Hey! I’m Joey Dardano, a fun-lovin’, middle-child seeking validation on yet another platform! Help From A Hyprocrite is a beautiful mix of two things I wanted out of starting a podcast: To interview my friends, and to give solicited advice. When the guests and I tell a story or offer any advice, however, we have to own up to how we ourselves still struggle to learn and grow ourselves! I feel the biggest problem with many talking heads and advice shows out there is the fact that everyone sounds so 100% certain of the advice they’re giving, and everyone but you sounds like a genius whose got it all figured out. On Help From A Hypocrite, we’ll not only help you out, but also make you feel just a little bit less alone in your struggle. Come laugh with me and my friends, and hopefully learn something along the way.
What’s Up, Errybody! Joey here, here to check-in and see what the hell is Gucci. Today we’re talking about how to think about money, waking up early, having a bunch of different gigs to pay the bills, and more importantly, the fact that the show will be taking a break for 2 weeks so that I can get ahead of the game again! Being all over the place and only having my producer to help me with the technical side of things made it kind of hard to stay ahead of the curve of the weekly schedule I set FOR MYSELF!! So, to make sure this is still fun, doesn’t suck, and always late, I’m gonna take 2 weeks to get back in the game! Thanks for listening, thanks for keeping up, and thank you for caring!! This week on the podcast we have certified Badboy/ National Heartthrob Brendan Sagalow. There's nothing more important to say about this man than that whenever he's around, it always takes me an extra moment to catch my breath and collect myself. Wow, what a guy. After a totally hushed intro, We talk about meditating and its amazing benefits, how TM (Transcendental Meditation) and its secrecy is a bunch of BS, about being in love, stand-up comedy, what it's like doing it now and how to gauge your actual growth in this time, and everything in between. We get into some roommate horror stories, a rite of passage in New York, honestly. Now I want you spending less time reading this and more time actually listening to the episode, make sure to listen intently, with the volume up to 11, cause there are some real gems in here! You can find Brendan on Instagram and twitter at @BrendanSagalow, you can purchase his new album "Now Now More Than Ever" on itunes, amazon music, and everywhere; you can even stream it on Spotify, Apple music, and all the other places! This week we spend some time talking about deadlines, rituals, how easy it is for a whole day to pass without achieving anything, following through on your goals, and how my face looks astonishingly much better with a mustache. So, yeah, we cover a lot of ground. I feel the most important thing to take away from this week would have to do with being kind to yourself in terms of your work. In knowing when you're spreading yourself too thin. To know when enough is enough, you're only a human, living through a universal tragic time that has ripped apart our understanding of reality. Enjoy the episode, and right afterward, treat yourself to an ice cream, on me (please don't follow up on this) Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Hey, whats up Hypocrites? I hope your week is going smoothly. I have made not a single dollar working this week so both my financial and self worth have plummeted in the past several days. This week's Check-In has me divulging my inner worries on life's next move, procrastinating through cleaning, being embarrassed by audience interaction, and so much more! Come on, Check-In with me, and lets start the weekend right! (also, if anyone can help me learn how to open up my right nostril so i can breath like a regular human being, I would love that!) Well hello, hypocrites! This week on the pod we have a my good friend Nataly Aukar. Oh my lord do we share stories! Nataly is such a great hang. We talk about her learning English from an Anaconda VHS tape, her love for country music, and embarrassing stories from growing up that make you flinch. Our audience questions as us to speak on our love/hate relationship with NY weather, loving yourself, and where we’d want to tour when given the chance. Nataly and I share stories of our own personal surprise 18th birthday parties that didn’t go as planned for the planners, and we talk about how to make a friend! It's cold, It's snowing, I spend 95% of everyday inside a little box in the greatest city in the world. I hate it here. New york City just ain't what it used to be, but its no the only place going through a big change like this. I want to illuminate the fact that its not easy for anyone right now. everyone, everywhere, is having a hard time. Unless you were already immensely successful and rich and well connected before this all went down, then things just aren't happening. The world is still stalled. Opportunities have morphed and evolved, certain skills don't thrive in this economy. If you're having a tough time yourself, find time to really analyze what you're lacking, what you need to change, because I'm doing that right now and OH BOY is it a very tough growing process. However, I'm looking at myself in the future, knowing I'll be grateful for sticking through it all in the long run and not giving up. Enjoy, I'll see you on Monday! Learn more about your ad choices. Hello Hypocrites!! Wow do we have a fantastic episode for you today. We have the one and only Chris Gethard on the podcast for a nice, extended conversation that I just wouldn’t allow to end. Chris is lucky he had prior commitments otherwise we could’ve talked until dinnertime. Our lengthy conversation veers in very many directions: inspecting religion’s heavy influence on ourselves and our work, about the value of a true friend and knowing when you have one, about the creative process for Chris’ vulnerable and intimate HBO special “Career Suicide” and a whole lot more, including the stories of the two previous times we met before we officially became peers and, dare I say it, friends. Chris and I spend some time taking about absolute horror stories in comedy, the kind that make some people give up and believe this just ain’t for them, and I must say I feel a weight off my shoulders finally bringing the nightmare I went through to light. We get some seriously wonderful questions from y’all that we dive into, giving some no-holds-barred answers. I know for a fact you’ll seriously enjoy this episode, but probably not as much as I enjoyed recording it. You can follow Chris on social media at @ChrisGeth, you can check out his HBO Special “Career Suicide” on their streaming platforms, you can get his books “Lose Well” and “A Bad Idea I’m About To Do” wherever books are sold, and if that ain’t enough content for you, go ahead and follow him and keep updated for more! On this week's Check-In, we talk about maintaining momentum, Armier Hammer eating people, hollywood, the gym, and wanting to get the hell off of social media. Talking about these things alone in my room feels like I'm spiraling, but hopefully me speaking about how I'm keeping up any sort of appearances or why Armie Hammer could have possibly gotten away with being a cannibal brings you both entertainment and motivation. If not, I'm just another sucker in this digital age, thinking hes got a voice because he bought a webcam and a microphone, on sale, and got them delivered right to his little room in Brooklyn. Keep at em, y'all. I'll see you on Monday Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
We're back with our first interview of season 2, and boy does it feel great to be home again. This episode just felt like hanging out with a good friend...and thats exactly what it was! Remy is the host of her own wonderful, ground-breaking podcast "How Cum", so I feel honored having her drop on by to do my silly little show. We talk about growing up, friendship, the comedy scene, the negative traits we've grown highly aware of in others, and a whole mess of other fun topics! Remy and I really band together answering the audience's questions in hopes of changings some lives. I think if you listen intently, yours might change too. Or you'll just be a really intrigued fly on the wall for a fun conversation. Either way, you win. I'm not dead! I'm here for you, I'll never leave you like that again! We've all had a tough time these past several months, almost a whole damn year, and that doesn't account for my pre-existing conditions! Everyone has issues, and for some, there's been stretches of time where they were amplified during the quarantine. Siting at home in the stew of your own regret, guilt, anger, fear, and grief. I didn't think i was going to drop-off in the way that I did with this podcast, but in this week's check-in, I explain a bit why I did. Moving forward, this show is going to have seasons, like some other great podcasts I follow, in order to ensure quality is the main component of the show, and not quantity. Along with our weekly guests, I'm excited to introduce a new segment of ours that is completely separate from the regular show, our weekly check-ins! Just me, you, and a weight off our collective chests hopefully. I'll be taking and answering questions, talking about recent and current events, and, well, checking in with y'all. I hope you're as excited to get started again as I am, It feels good to be home Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
What's up hypocrites? This week we have overall sweetheart and good boy Tommy McNamara on the show, and boy-oh-boy did I thoroughly enjoy myself. We talk about seeing a dog get away with attempted murder while wearing a Christmas outfit, we talk about what gets us angry as two guys people perceive as happy, and most of all, WE TALK 'BOUT CHRISTMAS. I want to make sure to shoutout Tommy's podcast, which he co-hosts with Tom Thakkar, as we share the same network! we're a family baby! It's called "Stand By Your Band". WHATS UP my wonderful listeners! This week on the show we have the electric Usama Siddiquee on the show. We talk about growth, being yourself unapologetically, and coming to terms with who and what you are in this world. We also talk about our weiners a lot. Usama is someone i always know I'm going to have a hilarious and enjoyable time with, so I really looked forward to recording this today. While Usama is someone I've known for years, and have always looked up to, the conversation we've had also illuminated some aspects of his career and growth as a comic and person that I wasn't aware of, thus deepening that respect! I want y'all to enjoy the ride because this episode truly does taked wild turns and the beautiful up and downs we experience culminate in a hilarious roller-coaster ride of a conversation. you can follow Usama on Instagram, Twitter, and Tiktok at @usamastandsup, and you can also listen to his podcast, "Your Mango Bae" which he co-hosts with fellow comic Pranav Behari, on Apple, Spotify and everywhere else. This week I have one of my more sensitive and vulnerable guests, Mike Abrusci. He might not like that I said that, but we've bonded multiple times over the years over the fact that we're sensitive boys, emotional guys, we wear our hearts on our sleeves and we're scared of love! Mike is such an interesting guy to talk to because after spending just 5-minutes with him (all of which you'll be laughing hysterically) you'd be remiss not to think theres million thoughts churning inside that head of his, each one more introspective than the last. These exact thoughts are what made this episode so damn long even though I've vowed so many times in the past to get these episodes tighter and shorter. We just kept talking! So, i hope you enjoy another epic 2-parter episode of Help From A Hypocrite, you're in for a great time listening to a great conversation that i have with a great man. You can find Mike Abrusci on Instagram and twitter at @MikeAbrusci, you can sign up for Mike's amazing Newsletter "Please Enjoy"using the link in his bio, and you can listen to his own podcast "A Little Time" which he co-hosts with Diego Lopez, on Apple and Spotify! This Weeks guest, Conner McNutt, is one of my best friends. This episode is truly just us hanging out: what else were we going to do? Ask each other questions about stuff we already know about each other? I absolutely tried, and failed. We just tell funny stories,Conner orders food, we make eachother laugh, troubleshoot his audio, Conner's girlfriend Val chimes in and his dog Frankenstein won't stop barking. Its a pretty chill time. I don't know what the weather is like wherever you, the listener, are but here in New York, It's been terribly rainy, dark, and cold this past week. So a nice hang with a friend is exactly what the doctor ordered. You can find conner on Twitter at @Conner_Mcnutt and on instagram at @420naughtyboy Learn more about your ad choices. After an unexpected little hiatus, We're back!! And I explain all in the intro. Sometimes life gets to you, darnit, and you just gotta pick yourself back up, and boy did this episode with Steph do just that! Steph is a hilarious comic based out of LA, but boy do I wish she lived here. She's got an energy and fearlessness to her that I aspire to. We have such a fun conversation about LA Vs. NY, TikTok, her dog, and everything in-between. At one point, Steph's dog literally runs out of her house and we take the show on the road, it's a wild ride baby and you're lucky to be on it! I hope y'all have a fun time listening, I definitely has a great time recording this one. You can found Steph on Instagram and TikTok at @Stephtolev, you can check out her episode of "The Ringers" on Comedy Central, and look out for her Solo show "I've Always been f****d up", which she just recently live-streamed from the Dynasty Typewriter in LA! We're back with part two of our riveting episode with the one and only Donna Guerreros! If you want more info, scroll right on down to the last episode and read that, cause it's got everything ya need to know. stop readin, start listenin', ya know? This week we have Donna Guerreros on the show! Donna is a creative person who I truly respect and admire. Donna' is one of those women who knows how to get things done, whether it be putting on a show in a pandemic or starting her club, The Donas; all while maintaining her job as a nurse along with her other side hustles. Donna is our first "non-performer" guest in the show, and that doesn't prevent us from having a fun engaging conversation. You can tell i had fun based on how long the dang episode is! I kept having questions, Donna is a woman with experience and knowledge and that shows in how she talks and what she chooses to talk about. Some of these things involve how we control the weather depending on what shoes we wear, how we feel about the worth of our college degrees, and how life-altering events like Covid-19 and 9/11 inspire us as people to pursue different endeavors and force us to take stock of our lives and engage with who we are at our core. I hope you enjoy this episode, its definitely long, but its worth the listen! You can stay up to date on Donna and Her work on Instagram at @Deeshootsit and her page for her club @the.donas. I suggest you hit that follow button, there's a lot of cool stuff happening over there! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
This week I have comedian and fellow TikTok enthusiast, Ashley Gavin on the show! We talk about the beauty of this new social media landscape, how to pushback against online trolls, and what our DMs are like now that we've caught some online clout. We point out how disgusting people with soft feet who wear open-toe shoes in NYC are, and after that, we had a great conversation about therapy and meditation and how helpful that is to people who are usually very negative, pessimistic, and are constantly tearing themselves down in their head.Ashley has been practicing meditation for a couple years now and she sings its praises, whereas i just started (i can't wait to see the benefits). That being said, we believe therapists are making BANK right now, they are RAKING IN the quarantine depression money. Possibly, all of the stimulus checks were split between rent and therapy, everybody needs a place to live and nobody's doing ok (except for billionaires)! I know you'll have a fun time listening. You can find Ashley on Instagram, twitter, and TikTok at @Ashgavs, and you can find her podcast "We're Having Gay Sex" on Apple, Spotify, and wherever else you listen to your shows! This week I'm honored to have comedian and actor Dave Merheje on the show! We start out talking about his start in Windsor, Canada, through Detroit and Toronto, culminating in a story of Dave getting to watch Russell Peters in a club in Toronto before he blew up to the superstar that he is today, inspiring Dave. Dave and I talk about how cool it is when you become friends with another comic that you used to look up to and who's success and skill seemed "out of this world" initially. Dave and I get into Dating and our flaws as men and how that impacts our experience. Dave is my first guest to participate in our new segment "Say You're Sorry" and he answers very honestly. Dave and I discover throughout the episode that we truly have a lot in common, aside of course from comedy. We've both been punching bags for friends, our minds work in similar ways, and we're very energetic people so people expect us to always act a certain way. Our question this week involves being able to be comfortable with the fact that when you're a comic, a lot of your jokes involve making fun of yourself, so people are actually laughing at things you're truly insecure about, which is a pretty difficult part of the job to overcome. At the end of the episode, Dave makes me feel pretty damn good with his sign of approval, and I can confidently say this is some of the most fun I've had making this show! You can check out Dave's work on the Hulu show "Ramy" and you can listen to his albums on Spotify and Apple Music, including his 2019 Juno award winning album "Good Friend Bad Grammar". You can find Dave on Instagram and Twitter at @DaveMerheje. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
My, dare I say, best friend Lili Michele does the show this week and the chemistry is....palpable. We talk about the first time we met, astrology, fashion choices, and dating in NY. We discuss whether I'm smart or not, and if that even matters (the answer is no, though). Lili actually leaves to take a pee for a whole 3 minutes during the recording because she doesn't respect my work but I have fun talking behind her back while she's gone. Our questions this week involve getting over a real love and chasing your dreams as a comedian and actor. Overall, I think this episode is a super fun and vulnerable conversation between friends I think you'll enjoy. You can find Lili Michele on Twitter and Instagram @lilsmichele and you can find her podcast "Sas Tits" on Spotify and Apple Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Hey everybody! This week I have my friend Savannah DesOrmeaux on the pod and we spend almost two hours catching up on the past 5 months while also role playing as obnoxious Early Morning Radio DJs. So that’s very fun. We talk about dating (that’s been a frequent topic recently), TikTok, and Savannah’s 4-star rated WikiFeet. BTW, please make an account and hit her with 5 stars, she needs it. The questions this week bring forth some fruitful conversation. One about living with and loving your family despite the arguments that arise from opposing views, and another about dating in a pandemic and learning to love yourself as well as others. You can find the fabulous Savannah DesOrmeaux on instagram and Twitter at @SavannahDeso, and check out her web series “Ghost Town” on YouTube! Learn more about your ad choices. Zack is one of my favorite people, and aside from a tech issue that we eventually realized was HIS fault, I think that shows on this week's episode! Zack and i talk about haven't spent some time at home during quarantine, Zack's experience with the gay male community, and some other, very important things like robes! Zack and I share a similar plan in marrying up in life, because these jobs ain't cutting it, and our "Dream jobs' are not having one. Zack and I get a couple of great questions this week that Zack answers beautifully. these questions range from inquiring about how to become part of the queer community when you came out just before quarantine, to "what do you like most about Gabby (Bryan) and be specific?" But most of all, we learn that Zack is a complete and total psycho and used to sell Gerbils for a $1 a pop! You can find Zack on Instagram and Twitter at @quackwacko and please check out his podcast "Unabashed Podcast" which he co-hosts with past guest, Gabby Bryan! (I'm on episode 26! It's such a great, entertaining show hosted by two insane people!) Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In this week's episode (our first recorded over zoom) My good friend and guest Jenny Gorelick and I speak for WAY longer than anticipated. We were having such a good time it was hard to end! We burst with pent up quarantined energy and share our experiences about anxiety, whether it be about how we are in social circles at comedy shows and gatherings or about our overall anxiety about life and how random and unmerciful it is! Jenny tells us about her 5 month quarantine with her boyfriend, Jeffrey (super cool guy, we're going to play video games together), we talk about how we've used TV and movies to cope during this time. We touch upon mental illness, and how this time in our lives has caused many people, including myself, to face their issues, checked or unchecked, head on. Whether that be by finally putting a name to the monster by getting it diagnosed, or taking actions one has put off to tame the beast. Our questions this week (thank you to everyone who DM'd me on instagram with your questions!) involve maintaining creativity in times of transition, handling your insecurities, and living with your significant other in these wild times. Whats up everybody! This week, I've got my friend Opey Olagbaju on the show.I met Opey this past year and we became fast friends, and I think that really shows on this episode. We talk about topics that range from clothing, running, and bombing on stage for multiple different reasons. We talk about finding consistency as writers and about what it's like to have a homebase as a comic. That conversation made me pretty jealous of LA and how they have The Comedy Store. For our questions section, we have a question that could not be MORE on the nose for Opey's recent experiences with dating, followed by some good conversation about seeing red flags and loving someone despite them. I hope Y'all are in for a rockin' good time cause gosh darnit we come out SWINGIN' this week, right off the bat. This episode is a hilarious and heartfelt rollercoaster ride with one of my closest friends, Gabby Bryan. After the initial start where I am just having a BLAST learning that I can play the intro song straight into our headphones, we hit the ground running talking about our dear good friend Keith Boratko (who made the show's intro song!) and from there we barrell around all over the place. From our silly tales to the vulnerabile reflections, this episode is one of my favorites so far because Gabby brings such a generous and bright energy to the room and it really shows when you play it back. The energy just radiates directly into your brain through your speakers (or airpods if you got it like that). Follow Gabby on Instagram at @Gabbyisbryan Learn more about your ad choices. Man this episode starts off STRONG, hitting hard on delivery food and our issues with it. Especially since a delivery INTERRUPTED our recording! We get into how hard it is to maintain healthy habits like eating and the gym, how scary people who do calisthenics are Leif and I talk about what it’s like being in a relationship when your schedule is so hectic, and conflicts with your partner’s. When you do any performing art form, it seems very necessary to show your face a lot, which eats up a lot of time, making it hard to devote some to your partner Leif and I talk about some crazy injury stories, and get into how excited I am, and how uninterested Leif is, to be a dad Leif and I talk about Burnout and how hard that is for people who work within a field that requires a lot of face to face time and multiple jobs, gigs, and responsibilities, and how that burnout feels different than what you’d feel working a more stable, task-based job And just in case you’re reading this, I love you Leif. This podcast would be nothing without you! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
We're back! After a bit of a hiatus this hypocrite is back and ready to be of assistance. For this week's episode, I sat down with my buddy John Trowbridge! We talk about John’s love of martini’s and open glasses, his experience cosplaying as a rich snob in a mansion in LA, and giving a house tour to Elmo. John’s story involves him reaching the top of the political mountain after an encounter with the unflappable Nightingale on a gigantic yacht, a story that holds much more weight after learning about John's thirst for truth about the existence of the Illuminati. We hear of a murder that could’ve been, A murder with no defendent thanks to marine law. The story is a wild ride from start to finish, involving secret bookcase entryways, one-on-one meetings, and a butler with an attitude. John answers questions involving calls for writing advice, staying connected to your love of the art form you're pursuing, and ushers people to form groups that hold each other accountable. Someone asks for help brushing their teeth, and we get into keeping productive and not losing your progress and hygiene To close out the show, we compare cities. And John thinks the food in LA is better, which i believe is ABsolutely NOT true Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
First of all, I get to apologize to Mamoudou for something I have done to him MANY times. We also get into the importance Vitamin D (shoutout Saurin Choksi), we pitch an “IBS Lives Matter” movie made by Ava DuVernay, our love for Tropicana Orange Juice, feeling disconnected from the new generation already, our hype up songs and how we are at our parties. Mamoudou’s story involves his growth in learning when to take criticism, and how to understand when the criticism is useful and when other people are just trying to insert themselves into his own work. He speaks on not letting the process of getting a project made weather you down or cause you to give up hope. We talk about staying grounded in a world surrounded by other creative people who live in their own world, maintaining friendships with people outside of our fields, and keeping a relationship with who and what we are. Prophetically, We talk about how ready we are in the face of an emergency, specifically, how I lack the skills to save myself or any other lives in an emergency! We get a repeat question from Irene’s episode from the person going to a party where their Ex is, but the conversation is different here and I think that’s a fun and exciting way to show how everybody’s POV brings something different to the table! This week I sit down with one of the heaviest hitters in the game, one of my favorite people in the world, Petey DeAbreau. We hit the ground running, hittin' you with everything from freestyles, to jokie-jokes, to chip crunches on the mic. I really can't say much else that would prepare you for the ~immersive experience~ that is this episode. I really had such a great time recording with Petey because he's one those guys with whom you just never know what you're going to get, the only thing you know for sure is that you're going to have a real good time and laugh your booty off. And that's exactly what we did, and I'd venture to say I even learned a thing or three. Enjoy! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Martin and I start the video by smoking crystal meth on the mic, an ode to our lord and savior Elon Musk. We start out talking about my lack of ability to be a competent employee, and how Martin enjoyed his time working at the Target Cafe (You know, that spot in Target that sells Popcorn and personal pizzas). Martin pitches me a spin-off podcast about poop after hearing about my ongoing war with IBS. Martin stops me from doing a Bill Cosby impression before we get into the kind of friends we each had growing up, and how that shapes who we are today. We touch upon the pressures and stress that comes with living the life we chose. The late nights, the weird hours, the people, and how we work our lives around those circumstances Martin's story involves him getting into a situation where he told a joke that hurt someone’s feelings when he first started out, followed by (a real gift!) a SECOND story where he went for another shock value joke that ended up not only costing him a show but also hurting his reputation and it cost him to be a little scared of performing for a while This brings us to talk about the risk that it accompanies trying out new material and attempting to approach the line, but not cross it Overall, we have a really good discussion on what it means to be the man with the microphone in the room. In our first ever episode, Irene starts us off strong with a personal story of being born with Spinal Meningitis, and of how her Cuban mother tried to fix it by offering her to the virgin of miraculous miracles. All that to say...it’s crazy she decided to be a Stand-Up when given this second chance. I reciprocate with my own story of injury and pain (It its NOT equal) Since we’ve got 2 Cubans sitting at a table, talking about life, we naturally get into God and how committed we are in our adult lives to religion. We get into how you just got to roll with Life’s lunches, I annoy her with a bunch of emo/punk puns, and I make her rethink maintaining any sort of contact with me! Learn more about your ad choices.
