Today, we are kicking off a very special mini series called Men of May: Stories of Women's Impact and Inspiration.   The month of May holds particular significance as we celebrate the profound influence of mothers and women everywhere. While we typically feature the unique and powerful stories of women, in this exciting mini-series, we turn the spotlight onto men who the Lord is using in mighty ways. Each week in May we will hear their stories, while paying tribute to the remarkable women God has strategically placed in their lives. We will highlight and honor the invaluable role these women play in uplifting, encouraging, and inspiring our men on their journeys.   We kick off our series with my great friend Jeff Simmons. Along with being an author and speaker, Jeff is the Founding and Senior Pastor of Rolling Hills Community Church in Nashville, TN and serves as the President of Justice and Mercy International.   I had the privilege of working with Jeff and Lisa many years ago. He has had a profound impact on my life and I have been able to see firsthand how the Lord called Him to great Kingdom work and surrounded Him with amazingly gifted, wise and strong women who walk alongside him in ministry.   If you wonder what your purpose is or ever feel like your job, giftings or role is mundane or even trivial - this episode is for you. Today, we take a deep dive into how the Lord has a calling and a purpose on each life, exactly where you are. And He is using right where you are today with whatever talents you have today in whatever circumstances you are in today to accomplish His work in a bigger story. Our job is to simply lean in and let Him work. In the hands of the One who can do “immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine”, the ordinary becomes extraordinary. So grab a cup of coffee and join me as we hear Jeff's story.   For more information Jeff, visit https://www.jeffsimmons.org

She is also the Executive Director at Justice & Mercy International (JMI). Mary Katharine shares the huge impact COVID-19 had on JMI. JMI faced many challenges, unknowns, and legal problems during the pandemic. Even through the midst of COVID-19  she expresses how people jumped in to help.  They were able to see so many people answering the calling God had for them. God taught Mary Katharine to trust him in a deeper way at this time. She expressed how she took one step at a time and saw God fulfill each of these steps. Mary Katharine also shares a little bit of her story. After college Mary Katharine went to seminary for 2 years. Still not knowing her full calling, she went back home and got a job at Lifeway. She was invited to join a bible study, which happened to be the very beginning of Rolling Hills Community Church. She shares how at the very beginning of RHCC they went to Moldova. Moldova is where she found out that God was calling her to minister to the orphans. She developed such a huge heart for these kids and knew that it was from God. She shares how JMI was the best decision she has ever made. Mary Katharine's biggest concern with JMI right now is the Russia and Ukraine situation. She calls people to pray for the people of Moldova. Mary Katharine encourages us to be a blessing to someone around us today. She says there was a moment in her life where if she wouldn't have taken the opportunity, she would have missed a front row seat to the greatest blessing that God has called her to. Is there a specific time in your life where this has happened to you as well?

Today we have a special podcast for you, as we wanted to share with you a live portion of the Versus Conference that happened on Thursday at Rolling Hills Community Church. So, you'll be hearing from Pastor Jeff Simmons, as he dives into the story of Elijah found in 1 Kings 18-19.From fighting the urge to follow what culture says to staying faithful and pure in the midst of temptation to struggling with his own insecurities and battles, Elijah faced many challenges in his lifetime, but even through it all, he found God to be his faithful Rock, and he found another Christ-following man to fight with him in battle. We, too, will face many challenges, temptations, and trying circumstances because we're all in a battle – each and every day – with a real Enemy. But, like Elijah, we were created to walk with God and walk with other men as we face our everyday battles. In a matter of moments, Elijah went from staging and witnessing one of God's large-scale miracles against the worshippers of Baal, to fleeing alone to an empty cave full of fear, worry, and anxiety. If someone with the resume of Elijah, who God spoke to and worked miracles through, discovered that he couldn't handle life alone, how much more do we need to come to this realization? As men, we face battles every day. Our careers, marriages, how we raise our children, relationships, our mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health – all present unique challenges. We live in a culture that would have us shoulder this responsibility alone, but Scripture shares a different truth: “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” – Proverbs 27:17Even a man like the prophet Elijah struggled when he tried to shoulder the burden alone. But in the face of Elijah's struggles, there are lessons to be learned: Stand Strong for the Lord, even when it is unpopular. Elijah saw the destruction that worshipping other gods brought and wasn't afraid to challenge those around him to show God's strength. Listen and Pray. God's triumph on Mount Carmel was a spectacle seen by hundreds and when the dust had settled, Elijah began to fear the opponents who were still left. At first, he tried to handle this alone, but the Lord made it clear that he could not. In fact, he never had, God was always with him. Who better to take with you into battle than the Lord of the Universe? Invite other Men to the Walk. After God came to him in the cave, Elijah set out and found a fellow brother to walk alongside him; someone to pour into, someone to hold him accountable, and someone to encourage him in his mission. God is with you in whatever battle you are facing and tells you: Don't Go Alone! When we isolate, we put ourselves and our families in danger. If you're struggling or think you can handle everything on your own, lay that down at the feet of Jesus. Don't let the enemy gain a foothold in your life, in your marriage, in your children's lives. Right now is our time to make a difference. Man-up and take others into the battle with you.

On today's episode of the podcast Alan sits down with Jeff and Terra Mattson for a great conversation about warning signs leaders need to be aware of and pay attention to. Jeff and Terra recently spoke at our Healthy Leaders Summit.  About Jeff and Terra Living Wholehearted founders Jeff & Terra Mattson are passionate about living lives that reflect integrity, healing, and authenticity. They met in 1998 at Seattle Pacific University where they first began to hone their skills and passion for leadership and relationships under Psychologists and relationship experts Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott, Theologians Drs. Tim & Kerry Dearborn and Dr. Rick Steele, as well as attorney and change-agent, Dr. Skip Lee. Later influences have included CEO & Executive Director of the Charitable Murdock Trust Dr. Steve Moore, Bill Thralls and Bruce McNicol of Trueface Ministries, Dr. Michelle Watson-Canfield of the Abba Project, Dr. Ken Canfield of the National Center for Fathering, and their own Pastor and his wife, Bill & Kathy Towne. Together, Jeff & Terra have over 20 years of experience in the helping professions and leadership development. Jeff holds a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington and has decades of experience as a leader in start-up companies, family businesses, and non-profit organizations including universities and ministry settings. Since 2011, he has worked with business and organizational leaders to develop their potential and solve the people-issues that keep them up at night!  He is master-level certified in the Core Values Index (CVI) and a certified facilitator of Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott’s SYMBIS program (Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts).  Some of his organizational development clients include TriMet, ASSIST International, Bridgewell Resources, Subway, Stoel Rives Law Firm, The Dentist Off Main, Door to Grace, and Rolling Hills Community Church. Terra holds a master’s degree in Marriage & Family Therapy from George Fox University in Portland, Oregon. She is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist and Licensed Professional Counselor and now works as an executive coach. For the last fifteen years, she has run a thriving private practice while presenting to women, couples, and leaders in various settings including the American Association of Christian Counselors World Conference (2009, 2011, 2017). She is the Clinical Director for Living Wholehearted Counseling and has served as an adjunct professor with George Fox University’s Graduate Counseling Department. She has previous experience in community mental health, human resources, entrepreneurship, and pastoral/church ministries. She is the author of Courageous: Being Daughter Rooted in Grace (David C. Cook, 2020) and the visionary for the Courageous Gathering, a virtual conference-on-the-go resourcing women for the issues of today.  Together, Jeff and Terra co-authored Shrinking the Integrity Gap: Between What Leaders Preach and Live (David C. Cook, 2020) and founded a global movement, Courageous Girls, an online resource to help moms navigate the needs of their daughters at every stage of their growing years. They are the co-hosts of the Living Wholehearted Podcast and run the Living Wholehearted Lodge and Retreat. They truly enjoy having to live what they preach as they teach, speak, write, and lead together.  The Mattson’s and the Living Wholehearted Team are a trusted resource for the community. Many people ask how counseling, leadership coaching, and organizational development all go together. It’s simple. Though we all try to compartmentalize our lives, we were never meant to live that way. Attempting to segregate our heart from our mind, or our work from our home, or our pain from our story, impacts all of our relationships, with ourselves, God, and others. Combining the disciplines of counseling, coaching, and organizational development makes for a well-rounded approach that is rarely offered. Their clinical team of counselors help those who are ready to embrace their pain and walk towards wholeness. Their executive coaches and organizational leadership team come alongside business and organizational leaders who seek to help their people thrive at work and life.  Often this means helping leaders unravel the complexities of relationships within their particular venues. Whether a family or a large organization, all are systems made up of the most valuable resources…people. Living Wholehearted was formed to help these systems thrive, and then influence for the greater good. Jeff & Terra currently live outside Portland, Oregon raising their two teen daughters. In their spare time, they love adventures in the great outdoors, including fly-fishing, camping, and outdoor movies. Jeff is a singer/songwriter and lover of all things college football (Go Ducks!). Terra enjoys painting with her youngest daughter or reading a book alongside with her oldest. She loves deep conversations alongside a gooey caramel latte and long walks on the beach (with or without Jeff). Some of their favorite authors and thinkers include Bob Dylan, Henri Nouwen, Dietrich Bonheoffer, the guys at Trueface Ministries (Bill, Bruce, & John), Curt Thompson, and of course, C.S. Lewis. Connect with Jeff and Terra Living Wholeharted Take your next right step Leadership Unboxed Right Side Up Journal Explore Coaching

Most youth pastors only make it 2 years and we would love to see this statistic change. Pastors Jen Guldbranson and Tyler Eaton bring authentic and rich wisdom for parents, teens, and for those serving today. And… they happen to be our daughter’s youth pastors at Rolling Hills Community Church, just outside Portland, OR. So we are biased.   Thank a Youth Pastor today. They need our encouragement these days. Learn more at www.rollinghills.org or follow @rhstudents_ms    If you are a youth leader, grab Shrinking the Integrity Gap: Between What Leaders Preach & Live (at any retailer) and use this as a guide to help you navigate these rougher times. Infact, in the early chapters, we share some of our own experience as youth pastors in the heart of Seattle,WA and how that shaped much of what we do today. We are rooting for you!

What We Heard & What It Means: Alex, like any of us, is a man with a past and a story: tragic occurrences, painful addiction, and even a childhood diagnosis. All this could have drawn Alex far from God, but through it all there was a sense that God was always in pursuit. Like many men, Alex needs to see things and figure things out for himself in his own time. Ultimately, what we heard was the story of a man who, by God’s power, overcame a great deal, and surrendered himself to Christ. Now, he leads his family, studies God’s word, makes church a priority, helps inmates with recovery and serves his community.   Alex is a man who is not afraid to share his story, even bear the parts that are difficult and shameful. It’s  a chance to give God the glory and illustrate His power to save and redeem things that seem beyond hope. God continually pursued Alex through relationships with His people. God provided mentors, pastors, and even a persistent neighbor [MLN guest Peter Goodwin] to point Alex to salvation and ultimately his surrender. It was Peter that eventually helped Alex connect back to church and even follow through with believer’s baptism, a step of faith that had eluded Alex for years.   What we Do Next: Many times, MLN leans toward leadership lessons we can implement at home and in the workplace. These are certainly present here. However, this one leans towards a lifestyle of evangelism, sharing Christ with others. Alex’s story is a reminder that there are people everywhere who need us to faithfully, persistently, share Christ and invite to church, starting right next door. This should be a motivator for us to readily and willingly share Jesus without fear. Alex’s story also reminds us that there is always hope, and that it is a process. If any of us are starting 2018 in a place of pain, fear, or difficulty, Christ is the answer.   MLN Connections: To kick off the year, here are some resources provided by Rolling Hills Community Church that we would love to make available.   Counseling ServicesSalvation & Baptism Next Steps of FaithDiscipleship & Spiritual GrowthFinancial Peace & FreedomMarriage Support & Family Equipping   If you would like to pursue any of these options or if you need help with anything else please reach out and connect with Nic Allen, Discipleship Pastor.

We also mentioned David Murray’s book Exploring the Bible: A Bible Reading Plan for Kids, which is not only a reading plan but is set up to give kids the opportunity to see the big picture of the Bible’s message. Discipleship was another topic we discussed and gave David Platt’s book Follow Me: A Call to Die. A Call to Live, which gives us the place where discipleship begins in what following Christ really is. Last, we mentioned Mark Dever’s book Discipling: How to Help Others Follow Jesus, which is a book from 9 Marks that show how we are to be obedient in making disciples or to show what it means to help others follow Christ in everyday life. HubTalk Show Notes S1E5 A Strategy for Family Ministry: “To leverage the family where discipleship happens” http://youthandfamilyhub.org/podcasts/ From the Hub: For Youth & Family Ministry this is HubTalk a ministry based podcast that is based on conversations with those in children’s, youth, and family ministry. Overwhelming and growing concerns around anxiety, identity, sexuality, and gender confusion are a few of the topics that we are venturing down today. Join us in this honest, real and thoughtful conversation as we seek to understand the current state of the Church (capital C) and the cultural needs of our times. Aaron has been the Worship Arts Pastor at Rolling Hills Community Church in outside Portland, OR since 2003 where he leads worship and shares teaching responsibilities. Before pastoring at Rolling Hills, Aaron spent several years in Nashville, TN working as an accountant for RCA/Sony/Arista Records, as well as performing on stage and in the studio. He's been writing and leading music for the greater Church for over 25 years, exploring the unique role that music plays in our understanding of God and our connection to Him. In 2016, he released an album called ‘HYMNS' that revisits many of the songs that were formative in his own faith journey and are now part of his family's life. He's finishing up his Master's in Applied Biblical Leadership program at Western Seminary and is married to his beautiful bride, Christina and raising three teen daughters where he tries to assail them with his quality Dad Jokes.Aaron DoerrInstagram: @doerrjamswebsite: doerrjams.comLink to his Hymns album Life together by Dietrich Bonhoeffer I am not my ownI am not my own lyricsStory behind the songWe LOVE that you've decided to join us this week for the Living Wholehearted Podcast.
