In 2006 the Innocent 3 were wrongly convicted in Coweta County Georgia. Benjamin Hargett, Angelo Armstrong, and Michael Cox were given death sentences for a crime they have never committed. In fact, the crux of the state's case is based on hearsay statements. The state of Georgia could not produce any type of evidence to corroborate with these statements that convicted the Innocent 3. Women lifers across the United States and specifically here in the state of New Jersey are serving life without parole sentences for taking the life of their abusers in the act of self defense. Victims should not die in prison for wanting to live. I hope by using my platform and voice to air the survivors of domestic violence stories and having their voices heard; can affect change in how victims of abuse are treated in the criminal justice system. Prayerfully we can help put an end to the practice of criminalizing self-defense for battered women, and put an end to making survival a crime.
Waif was convicted in 1994 for a 1990 murder he did not commit. Walif was convicted solely on the testimony of one witness. In this episode I highlight the injustice Joseph Amrin has received from the state of missouri. Joe Amrin spent 17 years on death row in the state of missouri for a murder he did not commit. The supreme court overturned his conviction in 2003. Since 2003 Joe has had trouble integrating into society, finding a job, and developing relationships. The state of missouri has not compensated Joe for the 17 years he spent behind bars. Instead they granted a $14 check that was left over from his commissary.
It is a unfortunate fact that many people face so many challenges after incarceration. From getting healthcare, finding a job, and even reconnecting with family.
It is a unwritten rule that African Americans vote Democrat. For decades Democrats have been talking about criminal justice reform. The only thing Democrats have been reforming is the growth and explosion of prison numbers that led to mass incarceration here in New Jersey. African Americans and Hispanics have been heavily impacted by these draconian laws that are in place in New Jersey. Mass incarceration effects black and brown people at a large rate. We need to be smart on crime not tough on crime. Let's take preventive measures!
