[School of Everything Else 2025] All the way back in 2017 I put together an absolutely EPIC musical journey through the first eight years of the MCU, from Iron Man all the way up to Doctor Strange. So much time has passed since then (cue many gifs of Matt Damon drinking from the wrong Grail) and Marvel has not followed my sound advice about allowing each hero (and maybe a villain or two) to retain a theme that reprises with every subsequent appearance. However, that does not mean there haven't been some truly excellent scores composed, which got side-lined in the clickbaity rush to pronounce Marvel as being formulaic, failing or indeed signifying the baleful death of film. Here for you now is a compendium of themes and sonic explorations as Phase 3 draws to its epic conclusion and Phases 4 and 5 wend their way from the small screen to the big and back again. I look forward to a third volume of these shows sometime in the early 2030s, when the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, Secret Wars and whatever happens with Spider-Man and whatever inevitable soft reboot brings us to a new era of superhero cinema. 1.     The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (‘Louisiana Hero' by Henry Jackman) 2.     Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (‘Dad' by Tyler Bates) 3.     Spider-Man Homecoming (Michael Giacchino) 4.     Thor: Ragnarok (‘Main Title' by Mark Mothersbourough) 5.     Black Panther (‘Wakanda', ‘Warrior Falls' and ‘Killmonger' by Ludwig Goransson) 6.     Infinity War (Alan Silvestri) 7.     Captain Marvel (‘Main Theme' and ‘All Fired Up' by Pinar Toprak) 8.     Black Widow (‘Yelena Belova' and ‘Natasha Soars' by Lorne Balfe) 9.     WandaVision (‘Opening Themes: 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s' and ‘End Cretids' by Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Robert Lopez and Christophe Beck) 10. In this thought-provoking episode of Superhero Ethics, hosts Matthew Fox and Riki Hayashi dive deep into the question of why heroes become villains and where the responsibility lies when they fall. Using examples from Star Wars, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Matthew and Riki examine the complex factors that can lead even the most heroic figures down a dark path.Is Anakin Skywalker solely to blame for his transformation into Darth Vader, or do the Jedi Order and Palpatine share responsibility for his fall? How much did the differing upbringings of Zuko and Azula shape their destinies? And what role did Killmonger's experiences with racial injustice play in his turn?  Through their nuanced discussion, Matthew and Riki explore the tension between personal accountability and the impact of circumstances and institutional failures. They argue for moving beyond simplistic notions of blame to instead ask what lessons can be learned to prevent future tragedies. The hosts apply this lens to their own lives as well, reflecting on how self-examination and breaking generational cycles are key to growth.Other topics covered include:The importance of good mentorship and emotional support for vulnerable youthHow authoritarian regimes can re-emerge in the wake of revolution South Africa's Truth & Reconciliation Commission as a model for societal healingBonus content for members on the upcoming Acolyte show! Ever hear about the Mexican reporter who smuggled a codex back into Mexico? In this edition of Throwback Thursday, we revisit this story from way back in Episode 14!Rescuing the Tonalamatl Aubin A couple of years back, I visited the British National Museum in London, England, with my wife. As we stood in front of the many Mesoamerican artifacts on display, objects that the hands of our ancestors had meticulously crafted, I was reminded of a scene from the Marvel film "Black Panther." If you have seen the movie, I'm sure you remember which scene I am referring to. In it, the character Erik "Killmonger" Stevens, played by Michael B Jordan, stands in front of African artifacts at the fictional "Museum of Great Britain." This scene caused an interesting discussion in the archaeological community and among museum professionals when the movie first came out. In an essay titled "Why museum professionals need to talk about Black Panther" Casey Haughin of John Hopkins wrote that Black Panther "presented the museum as an illegal mechanism of colonialism, and along with that, a space which does not even welcome those whose culture it displays." Now, I'm not gonna lie, part of me wished that I had my own team of highly skilled Nawa operatives with me at the museum in London. And that we were there to pull off a carefully orchestrated heist, liberating the objects of our Mesoamerican cultural inheritance and returning them to the land of their birth. Unfortunately, such acts of daring cultural restitution are the stuff of pure fantasy. More at home in the Marvel Cinematic Universe than in the real world. Or are they? Your Hosts: Kurly Tlapoyawa is an archaeologist, ethnohistorian, and filmmaker. His research covers Mesoamerica, the American Southwest, and the historical connections between the two regions. He is the author of numerous books and has presented lectures at the University of New Mexico, Yale University, San Diego State University, and numerous others. @kurlytlapoyawaRuben Arellano Tlakatekatl is a scholar, activist, and professor of history. His research explores Chicana/Chicano indigeneity, Mexican indigenist nationalism, and Coahuiltecan identity resurgence. Other areas of research include Aztlan (US Southwest), Anawak (Mesoamerica), and Native North America. He has presented and published widely on these topics and has taught courses at various institutions. He currently teaches history at Dallas College – Mountain View Campus. In the Black Panther movie, Killmonger said "Just bury me in the ocean with my ancestors who jumped from ships, 'cause they knew death was better than bondage." It's a powerful statement and concept that we don't think or about how enslaved people didn't easily submit to their circumstances and simply accept enslavement. Incredibly, resistance came in many forms.

Episode 61 - Black Panther Movie Review After a fun week reading the comics origins of characters such as T'Challa and Killmonger we now turn to the blockbuster movie that brought them to a worldwide audience – Ryan Coogler's Black Panther!  This Week In Comics Jonathan Hickman Reveals He's Working on Another Book at Marvel https://comicbook.com/comics/news/jonathan-hickman-teases-new-marvel-comics-series-gods/ New on Marvel Unlimited this Week https://www.marvel.com/comics/calendar/week/2023-09-03 No number 1s this week. X-23, Thing, Doctor Strange, Venom, Silver Surfer, Captain Britian, Spider-Man 2099, Deadpool, Punisher and Carnage among those with new books available this week. Recommendation: Nic Stone's history of Black Panther podcast. https://www.podbean.com/podcast-detail/hfp2d-258d5e/The-History-of-Marvel-Comics-Black-Panther-Podcast Film Facts Tagline: Long Live the King Released: February 16, 2018 Runtime: 134 minutes Box Office: worldwide: $1,346,913,161 / domestic: $700,059,566 Budget: $200,000,000 IMDB Rating: 7.3/10 Stars: Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Letitia Wright, Danial Kaluuya, Winston Duke, Andy Serkis, Forest Whitaker and Angela Bassett Directed: Ryan Coogler Screenplay: Ryan Coogler, Joe Robert Cole  2ish Minute Recap and Discussion Topics Chadwick Boseman is electric  Michael B. Jordan is fantastic  Ryan Coogler was the right one to direct this story  The Power of Women  Powerful Storytelling  Tangent about Black Beetle Good CGI throughout. Better than in theaters? Tidbits  From the comics  Face Off! Which Did it better? The Comics or the Movie Correspondence Bluesky message from Amanda What's Next: Avengers: Infinity War Comics Infinity Gauntlet (1991) #1-6  Thanos Rising (2013) #1-5  Signoff Questions or comments We'd love to hear from you!  Email us at questions@comicsovertime.com or find us on Twitter @comicsoftime. ------------------ Music Intro and Outro created by Lesfm.

Episode 60 - Black Panther - The Story Thus Far This week we are going far back in Marvel history to take a look at the first appearance of the Black Panther, stopping for a bit in the 70s to see the arrival of Killmonger, and then finishing up with a look at Black Panther vol 3 from the late 90s.  This Week In Comics Tom King and Peter Gross Team Up with BOOM! Studios for Animal Pound  https://www.cbr.com/animal-pound-tom-king-peter-gross-boom-studios/ New on Marvel Unlimited this Week https://www.marvel.com/comics/calendar/week/2023-08-27 Recommendation: WHY WAKANDA MATTERS by Dr. Sheena C. Howard https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/692340/why-wakanda-matters-by-sheena-c-howard-phd/ This Week's Stack Fantastic Four #52   Jungle Action #6   Black Panther Vol 3 #1-12 (but mostly 9-12)   Creator Profile: Christopher Priest 2 Minute Recap and Discussion Topics Fantastic Four #52  (and #53) The Panther starts out as a bad guy?  Ben is really, really awful in these books.  Sort of the designated racist of the FF.  Duane learned a bit about Maximus, Medusa, Crystal and met Gorgon and Karnak for the first time  The person without super powers – Wyatt Wingfoot – saves the day by freeing Johnny Storm and by extension the rest of the FF.  Jungle Action #6  (and #7) Killmonger is angry from the start  T'Challa is shown to be trapped between duties to two worlds  There's a really cool page of maps - the Land of Wakanda and Central Wakanda included as the last page of this book  McGregor and artist P. Craig Russell were behind the first interracial romantic kiss in mainstream comics, which happened in a 1975 Killraven story.  Black Panther Vol 3 #1-12 Part of the Marvel Knights imprint.  Somewhat confusing Storytelling in that the entire story is being told by Everett Ross to his boss (and partner Nikki – office of the chief of protocol)  Some fantastic things happen across 12 books, Go to hell with Memphisto, get captured by Kraven the Hunter, Dealing with the White Wolf – a sorta half brother, saves an ex from death – Monica Lynne, has a run-in with the Avengers and defeats a guy trying to take over Wakanda while he's away. Oh and save his step-mother.   Does seem like there was some additional context in books outside Black Panther – Captain America specifically? Apparently there's not. Art style is really interesting in this series. Especially given everything that happened. Really cool seeing the Avengers Incident issue (book #8) is drawn old school for the first 6 pages.  Final Thoughts Correspondence A note about last week's episode What's Next  Black Panther from 2018.
