What if the secret to raising spiritually mature kids isn't found in the latest parenting book, but in letting Scripture do the heavy lifting? Robert interviews Josh Niemi, founder of Expository Parenting Ministries, about his unique approach to Christian parenting that mirrors expository preaching—teaching children the Bible verse by verse in systematic discipleship. Josh shares how to start with storybook Bibles for younger children before transitioning to verse-by-verse study, the importance of partnering with expositional churches, and how this method builds solid theological foundations without common evangelical misconceptions. He offers practical insights from teaching his own three children through the entire Old Testament and discusses children's surprising capacity for understanding deep theology. The conversation also covers his book "Greater Than Aaron," exploring how Christ fulfills the Old Testament priesthood.

Why has Pride Month become less about tolerance and more about forced celebration—and what can faithful churches do about it? In this episode of Refining Rhetoric, Dr. Rosaria Butterfield—former lesbian activist turned pastor's wife—explains how LGBTQ ideology became a cultural idol and why the evangelical church's "winsome" approach has failed. She offers biblical guidance for churches and parents on how to faithfully respond during Pride Month by boldly proclaiming gospel truth rather than negotiating with idols. Key Discussion Points: - How the gay rights movement evolved from privatization to mandatory celebration - Why LGBTQ ideology functions as an idol demanding worship and child sacrifice - The evangelical church's failed strategy of compromise over truth - Practical advice for parents of prodigals struggling with sexual sin - What churches should do during Pride Month instead of staying silent - Why Gen Z is hungry for bold truth over therapeutic excuses Resources: https://rosariabutterfield.com/ "The Lust of the Flesh: Thinking Biblically About Sexual Orientation" by Jared Moore "The Enemy Within" by Chris Lundgaard John Owen's works on indwelling sin "From Transgender to Transformed" by Laura Perry Smalts Decision Point (decisionpoint.org) This episode of Refining Rhetoric is sponsored by Copper Lodge Library 2025 New Releases Explore the exciting new 2025 additions to the Classical Conversations Bookstore! We're continuing our special series all about school options, and today we're diving into private Christian education. This is a conversation that I think will really help if you're trying to figure out what role faith can (and should) play in your child's school life. I'm joined by Katelyn Freitas, the middle school principal at my kids' school, and her insight is full of heart, wisdom, and practical encouragement. Here are four takeaways from our conversation:Faith-based learning shapes character. Discipleship is woven into every subject and classroom moment.Partnership with parents matters. Christian schools work best when parents are active, involved, and aligned in mission.Community changes everything. Relationships between students, families, and staff create a spiritual foundation that lasts.Every child is discipled uniquely. Christian schools aren't one-size-fits-all; they're about helping each child grow in Christ.Katelyn is a passionate leader in Christian education with years of experience in both teaching and administration. As a principal, she brings clarity, compassion, and a deep commitment to seeing students flourish academically and spiritually. She's also someone I personally trust with my own kids which made this conversation extra special.I hope this episode encourages you as you consider what's best for your family.(02:54) Current Role and Responsibilities in Christian Education(05:58) Understanding Private Christian Education(09:08) Benefits of Private Christian Schools(11:58) Challenges of Private Christian Education(15:05) Community and Family Dynamics in Private Schools(18:00) Identifying the Right Fit for Families(20:56) Curriculum and Faith Integration in Christian Schools(21:37) Integrating Faith and Education(27:31) Discipline vs. Discipleship in Schools(33:02) Navigating School Choices for FamiliesResources MentionedChapel Hill AcademyAssociation of Christian SchoolsNIV Application BibleChristian Parenting resourcesMarriage SimplifiedThe Christian Parenting Podcast is a part of the Christian Parenting Podcast Network. What do charging elephants and frustrated homeschool parents have in common? More than you might think. In this engaging episode of Everyday Educator, Classical Conversations founder Leigh Bortins shares her recent adventure taking a photography course in Botswana with her husband. What started as a vacation quickly became a masterclass in learning dynamics when Leigh realized she naturally learns classically—even when her instructor doesn't teach that way. Through five days of "butting heads" with her teacher while capturing stunning wildlife photos, Leigh discovered profound insights about perseverance, community learning, and why the perfect classroom setup still leads to conflict. This episode offers encouragement for homeschool parents who struggle with difficult learning days, showing that even adult learners face challenges and that giving up is often the default human response. Leigh also introduces the new MathMap Monomials program for Challenge B students. Key Discussion Points: • Why even "perfect" learning conditions still involve struggle and conflict • How community support prevents students from giving up • Why it's the student's responsibility to learn, not the teacher's to educate • The importance of tailoring instruction to different learning styles • How cross-training and "breaking things" are essential parts of learning • Why parents often become the biggest obstacles to their children's learning This episode of Everyday Educator is sponsored by The Math Map: Monomials The Math Map Monomials helps families practice introductory algebraic computation together using classical skills that prepare students for the mathematical conversation of the ages. What makes education distinctly Christian? Is this more a question of what it is or what it isn't? But whatever we make of those questions, how do educators remain passionate about their mundane, sometimes thankless, often discouraging role in carrying this work forward? Anthony Hurst, who has over 25 years of experience in Christian Day Schools and currently works as school representative for Christian Light, offers valuable insight on these perennial questions. School leaders, you've likely experienced just how quickly your own vision and motivation can fade. You are also in a prime position to renew the passion of the teams that you lead. Join Anthony in reflecting on what keeps the fire burning. As you listen to his ideas and insights, take note of memories and experiences this brings to mind. How could you and your team tap into the experiences of the past year to renew your commitment for the next one? What if the same skills that solve decades-old murders could prove the reliability of the Gospels? Cold case detective J. Warner Wallace was a committed atheist who thought Christianity was fiction—until he applied his investigative training to the New Testament. What he discovered changed everything. J. Warner Wallace, a featured cold case detective from NBC Dateline and author of the bestselling "Cold Case Christianity," shares his remarkable journey from committed atheist to Christian apologist. Wallace explains why evidential faith is like wearing a bulletproof vest in a gunfight—especially crucial for raising kids in today's increasingly hostile culture. Key Themes: • How detective skills reveal biblical truth through forensic statement analysis • Why our culture shifted from positive to negative toward Christianity • The difference between "belief that" and "belief in" • Why parental passion about faith is more contagious than any program This conversation will challenge how you think about faith, evidence, and raising the next generation of believers in an increasingly skeptical world. Can your kids spot a red herring in a political debate? In this engaging episode, hosts Lisa and Delise chat with Kathy Gibbens, creator of the "Filter It Through a Brain Cell" podcast, about teaching critical thinking to the next generation. Kathy shares how watching her daughter's Challenge A class master logical fallacies during the chaos of 2020 inspired her podcast—while their peers got caught in emotional roller coasters, these students remained remarkably calm and clear-headed because they simply couldn't be fooled by bad thinking. The conversation explores cognitive biases, those mental shortcuts that can limit our ability to see truth clearly, and discusses how acknowledging our biases leads to more humble, curious conversations. With practical insights on responding to disagreement with curiosity rather than defensiveness and navigating AI's role in education, this episode equips parents to raise children who don't just know truth—but love it enough to seek it wisely. How do a Pastor and DCE work together as a ministry team in a congregation? The Rev. Dr. Phil Booe (Pastor, St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne, MN) and DCE Jessica Blocker (Director of Christian Education, St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne, MN) join Andy and Sarah for our Set Apart to Serve series to talk about how their education and formation as church workers prepared (or didn't prepare) them for team ministry, what they've learned about working as a team since they began serving together five years ago, how they handle logistics while working on a small team, how they make the best use of each other's strengths and interests, and what matters to them in how they present themselves as a team to the congregation and others. Learn more about St. John Lutheran Church at stjohnluverne.org. Christ's church will continue until He returns, and that church will continue to need church workers. Set Apart to Serve (SAS) is an initiative of the LCMS to recruit church workers. Together, we pray for workers for the Kingdom of God and encourage children to consider church work vocations. Here are three easy ways you can participate in SAS: 1. Pray with your children for God to provide church workers. 2. Talk to your children about becoming church workers. 3. Thank God for the people who work in your congregation. To learn more about Set Apart to Serve, visit lcms.org/set-apart-to-serve. Have a topic you'd like to hear about on The Coffee Hour? Well nerds, buckle up for this one. My buddy Ryan Burge has returned with his latest graphs about religion and the 2024 election, and let me tell you - it was zesty. We started talking about minor league baseball, chicken raising, and somehow ended up dissecting why 83% of white evangelicals voted for Trump (spoiler: it's not shocking). Ryan breaks down the real story of the 2024 election - how non-white evangelicals are now 50/50, why mainline Protestants aren't actually that liberal, and the fascinating shifts happening in the Catholic vote. We dive into the data that shows education and church attendance create some pretty stark political divides, and why Democrats might want to rethink their approach to people of faith. But this is us, so we also talked about LeBron's hair transplants, whether 100 men could take down a silverback gorilla, why online gambling is destroying America, and Ryan's ongoing campaign to get academics to eat at steakhouses instead of Sweet Green. Plus, Ryan explains why Mark Driscoll might be the godfather of the manosphere, and we debate whether Joe Scarborough and Mika have the worst work schedule in television. Oh, and we somehow got into a deep discussion about Mayor Pete's beard and why Democrats need to learn how to talk about their faith without sounding like they're apologizing for it. Because apparently that's where our brains go. Want the full conversation? This is just a taste of what we covered in over two hours of completely unhinged discussion. If you're a member of either Graphs About Religion (Ryan's substack) or Process This (mine), you get access to the entire unedited conversation, plus invitations to join us live for future streams where things get even more zesty - and yes, I'm using that word in the Whitehead sense, not the Gen Z sense. In this episode of Christ the Center, Camden Bucey welcomes Dr. J. Brandon Burks, pastor of Christ Reformed Church (URCNA) in Florence, Kentucky, to discuss his recent article published in The Confessional Presbyterian Journal (Vol. 20, 2024): The Puritans and the Salem Witch Trials: Living According to God's Revealed Will. Together, they explore the theological context of the infamous Salem witch trials of 1692, uncovering how speculative theology and reliance on so-called “spectral evidence” reflected a deeper deviation from Scripture's clarity and sufficiency. Dr. Burks outlines the influence of figures such as William Perkins, Cotton Mather, and Richard Baxter, while also shedding light on how the distinction between God's secret and revealed will was tragically misunderstood. The conversation goes beyond history, offering timely insights into contemporary fascination with mysticism, the spiritual dangers of neglecting the ordinary means of grace, and the need for biblically grounded theology in facing spiritual warfare today. They conclude by considering the value of a redemptive-historical and confessional framework in pastoral ministry and theological education.
