The resource highlighted on this episode of HubTalk is The Dynamic Heart in Daily Life: Connecting Christ to Human Experience by Jeremy Pierre. On Amazon Pierre’s books is described as such, “Our approach to counseling and personal ministry is often lopsided—we treat people as minds to be taught or problems to be fixed, moving too quickly toward applying biblical solutions without taking the time to love people well and understand their experiences and hurts. The Dynamic Heart in Daily Life provides a comprehensive view of how the heart works and how Christ redeems it. It is a model for helping the person in front of you better understand their tough experiences and who they are in light of who Jesus is. Pierre’s holistic view of counseling—shaped by his work as a counselor, pastor, and seminary professor—equips readers to help others understand how everyday beliefs, desires, and commitments shape how they respond to life’s biggest struggles, and how an active relationship of trust in God is the foundation for lifelong change.” Tim also wanted me to mention Paul David Tripp’s book Parenting; 14 Gospel Principles That Can Really Change Your Family, his book on marriage What Did You Expect: Redeeming the Realities of Marriage, as well as Stuart Scott’s book The Exemplary Husband: A Biblical Perspective, and Martha Peace’s book The Excellent Wife: A Biblical Perspective. Gospel Centered Youth Ministry: A Practical Guide is edited by Cameron Cole and Jon Nielson and is a book that has been a great encouragement to this ministry. Amazon states of this book, “Youth ministry is an essential part of most evangelical churches. And yet, there is a surprising lack of resources written specifically for youth workers focused on viewing all aspects of youth ministry through a gospel-focused lens. Featuring contributions from a host of experienced youth workers from a wide variety of churches, this how-to manual offers guidance related to every facet of youth ministry, from planning short-term mission trips to working with parents. Theologically rooted yet eminently practical, this handbook will equip youth leaders to effectively shepherd the young people under their care—training them to live faithfully in their homes, churches, and schools.

Here is what is on the back of the book: “There’s only one thing that has the potential to bring lasting change to students’ lives: the gospel of Jesus Christ. In this guidebook for youth ministry leaders, a host of experienced youth workers lay out a vision for the gospel as the center of every facet of ministry to young people. Offering practical guidance related to teaching, implementing small groups, interacting with parents, leading mission trips, building community, and more, each chapter equips youth leaders to effectively address students’ hearts and see God work in and through their lives.” HubTalk Show Notes S1E4 The Benefits of Expository Preaching: “I am a middle-aged guy who is an expository preacher” http://youthandfamilyhub.org/podcasts/
