On Sunday, Israel and Hamas entered into the first phase of what could become a permanent ceasefire. Under the agreement that led to the pause, Israel will release hundreds of Palestinians, many held without charge or trial, from its prisons in exchange for the release of 98 Israeli hostages by Palestinian militants in Gaza. The deal also allows Palestinians forcibly displaced from the north of Gaza to return to that area, promises a surge in humanitarian aid to a Palestinian population that was starving as a result of Israel's siege, and leaves open the door for further negotiations resulting in a permanent ceasefire. But significant questions remain about the deal—foremost of which is whether it will lead to the permanent end of Israel's bombardment and hermetic siege of Gaza, an assault experts have termed a genocide. To discuss why Israel agreed to stop its bombing after 15 months, whether the ceasefire is likely to last, and the future of Gaza's governance, Jewish Currents senior reporter Alex Kane spoke to analysts Yousef Munayyer and Zaha Hassan. Thanks to Jesse Brenneman for producing and to Nathan Salsburg for the use of his song “VIII (All That Were Calculated Have Passed).”Further Reading“A long-awaited ceasefire has finally begun in Gaza. After months of negotiations mediated by the United States, Egypt and Qatar, Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire agreement. But its fate is already in doubt. If the agreement takes effect as planned Sunday, an initial 42-day ceasefire would bring Gaza's residents some relief from Israeli attacks that have killed more than 46,700 people there, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The ministry's toll does not distinguish between civilians and militants. In exchange, Hamas has agreed to release 33 of the hostages it kidnapped during its Oct. 7, 2023, assault on Israel. The status of the deal is not certain: On Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office cast doubt on whether it would be formally approved. Meanwhile, Israeli strikes have killed at least 77 people in the Gaza Strip since the deal was announced, according to Gaza's civil defense spokesman. At least 25 women and 21 children were reported to be among the dead.Today on “Post Reports,” correspondent Claire Parker joins us from Jerusalem to talk about the factors that finally led to a ceasefire agreement – and what the road ahead could look like.Today's show was produced by Ariel Plotnick with help from Emma Talkoff. In this episode, Claire Parker, a pediatric nurse practitioner, discusses the results of a study that examined the prevalence of anxiety and depression among adolescents with pediatric pulmonary hypertension. The project aimed to incorporate mental health screening into the standard care for PH patients, similar to what is done for cystic fibrosis patients. The results showed that 52% of the patients had symptoms of anxiety and/or depression. The study also found that females were slightly more likely to have symptoms than males. The researchers hope to incorporate mental health screening into future care guidelines for pulmonary hypertension. On this episode of Beauty Bosses, the ladies of Celebrity Memoir Book Club stop by Dr. Lara Devgan's NYC office. The aforementioned literary podcast, helmed by best friends Claire Parker and Ashley Hamilton, emerged from the Brooklyn stand-up comedy scene. Listen along as they talk Matthew McConaughey's life-changing memoir, the most surprising and unexpected celebrity memoirs, and the multifaceted impact of TikTok on reading books.
Quick Take: Madame Web should've been a fun and fantastical origin story for a dynamic comic character with real spin-off potential. Instead it's a mishmash of barely interesting plot points, disjointed visual trickery, and underwhelming performances. More than anything else, Madame Web proves it's not enough to throw all the “expected” set pieces in a movie, you actually need to know what to do with them. ** Official Synopsis: Cassandra Webb develops the power to see the future. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women bound for powerful destinies, if they can all survive a deadly present. Director: S.J. Clarkson Writers: Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, Claire Parker, S.J. Clarkson Starring: Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Celeste O'Connor, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, Adam Scott ** Madame Web, Sony's third standalone spin-off of a Marvel comic character, opened the door for the studio to fully reimagine the origins of its titular character and set the stage for robust worldbuilding in its Spider-Man Universe. The Cassandara Webb of the comics is an elderly woman, with a neuromuscular disease, connected to a life support system that resembles a spider web. She's fully in control of her clairvoyance and precognition. Webb's an exceptionally powerful mutant and infrequent supporting character in the Spider-Man comic book series. There's very little known of her beginnings. When carving a lane for future stories, it doesn't get much better than having firm grounding in source material but an otherwise clear field to play. There's something to be said for nostalgia in movie styling (we won't talk about those reshoot blunders). Setting a story in the recent past opens the way for the sleight-of-hand of soft revisionist storytelling often beneficial when telling a story with supernatural elements. For audiences, everything feels familiar and contemporary but the edges are just blurry enough to make way for a world full of magic, mystery, and untold danger existing alongside the mundane. What Madame Web gets right(ish) is blending an intentionally pulp-esque vibe into a recognizable version of the contemporary New York City circa 2003. The story moves at a digestible (and thankfully relatively quick) pace of a thriller. So it's a shame that absolutely nothing else; not direction, editing, character arcs, visual effects, cast performances, or story direction, amounts to more than a “comic movie” checklist neither the screenwriters nor the director knew how to navigate. The movie opens with a flashback, because of course it does, of a pregnant Constance Webb (Kerry Bishé) deep in the Peruvian Amazon in 1973. She's on the hunt for a spider said to have miraculous healing properties. She's whip smart, driven, and desperate. So desperate she misses all the glaring red flags that her impatient head of security, Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim), isn't really there to protect her waving in her face. Through hamfisted dialogue, a lore info-dump about a secretive indigenous people with powers, known as Las Aranas, (that would've carried more weight as naturally occurring revelations), and scenes of a furtive tent search practically lifted from Tomb Raider, it's obvious Sims' intends to acquire the spider for his own ends. The action sequences that follow shortly after the expected doublecross are a reminder that staging and filming action and stunts is a skill not all directors possess. Director S.J. Clarkson relies on quick cuts, odd camera angles, and bouncing shots of rustling foliage and blurred glimpses of people leaping from great heights to simulate action and fast-moving “spider people” traveling through the trees coming to the rescue. It's the first sign, of many, that Madame Webb's practical and visual effects are a detriment to an already poorly conceived storyline. And although the flashback is a smart entry point for Webb's origin story,

As Israel continues to wage its military campaign against Hamas, we break down why it has blocked humanitarian aid — including food — into Gaza. Hunger and disease now threaten hundreds of thousands of people in Gaza. Read more:More than 100 days into the Israeli military campaign in the Gaza Strip, the humanitarian crisis there continues to worsen. As Israel continues to block food and basic supplies from entering Gaza, the World Food Program estimates that 93 percent of people in Gaza are facing crisis levels of hunger. The World Health Organization warns that more Palestinian civilians could die from disease and starvation in the coming months than from Israeli military attacks. Washington Post Cairo bureau chief Claire Parker, who has reported extensively on the Israel-Gaza war, joins “Post Reports” to talk about why it has been so difficult to get supplies into Gaza, whether more aid is forthcoming and how a lack of aid has left Gazans on the brink of famine. The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 4: While speaking with Abby Phillips on CNN, Congressman Dean Phillips (D-MN) said he would consider using U.S. Special Forces to free American hostages being held by Hamas. Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) seemingly agreed with Phillips' suggestion—and went one step further calling for the Biden Administration to retaliate massively against Iran after its proxies launched numerous attacks against U.S. personnel in the region. Could the United States see increased military involvement in the Middle East? According to a report from The Washington Post, “[i]n late 2015, cranes at a seaport in Jacksonville, Fla., carefully hoisted U.S. military helicopters worth up to $40 million each onto a massive cargo ship set to deliver the equipment to the Egyptian government. Egypt's Defense Ministry had turned to an unusual figure to help arrange transport of the prized hardware: Wael Hana, an Egyptian American businessman who had previously run a trucking business, a gas station and a truck stop along a gritty, industrial strip in northern New Jersey… Eight years later, Hana's ties to the Egyptian government are under a bright spotlight. After a years-long investigation, U.S. authorities charged him in September with paying bribes to Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) and his wife, Nadine Menendez, in exchange for actions that benefited Egypt, including Menendez's promise to help keep military aid flowing to the North African nation. Hana, 40, lavished the couple with gold bars, checks and household furnishings between 2018 and 2022, prosecutors allege, while helping to introduce the senator to Egyptian military and intelligence officers and serving as a go-between for their communications.” You can read the full report from Shawn Boburg, Claire Parker, Terrence McCoy, and Marina Dias here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/2023/11/27/bob-menendez-wael-hana-egypt/ Annoyed by the sound of crunching chips during Zoom conference calls? The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (11/28/2023): 3:05pm- The Associated Press writes that there has been a concerning “surge in respiratory illnesses across China that has drawn the attention of the World Health Organization.” China's health ministry has claimed the uptick “is caused by the flu and other known pathogens and not by a novel virus.” You can read more here: https://www.politico.com/news/2023/11/26/china-respiratory-illnesses-cause-flu-pathogens-00128637 3:20pm- According to a report from Emily Joshua of The Daily Mail, the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) is “expected to call on Western countries, including the U.S., to drastically reduce meat consumption to combat climate change” during its climate change conference in Dubai starting later this week. The social media platform X added a Community Notes correction to Deadspin's original, inaccurate, post. Even Elon Musk felt compelled to set the record straight, praising Community Notes for “exposing deception.” 4:05pm- During an unhinged rant at the 2023 Gotham Awards, Robert DeNiro bizarrely used his acceptance speech to slam Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. 4:10pm- In an interview with Norah O'Donnell on CBS Evening News, retiring Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) said he would be happy to support any Republican candidate for president in 2024 aside from Donald Trump or Vivek Ramaswamy. 4:20pm- On Sunday, Kristen Welker and the Meet the Press panel featuring Symone Sanders and Brendan Buck suggested that Ron DeSantis should end his campaign for president in order to clear a path for Nikki Haley. 4:30pm- In a video that has now gone viral on social media, a disgruntled woman on board a flight from Florida to Philadelphia can be seen urinating in the aisle! While discussing this horrifying story, Matt reveals he flew first class last week…Rich is outraged. 4:45pm- A sandwich monopoly? Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) is alleging that Rock Capital's purchase of Subway amounts to a monopoly which will lead to higher sandwich prices—the private equity firm already owns sandwich shops Jimmy John's and Schlotzky's. The Federal Trade Commission is now investigating the $10 billion acquisition. As Timothy P. Carney notes, how could this acquisition be considered a monopoly: “Consider that Chick-fil-A enjoyed $16 billion in sales in 2021, which is equal to Subway-plus-Arby's-plus Jimmy John's” and that “non-sandwiches, of course, compete with sandwiches,” concluding that there is no way to honestly determine Rock Capital has a monopoly like Sen. Warren suggests. Fox Business reporter Madison Alworth details that U.S. taxpayers are paying more than $450 billion annually providing housing and other necessities for illegal migrants. 5:20pm- Is former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo now considering a run for New York City Mayor? 5:40pm- Many media outlets have leveled brutal attacks against Javier Milei, the president-elect of Argentina, citing his libertarian philosophy towards governance as “dangerous.” Is halting the growth of government via fiscal reform actually dangerous? 6:05pm- While speaking with Abby Phillips on CNN, Congressman Dean Phillips (D-MN) said he would consider using U.S. Today on “Post Reports,” why an earthquake in Morocco was so deadly, the anger over the government response, and what survivors say they need now. Read more:The massive earthquake in central Morocco that killed at least 2,900 people was unusual for that part of the country — and that's part of what made it so deadly. Claire Parker has been on the ground reporting from the remote villages that were hit the hardest. “It's quite different from, for example, the earthquake in Syria and Turkey earlier this year when people were still pulling out survivors days later, I think partly because of just how poorly constructed these buildings are,” Parker said.Days later, many survivors are still waiting for basic necessities, and feeling abandoned. Morocco has also been reluctant to accept outside aid, baffling foreign governments. In the absence of government aid, ordinary Moroccans are trying to fill in the gaps.“The solidarity shown by ordinary Moroccans has been astounding,” Parker said. “We've seen again and again on these really twisty, turny, narrow mountain roads that are very difficult to navigate, hundreds of small cars packed full of blankets and milk and water and diapers, all of these supplies making their way to these remote villages just out of a sense of an obligation to help.” The country declared three days of mourning nationwide as rescuers and recovery teams mobilize. Some residents described using their bare hands to pull loved ones from the rubble. Here's how and where you can make a donation to help earthquake survivors in Morocco.

Episode 216 takes us back to another time and place — more specifically, to Los Angeles circa 2009. Alli and her guest chat about L.A. Candy, Lauren Conrad's Y.A. debut and a very obvious attempt to spill *just a little* tea about her time on reality television. They discuss their personal memories of the L.C. era and the changing nature of fame and reality TV. They also speculate about what's “real” in L.A. Candy and why Lauren (and her co-author) made the decisions she made when developing the story.Claire Parker is one half of the Celebrity Memoir Book Club podcast.
