Funnybooks and Firewater

Our last Mai Tai book was intended to focus on the beach aspect of this tiki drink.  We don't have a lot of beaches, but we have some fun spy action. 

Were pairing one of the first tiki cocktails with one of the first families.  This week we are reading the Flinstones. 

Drink of the Month: Mai tai. Features two different types of Rums.  St. Young Men features two religious icons, Jesus and Budah, sharing an apartment in Tokyo as they vacation among the humans.

It's our last book for pride month. A romantic story of love and baking. 

This week we are reading a book that has no business being as good as it is.  Snagglepuss of cartoon fame stars as a closeted playwright in the middle of the Macarthy "red scare".  

It's week two of Pride, and we are reading the book that puts the sass in Assassin. This week we are reading Killer Queens. 

We're back after a more extended break than we intended. It's pride month and we are starting with a follow-up to a book we read last year.  Join us as we read Volume 2 of Heartstopper. 

It's that time of year to read goofy books about men who make an entire town love them in order to spite the dude who stole his girlfriend.  Nothing says holidays like next-level-passive-aggression.

We have come to the end of our grand experiment.  It's the last of our Aquaman books.  Will Alaina ever learn to love the fish-talking aquatic lover boy? Listen in to find out!

Our second to last Aquaman book.  Will Laina every survive? If she does, will she every forgive us?

Laina is a woman on the edge. She may not be the biggest Aquaman fan. But we liked the book ok.   

Week two of our look into Aquaman.  Will Laina learn to love the underwater hero? Probably not, but it makes for a fun conversation. 

This month we are doing a grand experiment.  We are reading five different creative teams take on a  character we know very little about - Aquaman.  We start with the new 52 relaunch written by Geoff Johns. 

We end our Halloween month with our traditional Archie Horror Book.  This time it's the evil-est kids in Riverdale, the Blossoms, raising hell. 

Only the mushroom tea can save you now...because...reasons...I guess.

We are continuing our dive into Halloween comics with a witch/cop in the book Black Magick. 

We are back! We return from hiatus with the start of our 6th year of Horror Comics for Halloween!  This week we are reading the Carrie / Fight Club mash-up Alena. Which Todd described as "Girls Are Mean".

We end our collection  of pride books with an autobiographical tale of people with issues, and their dog with issues. 

This week we are reading a manga dealing with the experience of a young man discovering his sexual identity as he connects with a commune of interesting characters.

A theme park haunted house is the home base for a band of misfits, and a portal to hell in this week's comic.

Happy Pride Month! We are starting this year with a book that was on a lot of top 10 LGBTQIA+ Comic book lists.  Just maybe not for this volume.  

It's gonzo-journalism in a dark American future. We are finishing out our month of sci-fi with a book about what goes on inside Alaina's head. 

This week we are reading a comic book adaptation of one of the greats in Sci-fi. With multiple adaptations of this classic work to choose from, how does this comic compare?

We are going way out into space for a sci-fi tale involving a green lantern, illegal emotions, a murder mystery, and politics. It's more fun than that description implies. 

The earth is about to end,  and an alien species is here to collect our DNA and make big intergalactic bucks on selling an extinct species. 

May thee 4th be with you! We are starting our month of Sci-fi books with the back story of the Star Wars Emo kid supreme - Kylo Ren. 

This week we finish up our month of true crime books with a fictional interpretation of one of the oldest unsolved murders in LA history. 

We continue our true crime month with the story of one of the detectives who spent a good part of his career hunting down a serial killer.  

Once again this week we are looking at a true crime tale from the state of Wisconson.  This weeks killer has been the basis  of  some of the movies scariest killers. 

It's the most wonderful time of the year!  We are beginning our month of True Crime comics with My Friend Dahlmer.  The backstory of the notorious killer, cannibal, and collector Jeffery Dahlmer.  This is is the story of his High School days, written and illustrated by a fellow classmate who knew Dahlmer fairly well. 

It's the end of our Sword and Scorchy month. This week is the French comic that depicts fairies, fantastical worlds, life, and death. 

This week's installment of Sword and Sorcery month called on the Arthurian legend.  With a character, we all lovingly refer to as "the John Wick of Grandmas".

This week we have some good ole' fashioned Norse ass kicking.  Some early work from some of our favorite creators. Join us for part two of the Rikard series (although you don't have to read book one to enjoy this book, trust us, we didn't).

We talk about the book in this episode, I swear! We discuss a lot of other stuff first.  And we sort of have a split decision on this one, which is also fun. 

Were doing sword and sorcery this month.  We are starting with Monstress a beautiful book about power, corruption, and the main character's road to reclaiming her life after it was torn apart by war. 

It's the origin/backstory to one of the best villains in the MCU.  This week Black Panther's rival returns to Wakanda. 

This week we have a new hero in training. Ironheart takes up the Iron Man gig. 

This week we read what we refer to as "The Good Strange Fruit".  Last year we read something else, while Alaina read this lovely book.  Now we get to read the book she loved.  

We begin our celebration of Black comics with the conclusion of Congressmen John Lewis's autobiographical comic March.  Book three of March deals with the voting rights act and the march to Selma, Alabama. 

The End is Neigh!  This week we explore the final chapter of I Hate Fairyland. 

Nice guys finish last, but can a "Good Gert" get out of fairyland?  Probably not.  

We continue our epic tale of Gerd and her adventures in Fairyland. Last week, she ended up as the Queen of Fairyland...yeah, that's gonna be a thing. 

We are starting out the new year with a book that is basically Alaina in comic form!

We end our year with a twist on the classic Christmas Carol story.  England is overrun by Zombies and it may or may not be Scrooges' fault. We're taking a few weeks off for the Holidays, so we will see you back here in January with I Hate Fairyland.
