This week on I Want That Too, Jim Hill and Lauren Hersey look at how Toy Story 5 is already reshaping the summer box office, the Disney collector market, and the fast-food promotional landscape. Lauren digs into Lorcana's sudden surge, Disney Springs' new merch-drop rules, and the growing trading-card gold rush around Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Magic: The Gathering. NEWS • Toy Story 5 opens huge at the box office, with Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and Smarty Pants helping Disney dominate the summer conversation. • Disney Lorcana enters a new collector frenzy as older cards become harder to find and Pixar characters arrive in the Wild's Unknown set. • Disney Springs introduces new merch-drop procedures, including later garage openings, wristbands, and designated waiting areas. • Topps Chrome Disney and Marvel's Magic: The Gathering collaboration show how Disney is leaning deeper into trading cards and tabletop fandom. • Disney Store begins testing a generative AI shopping assistant designed to recommend gifts and products through natural-language prompts. In the latest episode of Scratch, Philip Edsel, VP of Brand & Creative at Ladder, breaks down why most marketing misses the mark and what separates brands that feel cultural from those that feel tone-deaf. As fitness platforms multiply and algorithms fragment audiences, Ladder's strategy isn't to chase trends. It's to listen obsessively to what members actually want—and let that drive every creative decision. We get into: → Why cultural relevance can't be outsourced (or bought from a report) → How to build culture listening into your creative process without overthinking it → Why structuring teams around culture matters more than having the right budget → The brands that win: Skims, Bandit, Nothing-and why art direction is strategy → What happens when you listen to members instead of investors The key takeaways: Self-awareness is the number one attribute of great marketing - Most work fails because it lacks it. It's not about being clever. It's about understanding how your brand is actually perceived and what conversations are happening around it. Culture listening is structural, not magical - Put 30 minutes on your calendar every week. Get obsessed with what your audience actually cares about. Make it non-negotiable. By the time most brands catch on, they're six weeks too late. Either you have the people or you don't - You can't bottle up cultural taste. Either your team feels the pulse of what's moving culture, or it doesn't. If you don't have those people, recruit differently or organize differently. Yeti structured their entire team around communities. Most brands didn't even think of it. Listen to what your members want, not what trends are screaming - Ladder runs 45-minute surveys by the thousands. They're drowning in feedback about what members actually want. That drives product and creative not investor mandates. Simplify your language - Bad copywriting is Philip's biggest pet peeve. If it's a teaser that says "something's coming"—that's meaningless. Use words you'd actually use at dinner. Momentum is found too late for legacy brands - Challenger brands can move faster because they're willing to take creative risks informed by audience data. The inflection point is real. You have to be willing to swing. Watch this episode: ▶️ YouTube: https://youtu.be/pYQH4xUeU9o Scratch is a production of Rival, a marketing innovation consultancy. On today's episode, host Mark Longo and the all-star panel break down a fascinating "ho-hum" macro day that is hiding massive, wild swings under the surface of individual single-name equities. First, the crew tests their wits with an official geography question from a 1980s Trivial Pursuit deck that leaves everyone questioning the data. Then, Mike Tosaw and Andrew Giovinazzi dive deep into the trading floor to look at the massive rotation into small caps (IWM), unusual vertical action in September VIX options, and why the tech giants (MSFT, GOOGL, AMZN) are shedding serious weight from their recent all-time highs while AI chip darlings like SanDisk (WDC) and Micron (MU) steal all the oxygen in the room. On the Trading Block & Odd Block: SpaceX Tears: Andrew's mama, Mama Lobster, is in mourning as SpaceX plunges roughly 11% in a single session. Is the air coming out of the IPO bubble, or is the premium vastly underpriced for single-leg buyers? Biotech Calls (ERAS): Heavy upside call buying hits the October 20 lines for Erasca Inc. Andrew breaks down why this early-stage oncology player is seeing big institutional accumulation. Pizza Puts (PZZA): Massive volume hits the August 25 puts for Papa John's. The panel breaks down why the entire restaurant and fast-food sector is getting squeezed eight ways from Sunday. Fiserv (FI): The continuation of the massive July 40 put saga. Is paper finally getting assigned on this "stair-step" downward trend? The Strategy Block: Mike Tosaw breaks his own golden rule of spreading to discuss why the extreme volatility and massive price extensions in SpaceX make a rare, compelling case for buying single-leg options instead of spreads.

Rory O'Neill, CMO of Checkout.com, doesn't just solve for payments- he's solving for brand preference in a crowded payments space. And he's doing it by competing on what's different, not what others do better. That insight changes everything, from how you position payments to how you build a team that can sustain growth as a challenger. In the latest episode of Scratch, Rory breaks down the playbook that lets Checkout compete with global giants. Brand preference wins 95% of B2B deals before salespeople ever show up- so your marketing owns the invisible 60% of the buyer's journey. Challenger brands win by picking one fight and building culture around it, not chasing everything competitors do. He reveals the three-part formula: focus your core business, build your culture, reinvest profit. Consumer marketing skills-data, insight, action-are B2B's secret superpower. And his rule: if you wouldn't say it at dinner, don't write it in marketing. The key takeaway: Brand preference wins deals - 95% of the time, the brands on the day-one top-five list are the ones that win. B2B buyers spend 60% of their journey before contacting a salesperson. Define your focus as a challenger - Compete on what's different, not on what competitors do better. Checkout only does digital payments to stay focused while competitors spread across multiple business lines. Three elements beat category norms - Focus on your core business, build the human operating system (culture, people, vision), then reinvest capital in new products. Consumer marketer skills are powerful in B2B - Data, insight, action, brand building, and performance marketing from the consumer world unlock B2B success. Understand stakeholder maps - B2B is complex: CTOs influence CFOs, recommenders influence buyers. Map those relationships to win. Simplify your language - Ditch jargon like "frictionless" and "seamless." Use words you'd use at dinner. Marketing becomes more interesting and understood. Marketing is logic and magic - Be both data-driven and creative. Avoid letting fiefdoms kill integrated work. Join everything together. In the latest episode of Scratch, Tracey-Lee gets into what it really takes to build trust in a controversial space, how she sells brand investment to a CFO who only speaks performance, and the Black Friday campaign where Payflex faked a data breach and somehow lived to tell the tale. The key takeaway: 1. Radical honesty is not a risk, it's a requirement In a controversial category, you have to be as loud with your rebuttals as your critics are with their attacks. Silence reads as guilt. 2. BNPL customers aren't who the headlines say they are Payflex users are not over-indebted people stretching to survive. They're actualizing. Identity-driven. The emotional need sits at the top of Maslow's hierarchy, not the bottom. 3. The two-year brand cliff is real Cut brand budget today, nothing happens for six months, maybe a year. Then sales tank. And to recover it, you spend two to three times what you cut. The lag is the weapon CMOs need to use in every CFO conversation. 4. Brief writing is a tattoo, not a tick box WATTW. What are we trying to achieve here. If you can't answer that before you brief, you shouldn't be briefing. 5. Marketing is an advocate for the market, not a go-to-market function Marketers need to be in the product room early, sometimes aggressively, because no product strategy survives contact with a customer insight that nobody bothered to bring in. 6. Learn the finances early The biggest unlock in Tracey-Lee's career was understanding what CFOs actually care about: customer equity, market share, lifetime value. Not ROAS. 7. Boldness needs justification, not just instinct The data breach campaign worked because it had a clear strategic logic behind it. Payflex is an innovator and Black Friday demands standout or silence. Brady and John open on Bitcoin Pizza Day — Laszlo's 10,000 BTC purchase of two Papa John's pizzas now worth roughly $770 million marked Bitcoin's evolution from cryptographic curiosity into a medium of exchange SpaceX's S1 filing discloses 18,712 BTC held at a $35,000 cost basis, making the company the seventh-largest public Bitcoin holder ahead of Coinbase and adding institutional weight to the largest IPO in US history Strategy crossed BlackRock's IBIT this week to become the single largest Bitcoin holder on the planet, adding another 25,000 BTC for $2 billion and out-stacking the most successful ETF in US financial history Strive launched SADA, a perpetual preferred stock paying 13% daily Bitcoin-backed dividends — Joe Burnett frames it as a new product inside an old wrapper, echoing the 1971 money market fund innovation that took decades to find its container The ARMA bill, introduced with 17 co-sponsors, would codify the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve executive order and authorize the US Treasury to buy up to 200,000 BTC per year for five years, targeting one million coins or roughly 5% of global supply Iran launched Bitcoin-settled maritime cargo insurance, a vivid example of a sovereign nation routing around the dollar system and validating Yan Pritzker's 2021 prediction that countries outside the Western axis would adopt Bitcoin first Fed minutes signal higher-for-longer rates with the market now pricing only a 1.5% chance of a December rate cut — John argues Fed hawkishness matters less in a fiscal-dominance regime where Treasury spending sets the tone Bitcoin's implied volatility hit a seven-month low as AI takes the investor spotlight, but long-term holder supply is approaching a record high — Brady and John read this as a healthy floor forming around $70K rather than weakness Mark Cuban sold his Bitcoin claiming it failed as a hedge — John pushes back that you buy hedges before the event, not after, noting Bitcoin is up roughly 650% since February 2020 versus QQQ at 200%, gold at 175%, and the S&P at 145% Harvard trimmed its Bitcoin position to roughly $120 million and exited Ethereum entirely, likely rotating into AI exposure — Brady closes with a look at Vigil Protocol, Swan's first non-Bitcoin product, an AI-powered financial life mapping tool at vigilprotocol.ai ► For high-net-worth individuals and corporations seeking to build generational wealth with Bitcoin, Swan Private is your guide ✔ https://www.swanbitcoin.com/private?utm_campaign=private&utm_medium=sponsorship&utm_source=podcast&utm_content=swan_signal_live ► Secure your bright orange future with the Swan IRA today! IRAN - On and off as usual - Cancelled a scheduled bombing? - President Trump speaking with reporters says he will know "soon" if U.S. needs to give Iran another big hit; says Gulf states are helping with negotiations; says Iran keeps agreeing to things and changing their mind; says Iran has 2-3 days to make a deal - This is the parental attempt to manupluate a child - I am going to count to THREE.... 1-2-3-4-5-6 China Trip - Chinese President Xi Jinping warned U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday that the U.S. and China “will have clashes and even conflicts” if the long-standing issue of Taiwan's independence is mishandled. - Speaking just ahead of Trump, Xi noted the global attention on the meeting, and said a major question for the two countries was whether they could avoid the “Thucydides Trap,” according to an official English translation of his remarks broadcast by CCTV. - The Thucydides Trap refers to how tensions historically between a rising and ruling power have often resulted in a war. Some Observations - Veggie Prices are off the charts --- Cauliflower $9, Carrots $6 small bag (not organic) - - Favorite produce store noticed things going bad.... Realized that people are not buying stuff PPI Inflation - HOTTTTTTTT - Headline MoM: +1.4% - YoY: +6.0% - Core PPI (ex food & energy): about +1.0% MoM - Energy was a big part, but services also saw a large move - Highest monthly increase since march 2022 --- In reaction bonds are selling off - highest on 10 and 30 year since March 2024 (10 YR Broke above 4.65) Outbreak - An Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda has been declared a public health emergency of international concern by the World Health Organization - 80 deaths were attributed to the disease. - Outbreak does not meet pandemic criteria, WHO says - Eight laboratory-confirmed cases and 246 suspected cases - At least six Americans in the DRC have been exposed to the Ebola virus, with three exposures deemed high risk WHAT? - One of the highest margin foods, pizza and pasta - Domino's Pizza, is among the pizza giants whose franchisees have filed for bankruptcy - Papa Johns: We have identified approximately 300 underperforming restaurants across North America that are not meeting brand expectations or lack a clear path to sustainable financial improvement, as well as locations where we can effectively transfer sales to a nearby restaurant - Pizza Hut, which also hasn't filed for bankruptcy (YET) , won't be left out of closings as the company's parent Yum! Brands in February said that it would close 250 underperforming locations as part of its Hut Forward plan in the first half of 2026. - PZZA down 65% over the past 5 years - The Papa John's board formally ousted founder and former CEO John "Papa" John" Schnatter in a series of steps culminating in July 2018 and March 2019 BONDS - Yields Spiking - U.S. Treasury yields spiked on Friday following a week of messy inflation data and as traders looked to price interest rate policy under new Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh. - The yield on the 30-year bond jumped nearly 11 basis points to yield 5.121%, the highest since May 22, 2025, and nearing the highest since October 2023. - Japanese long-term bond yields have surged to multi-decade highs, with the 10-year Japanese Government Bond (JGB) hitting 2.8%—its highest level since October 1996 M&A Utilities - U.S. power companies NextEra Energy and Dominion Energy announced a plan to merge on Monday in a $66.8 billion deal that ?will form one of the world's largest electric utilities during an expansion of energy-intensive data centers to support artificial intelligence. - The all-stock transaction, which is pending ?regulatory approvals, is one of the largest-ever energy mergers. - Industry consolidation - -- This year, AES Corp agreed to be acquired by a consortium led by Global Infrastructure Partners and Swedish ?private-equity firm EQT AB for $33.4 billion. ---- That followed Constellation Energy's $16 billion deal with Calpine and Blackstone's $11.5 billion deal for TXNM Energy last year. SOYBEANS - Trump's visit to China yielded little in the way of anything - The United States expects China to sign up to buy "double-digit billions" worth of U.S. farm goods following a summit between Presidents Donald ?Trump and Xi Jinping in Beijing, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said on ?Friday. - Greer noted the 25 million metric ton per year soybean deal agreed last October and said the U.S. also expects to "see an agreement for double-digit billion purchases of ags over the next three years per year ?coming out of this visit." - Soybeans and other commodity prices moved higher on Monday as the news was disseminated. CHYNA Deals? - Looks like Boeing got an order of 200 more planes from China. ---- The problem is that was much less that was expected -- Boeing was down on the news. - Some murmurs about China buying more energy (oil, gas) from US - - - There was also something said about President Xi asking about the US intentions of Taiwan Bessent - Transitory - Even with recent inflation news universally bad, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expects price pressures to ease soon, just in time for new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh to take over. -- Why are we listening to this crew? They have been wrong about everything - but say it with such confidence. - WAIT FOR IT...... - “I firmly believe that nothing is more transient than a supply shock, and we can, we can look through that, because before the Iranian conflict began, core inflation was coming down. - He noted that he sees substantial disinflation ahead ----- IF there is substantial disinflation that would be bad news as the economy will be slowing precipitously - could be problematic - so it is not clear what he is so excited about Earnings - NVDA is going to be position earnings Wednesday after the close - So far Semiconductor companies and storage companies have been saying that the orders keep flowing in and - Wall Street analysts project EPS of $1.78 on revenue of $79.2 billion, representing a year-over-year revenue increase of roughly 80%. Open AI - Musk - R0und 1- Musk looses on what looks to be a technicality - Perhaps jurors were miffed that he skipped closing arguments and went to China instead (to be the the Trump Posse) - Naturally he is already discussing appeal Even more Create Financing - Google (GOOG/GOOGL) and Blackstone (BX) are drawing significant investor attention following the announcement of TPU Cloud, a new U.S.-based joint venture designed to commercialize GOOG's Tensor Processing Unit infrastructure at greater scale. - The partnership underscores the accelerating arms race in AI infrastructure, while also highlighting how hyperscalers are increasingly turning to alternative financing structures to fund the enormous capital requirements tied to next-generation AI compute expansion. Fuel Shortages - In case anyone thought otherwise - the Straight is till closed. Fuel Running Low - India: Severe LPG (cooking gas) shortages, rationing in many areas - Pakistan & Bangladesh: Critical LPG and diesel shortages - Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia): Jet fuel & diesel shortages, flight cuts - South Korea & Taiwan: Tight jet fuel and refined product stocks - Europe (especially UK): Jet fuel critically low, risk of flight cancellations - Africa (South Africa, Nigeria, parts of East Africa): Jet fuel and import shortages - CUBA - OUT Cooking Fuel (LPG) Shortages - India: Severe shortages, long queues, rationing - Pakistan: Critical LPG shortage, heavy rationing - Bangladesh: Major shortages, price spikes - Nepal & Sri Lanka: Supply cuts, half-filled cylinders common - Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, etc.): Tight supplies and high prices - Africa: Sharp price increases, reduced affordability - Europe/US: Mostly higher prices, no major physical shortages Love the Show? In this episode, everything old is new again including Pizza Hut. The Preakness was a thing and a horse won. NFL teams get creative with their schedule releases, and a minor league team does a nothing night promotion. A restaurant charges a reversal fee, a soccer ball you can put beer cans in, the only good thing Papa Johns' offers is now in stores, using a spoon to put your phone on DNB and more!
On this week's Extra Serving, NRN editor in chief Sam Oches and executive editor Alicia Kelso discuss the latest restaurant industry news, including Jack in the Box's CEO transition, Papa Johns' big retail play, and results from the most recent Top 500. First up is Jack in the Box, which replaced CEO Lance Tucker after just over a year on the job with interim CEO Mark King — former CEO of Taco Bell. Sam and Alicia share whether they're surprised by this move and discuss what King may need to do to get Jack in the Box back on track. Next they tackle Papa Johns, which has made several moves lately, from testing drone delivery to partnering with the “Toy Story” franchise to providing a home for stranded Spirit Airlines loyalty points. This week it also announced that it would roll out its signature garlic sauce to retail shelves. Will this sway loyal fans — or cannibalize restaurant sales? Sam and Alicia discuss. They then turn their attention to the most recent Technomic Top 500, which reveals sales and unit count information for the 500 biggest chains in the U.S. Sam and Alicia unpack the results, and particularly performance in the pizza, burger, and chicken categories. Which brands and categories won in 2025 — and which are on the fence? Listen to find out. Finally, we share an interview between senior food and beverage editor Bret Thorn and Naya head of R&D Khalfani Coicou. For more on these stories:Jack in the Box names Mark King interim CEOPapa Johns' signature garlic sauce will hit retail shelvesThe Top 500 RestaurantsSubscribe to Technomic Ignite by clicking here.
US equity futures are modestly lower, Asian markets are broadly weaker, led by sharp declines in South Korea, while European equities are also lower. Markets were supported by continued AI-driven momentum, with strength in semis, networking, and select tech names offsetting mixed performance across big tech and weakness in memory stocks. Broader sentiment remained constructive with major indices extending to fresh highs, though underlying concerns persist around narrow market breadth and elevated positioning. Rates remain a key overhang after this week's hotter inflation signals, while limited incremental progress from US-China discussions and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty continue to cap upside. Companies mentioned: Anthropic, OpenAI, Papa John's International

In this episode of Scratch, Viren sits down with Misbah Uraizee from Nectar Social to dismantle one of marketing's most persistent myths. The truth? Organic and paid media are complementary engines, and brands that still silo them are leaving serious growth on the table. Misbah breaks down the post-iOS 14 reality and reveals the exact playbooks modern challenger brands are using to scale today. In this episode, we cover: The Post-iOS 14 Reality: Why the entire class of brands built on cheap paid ads simply no longer exists. Year-One CPG Playbooks: What the fastest-growing brands actually do in their first year (hint: it has nothing to do with media spend). Killing Vanity Metrics: Why follower count is the metric that refuses to die—and what you should be measuring instead. Hey Voices from the Bench community! Jessica Love here, sending a shoutout from Utah! If you're passionate about creating natural, beautiful smiles—but want to simplify your workflow without sacrificing aesthetics—this is for you. I'm honored to be part of Ivoclar's development team introducing a powerful new stain and glaze system featuring Structure Paste, IPS e.max Ceram Art. Create stunning depth and lifelike color in as little as one firing. Let's continue to innovate, simplify, and create meaningful change—one smile at a time. CAM has been a major topic lately, and a lot of that conversation keeps coming back to hyperDENT. But instead of just talking about the software itself, it's worth looking at real-world experience. Imagine USA has been using hyperDENT in their own lab for over 15 years. That kind of longevity says a lot—they're not just selling and supporting it, they're relying on it in their own production every single day. That's what really sets them apart. This week, Elvis and Barb sits down with Katherine Steinbock-Dyke of Whip Mix to talk legacy, leadership, and the evolution of a family-run powerhouse in the dental industry. As part of the Steinbock lineage, Katherine shares what it was like growing up around the business—from selling Girl Scout cookies on the shop floor to eventually stepping into the CEO role. Her journey wasn't a straight line, starting instead in international business and corporate HR before finding her way back to Whip Mix and working her way through multiple roles across the company. The conversation dives into the realities of running a multi-generational company in a rapidly changing industry. Katherine talks about balancing tradition with innovation, from gypsum and articulators to digital workflows and resin development. She opens up about the challenges of staying relevant, the importance of continuous improvement (hello, WIN program), and what it really means to lead a team she genuinely cares about. Along the way, there's plenty of classic bench banter—everything from assembling pizzas at Papa John's to the chaos of early 3D printing workflows and navigating massive trade shows like IDS. The episode wraps with a look at where Whip Mix is headed, Katherine's focus on reconnecting with labs and customers, and how the next generation is shaping the future of dental manufacturing while respecting its roots.Special Guest: Katherine Steinbock-Dyke.
