Music Circle loosens up classical traditions Classical music is entering a new realm, says Akiko Sasaki, artistic director of the Howland Chamber Music Circle, which kicks off its 2026-27 season — its 34th — on Sunday (Sept. 20) with a sold-out performance by the Miró Quartet. The group last played Beacon more than 20 years ago and credits the Chamber Circle's co-founder, Gwen Stevens, with boosting its career. Diversity among players and the music is inevitable, as evidenced by this year's eclectic program. Adopting an unorthodox dress code, the Catalyst Quartet plans to play three pieces by jazz saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera during the series' final concert, scheduled for May 30. Also pushing the envelope: The cellist in the brash, young Poiesis Quartet cross-dresses, the violinists sport tattoos and each member provides pronouns. The program for the Oct. 18 gig lists two works written by composers born after 2000; a selection by Lili'uokalani, the deposed queen of Hawaii (1838-1917); and Beethoven's String Quartet No. 16. "The classical world has absorbed so many influences throughout its history, and we want to surprise people with how broad it can be," says Sasaki. "It's not stuffy and stodgy anymore." Expanding further, the Chamber Circle commissioned a song by composer Shawn Okpebhdo that evokes Paul Robeson, a classically trained vocalist with ties to the Peekskill Riots in 1949 and the late folk singer Pete Seeger, who lived near Beacon. Two years in the making, the premiere is scheduled for Feb. 21 when Trio Alfiori (piano, vocals and clarinet) performs. Harpist Bridget Kibbey's Bach to Brazil adds a percussionist and violinist to round out what is perhaps the season's most ambitious program on Nov. 14; the marketing copy evokes a "sonic voyage" to Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Germany, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. This year, the annual four-concert Piano Festival will include the premiere of a commission for Beethoven specialist Michael Stephen Brown (March 21). The chamber society is one of many underwriters, says Sasaki. Composed by Michelle Ross, the piece is inspired by the Piano Sonata No. 30, completed in 1820. The program for Grammy winner Michelle Cann (Feb. 7), known for performing historically overlooked music, along with the staples, will be announced closer to the date. Evren Ozel, 27, plans to bookend Summerland, by American composer William Grant Still, on Jan. 27 between pieces by Debussy and Schumann. "We booked Evren the day he made the final round [in 2025] of the Van Cliburn competition," which is held every four years in Fort Worth, Texas, and draws pianists from around the world, says Sasaki. "His technique is tremendous, and his playing has a maturity and intensity that draws people in." Inon Barnatan (March 7), "a regular with just about every major orchestra, is known for an intellectual, poetic approach to familiar music that makes it feel new," she says. The Chopin-heavy program will be augmented by works from Thomas Ades, John Field and Karol Szymanowski. Other small combos include the Dorian Wind Quintet (Nov. 1), a cello/piano duo (April 18) and the Maeve Trio, a violin, cello and piano ensemble, on May 2. On Sunday, the Austin-based Miró Quartet will mix things up by adopting an informal approach to fashion and onstage presence. Cellist Josh Gindele, a founding member, says the group also mines the past for obscure material, such as recording every string quartet by Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983). Though serious about the music, they converse, joke around and try to make their shows feel like "you're in a bar," says Gindele. Despite performing "thousands of times" since their last appearance for the Howland Cultural Center two decades ago, he remembers the venue "being like a library [which it was, until 1976]. We were young, so any gig was good, but it sticks out because we developed a relationship with Gwen Stevens; she and other Hudson Valley promoters went...

But when the killing unhinges the order of things, she is drawn into a network of deep web hackers — modern-day witches — who weaponise hidden truth. This stylised neo-noir game adaptation of Macbeth unfolds through smartphones, computer screens, and deep-state surveillance, immersing players as hackers in the oppressive surveillance state." After the film, the experience continues and the audience enters the world of Asteroid when they receive an SOS from one of the characters, DK Metcalf, who was left for dead. The viewer becomes a player when they are invited to aid in DK's rescue. Through speaking with an AI-generated version of DK — played by the NFL player as himself — the user determines the truth about what happened on the asteroid and sends his exact location to NASA for rescue." Artist Statement: "I've always thought of myself as an immersive filmmaker. The goal was to put the audience in the action, not to be sort of passively watching it. Now that the technology has caught up with us, I really can put the audience in the rocket. Asteroid is the story of a ragtag group of astronauts who booked a ride on a used Soyuz spacecraft. An asteroid passes near Earth. It's laden with precious metals and gems. If you can get there, you can become insanely wealthy. It's a modern gold rush." Here is the story synopsis for Constantinopoliad: "Constantinopoliad is a collective reading and audio work. A response to the archive of the poet Constantine Cavafy, the story is inspired by the blank and torn-out pages in Constantinopoliad, an Epic, the journal the teenage Cavafy began when he and his family fled Alexandria; by lost and missing queer archives through time; and by the ghosts, both erotic and historical, that visit the older Cavafy in his poems." Here are the contextual domains that are explored: The exploration of identity [1] as a person has moved from his home [4], and into a distant land [9] with some feelingsof being exiled [12], but also the implication of homosexuality [5] within the context of having to remain hidden or taboo [12]. It's dipping into the vast archive [9] of Cavafy's expressions of identity [1] and poetry and art [5], and recontextualizing as these universal experiences that are still very much relevant today [9]. Here is the Elemental Center of Gravity: 1st Center of Gravity of Air Element / Mental and Social Presence: collaboratively reading together - narrative distillation of an archive. You listening to the audio narration, but you have to negotiate how to co-read this "book" object together. The form of this "book" also deviates from normal book where it is part pop-up book, but also a flat stage to be explored with the other person. This externalized book becomes a bit of an abstracted theatrical stage for the story as it unfolds, but there are also more explicitly architectural elements to this "book" object as well. The piece also creates an implicit invitation to connect and talk with your audience partner afterwards about the piece2nd Center of Gravity of Water Element / Emotional Presence: AMAZING MUSIC + time-based narration + lighting. There's some amazing synchrony between the music, the timing of the reading, as well as the lighting. It really gives a strong sense of time. The reading of the story almost feels like a narrative podcast of sorts, but is mostly a matter of convenience of recording of the live performance so that it could be toured at immersive festivals without the burden of paying for all of the performers and musicians.3rd Center of Gravity of Earth Element / Environmental and Embodied Presence: Book like object as an architectural artifact, and has a whole spatial journey. The installation also had tables with lighting effects, but also there were projctions that were happening within the space as well. Most of the focus of spatial experience happens within the context of the architectural nature of the "book" object, but the other theatrical elements of the environment definitely help to cultivate an overall mood.4th Center of Gravity of Fire Element / Active Presence: Explore the story through various interactions. There's no narrative agency per se, although one could deviate from directly reading along with the text. There's an implicit contract to stay on course with your actions since you're negotiating the experience with another person. Archetypal Themes and Character Explored: Exploration of the "lost and missing queer archives through time; and by the ghosts, both erotic and historical, that visit the older Cavafy in his poems" Artist Statement: "My favorite response to this work was an audience member who described it as 'making love to a stranger through a book'. The work invites audiences into a sensual and concrete encounter with Cavafy's life and poems: fingers making contact with history; illumination revealing images from between the pages; sounds conjuring the ghosts of 19th century Alexandrian cabarets. With words by sister sylvester, score by Nadah El Shazly, and illustrations by Efrîn Özyetis, Constantinopoliad is a multi-sensory encounter with the past, and with forgotten stories that can haunt us into new imaginings for the present." Alors que l'Europe et la France en particulier traversent une période de canicule sans précédent, dans des pays déjà habitués aux fortes chaleurs, on tente également de s'adapter au réchauffement climatique. C'est notamment le cas de la ville de Sydney, en Australie, où l'un des moyens envisagés pour faire baisser la température, c'est d'aménager des voies vertes, autrement dit, des pistes cyclables couvertes par des arbres, pour relier entre eux les différents quartiers d'une ville qui reste essentiellement pensée pour l'automobile. Loin de seulement apporter du confort et de la fraîcheur aux habitants, ces voies vertes pourraient également réduire les dépenses de santé de plusieurs centaines de millions d'euros par an.  De notre correspondant à Sydney, Et si le secret, pour survivre dans une jungle de béton, c'était de planter des arbres ? Ce ne sont en tout cas pas les utilisateurs de la Inner West Greenway, une voie verte de 6 km ouverte en décembre dernier, presque entièrement abritée sous des arbres, qui longe d'anciennes canalisations, qui diront le contraire. À l'image de Lili, qui y passe une bonne partie de son temps libre. « Je viens marcher ici quasiment tous les jours, c'est super ! Depuis l'ouverture, il y a tellement de gens qui l'utilisent, ça fait prendre conscience à quel point nous avions besoin de ce genre d'espace. En particulier, ici, proche du centre-ville, pour les gens qui vivent en appartement. » C'est également le constat du comité pour Sydney, un laboratoire d'idées qui a récemment appelé les autorités à construire beaucoup plus de voies vertes, à la fois pour rendre la ville plus cyclable, mais aussi, et surtout, pour la rendre plus fraîche. Et alors que la population augmente et que la ville se densifie, il est essentiel pour Sam Kernaghan d'accompagner ce développement avec des îlots et des corridors de fraîcheur. « Il nous faut donner à cette population qui grandit accès à des endroits où ils peuvent nager, marcher, faire de l'exercice, qui sont au frais, accessibles à tous. » Les villes, et leurs habitants, ont tout à y gagner. Avoir accès à des espaces verts a de fait un impact positif scientifiquement prouvé sur la santé mentale. Et leur démultiplication à Sydney pourrait également y faire considérablement réduire les dépenses de santé. De l'ordre de 600 millions d'euros par an selon le Comité pour Sydney, dont l'estimation ne prend en compte que les maladies cardiovasculaires, aggravées par la chaleur.

After Lorenna Bobbitt's husband John sexually assaulted her at their home in Virginia in the summer of 1993, she retaliated by waiting until he was asleep, she decided to fight back. Following the attack, Lorena fled the house in her car and eventually pulled over to the side of the road to call 911 and report the incident, at which time she was arrested. Though salacious, this incident of domestic violence would likely have gone unnoticed by the rest of the American public; however, at the time, debates about domestic violence and marital rape were raging and the Bobbitt case came to serve as an example of the consequences and effects of that violence, for arguments on both sides.
