Danelle, a professional endurance athlete, was out for a run when she fell off a cliff, plummeting 60 feet to the ground and shattering her pelvis. Unable to drag herself out of the canyon, her pup Taz refused to leave her side. Until she told him to. 

Tonya Dunning started her business to get the word out about fidget quilts. Since then she has expanded her line with other fidget items. She learned how to write quilt patterns and realized that she loves editing and writing. So she not only writes her own patterns but is able to edit patterns for other quilt designers. Dear Johnny, My name is Amy and I've been a Med Tech at local nursing homes for the last 14 years. My husband works fulltime at a manufacturing job in the caves. We are really struggling this year. Two weeks ago, my position was eliminated at the facility I've been working at. After an interview yesterday, I will be back at a new nursing home starting this Friday. But in the downtime, my husband was laid off for a week. When work is slow they just don't go in (but he is back at work this week). The gap in funds has put us behind. We managed to pay December rent, but January is due on the 1st. My electric and gas are also behind. I'm also writing to you about my beautiful little boy, Paxton, who's in the 3rd grade and turned 9 on December 10th. He is having a rough time. In kindergarten, he was diagnosed with language and learning disorder. He has trouble comprehending language, instructions, and understanding simple tasks. He falls behind very quickly. He goes to school and has IEP classes (Individualized Education Program), but he feels different. He gets quiet when he doesn't understand, he's socially awkward, has trouble making friends, and gets picked on. He constantly calls himself stupid and I hate it. I am working on getting him into counseling. It's sad to see his confidence go from 100 to 0. Things are so tight with bills and I just want a little something under the tree for him from Santa. Guest Dr. Peter Liljedahl is a Professor of Mathematics Education in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University and author of the best-selling book, Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics (Grades K-12): 14 Teaching Practices for Enhancing Learning. Peter is a former high school mathematics teacher whose work emphasizes collaborative learning for a more effective mathematics education.  Most recently, he received the Læringsprisen [Learning Award] for Changing the way we think about Education in Denmark (2022). We know our youngest learners must develop the necessary critical thinking skills to navigate a landscape where AI will be ubiquitous. So, gear-up, fellow ed-tech explorers, as we embark on a journey through bytes, and building blocks. Moment of Zen: There are very few human beings who receive the truth, complete and staggering, by instant illumination. Most of them acquire it fragment by fragment, on a small scale, by successive developments, cellularly, like a laborious mosaic. - Anais Nin   The Rundown: Thoughts on Access vs. Exposure in regards to AI in schools Generative AI has potential benefits for education and risks that must be thoughtfully managed.   Early Elementary - Bite sized digital citizenship, scaffolding to big ideas AI is not a human “Peek under the hood” to see how these things work Critical Thinking  AI hallucinations AI created images Slow down and self reflect AND Seek facts and evidence (5 core dispositions of digital citizenship) Not directly on AI systems - under 13   Later Elementary Problem solvers, if we aren't careful, they will learn to rely on this kind of tech rather than solving their own problems Ask ChatGPT questions, but the teacher is always in the drivers seat. Spend a LOT of time thinking critically about the answers Not directly on AI systems - under 13   Middle School  CAUTION! “Over 13? Let's get them on AI!” Developmentally what do we know about middle school brains?  They lack impulse control. Set guardrails and limits.  Exercises in which students ask a generative AI chatbot to answer a question or write an essay and then critique it—looking for factual errors, etc. “It should be used as a tool to complement and challenge the critical-thinking skills that come online at this age,”    High School High school students are fast becoming sophisticated users of programs like ChatGPT. Teachers may feel their main duty at this stage is to police students and make sure they're not using ChatGPT, Photomath, and similar technologies to do their assignments. But experts say that educators have a more important role to play: primarily, to teach students the limitations of the technology. The text and images created by generative AI programs, for example, can be plagued with biases, stereotypes, and inaccuracies. “Exercise your natural suspicions. Doubt the machine. You knew your friend and her husband have been having trouble, but you didn't know it would end up this way, and now you're wondering how best to show up for her.
