Hello, Libration Nation! This week, we're diving into the vibrant world of "Paper Girls," an imaginative comic series by Brian K. Vaughn with artwork by Cliff Chiang. This series, which intertwines coming-of-age narratives with sci-fi elements, is a thrilling ride that takes us through time travel and interwoven destinies.Joining me this week is comedian and bookseller Mary Jane French. Mary Jane has been performing Stand-up since she was 18-years-old. After starting her gender transition, she began cultivating material that captured her early experiences with transition and recorded it in a home-made special entitled Mary Jane French: Bearded Woman. Currently Mary Jane is producing comedy shows in Richmond, VA with Traverse Comedy. This week, we indulged in a delightful drink choice: a warm, soothing apple cider, which is perfect as we slip further in our fall season, it's a bit of a play on words, as Mary Jane explains, Apple products play a quirky role in the series. While ours was the classic non-alcoholic version, we can't forget to mention that apple ciders can be easily personalized with a splash of your favorite spirit, or simply enjoyed with a cinnamon stick for a spicy twist. As always, if you enjoyed our lively discussion and want to help us grow our community, please share, like, review, and subscribe wherever you tune into our episodes. In this episode, Phillip and Eric conclude their retrospective on the DC Comics/Wildstorm political superhero series, Ex Machina, by Brian K. Vaughn and Tony Harris. They discuss its twist ending, the culmination of the series' sci-fi and superhero elements fusing with 2000s-era politics, and Eric asks Phillip to join him in launching his campaign to replace Eric Adams as mayor of New York.
In this episode, Phillip and Eric discuss the penultimate part of the DC Comics/Wildstorm political superhero series, Ex Machina by Brian K. Vaughn and Tony Harris. They talk about the series's most out-there foray into genre space, Mayor Mitchell Hundred's descent into greater political ambitions, and Eric asks Phillip about New Yorker stereotypes.
In this episode, Phillip and Eric continue their retrospective on the DC Comics/Wildstorm political superhero series, Ex Machina by Brian K. Vaughn and Tony Harris. They share their feelings on this being the weakest part of the series, the outdatedness of the political issues it tackles in this portion, and Phillip educates Eric on Mayor Eric Adams and NYC's checkered mayoral history.
In this episode, Phillip and Eric continue their retrospective on the Wildstorm/DC political superhero comic series, Ex Machina by Brian K. Vaughn and Tony Harris. They break down Harris's exquisite art style, discuss the comic's approach to terrorism and supervillains, and Phillip educates Eric about New York subways and ferries.
Just in time for election season, Phillip and Eric kick off the first part of their retrospective on the DC/Wildstorm political superhero series, Ex Machina by Brian K. Vaughn and Tony Harris. They talk about the comic as a time capsule of post-9/11 New York, its approach of a former superhero becoming mayor of New York and putting out political fires, and The Omnibus gives its official endorsement for 2024 US presidential race!

Time to play some catch-up and discuss all things comics and geek related! Chris, Shane and Ian start us off with news on Ike Perlmutter's removal from Marvel after more than thirty years. They then discuss some recent movies watched, including Chris and Ian's thoughts on John Wick Chapter Four, Ian's journey into Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and Shane getting his first viewing of Everything, Everywhere All at Once. The meat of the episode is a spoiler-filled review of Shazam: Fury of the Gods (37:15-1:08:00), followed by spoilery discussion of Picard (through episode 4) with some occasional very light spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery and its universe (1:08:00-1:32:00). And then, as we begin talking comics read...MURD COMETH!!! Once arrived, he gives his thoughts on the Shazam: Fury of the Gods movie from 1:40:58 until about 1:55:00. Recent reads include Shane's return to Crisis on Infinite Earths, Murd talks Wolverine: Origins from back in the day, Justice League: Detroit's turn at JLA: Classified and Brian K. Vaughn's The Escapsists, Ian digs into Jason Aaron's Avengers: Forever and Dawn of DC's Action Comics and Superman #1, and Chris delves into Danger Street, Gotham City: Year One, Volume 1 of Rainbow Rowell's She-Hulk, and Flashpoint Beyond. Plus Muddle the Murd, and as usual...more! (2:33:43)

Syndicated Source Material 021 - “Y: The Last Man” #1-10 #YTheLastMan based on the #DCComics will premiere today on #FXonHulu after years of delays. To celebrate Jesse, Ronnie, Josh Calandros, and Laura Calandros hop back into the first 10 issues of Brian K. Vaughn's “Y: The Last Man!”
Our two comics aficionados tackle the first volume (issues 1-5) of the Vertigo series, “Y: The Last Man” before the TV adaptation premiers of FX and Hulu! Co-created by writer Brian K. Vaughn and penciler Pia Guerra (with inks by Jose Marzan Jr.), this 60-issue series took place in a world where a virus wipes out every creature on Earth with a Y chromosome except for amateur escape artist Yorick Brown and his helper monkey, Ampersand. Yorick teams up with the secretive Agent 355 and geneticist Dr. Leslie Mann to uncover the cause of the virus and hopefully save the human race! We specifically only discuss events that take place during the first trade paperback, so there will be no spoilers for anyone who hasn't completed this series, but we think once you read this first volume, you'll want to read the rest! We will be back in two weeks to celebrate September's Batman Day with our episode focusing on “Batman: Gotham by Gaslight” by Brian Augustyn, Mike Mignola and P. Craig Russell. Matt and Cale are joined by Tyler Echols (one of Matt's OTHER best friends) to discuss the Dynamite Comics reboot of “Green Hornet.” Based on the un-produced screenplay by filmmaker Kevin Smith, this graphic novel was adapted by Phil Hester with pencil art by Jonathan Lau and fully painted covers by Alex Ross. Originally created for the radio in 1936, the Green Hornet and Kato were a dynamic duo of masked crime fighters three years before Batman first appeared! The character has appeared in comics, feature films (starring Seth Rogen and Jay Chou) and a short-lived TV series in the 1960s where the characters teamed up with Adam West and Burt Ward's Batman and Robin! This TV series was also the first major American role for Bruce Lee as Kato! There are a few dated elements, but Matt, Cale and Tyler all truly enjoyed this very cinematic graphic novel! All three are big fans of Kevin Smith, but give Smith props for stepping outside of his comfort zone to create something that doesn't feel like anything from his View Askewniverse! We will be back in two weeks for our episode on the first volume (collecting the first five issues) of “Y: The Last Man” by Brian K Vaughn and Pia Guerra. In a somewhat chaotic sixth episode, Pie and Lulu revisit their superhero comic nerd roots by rereading Young Avengers. A teenage superhero team originally created in 2005 by Allan Heinburg and Jim Cheung, members of the Young Avengers have gone on to become popular throughout the Marvel universe, starring in team books, solo stories, and epic comic crossovers. Starting back at the first run and reading all the way up to recent months, we discuss one of the most bonkers family trees at Marvel, LGBTQ+ representation in superhero comics, and the difficulties of life as a superpowered teen crimefighter, as well critiquing what has or hasn't held up in the years since we first discovered these comics. Content warnings: discussions of drug addiction, sexual assault, antiblack racism, human experimentation, depression, and suicidal ideation. In which we discuss the much-discussed Saga by Brian K Vaughn and Fiona Staples! We delve a teensy bit in to the backgrounds of the creators and what they've done otherwise. We also discuss what we like (or maybe don't like) about the series.Episode V is live, baby! We're still working on how we put together the show. I think it'll depend on the topic. Shows that are run-based will likely focus more on creator bios or maybe just behind-the-scenes stuff on the run. Shows that focus on a broader character treatment will probably be lighter on that stuff with maybe a few references tossed in for a bit of spice. We're also working on diversifying our content. It won't always be Marvel/DC as you can see from this episode! Anyway, please leave a rating and comment on whichever service you downloaded your episode from. Telling the story of a group of high schoolers who happen upon their parents performing a secret ritual that leads them to discover their parents are actually villains. The teens come together to form their own odd Breakfast Club like "superhero" team. Comprised of the boy genius, tech inventor, telepathically dinosaur linked girl, a girl with massive strength, a magician, and a girl who has mysterious alien-like powers the teens aren't just forced to take on their parents but they are forced to get along with each other. Marvel's "Runaways" works best with its interaction between the kids and that is well mirrored with the parents interacting with their own group. Both teams are complex, well written and acted. Marvel's Runaways is yet another hit in the ever-growing MCU freight train. Directed by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the series has been renewed for a second season and expanded from 10 episodes to the standard Marvel 13.This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5939723/advertisement
