Takeaways Mental health journeys are deeply personal and often non-linear. Leif Gregersen's story highlights the importance of sharing experiences to educate others. Helping others can be a form of healing for oneself. Stigma surrounding mental illness needs to be addressed through open conversations. Education about mental health should be integrated into school curriculums. Companionship with others who understand mental illness is crucial for support. Recovery is a gradual process that requires persistence and support. Families should connect with support groups to better assist their loved ones. Real leadership isn't about being perfect — it's about taking ownership when you fall short and leading through forgiveness, accountability, and humility. In Episode 107 of the JP Dinnell Podcast, JP and Lucas break down what true Extreme Ownership looks like when you've made mistakes, hurt people, or fallen off track. Leadership demands more than strength — it demands forgiveness: forgiving others, forgiving yourself, and giving your team the freedom to learn and grow. Drawing from Navy SEAL training, combat experiences, and real-world lessons from business and faith, JP shares how the most effective leaders build trust not by pretending to have all the answers, but by owning their failures and working relentlessly to make things right. This episode explores: Why excuses destroy leadership credibility How forgiveness restores broken trust in teams, families, and relationships What happens when you choose humility over ego Why leaders must admit mistakes publicly to build stronger teams How forgiveness doesn't make you weak — it makes you unstoppable Forgiveness isn't about letting people off the hook — it's about freeing yourself from bitterness so you can lead with purpose and clarity. As JP explains, the best leaders are not the ones who never fail; they're the ones who take responsibility, learn from it, and move forward stronger. Through this discussion, you'll hear how biblical principles connect to modern leadership: from Christ's model of forgiveness to practical lessons in humility and redemption that apply on the battlefield, in business, and at home. Forgiveness and leadership go hand-in-hand because leadership is a people business — and people make mistakes. If you've ever wrestled with guilt, pride, or resentment, this episode will challenge you to look inward and take ownership. True leadership begins the moment you stop blaming others and start leading yourself. In Episode 105 of the JP Dinnell Podcast, JP and Lucas dive deep into the struggle every leader, athlete, and believer faces: how to stay focused on your mission when distractions, doubt, and setbacks come your way. Drawing on Navy SEAL training, Biblical wisdom, and real-world leadership experience, this conversation unpacks: Why motivation fades but discipline carries you through the grind How to stay on God's path even when the road feels unclear The difference between perseverance and redirection — and how to know God's will in those moments Practical strategies to overcome criticism, fear, and self-doubt How discipline builds resilience and long-term success in life, faith, and leadership Scripture references like Jeremiah 29:11, Proverbs 3:5-6, and Matthew 6:33 provide the foundation for a disciplined, purpose-driven life. Whether you're leading a team, building a business, or simply trying to stay true to your calling, this episode will equip you to move forward with clarity and confidence.

We're joined by Leif Weatherby, associate professor at NYU, founding director of the Digital Theory Lab, and author of the new Language Machines: Cultural AI and the End of Remainder Humanism, to think with us about AI, structure, and what happens when computation meets language on their own shared turf. Language Machines is easily the best book about AI written this year and is just a killer antidote to so much dreary doomer consensus, it really feels like one of the first truly constructive pieces of writing we've seen out of academia on this subject. This episode follows really well after two others — our talk with Catherine Malabou earlier this summer and the episode with M. Beatrice Fazi about a year ago (both faves). It feels like theory is opening back up again into simultaneously speculative and structural returns, powered in no small part by the challenges posed to conventional theories of language (from Derrida to Chomsky) by Large Language Models. This episode absolutely rips, literally required listening. Structuralism is so back (and we're here for it). Dr. Leif Karlstrom is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Oregon. Leif uses fluid and solid mechanics approaches to better understand how water moves through glaciers and how magma moves through the Earth's crust to erupt in volcanoes. Much of his work involves developing theoretical models to better describe these processes. In addition to his career as an academic scientist, Leif is also a professional musician. He plays violin and tours nationally and internationally as a member of bluegrass and folk music groups. When he's not engaging in scientific or musical pursuits, Leif enjoys rock climbing, river rafting, and generally spending his time outdoors. Leif Shiras returns to the show to recap the Cincinnati Open, which saw Carlos Alcaraz outlast the heat as Jannik Sinner retired in the final. Shiras weighs on the brutal Midwest conditions, what it means for Sinner as he heads to the year's final major, and how this title can give Alcaraz the boost he needs. The broadcaster also explains what makes Iga Swiatek so dangerous after she notched another big title in the Queen City, and why Aryna Sabalenka's schedule is a fascinating subplot heading into New York. Shiras also looks at the top contenders heading into The US Open, and examines whether Novak Djokovic will be in form as he aims for major title number 25. The commentator looks at the potential of Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz and Jack Draper on the men's side, and dives into female contenders Elena Rybakina and Coco Gauff, who just parted ways with her coach. And Shiras gives his thoughts on the brand-new US Open Mixed Doubles event, which has been a smash hit in terms of popularity. Hosted by Mitch Michals.

In early 1948, Los Angeles couples were terrorized by a series of robberies and car thefts committed by a criminal the press dubbed “The Red Light Bandit,” a reference to the red light he used to flag down his victims. Fortunately, the bandit's crime spree was quickly cut short when police arrested Caryl Chessman, a Los Angeles resident with a criminal history going back to his teen years.Chessman was charged with multiple counts of robbery, rape, grand theft, and because of an unusual interpretation of events, he was also charged with kidnapping. Due to the attachment of kidnapping, several of the charges were defined as a capital offense and Chessman was convicted and sentenced to death. In the years following his conviction, Chessman's death sentence became a source of considerable controversy—an already controversial sentence applied in a non-lethal case due to a bizarre application of the law. For ten years, Chessman fought the sentence all the way to the US Supreme Court, with support from a wide variety of sources, both notable and ordinary.
