Every church should be a safe space for everyone who comes in. Every church should also be equipping people to confront the powers of darkness and help those in trouble. Unfortunately, far too many churches are unsafe internally, which leaves them unprepared to confront external dangers. An unsafe church creates a toxic environment that works against the gospel. A safe church is battle-ready to combat the worst of the world's problems. Make My Church Safe by respected pastor, Sam Rainer, is designed to be a brief and general overview of the best practices regarding church safety for a broad audience. Sam Rainer serves as president of Church Answers. He is the co-founder of Rainer Publishing, and he also serves as lead pastor at West Bradenton Baptist Church in Southwest Florida. Sam has written hundreds of articles for several publications. He is a frequent conference speaker on church health issues. Sam holds a BS in Finance and Marketing from the University of South Carolina, an MA in Missiology from Southern Seminary, and a PhD in Leadership Studies at Dallas Baptist University. I have just finished reading a very 2002 interesting book The Case for Christ, written in Evangelical style by Lee Strobel. One of the chapters was about how Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies of the Messiah, for which Mr. Strobel interviewed Mr. Louis S. Lapides, a Jewish convert to the Christian faith who now has a B.A. in theology from Dallas Baptist University and an M. Div. and a Master of Theology from Talbot Theological Seminary and who is now senior pastor at Beth Ariel Fellowship in California.
This is the first in a series of three episodes with Doug and Stacee Goetzinger. Don't miss this incredibly raw, honest conversation with my high school classmate, Doug, and his wife, Stacee, about Stacee's lifelong battle with mental illness. In this episode, Stacee shares about her childhood that was full of family dysfunction, including numerous moves, being malnourished as a child and her mother's suicide attempts. Stacee talks about her disordered eating in college at Dallas Baptist University and how she worked so hard to have a “new life”. Stacee and Doug met in college, and Doug takes about his lack of knowledge and the shame messages he received about mental illness from his family of origin. As a young married couple, Stacee experienced a miscarriage after a serious car accident, followed by complications after surgery. This episode concludes with Stacee divulging a pivotal moment when she attempted suicide in 2004 that resulted in an in-patient hospital stay.
