried his best to meet their spiritual needs. Peter also preached the Gospel message to the merchants, sailors, and ship owners. He tried to impress upon them that we are all human beings and that we have a common need to be treated with dignity and respect. When he visited the plantations where the African slaves were working, he would stay with them rather than in the comfortable homes of the landowners. He preached in the city squares, country areas, and was often among the sick in the hospitals. Fellow Jesuit Fr. John Hardon could have been reflecting on the life of Peter Claver when he wrote: “Love is shown more in deeds than in words. Love does not mean that I like doing what I'm doing, love means that I do it, and the doing is your love.” Over the course of his life, the conservative estimate is that Peter baptized 300,000 people - and he continued his instructions after they were baptized by distributing holy pictures and having translators help him to preach. He heard 5,000 confessions on a yearly basis. It should be no surprise that his last years were filled with ill health. Unable to leave his room, his community assigned an ex-slave to attend to his needs. Unfortunately, this man mistreated Fr. Claver and stole his food. Peter did not complain, seeing his ill treatment as a penance for his sins. When he died on September 8, 1654, word spread quickly. People came from all over the countryside to visit his room, which was soon stripped of everything that might be considered a relic. His life was such a heroic example of the Christian praxis of love and the exercise of human rights that September 9th, the day after Peter's death, is celebrated today in Columbia as Human Rights Day. St. Peter Claver, friend of the marginalized and oppressed, pray for us. Blessings, Fr. Kevin MacDonald, C.Ss.R.
Tuesday of the 23rd Week in Ordinary Time Memorial of St. Peter Claver, 1581-1654; as a Jesuit, he sailed to Cartagena , a port city in the Caribbean, where the slave trade flourished; as soon as a slave ship entered the port, Peter Claver moved into its infested hold to minister to the ill-treated and exhausted passengers; after the slaves were herded off of the ship, Peter Claver plunged in among them with medicines, food, bread, brandy, lemons, and tobacco; with the help of interpreters, he gave them basic instruction and assured them of their human dignity; he instructed and baptized an estimated 200,000 slaves; after a long illness, he died in 1854 Office of Readings and Morning Prayer for 9/9/25 Gospel: Luke 6:12-19
Bautizó a casi trescientos mil esclavos.

In this episode of the Canary Cast, Florian Hagenbuch, Co-Founder and General partner at Canary, sits down with Jose Gedeon, co-founder and CEO of Cobre, a Colombian fintech building the real-time B2B payments and cross-border infrastructure powering finance teams across Latin America. From his early fascination with M-Pesa’s case at the University of Pennsylvania, to failed attempts at building his own mobile money business in Colombia, a stint as a consultant at McKinsey New York, and a role at Oyo in Mexico, José shares how each chapter of his journey shaped the vision for Cobre. What started as white-label wallets for meal vouchers during the pandemic evolved into Colombia’s leading real-time B2B payments platform, now expanding rapidly into Mexico and cross-border flows. During the episode, José reflects on the unique challenges of scaling a fintech in LatAm, the pivotal customer moments that unlocked entirely new business lines, and the ambition of turning Cobre into the default infrastructure for payments across the region. In this episode, we dive into: From White-Label Wallets to Infrastructure: How Cobre pivoted from building digital wallets for meal vouchers into real-time B2B payments and treasury management. Cross-Border Breakthroughs: The customer emergency that sparked Cobre’s cross-border product and how it led to a new revenue line. The Role of Stablecoins: Why stablecoins are becoming increasingly relevant in illiquid or high-cost currency corridors like Colombia, Turkey, and Argentina. Scaling in Mexico: How Cobre reached $100M in monthly volume in only 8 months in Mexico—10x faster than in Colombia. Vision for the Future: Why Jose believes it’s still “day zero” for Cobre and how the company aims to become the de facto B2B payment infrastructure for LatAm. Founder Lessons: Biggest mistakes, wins, and the cultural values that define the Cobre team. Whether you’re a founder, operator, or fintech enthusiast, this episode offers a masterclass in product pivots, client-focused culture, scaling infrastructure in emerging markets, and building with ambition in one of the most dynamic regions in the world. Tune in to hear how Cobre is not only modernizing payments in Colombia and Mexico, but also shaping the future of financial infrastructure across Latin America. Guest: Jose GedeonJose is the co-founder and CEO of Cobre, a fintech modernizing B2B payments and cross-border infrastructure in Latin America. Read, Write, Own by Chris DixonTranscrição do Episódio em Português: Hoje, estamos movimentando cerca de 3% do PIB da Colômbia dentro da Cobre.É um número muito grande.Mas, ao mesmo tempo, também é pequeno.Copo meio cheio, copo meio vazio. As empresas estavam forçadas a mudar. José:Sim, me formei em 2018.

Hi there. I'm Dr. Mary Travelbest, coming to you from a recent trip, on a 90-day solo journey around the world. Listener Story Spotlight Alina, whom I met in Toronto and who hosted me for my final four nights, is trying to travel to Seattle this week, but she's been affected by the Air Canada airline strike. She's a great traveler who has visited Japan, Spain, and many European countries. She was an excellent Servas host. Look up Servas if you want to encourage world peace with cultural exchange. Quick-fire FAQ: The FAQ for today is: What was my favorite place during my 90-day journey? It's what I get asked nearly every day. I don't want to leave anyone out, so I usually say, 'Right here is my favorite place.' Right now, I'm home, so that's my favorite place. It's usually the NEXT trip that I'll be taking. My next trip is for work, to Las Vegas, so that's not a favorite. I can stay here for up to two nights, and then I need to get out. However, after that, it's off to Chicago soon. That will be a favorite this fall. 60-second Travelbest confidence challenge Walk outside. Close your eyes and stop where you are. Listen to the sounds you hear. Did you catch every sound? Make a list in your mind. Continue walking and focus on what you hear. The sounds of nature or the city are there, but maybe you haven't been listening. Go ahead and do this once a week. That's your challenge. If you like today's Confidence Challenge, Chapter 1 of my 5 Steps series book A dives deeper—link in description.” See Book A for addressing all of these items. https://www.5stepstosolotravel.com/ Destination Deep‑Dive Today's special destination is: A summary of my 90-day trip. Part One I began my trip in South America on May 13, 2025. I charted a course to go around the world from north to south. I flew to Chicago to begin my trip and then went to Bogota, Colombia, Cartagena, and finally Medellin. I spent a total of four weeks in South America, traveling through four countries, each for one week. Some of the highlights of South America would include fantastic artwork in downtown Medellin and riding on their very sophisticated tram system. In Cartagena, I had the opportunity to explore the old town and the city walls, as well as spend a day at Isla Blanca, a resort. My second week was spent in Ecuador, where I spent several days on the island of Isabela in the Galapagos. I saw many natural wonders here on this small island. I explored the tunnels and had the opportunity to swim with sea turtles during this trip. I also saw many lizards and other unusual creatures. After arriving in Peru, I landed in Lima and then traveled to Cusco by plane, where I spent a few days acclimating to the high altitude. I spent one 19-hour day in Machu Picchu, leaving at 3 AM and arriving at about 11 PM. That was quite an adventure, and it was a beautiful day at that. I felt that I got to know the city of Lima after visiting it for the second time at the end of May, when I spent a week in Brazil. I first arrived in Rio de Janeiro and visited the Christ the Redeemer statue. I then spent several days exploring the city before heading to the sister city across the bay in Nero, where I enjoyed the locals and the beaches. I then flew to São Paulo. I explored this vast metropolis, one of the largest cities I've ever seen. From there I flew to South Africa via Angola, and when I arrived in Cape Town, I rented a car and drove on the left side of the road for the first time. I explored the Garden Route for several days before returning to Cape Town, situated at the southernmost tip of Africa. After Cape Town, I flew to Johannesburg on another airline. I was fortunate to visit the Apartheid Museum and the homes of two Nobel Peace Prize winners, all in the same neighborhood. This is my second trip to Africa, so I was glad to see a different part of it this time. I'll finish up my summary in the next episode, so stay tuned. Smart Move and Slip-up pairings One of my slip-ups on this trip was losing my phone. I lost it while I was entering the CN Tower in Toronto, one of the city's most popular tourist attractions. I was going through the X-ray machine, and they asked me to take off my vest. They also asked me to remove items from the pockets in the vest. They removed my phone from my pocket and dropped it in the basket when I was collecting my vest. I forgot to put the phone back in my pocket and proceeded to enter the exhibit for about five minutes. When I went to take a photo of an item on the tour, I couldn't find my phone I knew where it was so I turned around retrace my steps, made sure that they were gonna give me a reentry went into their highly secure staffing room and retrieved my phone immediately so don't slip up like I did and leave your phone behind when you're going through security, even if you seem to be a little bit nervous when you're going through there take a minute and make sure you have all your things. The smart move is to take a breath whenever you are going through a security situation. 60-second confidence challenge Here's my challenge for you. Can you pack all of your toiletries and one small cube that will help build your confidence in many ways? Don't forget to zip up any items that could leak, especially if you have bug or mosquito protection, such as DEET, which should be double-bagged. Resources Roundup One of the good places to find resources is with your government agencies, such as the US consulate. Don't hesitate to check those out before you take a big trip. Take away mantra and goodbye. My takeaway for today is that traveling in one direction means that you don't have to double back and return to the same destination. Making a loop is a more efficient way to travel, draw a circle, and see where you can go on that journey, instead of just coming back.

There was so much to unpack with Wes about his incredible career in law enforcement and his accomplishments off duty that this is my first three-part interview. Thanks for sticking around until the end! Honestly, I could have talked to Wes all day. I will definitely have him back on the show in the future. Here's a quick bio of just some of Wes’s accomplishments. Wes became a Hernando County Sheriff’s Deputy in 1988. As a deputy, Wes served as a S.W.A.T. lead, having completed the FBI S.W.A.T. school in 1995. Wes was a Defensive Tactics Instructor, anti-crime and property Detective, and earned the Florida Medal of Valor in 1996 for his heroism by disregarding his own safety, running into an apartment fire, saving multiple lives, and Mittens the cat. In 1998, he was hired by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Wes had a 23-year career with the DEA and has been stationed in Field Divisions such as: St. Louis, Miami, Chicago, D.C., Los Angeles, and internationally in cities such as Guatemala City, Guatemala, Caracas, Venezuela, Cartagena, Colombia, and Bogota, Colombia. During this time, he was representing the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in positions such as: supervisory special agent, country attaché, assistant country attaché, Deputy Section Chief, Assistant to the Global Deputy Chief of Operations, and Assistant Special Agent in Charge. Wes was paralyzed in an auto accident where a drunk driver and career criminal had been at fault. Fortunately, he recovered from his spinal cord injury (C5/6) fracture and went back to being a DEA agent. The suspect later absconded and was on the run for 23 years only to be captured in 2024. He was given probation for 6 months by a local judge in Minnesota. From 2012 to 2015, Wes was assigned to the Central Intelligence Agency as an Assignee to various locations in the Western Hemisphere, conducting various classified activities on behalf of the DEA while embedded with the CIA. He has worked with some of the most prestigious law enforcement and military agencies, conducting operations and training modules, with the FBI, Secret Service, Defense Intelligence Service, US Army Special Forces, and Navy Seals. As a DEA agent, rising through the ranks to Assistant Special Agent in Charge in Los Angeles, he was the division's Strike Force Commander, where he oversaw global money-laundering investigations, High Value Mexican Cartel Investigation, and led his teams in pursuit of some of the largest cases on the globe. Thanks again for sticking around for the conclusion of this amazing interview. I think we covered a lot of ground and went places that I didn’t foresee. But that’s the fun of running a podcast. Please enjoy the conclusion of my interview with Wes Tabor. In today’s episode, we discuss: · What was the motivation for informants working with the DEA in Venezuela? · Hezbollah and Hamas in Venezuela? · The TDA gang that started in Venezuela and them spreading. This gang and others are spreading into the United States, and the influence they have and how they gain traction in America. · What are the most dangerous gangs we should be the most aware of, and what can be done to stop them? · The U.S./Mexican border has been a hot button for a while now and is in the news all the time. What are his thoughts, and how easy has it been and is it for these gangs to come into our country illegally? · Gangs communicating and recruiting through encrypted social media. · International gangs using cryptocurrencies. · I don’t think the average American understands these gangs and what they are capable of. I think about the murder rates you had in your book in Jamaica and Central America, 2000-2017: 2.5 million murders, 2/3 of the world’s murders. Should we be worried that this will spill over into our country? · In Milwaukee, we had the Latin (Spanish Cobras, Latin Kings, Brown Pride, Mexican Posse, and La Familia) and Black gangs (Gangster Disciples, Black Gangster Disciples, Kia Boys, and Vice Lords). The Latin gangs were much more organized, and the OGs didn’t give up much to the cops. They were busted with RICO cases, but all that did was bring in the black gangs where there was a void. It feels like a war that never ends. What can be done to stop it? · His book, Infiltrate America - Blood Routes and the Rise of Latin American Gangs. Why write it? · How painful was it for him to write this book? From personal experience, I know this can put PTSD into overdrive, reliving some ugly stuff. · Post-retirement from the DEA. What does he miss the most/least from LE? All of this and more on today’s episode of the Cops and Writers podcast.
“They will never see their gold again, just as they do not see their own ears.”Josef StalinGold's strength is that its value exists in and of itself. It's nobody else's liability. Unlike money in the bank or a bond, it carries no promise from a third party, and its value is not dependent on the creditworthiness of any issuer or guarantor. Hand it to someone else and its value is transferred. It is a “bearer” asset, effectively owned by whoever has possession of it. For this reason gold has been the target of many a heist. Quickly resmelt it, and its provenance is very hard to prove. So there is one obvious problem with gold: that is keeping it safe. It's all very well having a pot of gold, but if somebody comes along and takes it from you, as Alexander did from the Persians, or the Conquistadors from the Incas, then you're left with nothing at all. When the Spanish Civil War broke out in 1936, the Soviet Union, under Joseph Stalin, supported the Spanish Republican government. The Nazis supported their opponents, the revolutionary fascist forces led by General Franco. At the time Spanish gold reserves, some 635 tonnes, were the fourth largest in the world.Much of that treasure had been accumulated during WWI, when Spain had stayed neutral. Selling stuff to the British seems to have been the really big earner: 70% of Spanish gold holdings were British sovereigns. With Franco just 20 miles from the capital, the Republicans were on the verge of defeat. Never mind the fascists, there were also rumours that Catalan separatists had hatched plans to take the gold from Madrid to Barcelona. All that gold was at risk.Finance minister, Juan Negrín, and Prime Minister, Francisco Largo Caballero, leant on President Azaña to sign a secret decree to move the gold - some 10,000 cases - to a place “which in his [Negrín's] opinion offers the best security”. Azaña signed and the gold was moved, starting the next day, to Cartajena on the south coast, as far from Franco's armies as possible. The Spanish soldiers who transported the cases thought they were lifting munitions. A fifth of it was then shipped to Marseille where it was traded for French francs, which the Republicans used to fund their side of the war. The rest, 510 tonnes, would be sent to Joseph Stalin in Moscow for safekeeping.Even if Bolshevik sympathisers, what were Negrín and Caballero thinking? The Russians had already demonstrated that they had no qualms about seizing other people's gold. In 1916, the Romanian government sent its treasury of 91 tonnes of gold to Tsarist Russia for safekeeping, worried that it was vulnerable to the Axis powers when Romania had just joined WWI on the side of the Entente. Shortly afterwards, during the Great October Revolution, communists, led by Lenin, seized power, sequestered the gold and refused to give it back. Though small amounts were returned in 1935, 1956, and 2008, “as a gesture of goodwill”, the large majority was retained. As you can imagine, it has been something of a sore spot in diplomatic relations between the two nations ever since. It seems Negrín and Caballero did not know the story. In any case, Caballero actually wrote to Stalin asking if he would “agree to the deposit of approximately 500 tonnes of gold.” Two days later, he got a reply from the Soviet leader, not previously known for his prompt responses. No surprise: Stalin would be “glad” to take the gold.Buying gold or silver to protect yourself in these ‘interesting' times? The bullion dealer I use and recommend is the Pure Gold Company. Pricing is competitive, quality of service is high. They deliver to the UK, the US, Canada and Europe or you can store your gold with them. More here.Alexander Orlov was the Russian agent in charge of transporting the booty. Negrín gave him fake documents to show he was an US official from the Bank of America, in case he should be stopped. Negrín, who, remember, was finance minister, had thought Bank of America was the US central bank. That would be the Federal Reserve. Russian agent Orlov didn't realise either. It's extraordinary.Four Russian ships came to Cartagena to collect the bounty, and the gold was loaded on. There was a discrepancy of 100 cases between Orlov and Spanish treasurer Mendez Aspe's number: Aspe said 7,800 cases, Orlov 7,900. Orlov said nothing. He reported the discrepancy to his superiors, who told him, “Do not worry about figures. Everything will be counted anew in Moscow. Do not mention your figure to anybody.” Aspe didn't even get a receipt off Orlov (who had been instructed not to give him one). “Don't worry, my friend,” said Orlov, “it will be issued by the State Bank of the Soviet Union, when everything is checked and weighed.” We will never know whether Orlov miscounted or whether those 100 boxes went missing. It took them three nights to load the four ships. The Russians then left Cartagena for Odessa in the Black Sea, escorted by the Spanish as far as Italy. From Odessa it was loaded onto a freight train bound for Moscow. "If all the boxes of gold that we piled up on the wharfs of Odessa were to be placed here side by side,” said one of the officials. “They would completely cover up the Red Square".When the gold arrived in Moscow, Stalin celebrated with a banquet at the Kremlin. “They will never see their gold again”, he laughed. “Just as they do not see their own ears.”The Spanish eventually got their receipt: for 5,619 standard cases and 126 damaged. Some distance below both Aspe and Orlov's figure. But three months later the Russians completed the audit, calculating that the shipments totalled 510 tonnes of gold coins and ingots, 90% pure, thus around 460 tonnes of pure gold. There were gold coins from across Europe and Latin America, especially those British sovereigns and Portuguese escudos, but also Spanish pesetas, French, Swiss and Belgian francs, German marks,, Russian rubles, Austrian schillings, Dutch guilders, and Mexican, Argentine and Chilean pesos. The numismatic value of the coins was higher than their gold content. The following year Spain met with a currency crisis. With exceptional chutzpah, even by the standards of politicians, Republicans blamed the inflation on the free market. Nothing to do with the absence of all that gold!Later, the Franco regime was happy to let the story of the "Moscow gold" stolen by Russia spread, as part of its anti-communist propaganda. And yet it appears sell orders from Negrín were actually carried out in 1937 and 1938, for which Spain received pounds, dollars and francs. Spain also received planes, tanks, machine guns, artillery, rifles, cartridges, food and fuel from Russia. The Soviets demanded some compensation for what they had sent during the war, but it's believed that aside from various expenses, the Soviets did not abuse their position and defraud the Spanish. Ultimately then, most of the gold went, one way or another, on the cost of the civil war. Such is the way with war. It is expensive. And just a couple or three years later, as Nazi forces advanced through Europe, the farce of transporting gold would be repeated many times over, and across the continent.Stories like this fill the pages of The Secret History of Gold (although this one didn't actually make the cut). The Secret History of Gold is available to pre-order at Amazon, Waterstones and all good bookshops. I hear the audiobook, read by me, is excellent. The book comes out on August 28. This is a public episode.
