The Fight Against AI-Powered Surveillance with EFF's Cindy Cohn and Adam Savage

When the Pentagon formally designated Anthropic a “supply chain risk” this March, the dispute put a spotlight on civil liberties concerns in the AI-era. Anthropic had reportedly hit an impasse with the Trump administration over the company's push for guardrails banning the use of its Claude model to conduct mass surveillance. Anthropic's CEO had called such surveillance a “red line” it would not cross. But where exactly should those lines be drawn, and who should draw them? Few people have spent more time thinking about those issues than Cindy Cohn, executive director of the San Francisco-based civil liberties group Electronic Frontier Foundation. Throughout her career, EFF's executive director has been driven by a fundamental question: Can we still have private conversations if we live our lives online? Her new book, Privacy's Defender: My Thirty-Year Fight Against Digital Surveillance, chronicles her battles to protect our right to digital privacy. Cohn weaves her own personal story with the history of the Crypto Wars, FBI gag orders, and the post-9/11 surveillance state. She describes how she became a seasoned leader in the early digital rights movement, as well as how this work serendipitously helped her discover her birth parents and find her life partner. Along the way, she also details the development of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which she grew from a ragtag group of lawyers and hackers into “one of the most powerful digital rights organizations in the world.” Cohn will be joined by Adam Savage, former co-host of the Discovery Channel show “Mythbusters,” to talk about the issues raised in her book, EFF's work, and the emerging battle over AI surveillance. Send me a DM here (it doesn't let me respond), OR email me: imagineabetterworld2020@gmail.com"Conspiracy of Silence" is a powerful, disturbing documentary revealing a nationwide child abuse and pedophilia ring that leads to the highest levels of government. Featuring intrepid investigator John DeCamp, a highly decorated Vietnam war veteran and 16-year Nebraska state senator, "Conspiracy of Silence" reveals how rogue elements at all levels of government have been involved in systematic child abuse and pedophilia to feed the base desires of key politicians.... Check this out! Satanic Ritual Abuse:http://mysticalmusingsandpolitics.blogspot.com/2011/12/satanic-ritual-abuse.htmlBased on DeCamp's riveting book, The Franklin Cover-up, "Conspiracy of Silence" begins with the shut-down of Nebraska's Franklin Community Federal Credit Union after a raid by federal agencies in November 1988 revealed that $40 million was missing. When the Nebraska legislature launched a probe into the affair, what initially looked like a financial swindle soon exploded into a startling tale of drugs, money laundering, and a nationwide child abuse ring. Nineteen months later, the legislative committee's chief investigator died suddenly and violently, like more than a dozen other people linked to the Franklin case. So why have you never heard of the Franklin cover-up? Originally scheduled to air in May (3rd) of 1994 on the Discovery Channel, "Conspiracy of Silence" was yanked at the last minute due to formidable pressure applied by top politicians. Some very powerful people did not want you to watch this documentary. You may find yourself becoming angry or upset while watching "Conspiracy of Silence." Many people do. However, consider that each of us has at times in our life acted out of selfish motives when it comes to sexuality and ended up hurting others in one way or another. Let us take this information not only as a call to stop this kind of abuse at the nationwide level, but also as a call to examine our own sexual relationships and make a commitment to deep honesty and integrity in our own lives around this most sensitive issue. Thanks for caring and may we all work together to build a brighter future for ourselves and for our world. A copy of this videotape was furnished anonymously to former Nebraska state senator and attorney John De Camp who made it available to retired FBI Agent Ted L. Gunderson. While the video quality is not top grade, this tape is a blockbuster in what is revealed by the participants involved.NOTE: This film had to be reassembled from remaining VHS fragments after an all-out effort was made to block the film's release and destroy all extant copies. Every effort has been made to restore it to the original and complete 'meant to be broadcast' version.CONNECT WITH EMMA:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@imaginationpodcastofficialRumble: https://rumble.com/c/TheImaginationPodcastEMAIL: imagineabetterworld2020@gmail.com OR standbysurvivors@protonmail.comMy Substack: https://emmakatherine.substack.com/BUY ME A COFFEE: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/theimaginationVENMO: @emmapreneurCASHAPP: $EmmaKatherine1204All links: https://direct.me/theimaginationpodcastSupport the show

Blending filmmaking and fiction: Neil Laird is a veteran documentary filmmaker and television executive who rediscovered a new creative spark in midlife through writing fiction. In this episode Neil shares his journey from a small steel town in Pennsylvania to directing documentaries for the Discovery Channel and National Geographic, and eventually finding the courage to self-publish his own novels at the age of 50.Inspired by the fearless reinvention of David Bowie, Neil discusses the transition from the 'tedious' corporate side of television back to the joy of making things up. He delves into his Prime Time Travelers series of novels, which blends his deep knowledge of ancient history with satirical takes on the chaos of TV production, and offers inspiring advice for adults looking to reignite their own passions: stop waiting for the stars to align, don't be afraid of the first 'rubbish' draft, and surround yourself with cheerleaders rather than naysayers.Finding Inspiration in the Unexpected: Neil recounts how a period of unemployment led him to the New York Public Library, where a chance encounter with a book on ancient history completely shifted his creative trajectory and led to his first documentary on the Great Sphinx. The Midlife Creative Shift: Turning 50 served as a catalyst for Neil to explore fiction. Inspired by the fearless innovation of David Bowie, he decided to move beyond the constraints of documentary filmmaking to imagine historical worlds with a fresh coat of paint.Blending Expertise with Satire: After struggling to find an agent for a traditional historical novel, Neil found his unique voice by blending his professional background with fiction in his Prime Time Travelers series – a satirical look at a film crew messing up history. The Power of Creative Independence: Neil discusses his decision to self-publish, allowing him to maintain creative control over his characters and storylines, including diverse and LGBTQ+ representation that might have been lost in traditional publishing.Advice for Aspiring Creatives: Neil emphasises the importance of starting now, surrounding yourself with cheerleaders rather than naysayers, and not being afraid of the inevitable first draft being a load of rubbish.I would love some financial support to help me to keep making this podcast. Rather than answers, this celebrates curiosity and openness. It affirms that becoming isn't about arriving, it's about staying awake to possibility. Core question: What does "more" mean to you now, and how will you make room for it? Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with Stefoni Rossiter, retired educator, caregiver, and creative spirit. She shares how this season of transition has opened the door to deeper self-trust, creativity, and a more compassionate way of becoming. In today's episode, we discuss: Pay attention to what has always drawn you in. The things we were naturally curious about early in life often still point toward what matters most to us now. Looking back can help you notice patterns you may have overlooked and reconnect with parts of yourself that are still waiting to be used. Creativity does not have an expiration date. Whether it is sketching, journaling, cooking, gardening, writing, or building something with your hands, trying something new can open up a different kind of confidence. You do not need to be an expert to benefit from creativity. Your role can change without your value changing. A transition like retirement, caregiving, or a career shift can leave you wondering who you are without your old responsibilities. Identity can expand, and a new season does not erase the impact of the one before it. Self-care can be practical and personal. It does not have to look fancy to matter. For Stefoni, routines, movement, reading, gardening, and creative time all help her stay grounded, and that is a good reminder that self-care works best when it actually fits your life. You do not have to do it perfectly to do it well. Stefoni's willingness to try, fail, adjust, and keep going is part of what makes her story so relatable. That same mindset can help anyone loosen their grip on perfection and make room for growth.   RESOURCES: Guest Bio: Stefoni Rossiter is a veteran theater arts performer, director, and choreographer with over 50 years of experience.   Retiring from full-time teaching in 2024, she now teaches middle school theater arts part-time at a local charter school.   Awards: Parent of the Year, Autism Society Ventura, California, Mayor's Award for Arts Educator of the Year 6 Teachers of the semester awards Teacher of the year Inducted into the Hall of Fame  Since retirement, Stefoni has learned to fill her days with self-care, which includes incorporating daily creativity. What if the story of bipolar disorder was told not just through textbooks—but through real people, real lives, and real hope? In this deeply moving and insightful episode, Shaley sits down with author Sarah Schley and filmmaker Bonnie Weltch to talk about Brainstorm, a powerful new documentary that brings together lived experience and cutting-edge science to reshape how we understand bipolar disorder. Sarah shares her personal journey—what it was like to live for 25 years without the correct diagnosis of bipolar II, the toll that took, and what finally changed. She opens up about turning decades of pain, confusion, and stigma into her memoir, and ultimately into a film designed to reach people all over the world. Bonnie takes us behind the scenes of creating a documentary from the ground up—what it takes to commit years to one story, how they found and chose the individuals featured in the film, and why it was so important to weave together both human stories and scientific research. The result is a film that doesn't just inform—it connects, validates, and inspires. Together, they explore the realities of bipolar II, including why it's so often misunderstood or misdiagnosed, and why it is not a “lesser” form of bipolar disorder. They also dive into fascinating, evidence-based science featured in the film—from genetics and brain function to circadian rhythms—and how this research can actually translate into practical, everyday strategies for staying well. This conversation also highlights something many people living with bipolar struggle with: the ongoing nature of the illness. Even when things look “together” on the outside, there is often continuous effort behind the scenes—protecting sleep, maintaining routines, advocating for needs, and staying aware of early warning signs. Sarah and Shaley speak candidly about what it really takes to live well, and why self-advocacy is not selfish—it's essential. Most importantly, this episode is filled with hope. Through storytelling, community, and science, it reminds us that while bipolar disorder is complex and lifelong, it is also manageable—and a full, meaningful life is possible. Whether you live with bipolar, love someone who does, or simply want to better understand it, this episode will leave you feeling more informed, more connected, and less alone. Dr. John Whyte has spent his career at the intersection of medicine, media and public policy. Now, as CEO of the American Medical Association, he hears firsthand what physicians, patients and health leaders are most concerned about and what they expect from the future of healthcare. That perspective makes him an ideal guest for Season 11 of Fixing Healthcare with cohosts Dr. Robert Pearl and Jeremy Corr. This season's guests bring more than impressive résumés and large social-media followings. They bring insight into what people across the country are actually talking about: the fears they express, the questions they ask and the expectations they carry into exam rooms, boardrooms and online conversations. Whyte has held leadership roles at the FDA and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. He later became chief medical officer at WebMD and chief medical expert for Discovery Channel. In each position, he has focused on translating complex medical issues into clear, actionable information. In this conversation, he shares what he is hearing now and why the answers will require both cultural and structural change. Key highlights include: Three concerns dominate for physicians. Whyte opens by identifying what he hears most often across the country: frustration with prior authorization and payment incentives in Medicare and Medicaid, anxiety about scope-of-practice changes, and uncertainty about how physicians should lead (rather than react to) the rapid rise of digital health and generative AI. Medicaid disruption and impact on children. Whyte explains that policy changes at both federal and state levels could leave vulnerable populations without coverage or access to care. He emphasizes that nearly half of U.S. children rely on Medicaid. Payment models and physician autonomy. The discussion explores tensions between fee-for-service, Medicare Advantage and value-based approaches. Whyte argues that physicians must retain meaningful choice in how they practice and get paid, even as consolidation and employment models reduce autonomy. Generative AI as “augmented intelligence.” Whyte notes that more than 80% of physicians now use AI tools professionally, largely for documentation and communication tasks. The real opportunity, he says, lies in improving diagnosis, personalization and continuous monitoring. Home as the future site of care. From wearables to smart diagnostic devices, Whyte envisions a shift away from episodic office visits toward continuous monitoring and preventive care. Outcome-based reimbursement. Pearl asks whether paying for outcomes could unlock broader adoption of AI-enabled tools. Whyte acknowledges the promise but highlights practical challenges, including patient complexity, burnout and the risk that efficiency gains could simply lead to higher patient volumes. The evolving physician-patient relationship in the AI era. With a growing share of patients using generative AI before appointments, Whyte encourages clinicians to view digitally informed patients as partners. Open dialogue, trusted sources and shared decision-making, he argues, will define effective care in the years ahead. There's so much more to this episode. Tune in to find out what physicians and patients should expect from the future of medicine. * * * Fixing Healthcare is a co-production of Dr. Robert Pearl and Jeremy Corr. Subscribe to the show via Apple, Spotify, Stitcher or wherever you find podcasts. In this episode I'm talking to Carol Bowman about her research into children with past life memories. What if you could see a loved one who has died, not in a future spiritual realm, but here and now, in this lifetime? It is possible, says Carol Bowman, author of Children's Past Lives and a pioneer in reincarnation studies. Based on in-depth research and direct observation of very young children, she shows in this groundbreaking book how common it is for beloved relatives to reincarnate into the same family. Typical families share how their children -- some as young as two and still in diapers -- speak spontaneously of intimate details from the lives of a family member they never knew. These true stories shed new light on age-old questions of family relationships: Do we choose our parents? What relationships survive death? What happens to the soul after a miscarriage or abortion? Bowman offers hope for anyone who has lost a beloved relative and longs to be reunited again. Bio Carol Bowman, M.S. is an internationally known author, lecturer, counselor, past life regression therapist, and pioneer in reincarnation studies.  Her books, Children's Past Lives (Bantam, 1997) and Return from Heaven (HarperCollins, 2001) are now classics in the reincarnation field, and have been published and read around the world in 22 foreign editions. Carol has been a practicing past life regression therapist for adults for more than 35 years.  She is a graduate of Simmons College in Boston.  She studied with the pioneers in the field of past life regression, and holds an M.S. in Counseling from Villanova University. Carol has been a leading spokesperson for children's past lives since the publication of her first book in 1997.  She is often invited to be a guest on TV and radio, and has appeared as a reincarnation expert on Oprah, Good Morning America, The Katie Show, Unsolved Mysteries, A&E, Discovery Channel, ABC Primetime, the BBC in England,  on The Art Bell Show, and on Coast to Coast with George Noory.  She has lectured in Brazil, Norway, Belgium, Ireland, Spain, Canada, the Netherlands, and at the Omega Institute and the Edgar Cayce Foundation. Children's Past Lives is the first non-academic book to explore the phenomenon of children's spontaneous past life memories.  It tells Carol's story of how her own children's past life memories led her to do research.  It also includes a guidebook for parents, to teach them how to recognize and respond when their children have these memories.  Her research presents reincarnation as a practical reality in our lives and within our families. Return from Heaven expands the research to cases of reincarnation within the same family. Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with Stephanie Baker, Chief Experience Officer and artist. She highlights her journey of moving beyond achievement, sharing how embracing vulnerability, creativity, and leading with empathy has redefined what true success means, for herself, her teams, and those she mentors. In today's episode, we discuss: Reimagine your definition of success. Step back from titles and checkboxes. Ask yourself whether your work aligns with your core values and your true impact. When your work is a reflection of who you are, fulfillment finds you, not the other way around. Lead with empathy and inclusion. Performance isn't just about KPIs; it's about how people feel in your presence. When you foster empathy, inclusion, and psychological safety, you build teams that are resilient, innovative, and engaged at every level. Make becoming a lifelong pursuit. You don't have to have it all figured out. The most effective, impactful leaders are those who stay open to growth and keep redefining who they are—at work and in life. Protect your energy unapologetically. Learn to say "no"—and realize that it's a complete sentence. Being deliberate with your time and focus allows you to say "yes" to what truly matters and show up at your best. Give yourself permission to explore new interests. Try picking up something new—painting, mentoring, creating. You never know which hidden strengths or sources of joy are waiting for you. (Check out her paintings in the show notes. She is GIFTED!)   RESOURCES: Guest Bio: Stephanie Baker is a Senior operations executive with 20+ years of experience driving enterprise performance and operational excellence. Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with Elizabeth Haggerty,  EVP Customer Solutions, America's Division, CRH. She highlights how navigating life's and career pivots, unexpected business challenges, and a life-changing health diagnosis led her to discover untapped reserves of courage and resilience, offering real-life strategies to thrive through uncertainty and continual growth. In today's episode, we discuss: Adopt the "one foot in, one foot out" approach. When considering a new role or industry, bring core skills you already have while stretching into new territory, so you're growing without completely untethering yourself. Let your setbacks refine, not define, you. When a business is sold, or a role ends abruptly, even through being fired, treat it as a painful but powerful pivot point, not a verdict on your worth or future potential. Integrate joy and self-care into your life. Make space for passions, hobbies, and relationships outside of work. These experiences not only enhance your overall well-being but also give you energy and perspective to face professional challenges with renewed spirit. Redefine your identity beyond job titles. Reflect on how external achievements and positions have shaped your sense of self. Shift your focus from titles to your skill sets, values, and unique contributions. This empowers you to navigate transitions and derive fulfillment from multiple aspects of life. Release the need to do everything alone. Accept that asking for help is a sign of wisdom, not weakness. Rely on your team's expertise and focus on asking insightful questions. This collaborative approach strengthens outcomes and develops your leadership. Guest Bio: Elizabeth Haggerty is a high-impact executive with over a 35-year history of driving growth and profitability in the building products industry.   Starting in the HVAC industry leading global product and channel P&Ls before transitioning to the industrial material products space where she has led large P&L businesses and key customer growth strategies.   Liz has experience in green fielding businesses as well as leading turn arounds and corporate carve-outs.   All of this done through building and developing high performing teams and investing in leadership development.  She has a bachelor's and master's degree in metallurgical engineering and an MBA.  Elizabeth has been recognized by:  Glass Magazine as one of the industry's Most Influential People,  Engineered Systems Magazine as 20 Women to Watch  HVAC and by Industry Week for women in manufacturing.   She was also recognized by the Manufacturing Institute a Women in Manufacturing Step Ahead Honoree in 2021. In this episode, Guy talked with Dr. Mario Martinez, explaining it inspired him to test biological vs chronological age and offering a partner discount for DNA-related tests. Dr. Martinez discussed longevity myths, arguing centenarians—not gerontologists—are the key evidence, and that genetics account for about 20%. He described "inflammaging," noting centenarians show compensatory immune responses and research suggesting some inflammatory processes become anti-inflammatory; in a study of 50 centenarians, average biological age tested about 25 years younger. He critiques biohacking and excessive supplements, emphasizing lifestyle, perception, and emotions. Martinez outlined eight factors—four perceptions (time, aging, health, self-valuation) and four emotions (generosity, gratitude, admiration, curiosity)—and introduced the Centenarian Consciousness Index (CCI) plus GlycanAge finger-prick testing to track biological age over time. They covered curiosity as an antidote to default-mode self-sabotage, cultural "portals" that enforce aging, moderation, connection, self-care, and language cues like saying "thank you" instead of "no problem." About Dr. Mario: Dr Mario Martinez is a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in how cultural beliefs affect the interaction of productivity, health and longevity. He is the founder of Biocognitive Science and the Empowerment Code. He developed an organizational model that views productivity and wellness as inseparable components of sustainable profits. The Empowerment Code is the first organizational training program that brings combined principles of cultural psychoneuroimmunology, cultural neuroscience and cultural anthropology to the workplace.  Based on parameters that allow the immune system to make several hundred thousand decisions per minute, the Empowerment Code offers an organizational language that maximizes creativity, initiative and productivity, while diminishing conditions that contribute to chronic illnesses. Martinez holds a Masters degree in clinical psychology from Vanderbilt University and a Doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Madrid.  He also has post-doctoral training in psychopharmacology from Farleigh Dickinson University. Because of his work in how cultural beliefs affect the immune system, Martinez has investigated alleged cases of stigmata for the Catholic Church, the BBC, National Geographic and Discovery Channel. He lectures worldwide on his theory of Biocognition and teaches Empowerment Code principles to top US corporate executives and to global organizations in Europe, South America, Africa, and Asia Pacific. Skeptics said synagogues didn't exist in Galilee during Jesus' lifetime. They were wrong. They said crucified victims were never buried. They were wrong. Wrong again.Dr. Craig Evans, one of the world's leading scholars on the historical Jesus and New Testament archaeology, has spent decades connecting physical discoveries to the Gospel narratives. He's authored over 70 books, founded the Dead Sea Scrolls Institute, lectured at Cambridge, Oxford, and Yale, and appeared on BBC, the History Channel, Discovery Channel, and National Geographic. In this episode, he walks us through the discoveries that secular Israeli archaeologists rely on the Gospels as their primary sources, why skeptical theories collapse under the weight of evidence, and how the skeletal remains of a crucified man confirm that Jesus would have been buried exactly as the Gospels describe. Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with  Melissa Muir, acclaimed jewelry artist and teacher. She highlights how embracing life's unexpected pivot points opens new paths for creativity, personal growth, and transformation. In today's episode, we discuss: Honor your pivot points. Notice the moments whernt feels like a dead end. What would be different if you chose to see it as a time to redesign? Use every closed door or "mistake" as information for your next step. Allow creativity to be learned. Release the belief that you're "not creative" and give yourself permission to practice, experiment, and grow your skills one imperfect attempt at a time. Come home to your own truth. Gently question inherited beliefs, rules, and expectations so you can build a true relationship with yourself, the divine, and others that feels loving, spacious, and genuinely your. Choose communities that help you flourish. Intentionally seek out people who are curious, creative, and kind, knowing that "creativity breeds creativity" and you don't have to do it alone. "If you say something over and over often and enough, it becomes true because perception is reality."  Paul O'Callaghan has built a career at the intersection of water science, wastewater realities, and the practical question every operator and executive eventually faces; what actually moves innovation from idea to adoption.  As Founder and CEO of BlueTech Research, Paul explains how his team helps decision-makers put capital to work more efficiently in water by reducing uncertainty and separating signal from noise. He describes patterns he's watched repeat across water entrepreneurs, pilots, and product market fit, and why "innovation" often breaks down simply because utilities, investors, and founders are using the same word to mean different things.    Capital, fit, and the language gap Paul unpacks what it takes to align an investor's expectations with a technology's true pathway to scale. He contrasts different "types" of innovation and why matching the right investor, entrepreneur, market, and timeline matters as much as the technology itself. The conversation also highlights why solving a problem someone has today is often a safer starting point than betting everything on a problem that might arrive tomorrow.  Regulations as a driver and a risk  Regulation matters in water and wastewater, but Paul cautions against building an entire business on the hope that rules will create a market on schedule. He walks through timing risk, enforcement uncertainty, and why tracking policy momentum matters as much as tracking the text of the regulation itself. He also notes a shift toward more "aspirational" regulation focused on reuse, regeneration, and systems-level outcomes.  Storytelling that changes adoption  From Brave Blue World to Our Blue World, Paul shares what he learned about making water personal and compelling without reducing it to doom-and-gloom narratives. The stories he tells connect to a core professional challenge: technologies enable outcomes, but adoption accelerates when people can see and want the "better" future those outcomes create.  Listen to the full conversation above. Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with you as I launch the new "Still Becoming" series. I highlight how the journey of growth and self-discovery continues long after success is achieved, inviting you to explore the moments of untapped courage, unexpected opportunities, and personal evolution that unfold beyond traditional milestones. In today's episode, we discuss: Explore life beyond achievement. Reflect on the moment when hitting goals and earning recognition stopped answering everything, and consider whether it's time to redesign what success looks like for you now. Listen for your quiet evolution. Notice the subtle inner shifts, new perspectives, expanded freedom, unexpected gentleness with yourself, that change how you see your work, your impact, and what's truly possible. Let the unexpected become a doorway. Revisit the chapters you never planned, a random elevator conversation, a surprise opportunity, a path you "stumbled into", that you now wouldn't give back for anything. Tap your untapped courage. Acknowledge the deeper reservoir of bravery it takes to step away from predictability, trust your inner knowing, and say yes when your path is no longer obvious or linear. Choose meaning over momentum. Ask where you're sprinting on autopilot and where you're ready to consciously trade speed for impact, alignment, and the kind of contribution that actually matters to you. Define what "more" means for you now. Let go of one-size-fits-all ambitions and get curious about your current version of "more" in this season—more joy, more presence, more service, more creativity—and honor that as valid and enough. Forged by Fire: Jesse James on Craftsmanship, Controversy, and ReinventionThis week, Marcus and Melanie sit down with Jesse James, one of the most influential custom motorcycle builders of the modern era. A fabricator at heart and an old-school craftsman by trade, Jesse is best known as the founder of West Coast Choppers, a brand that redefined the custom chopper world with raw metal, rigid frames, and uncompromising attention to detail.Jesse's journey began in his mother's garage, where he learned the art of fabrication under the mentorship of legendary hot rod builder Boyd Coddington. What started as a passion for building with his hands quickly evolved into a full-scale operation in Long Beach, California—one that would grow to employ more than 50 people and produce hand-built motorcycles commanding prices from $50,000 to $150,000.His rise to national fame came through the Discovery Channel's Motorcycle Mania, which gave viewers an unfiltered look into his shop, his process, and his relentless standards. That exposure led to Monster Garage, cementing Jesse as a household name and a defining figure in reality-based automotive television.Known for crafting—not assembling—his bikes, Jesse's signature style emphasizes stretched frames, precision metalwork, and function-driven design over flash. His work has been commissioned by high-profile clients including Kid Rock and Shaquille O'Neal, further solidifying his influence across culture, sports, and entertainment. In 2010, after facing both personal and business challenges, Jesse closed the original West Coast Choppers headquarters and relocated to Texas. There, he rebuilt—both personally and professionally—continuing to create custom machines and expanding into new ventures, including firearms manufacturing and direct-to-consumer media through platforms like OTLW.tv.In this episode, Jesse opens up about learning discipline and skill the hard way, building a brand from nothing, the cost of fame and fast success, and why craftsmanship, grit, and honesty still matterThis is a raw, no-nonsense conversation about earning your skills, owning your mistakes, and building something real—one weld at a time.In this episode you will hear:• I went to Iraq in '03, a month after we invaded. We did a USO tour and Kid Rock went and invited me. Nobody from USO knew who I was, so I told them I was, so I lied and said I was his tour manager. (1:13)• I ended up going t jail my senior year for stealing cars. (14:47)• I went to college and it was like crabs trying to get out of a barrel. (15:25)• I was always working in the garage, building bikes. I had a Harley in High school. I was restoring bicycles, and building Volkswagons and sending them to Japan. I was hustling. (16:11)• From my parents being antique dealers, I had a huge, pretty valuable tin toy collection. Like really rare Mark 10 toys worth thousands of dollars. I loaded ‘em up in my car and took ‘em to the big toy show in Pasadena. I sold them all to a dealer, and I used that money to buy a mill and a lathe and a welder for my garage. (23:27)• If you're gonna wait for the right time, that's never coming. (23:51)• My dad started me really young working. I literally despised him for it. And now I'm thankful because I have this relentless work ethic. (25:01)• I restored a 1940 or '41 bicycle called the Hiawatha Chippewa. I bought it for $100. (29:08)• The first thing I ever made was a dust pan. (32:33)• I was getting pai $750 a week salary, and at night I was making about 15 grand a week, making and shipping fenders. (43:56)• If you would watch the Discovery channel in '99 and 2000, they would run [my documentary on how a motorcycle gets built by hand] over and over. It was the highest rated show in the history of the network. (53:32)• I did 118 cars. (56:43)• I love taking about what I do. I love interaction. (60:11)• [Marcus] When you're driving into work early – with an hour difference – what type of cars are on the road early in the morning as opposed to the ones during rush hour. I heard that. (61:47)• Success in this country, and in the world, isn't defined by tactile skills. (62:40)• I'm eliminating everything in my life that keeps me from working and being a craftsman.
