Today's guest is someone whose story and message deeply touched me. As a volunteer clergy member at our local jail, I have the privilege of working one-on-one with inmates to help them discover hope, healing, and the belief that no matter what mistakes they've made, their past does not have to define their future.Recently, I attended a district conference with other volunteers and several former inmates who have completely turned their lives around. It was there that I had the privilege of hearing Tony Taylor speak and sing. His story was powerful, honest, heartbreaking, and inspiring—and I immediately thought, “More people need to hear Tony's story.”Tony shares his journey of growing up feeling like he didn't belong. Born to a Black father and Native American mother, he struggled deeply with identity, racism, bullying, and trauma from a very young age. His childhood was filled with instability, abuse, addiction, violence, abandonment, and unimaginable pain. He experienced sexual abuse as a child, exposure to drugs and domestic violence, and by his teenage years he was already battling alcoholism, drug addiction, and destructive coping mechanisms. In this episode, we talk openly about trauma, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), generational pain, and how unresolved wounds can shape behavior. Tony explains that while trauma does not excuse harmful actions, understanding the roots of pain can help us better understand ourselves and begin the healing process.Despite the chaos surrounding him, Tony graduated from high school, attended college, played football, and started a family. But the trauma he carried inside eventually caught up with him. In a tragic situation, Tony took another person's life and was sentenced to prison. What happened next is what makes Tony's story so remarkable. While in court, the victim's family challenged Tony to do something good with his life. Those words changed him. Instead of surrendering to hopelessness, Tony committed himself to growth, accountability, education, and personal transformation. During his 29 years in prison, he immersed himself in self-improvement programs, life skills classes, and college education. He eventually went from student to teacher, helping mentor and teach fellow inmates. He earned his bachelor's degree and is close to completing his master's degree. We also discuss the important distinction between guilt and shame, inspired by the work of Brené Brown. Guilt says, “I did something bad,” while shame says, “I am bad.” Shame leads to hopelessness, but healthy guilt can motivate change, growth, and accountability.Tony shares how difficult it is to pursue healing and self-improvement in prison, where negativity often dominates the environment. Yet he also shares how faith transformed his life. He credits God and the healing power of Jesus Christ with changing his heart, giving him hope, and teaching him humility, accountability, forgiveness, resilience, and love.Tony openly acknowledges the pain he caused and the years he spent in prison. But instead of wasting that time, he chose to become a better man. Today, he and his son are building a new future together through a fantasy sports business venture with the goal of creating positive impact and giving back to charitable causes like St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. One of Tony's favorite scriptures is Ephesians 3:20:“Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we can ask or imagine according to His power at work within us.”In closing, I shared a story from former prison warden Clinton Duffy. When one critic told him, “Leopards don't change their spots,” Duffy replied:“I don't work with leopards. I work with men, and men change every day.”This episode is a powerful reminder that no one is beyond hope, healing, redemption, or transformation. In This EpisodeHow childhood trauma and ACEs impact behaviorThe connection between pain, addiction, and destructive choicesGenerational trauma and breaking unhealthy cyclesThe difference between guilt and shameFaith, accountability, and personal transformationFinding purpose and healing after devastating mistakesEducation, mentorship, and growth in prisonWhy people are capable of real change and redemptionBuilding a meaningful future after prisonListen, Share, and SupportIf this episode resonated with you, please share it with someone who may need hope today.Be sure to subscribe, leave a rating and review, and help us spread more healing and inspiration to the world.Free Resource for HealingIf you're ready to release stress, calm your mind, and begin healing from within, visit:

In this episode of The Better Life, Dr. Pinkston sits down with Dr. Stephanie Byerly—an anesthesiologist, TedX speaker, and certified life and leadership coach—for a profound and eye-opening conversation about the hidden epidemics affecting women's health: unprocessed trauma, emotional numbness, and the exhausting treadmill of the "achiever identity." Dr. Byerly shares her powerful personal journey, from surviving a chaotic childhood and a traumatic marriage to a life-changing epiphany during a psychodrama workshop. She realized that she had spent her life emotionally numb, a trait that directly mirrored her career in anesthesia. Key Topics Discussed: The "UnNUM" Method: How Dr. Byerly helps high-achieving women move out of survival mode and reclaim their agency using cognitive thought models and somatic safety. The Midlife Awakening: Why women in their late 30s to 50s suddenly experience a "screaming soul" as hormonal shifts and self-actualization force them to confront years of shrinking to fit in. The Trapped Trauma & Autoimmunity Connection: A medical look at how chronic stress, high ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) scores, and stuffed-down emotions manifest as chronic pain, fatigue, and autoimmune conditions, a reality that both Dr. Pinkston and Dr. Byerly have personally navigated. The Narcissist Magnet: Why highly successful, brilliant women are uniquely targeted by narcissistic personalities, and how to heal and become "unstoppable" after breaking free. Dismantling the Patriarchy's Playbook: Understanding the socialization, "likability clauses," and external validation traps that keep women overworking at the expense of their own well-being. https://www.stephaniebyerly.com/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I'm back, hopefully for good this time. I've spent the last 7 months in therapy, a lot of therapy. I've learned a lot about how I show up in relationships, my flaws, missteps, short comings, whatever it is. But I've also discovered a lot of things I put up with due to it becoming my normal. Mental health is tricky and I don't have all the answers. Some days I feel like I'm Elle Woods, super intelligent, in a stable way. Other days I feel like Kanye West, super intelligent, in a not so stable way. I just know I'm on the right track. I hope whoever is listening can find comfort in knowing you're not alone in this life. Dating is hard. Mental health struggles are hard. Learning to be alone is hard. Send us Fan Mail“Why does it feel like we aren't healing?” “What actually works for healing trauma?” “Is my child's trauma un-solvable?” — Two weeks ago, we heard Marcia Earhart's story through adoption, parenting, loss, and healing from trauma. Today, Benoit Harpey and Brooke Lowry dive deeper in their conversation with Marcia, a trauma coach and mother, as they discuss how to practically parent through trauma to foster healing. Parenting through trauma, grief, and behavioral challenges can feel overwhelming, stagnant, and like a lost cause, but Marcia explains why it isn't. Marcia expands on the truth of trauma being something that happened, not who a child is; highlights the importance of consistency and routine in a child's life; and explains the importance of the right support system (and where to find it). She tells us that we will feel tired, overwhelmed, and hopeless, but that progress will come—we just have to keep on moving. If you're stretched, discouraged, or unsure how to help your child heal from trauma, this episode is for you. Healing is still possible, no matter how hopeless it seems. Take the first step by tuning in today.

International Conference “Jewish Immigration from Eastern Europe to Israel and Germany in the Light of the War in Ukraine (1991-2025). Narratives, Memory and Identity Formation” December 2025 in Munich. The Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has triggered one of the largest refugee crises in recent European history. Over 1.2 million Ukrainian citizens have received temporary protection in Germany, while a significant number of refugees—Jewish or of Jewish origin—have also sought refuge in Israel and received citizenship under the Law of Return. The experiences of Ukrainian Jews in the wake of the war offer an important lens through which to examine broader patterns of Jewish migration from Eastern Europe over the past four decades. This two-day interdisciplinary conference, organized by the Leonid Nevzlin Research Center for Russian and East European Jewry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Leibnitz Center for Contemporary History Potsdam and the Center for Israel Studies at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, aims to juxtapose two pivotal periods of Jewish migration to Israel and Germany—the post-Soviet 1990s and the post-2022 Ukrainian crisis. By bringing together scholars from the humanities and social sciences, the conference seeks to enrich our understanding of the shifting meanings of Jewish belonging, displacement, and diaspora in the 21st century. Through historical, sociological, and cultural analyses, we aim to build a comparative framework for analyzing Jewish migration in the context of political rupture, memory politics, and transnational identity formation.

She described her career transition from accounting to running a daycare, which she found fulfilling despite the challenges. Adele also mentioned her struggle with panic attacks and her decision to seek therapy, eventually leading her to write a book about behavior change and the human subconscious. She explained how she transformed her understanding of her brain's patterns and developed a technique involving four steps to address and rewire negative thought processes. They agreed on the potential benefits of using fMRI technology to study brain changes during the meditation process, with Adele mentioning a former participant who is now pursuing a PhD to conduct research on the four steps. Empowerment Technique and Practice Adele shared a technique for personal empowerment involving four steps: identifying a pattern of physical sensation, emotion, and thought without judgment; acknowledging that one created their reality; deconstructing the pattern; and creating a new pattern. She emphasized that this process, similar to exercise, requires daily practice and takes about 6 weeks for the brain to adapt. Adele encouraged Jeffery to try the technique, which is detailed in her free book available at shift4steps.com. Morning Routines Jeffery shared his morning routine tips, including getting morning sunlight before 10 AM, taking electrolytes with water, and delaying coffee for 90 minutes to improve sleep and reduce cortisol levels. What if healing doesn't start with managing your emotions—but with understanding how your brain responds to fear, grief, and hope? In this episode, Dr. Alison sits down with neurosurgeon, author, and Iraq War veteran Dr. Lee Warren to explore trauma, loss, faith, and the brain's God-given capacity to change. After unimaginable loss, Dr. Warren shares how “self-brain surgery”—learning to notice and interrupt destructive thought patterns—helped him restore hope and agency without bypassing grief. This conversation will help you understand: —Why most of our thoughts are repetitive, negative, and often untrue —How trauma wires automatic thoughts—and how those patterns can change —How faith and neuroscience meet in practical ways —The difference between the mind and the brain, and why that distinction matters for healing This episode offers hope without shortcuts. It honors the reality of suffering while reminding us that our past does not get the final word — not neurologically, not emotionally, and not spiritually.

de Description JON LABMAN'S life's work is about helping people overcome trauma, anxiety, self-doubt and low self-esteem, while waking up to their deepest nature as the Absolute, like he did himself..Jon was traumatized at home, bullied at school, and lived in uncomprehending misery for years, including being in and out of extreme religious cults and doing many years of psychotherapy work as a client. He understands how difficult the process of change can be, because Jon lived and still lives it.He also knows how awesome the rewards of moving towards Liberation are. Jon was bound and determined to feel better, and that kept him alive and persisting through numerous 'false starts. He started working with my first psychologist at the age of 15, but didn't really take to the work until he was nearly 30. Jon started on an active spiritual path at the same time which has taken him into Judaism, evangelical and then new age Christianity, and finally into the mystical awakening traditions of the East (Hinduism, Yoga, Buddhism, etc.) He started my professional journey as an administrative and technical writing professional, but then moved into working with people, first as a Licensed Massage Therapist, where he realized that the most rewarding part of the work was listening to clients' life stories. Jon then returned to school and earned a Master's in Counseling Psychology. Since then, He's been the Director of the Trauma Treatment Program at a large agency, receiving numerous accreditations, written four books, and earned two trauma treatment certifications from the world-famous specialists Dr. Bessel van der Kolk and Dr. Bruce Perry – all while seeing clients full-time. Jon also studied Energy Healing for 3 years, got a 500-hour certification as a Yoga Teacher, and began teaching meditation and spiritual awakening in 2001. For the last 23 years,Jon been helping people move from a tortured existence to a life of peace and contentment, living from the shining center or Core of who they are. Together we unpack the cultural lie that “untouched” equals valuable, and replace it with a craftsperson's lens: honor the break, highlight the seam, and build a vessel that holds more. You'll get a simple four-step practice to apply today—name the break, extract the lesson, reinforce it with new behaviors, and stop hiding the seam—so resilience becomes a system, not a slogan.By the end, you'll have a challenge to make this mindset stick: write what happened, what it cost, and what gold you gained that you refuse to ignore. Share your seam with someone who needs strength right now. If this message reminded you that you're forged, not fragile, follow the show, leave a review, and send this to a friend who thinks they're disqualified. Your story isn't over—the gold gets added next.Support the showThanks for listening & being part of the Mindset Cafe Community.----------------------------------------------Connect With Devan:https://www.devangonzalez.com/connect----------------------------------------------Follow On Instagram https://www.instagram.com/devan.gonzalez/https://www.instagram.com/mindsetcafepodcastLet me know what topics or questions you want covered so we can help you achieve your goals faster.
