While the world celebrates Pride Month, Christians must be careful not to focus on one visible sin while becoming blind to the pride, immorality, drunkenness, gossip, dishonesty, and worldliness that often exist in our own lives. God calls His people not to celebrate or excuse sin, but to expose the deeds of darkness and find their identity, confidence, and joy in Jesus Christ alone. The rainbow is not a symbol of human pride, but God's covenant, faithfulness, and mercy toward a fallen world.
In this sermon, we turn from the theory of Christian education to the practice of Christian formation, asking how wisdom actually moves from one generation to the next. Proverbs teaches us that wisdom is caught before it is taught, transmitted through imitation, forged through faithful friction, directed through deliberate training, and protected from rival voices that would lead our children away from the fear of the Lord. Yet our hope is not in perfect pedagogy, but in Christ Himself—the Wisdom of God made flesh—who has saved us by grace and now equips us by His Spirit to raise children who know, love, imitate, and follow Him.
In this episode, David takes us behind the scenes at the Statehouse to the moment when the "Success Sequence" bill was resurrected at the eleventh hour during his desperate time of prayer. Then, Aaron breaks down a massive win for election security: a constitutional amendment heading to the November ballot to officially close the mail-in loophole and permanently lock down voter ID laws. After the news, the hosts take time to celebrate that The Narrative is officially five years old! Take a look back at the half-decade of truth, learn the hosts’ all-time favorite guests (from Bob Woodson and Dr. Ben Carson to Chloe Cole), and get some hilarious secrets from when the mics were off, including the infamous day that newly hired Mike accidentally drank the very last of Congressman Jim Jordan's personal apple cider. How do we faithfully raise children in a culture that constantly fragments their attention? In this episode of Base Camp Live, Davies Owens welcomes Suzanne Phillips of Beacon Parent for a thoughtful and deeply encouraging conversation about parenting in an age of distraction, anxiety, and cultural confusion. Rather than offering another parenting checklist, Suzanne shares a biblical framework for becoming the kind of parent your children can follow. Together, they explore what Suzanne calls the seven facets of a “Beacon Parent,” including the supremacy of Christ, expressed honor, intentional legacy, transformative wisdom, humble courage, secure identity, and personal responsibility. Along the way, they discuss: • Why everything starts at home • The difference between knowledge and wisdom • How technology is reshaping childhood • Why honor is disappearing from families • The dangers of fear-based parenting • Why children need gradual responsibility • How parents can lead with clarity instead of anxiety This conversation is both practical and hopeful for parents seeking to raise grounded, thoughtful, Christ-centered children in a rapidly changing world. Today on ND Couples Coaches' Corner, Dr. Stephanie and Barbara Grant continue the series on the month-long series examining how Scripture is sometimes misused by spiritual authorities—such as clergy, small-group leaders, biblical counselors, and Christian counselors—in ways that shame or further harm those who are already experiencing abuse in their marriages. In this special series, Twisted Scripture: When the Bible Is Weaponized, we take a careful and thoughtful look at passages that are frequently used in ways that silence the vulnerable or pressure victims to remain in harmful situations. Today's Guest: Author of Life-Saving Divorce, Gretchen BaskervilleSome of today's verses included Malachi 2:16 and passages in Mark 10 and Matthew 19 about divorce. Short bioGretchen Baskerville is a Christian divorce recovery leader and author. She began leading support groups for single mothers in conservative churches in the Los Angeles area in 1998 and now focuses primarily on reaching people online. For more than 25 years, Gretchen has helped women and men of faith find strength, courage, and healing through the challenges of life-saving divorce. She listens with empathy to those recovering from domestic violence, betrayal, infidelity, addiction, and emotional abuse. A survivor of a toxic marriage herself, Gretchen understands the journey of rebuilding after loss. Following her own life-saving divorce and years as a single mother, she is now happily remarried. She is a graduate of Wheaton College with a degree in Bible and Christian Education. Definition:What's a Life-Saving Divorce?A Life-Saving Divorce is the opposite of an “I'm bored” divorce, or an “I miss the party life” divorce. It is a divorce for serious reasons: to find relief from a pattern of sexual immorality, physical violence, chronic emotional abuse, felony behavior, family-crushing addictions, or abandonment through neglect and indifference. Friendship does not happen automatically anymore. In a world filled with distraction, busyness, and surface-level interaction, many adults and students are struggling to form meaningful relationships. In this episode of BaseCamp Live, Davies Owens sits down with Dirk Bellamy to discuss the growing loneliness crisis and why friendship is becoming one of the greatest challenges of modern life. Drawing from his own experience of realizing he had virtually no close friendships, Dirk shares the practical and deeply personal journey that led him to write his book, Why We Ask. Together, they explore: Why proximity is not the same as connection The difference between acquaintances, friends, and close friendships How asking better questions transforms relationships Why intentionality matters in building community How parents can help children develop friendship skills The connection between friendship, meaning, and authentic belonging Why curiosity and humility are essential for healthy relationships This conversation offers practical encouragement for parents, educators, and anyone longing for deeper connection in an increasingly disconnected culture.

How do we move students from simply talking about truth, goodness, and beauty to actually living those ideals out in everyday life? In this episode of BaseCamp Live, Davies Owens is joined by Sharon Carlson for a thoughtful conversation about what it means to develop an “operational theology” , a faith that shapes not just beliefs, but daily decisions, relationships, failures, and future plans. Sharon draws from decades of experience in classical Christian education, student formation, counseling, and college advising to explore how schools and parents can help students connect theology to real life. Together, they discuss: Why students often struggle to apply Christian truth in practical decisions What “the good life” actually means from a biblical perspective How parents and schools can respond redemptively when students fail Why discipline moments can become discipleship opportunities The difference between knowing Christian virtues and becoming more like Christ How theology helps students navigate anxiety, uncertainty, and major life decisions Why “the best next step” matters more than fear of making the “wrong” decision Sharon also shares insights from mentoring students through college and career decisions, helping them understand that God's will is ultimately about being conformed to the character of Christ, not simply finding the perfect school, job, or path.

Host Andrew Camp welcomes Matt Erickson, senior pastor of Eastbrook Church in Milwaukee and author of The Pastor as Gardener, to discuss gardening as a metaphor for pastoral ministry and discipleship. Erickson shares his family roots in gardening, favorite crops, and how crises—including the pandemic, racial justice tensions, and a friend's moral failure—led him to agrarian biblical imagery such as 1 Corinthians 3:5. He describes how themes like seed, compost, pruning, soil, and seasons reshape views of suffering, formation, place, and community, critiquing technological distraction, rootlessness, and efficiency-driven “exploiter” mindsets in favor of care and attentiveness. Practical steps include contemplative prayer and guarding attention. They explore how churches face seasons, including “winter” in North American decline, and why resurrection-shaped hope sustains faithful cultivation. BioMatt Erickson is a pastor, writer, speaker, and disciple of Jesus. Since 2010, Matt has served as the Senior Pastor at Eastbrook Church, an urban, multiracial church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Matt received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Christian Education from Wheaton College (IL), a Master of Divinity degree from Northern Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Western Theological Seminary (Holland, MI) in connection with the Eugene Peterson Center for Christian Imagination. Elizabeth Woodson Kay Daigle As Christians in a world that doesn't follow Christ, it's essential not to let the culture around us form us. God desires his children to become more and more like Jesus. Too often, however, we fail to be aware of the voices around us that are forming us instead. Elizabeth Woodson shares from her latest book, calling us to resist the culture's formation rather than the Spirit's. Elizabeth not only helps us recognize common ways we are being formed by culture, she also provides the antidote. She suggests specific spiritual practices to implement. Don't miss this important conversation. I'm Kay Daigle of Beyond Ordinary Women Ministries. Welcome to our podcast today. I'm very excited to welcome Elizabeth Woodson, who has been with us before. Welcome, Elizabeth. We're so glad that you're here. Elizabeth >> Thanks for having me, Kay. It's great to be here. Kay >> Oh, you're welcome. Elizabeth is a Bible teacher, an author and a speaker. She has a degree from Dallas Seminary in Christian Education. And she has a new book out, and we're going to be talking about it today. The name of the book is Habits of Resistance. And the subtitle is Seven Ways You're Being Formed by Culture and Gospel Practices to Help You Push Back. So right there, hopefully the title will just pull people in, Elizabeth, because I think it's a great title and it helps us understand what's in the book. So it's Habits of Resistance. What are you suggesting that we need to resist? Elizabeth >> That is definitely an interesting title. We wanted to be able to draw people in with something that would make them ask that question. And so what we are wanting people to resist, or what I hope for people to resist, is being formed by the culture. And so it's the idea that our discipleship is not neutral, right? So being disciples isn't just being disciples of Jesus. We are disciples of whoever we follow. And unfortunately, I think we're in a space where maybe some of us have drifted from the path of Jesus more than we like to admit. And the fruit of our lives reflect that we're being formed by the culture. And so the encouragement through the book is to be aware of that, but also to practice these spiritual disciplines that help us resist that formation current that the culture is trying to keep us in. Kay >> Well, I certainly see the need for that. What did you see in us in the church that motivated you to write this particular book? Elizabeth >> Yeah. I saw things pop up in the place where a good portion of us like to hang out, which is social media, the gathering spaces that we have online. And so it's probably no surprise to the people who are listening that sometimes the comments sections on social media can be a bit of a dumpster fire even between Christians as we are disagreeing about things that we have difference of opinion. But in doing so, we dishonor one another as image bearers. And also is maybe just the subtle habits of what we're purchasing! And so I think there are aspects of overconsumption that we're just being pushed things and maybe our houses are full of too many things. Mine too, Kay, the Amazon boxes are showing up at my door, but the question is what is motivating us to push that buy button? And are we stewards of what God has given us? And so there's a couple other things I could list,

Christian education rises or falls on one foundation: the fear of the Lord is not preparation for knowledge but the very substance of it, while pride offers a counterfeit system that hardens hearts and ends in ruin. In contrast, fearing God builds strong lives and generational faithfulness, and this wisdom is ultimately found in Christ, who became wisdom for us, transforming fools into true knowers by His grace.

What is education actually for? Is it mainly about helping students get into college and launch a career, or is it about forming the kind of person who can flourish in faith, wisdom, and vocation? In this episode of BaseCamp Live, Davies Owens is joined by Ali Ghaffari, Executive Director of the St. John Henry Newman Institute and founder of Divine Mercy Academy, for a rich conversation about leadership, renewal, and the true purpose of education. Ali shares his remarkable journey from a difficult childhood to flying F-18s in the Navy, teaching leadership at the Naval Academy, embracing the Catholic faith, and helping lead renewal in Catholic education. Along the way, he reflects on how mentors, failure, and God's providence shaped his life and calling. Together, Davies and Ali explore the growing renewal movement in Catholic schools, the leadership challenges many schools face, and why education must aim higher than test scores and college admissions. They discuss the need for schools to form students in wisdom, virtue, and vocation, while also encouraging parents to raise their expectations and stay actively engaged in their children's education.

Many parents today feel that education has been reduced to information transfer and job preparation. But what if education is meant to be much more than that? In this episode, Davies Owens is joined by Dr. Patrick Egan to explore the enduring insights of Charlotte Mason, a visionary educator who emphasized the formation of the whole person. Her approach focuses not only on knowledge, but on shaping habits, cultivating affections, and nurturing a deep love for truth, goodness, and beauty. Together, they unpack how Mason's philosophy complements classical Christian education and offers practical ways to bring learning to life in both classrooms and homes. From narration and habit training to the importance of student ownership and joyful discovery, this conversation highlights what it truly means to educate a child as a person.
Dr. Brad Johnson, president of College of the Ozarks, shares how the school's distinctive work college model shapes students academically, spiritually, and personally. Known by many as “Hard Work U,” the college requires every student to work as part of their education, helping them graduate debt free while building character, responsibility, and a biblical understanding of work. This conversation explores the dignity of work and how Christian higher education can form students for lives of leadership, citizenship, and faithful service.
Where do classical Christian schools find their teachers, and how are they trained? In this episode of BaseCamp Live, Davies Owens sits down with Dr. Rob Jackson to explore one of the biggest challenges facing classical education today, building a strong pipeline of teachers. As more schools launch and grow, many are realizing that traditional certification programs do not prepare teachers for the classical classroom. Instead, schools are looking for educators with a love of their subject, a commitment to wisdom, and a willingness to be formed through mentorship and experience. Dr. Jackson shares where schools are finding teachers today, including recent graduates, second-career professionals, homeschool parents, and experienced educators searching for a better model. The conversation also highlights the role of apprenticeship, mentorship, and ongoing training in helping teachers grow in both skill and confidence.
E. Ray Moore is founder and president of the Board of Exodus Mandate, a project of Frontline Ministries which focuses on prayer, revival and Christian Education. He is a retired Army Reserve Chaplain retiring as Lt. Colonel in 1999 and was awarded the Bronze Star for service in Gulf War I. He is author of the book, Let my Children Go. He has also co-authored with his wife, The Promise of Jonadab: Building a Christian Family Legacy in a Time of Cultural Decline. He is also one of the executive producers of the 2011 award-winning film, IndoctriNation: Public Schools and the Decline of Christianity in America and executive producer of Escaping Common Core: Setting Our Children Free. Scripture gives fathers the mandate to raise their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. This includes the education of children, with many parents choosing to home educate. The result is that home schooling is growing in significant fashion. Secular forces are noticing and push-back is taking place as school districts, and even state legislatures, are increasingly viewing parents in an adversarial way, wanting them out of the education process. Connecticut House Bill 5468 is one such example. It would require registration with the local school district, mandate curriculum aligned with state standards and maintaining detailed student portfolios documenting academic progress. Other related points discussed include: What happened to "Common Core"? Is it dead? How can the church get engaged with the effort to help home schooling? Should a Christian run for a public school board position or not? What are the four main reasons why people home school their children?

In this next episode in the BaseCamp Live series exploring classical Christian education, Davies Owens welcomes Dr. Michael Adkins for a thoughtful conversation about what classical Christian education really is and why that question matters so much for families, schools, and the future of society. Dr. Adkins brings both historical depth and practical insight as he explains that classical Christian education is not primarily about training students to do more, but about forming them to become a certain kind of person. In contrast to modern models that often focus on utility, credentials, and workforce preparation, this conversation highlights an older and richer vision of education, one centered on truth, goodness, beauty, wisdom, and virtue. As part of this ongoing series, the episode helps listeners see that classical Christian education is not a trendy alternative or niche experiment. It is part of a much larger tradition that has shaped the West for centuries. Davies and Dr. Adkins trace the historical shift from a largely biblical and classical model of education to the progressive philosophy that reshaped modern schooling, showing how those changes affected not only academics, but also the way students understand freedom, authority, responsibility, and the purpose of life itself. This episode is both a defense of classical Christian education and an invitation to better understand its roots, its goals, and its lasting relevance in a modern world that often feels confused and disordered.
