Lauren Kleiman is a dedicated public servant and community leader serving the residents of Newport Beach, CA in numerous community and civic roles. She is a member of the City Council and for 2026 she is serving as Mayor. No small feats. This is especially impressive considering that Lauren grew up on Long Island, New York and had no aspirations for “politics.” But she found herself wanting to be an engaged and active member of her community when she and her husband moved to Newport Beach over a decade ago. Today, she is as passionate and committed to her community as they come. Formally trained as a lawyer, her knowledge and tenacity have found fertile ground in public service and have provided a strong foundation for the positions she holds. These same skill sets are the basis for her desire to dig deep and develop a strong understanding of the technical details that are paramount within these roles. Known for her clear views and pragmatic approach to local government, Lauren brings a strong focus to fiscal responsibility, public safety and preserving the unique character of Newport Beach's neighborhoods and coastline. While Newport Beach is the canvas, Lauren's path to public service, her why and the challenges associated with public office is what I was most interested in. Regardless of where you live, public service and being an active and engaged member of your community is something that we all need to play a role in; or risk what happens without our engagement. In this conversation, Lauren shares her path to public service, her goals and the challenges of serving, and her perspective on leadership at the local level. It's a candid look at what it takes to govern a world-class coastal city while staying grounded and representing the needs of the people who call it home. 0:00 – “Introducing Lauren Kleiman & Today's Conversation” 6:40 – Lauren's Background & Path Into Public Service 14:10 – Why Local Leadership Matters More Than Ever 22:05 – Community Needs, Listening & Real Representation 30:00 – Challenges Facing Local Government Today 38:15 – Leadership Under Pressure & Tough Decision-Making 46:20 – Balancing Policy, People & Practical Solutions 54:10 – Building Trust & Long-Term Community Impact 1:01:45 – Lessons Learned From Public Service 1:09:30 – Advice for Aspiring Leaders & Civic Engagement 1:17:05 – The Future of Local Leadership 1:25:10 – Final Reflections & Closing Thoughts

In this episode of the JuvoHub Podcast, host Jonathan Saar continues the learning theory series by breaking down one of the most misunderstood concepts in education: micro learning. Jonathan also highlights insights from several articles on micro learning, including research on how adults absorb, process, and retain new information. You'll walk away with a clearer understanding of when micro learning works, when it doesn't, and how to design it with intention—not convenience. TLDR: Micro learning isn't “shorter content.” Its purposeful design grounded in how adult learners process information. Key Takeaways 00:00 – Why Micro Learning Became a Buzzword 00:43 – The Real Meaning of Micro Learning 01:30 – Why “Just Shorter” Isn't Micro Learning 03:36 – Breaking Down the Research 04:45 – What True Micro Learning Requires 05:55 – How the Brain Retains Information 06:40 – Applying Micro Learning to Adult Learners 07:32 – Making Intentional Design Decisions 08:13 – When Micro Learning Works—and When It Doesn't 08:50 – Final Thoughts and Invitation to Share Why Micro Learning Design Matters Micro learning continues to influence how educators and organizations shape modern training, but its value depends entirely on intentional design rooted in learning theory. This episode reinforces that micro learning is not simply shorter content—it's a strategic approach that aligns with how adults absorb and retain information. As you refine your training strategy, understanding the science behind micro learning helps you create experiences that are more engaging, more sustainable, and ultimately more effective. "Creating safe spaces for people to talk about money is one of the most powerful things we can do right now to make the world better for change." -Meg Wheeler Our hosts Stephanie McCullough and Kevin Gaines sit down with Meg Wheeler, CPA and founder of the Equitable Money Project, who's on a mission to demolish the shame surrounding money conversations through accessible financial education. Her approach shows us that the path to financial confidence isn't about becoming an expert. It's about learning to simply talk about money without judgment. "Why should we know this when we've never been taught it in school?" Meg challenges the pervasive shame many people feel about their financial knowledge gaps. After all, we don't feel ashamed about not knowing brain surgery or environmental science because we were never taught those subjects either! The real problem isn't lack of knowledge, but the absence of safe spaces to discuss money openly. Meg's work centers on creating a community where people can share their financial stories without fear. She emphasizes that most people's situations aren't unique. Whether it's medical debt from our broken healthcare system or struggling with inconsistent business income, the factors contributing to financial challenges are systemic rather than personal failures. She suggests going for incremental progress rather than perfection. "Every quarter we want you to pick just one thing within one of those buckets to focus on," she explains, referring to her three-pillar framework: set up foundations, stabilize, and grow. This approach makes wealth-building feel achievable rather than overwhelming. Perhaps most powerfully, Meg advocates for teaching children about money early. Her eight-year-old has a debit card and checks his bank balance before purchases. Not because he's learning to become a financial professional, but because money should not be feared but normalized. Financial empowerment begins not with expertise, but with conversation, community, and compassion toward ourselves and others navigating the same challenges. Mensimah's Round Table: Conversations with Women of Power and Grace
Episode Theme: Redefining your legacy through self-worth, empowered choice, and rewriting inherited narratives. In this heartfelt conversation at the Round Table, we explore how the stories we inherit—those passed down by family, culture, and societal expectations—shape how we see ourselves and what we believe we're allowed to dream. This episode is a gentle but powerful invitation to examine the stories that have held you back and to awaken to the truth that your legacy begins the moment you choose a new narrative.Through reflection, wisdom, and a grounding meditation, you'll learn how to step into your worth, break generational patterns, and create an impact that ripples far beyond you.3 Things you'll Learn:Recognizing inherited patterns: Learn how to identify stories and beliefs that were handed to you, not chosen by you—and how they've influenced your self-worth.Self-worth as the foundation of legacy: Your legacy is not about accomplishment alone. It's about how deeply you value your voice, your dreams, and your humanity. How to begin writing a new story: Practical, doable steps to build a life grounded in self-love—one choice, boundary, or act of courage at a time.Wisdom of the Week: You are not bound by the past. Every empowered choice becomes a thread in the legacy you are creating right now. When you hold your worth, you inspire others—your peers, your children, and even generations yet to come—to rise with you.Closing Ritual:Together, we practice Hakini Mudra, a gesture of unity and inner wisdom, repeating the mantra:“I am a woman of power and grace.”(Seven times, forming a field of resonance and intention.)Join Our CommunityIf this message resonates, join us in the Composing a New Narrative community—where women worldwide gather to rewrite their stories with courage, compassion, and joy. While Cathleen and I are working on new content for the podcast—stay tuned, there's lots of exciting stuff coming—we wanted to take a moment to revisit some of Michael's excellent past episodes. For my first “best of” pick, I chose Episode 17, Oceans of Grain, which originally aired on March 2, 2022. In this episode, Michael talks with historian Scott Reynolds Nelson about how the global trade in wheat reshaped the modern world. It's a fascinating look at how the Gilded Age and Progressive Era fit into a much larger story of empire, capitalism, and global connection. When the episode first aired, Russia had just invaded Ukraine, and Nelson's discussion of the Black Sea grain routes suddenly felt eerily relevant. Listening again now, it's striking how powerfully this conversation links nineteenth-century global trade to the world we live in today. We hope you'll enjoy (re)listening as much as we did—and we'd love to know which episodes stand out as your favourites!Essential Reading:Scott Reynolds Nelson, Oceans of Grain: How American Wheat Remade the World (2022).Recommended Reading:Neal Ascherson, The Black Sea (1996).Bettany Hughes, Istanbul: A Tale of Three Cities (2017).Avner Offer, The First World War: An Agrarian Interpretation (1989).Vaclav Smil, Creating the Twentieth Century: Technical Innovations of 1867-1914 and their Lasting Impact (2004). Mike Palmer welcomes Carlo Rotella, a professor at Boston College and author of the book What Can I Get Out of This? Teaching and Learning in a Classroom Full of Skeptics. Rotella, who has an academic specialty in the cultures of cities and also writes for magazines like The New York Times Magazine, approaches his classroom as a "scene" much like a boxing gym or a music club, where people practice a craft and hone their "chops". We dive into the book, which captures the spring semester of 2020 and presents a narrative-style look at Rotella's required freshman literature course. He shares his mission: to change his students' initial question from "Can I get out of this?" to "What can I get out of this?" by treating the interpretation of literature as a learnable craft, not "sorcery or bullshit". Rotella explains how this approach requires us to build a strong classroom community, including policies like banning devices and expecting every student to speak at every class meeting. He reveals the effort required to get quiet students to participate, sometimes using techniques like rehearsing answers in office hours—just as a team practices a play. Rotella argues that in a world of AI and "endless number of talking heads" , the classroom remains a vital "haven" where students can build critical skills and practice analytical response to the world.
In this special compilation of The Burn Podcast, Ben Newman brings together two powerhouse conversations that define what it means to live with purpose, resilience, and unrelenting drive.First, Bruce Cardenas takes us through his extraordinary path — from the Marines and LAPD to becoming the Chief Communications Officer at Quest Nutrition, and now a driving force behind brands like Legendary Foods. Bruce shares how his discipline, attention to detail, and relentless commitment to service opened doors he never expected. But beyond his professional success, Bruce's story is about people — the power of building authentic relationships, leading with gratitude, and showing up for others without expectation. His journey reminds us that fulfillment doesn't come from chasing titles but from finding ways to contribute and lift others along the way. Then, Jason Redman, a decorated Navy SEAL, joins Ben to share his story of survival, leadership, and the “Overcome Mindset” that turned one of life's darkest moments into his greatest source of strength. After being severely wounded in combat, Jason refused to be defined by his injuries. Instead, he built a new mission: helping others rise through their own ambushes — the unexpected challenges that test our purpose and perseverance. His story is not just about war; it's about the fight we all face in life, and the power of preparation, awareness, and relentless belief in your mission.Together, these conversations capture the essence of The Burn — the inner fire that pushes YOU to serve, to overcome, and to keep showing up when life demands your very best.************************************Watch the full episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/KOBRaWl5P8UListen on all platforms: https://www.theburnpodcast.com************************************Learn about upcoming events and coaching: https://www.workwithbnc.comGet Ben's latest book The STANDARD: https://amzn.to/3DE1clY1stWork directly with Ben: https://www.bennewmancoaching.comConnect with Ben Newman:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/continuedfightFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/Continuedfight/Twitter: https://twitter.com/ContinuedFightLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-newman-b0b693Qlogix: www.Q-logix.com/benhttps://www.bennewmancoaching.com************************************ Learn about our Upcoming events and programs:https://www.workwithbnc.comLet's work TOGETHER https://www.bennewmancoaching.comLet's work together to write YOUR next book- BNC PublishingSend us a message Order my latest book The STANDARD: Winning at YOUR Highest Level: https://amzn.to/3DE1clY1st Phorm | The Foundation of High Performance Nutrition1stPhorm.com/bnewman Connect with me everywhere else: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/continuedfight Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Continuedfight/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/ContinuedFight Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-newman-b0b693

What if your carefully crafted training course could become a content campaign that actually drives behavior change? Most L&D professionals create amazing content that gets consumed once and forgotten. But what if that single course could spawn dozens of touchpoints that reinforce learning over time? We're seeing a shift where smart L&D teams are borrowing from marketing playbooks, and it's working. The secret isn't creating more content; it's strategically repurposing what you already have.Joining this episode is Mike Taylor, Learning Consultant at Nationwide and co-author of "Think Like a Marketer, Train Like an L&D Pro."Mike's been pioneering the campaign approach to learning, and shows us how one webinar recording can become email sequences, infographics, GIFs, and micro-learning moments. He explains why thinking in campaigns rather than courses changes everything, introduces the SURE model for creating content that sticks, and shows how to overcome the "we don't have time" objection with smart repurposing strategies.Learning points from the episode include:00:00 - 02:22 Introduction to repurposing and spawning multiple content pieces02:22 - 05:15 Why repurposing isn't more work and how to expand your reach05:15 - 06:56 Think campaigns not courses: the hero content pyramid06:56 - 09:19 Leaving breadcrumb trails across multiple channels09:19 - 11:51 Setting hooks and the SURE model for relevant content11:51 - 12:39 Why content creates feelings whether you know it or not12:39 - 14:23 Turning annual compliance into year-round micro-learning14:23 - 16:37 Using AI and A/B testing data to sell repurposing internally16:37 - 17:58 Finding small experiments to build credibility17:58 - 21:13 Visual repurposing: webinars to GIFs, polls to graphics21:13 - 23:13 Using Camtasia for Microsoft Office tips and animated GIFs23:13 - 25:00 Why even simple content benefits from repurposing25:00 - 26:53 Making subject matter expert content digestible26:53 - 31:15 OutroImportant links and mentions:Connect with Mike Taylor on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/miketaylor/Find out more about Train Like a Marketer: https://trainlikeamarketer.com/Camtasia: https://www.techsmith.com/camtasia/ Snagit: https://www.techsmith.com/snagit/Audiate: https://www.techsmith.com/camtasia/audiate/
