El 1 de diciembre se celebra el Día Mundial de la Lucha contra el SIDA. Fue el primer día dedicado a la salud en todo el mundo, y la razón de elegir esa fecha concreta fue por razones de impacto mediático, al ser el primer día del mes de diciembre. En este día, se hacen muchos actos de concienciación; muchas personas salen a la calle con un lazo rojo, símbolo de la lucha contra el Síndrome de Inmunodeficiencia Humana (SIDA, por sus siglas en inglés); grupos de personas se movilizan para recaudar fondos para la investigación y para dar su apoyo y solidaridad a las personas con SIDA. Origen del Día Mundial del SIDA. BROWNSVILLE, Texas - Former state Sen. Eddie Lucioo, Jr., has not been able to give away as many turkeys to the less fortunate this year, in part because federal funding to the food banks has been cut.Normally, Lucio would purchase the turkeys at a competitive price from local food banks and distribute them to those in need in Cameron, Willacy, and Hidalgo counties. This year, however, the 25th year he has been doing it, he has had to pay for them from the large distributors at the normal price.And so, he has had to shrink the program to just giving away 400 turkeys and all within Cameron County alone. In an interview with Ron Whitlock Reports, Lucio explained how his Thanksgiving Turkey Day first started.“This is the 25th annual giveaway. We started off with with 10 or 20 turkeys and they mostly to the ladies that kind of hung around my campaign. Those that were really interested in community development. They were activists. And I told Brenda, my dear assistant who has actually worked for me for 36 years, to go out and buy some turkeys to give them.“And it started like that. But we continued to make it bigger and bigger until it got to hundreds of families that we were able to help.”Back then Lucio had campaign contributions to draw on to purchase the turkeys. But when he retired in 2023, the campaign contributions, naturally, dried up.“Back in the day I had money that was contributed to me, and I was glad to share it with the less fortunate that needed our help and support. But after January of 2023 I was no longer in public public service. But, fortunately, I still had some anonymous donors that that wanted to help, one in particular that I care not to mention. I said I would not divulge his name because he wanted to keep it private.”Lucio said he gave away one thousand turkeys last year. This year, he has had to shrink it to 400.“These big, multi-billion dollar corporations, they don't give you any discounts. They're there to make money. That's the name of the game for them. I don't want to be too critical but when it comes to helping the less fortunate and those that that need help, I think all of us should dig in a little bit and share a little bit of the wealth and share a little bit of our resources so that they, too, can have a sit down dinner with with their families, and enjoy the day and thank God for all the blessings.”Lucio said he is particularly disappointed he could give out turkeys in Willacy and Hidalgo counties, as in previous years.“I used to do the three counties because I had enough turkeys. Hidalgo, Willacy and Cameron. But this year, there are very few turkeys, 600 less. It means I couldn't cross the county line to Hidalgo and Willacy, and it hurts me. It pains my heart not to be able to help because of lack of funds and the lack of resources that we need.”Lucio says he has a plan to arrest the slide, to give away more turkeys next year.“I have a plan. I want to make sure we have the funds necessary. So I'm going to do a big (golf) tournament and call it a Turkey Tournament. Sometime in May or June of next year. In Kent Jones's Late Fame, adapted from an Arthur Schnitzler novella, a once-upon-a-time New York poet (and now a postal worker) is intoxicated by the sudden attentions of a coterie of twentysomething wannabe poets. In Kelly Reichardt's The Mastermind, set in the 1970s, an aimless art-school dropout executes a comically sloppy heist at a local museum, as if seeking escape from his banal, bourgeois family life. And in Lucio Castro's Drunken Noodles, an art student spends a summer in New York, having a series of serendipitous and erotic encounters around painting, poetry, and writing. Each film dwells in how both the making and consuming of art can force life into a pace incompatible with that of the modern world. No era una pelota tan buena como la de Lucio, pero servía para patear y hacer goles.Desde la ventana de la sala, después de más de un berrinche, Lucio escuchaba las risas de sus amigos. ¡El juego continuaba! Con una familia que alimentar y sacar adelante, don Lucio comenzó a buscar trabajo sin tener resultado. Cierto día, al verlo tan desesperado, su vecino le pidió que cortara la maleza de su terreno y le daría unas monedas. Así que don Lucio fue por el machete, su sombrero y camisa manga larga y comenzó a limpiar.Al terminar ese día, descubrió que una enorme ampolla amenazaba con explotar en su mano, pero era necesario terminar el trabajo. Volvió a la mañana siguiente y el dolor en su mano producido por la ampolla le hacía pensar que nunca más aceptaría un trabajo así. Mientras trabajaba, otro vecino pasó por el lugar y le ofreció una cantidad de dinero por limpiar su patio. Como estaba tan necesitado, aceptó el empleo. La ampolla que se había reventado dolió por un tiempo, pero al transcurrir los días y seguir limpiando patios, don Lucio vio que una piel engrosada crecía en el lugar de la ampolla y ya no dolía, se había convertido en un callo.En ocasiones, los cristianos formamos callos espirituales en nuestro corazón. La primera vez que cometemos la falta, duele, nos arrepentimos y prometemos que no volverá a pasar. Quizás prometemos que nunca más vamos a ingerir ese alimento dañino a nuestro organismo, o quizás que nunca más veré ese tipo de publicaciones en internet, o que nunca más diré mentiras, o que no seguiré enviando mensajes a esa persona, o que no ocurrirá de nuevo lo que pasó ayer con aquel chico. Pero sucede de nuevo, vuelve a doler y con el arrepentimiento volvemos a prometer que no pasará de nuevo... y vuelve a pasar, pero ahora duele menos, hay menos remordimiento.La siguiente vez, ya no duele, ya es normal y lo que ha ocurrido es que ya hay callos cuando hemos hecho que el Espíritu Santo se retire de nuestra vida. Por eso ya no duele, por eso ya es normal y el pecado se vuelve un estilo de vida fácil de seguir. Pero hay una buena noticia, Jesús quiere quitar el callo de tu corazón hecho piedra y darte un corazón de carne dispuesto a obedecerlo.

Tres días después del devastador terremoto que sacudió Afganistán y dejó más de 1.400 muertos, miles de habitantes en zonas remotas siguen esperando ayuda. Las cifras de víctimas podrían aumentar de forma significativa en un país golpeado por la crisis económica y el aislamiento internacional bajo el régimen talibán. Paradójicamente, este desastre podría convertirse en una oportunidad para que los talibanes intenten reforzar su legitimidad, explica Cristina de Lucio, doctora en estudios de Asia y África del Colegio de México. Afganistán vivió el domingo uno de los peores sismos en décadas, en un contexto marcado por el aislamiento internacional de los talibanes tras cuatro años en el poder. Para Cristina de Lucio, doctora en estudios de Asia y África del Colegio de México, una situación que ya era muy difícil ha empeorado con este desastre natural.  "Desde que llegaron los talibanes al poder en 2021 se congelaron los fondos que ascendían, por ejemplo, a aproximadamente 9 millones de dólares de fondos estadounidenses. Eso produjo, por supuesto, una crisis económica y a nivel de efectivo. Y eso tuvo consecuencias en términos de acceso a la canasta básica, a poder cubrir las necesidades básicas. Hoy, cuatro años después, la situación se agudiza con esta disminución al financiamiento de la USAID, que se hizo concretamente entre marzo y abril. Esta agencia de desarrollo internacional el año pasado aportaba el 45% de la ayuda a Afganistán. También redujo sus aportaciones el Programa Mundial de Alimentos. Entonces, tenemos ese escenario en donde se han reducido las principales ayudas. Y no solo ha sido Estados Unidos, sino también Reino Unido, Francia, Alemania y Suecia. Esos países también han recortado sus aportaciones. Se han cerrado, por ejemplo, muchos hospitales y clínicas. Entonces, ahora con esta tragedia no se tienen esos recursos y esto, por supuesto, compromete la vida de las personas". Hasta ahora, las autoridades talibanas no han presentado un plan de emergencia para asistir a los damnificados ni para la reconstrucción. Su mensaje se limita a reconocer que no pueden afrontar la crisis sin apoyo externo. Según Cristina de Lucio, esa postura revela una estrategia velada: "Afganistán es un país que, en 2021 cuando los talibanes llegaron al gobierno, dependía en un 75% de la ayuda extranjera. Es verdad que el país está en una condición de crisis y que hay dificultad para gestionar en razón de esta dependencia económica. Esto es indiscutible. Ellos no están mintiendo. Pero sí creo que están aprovechando esta coyuntura para incentivar, por un lado, el reconocimiento de su gobierno. Al mostrarse de cara al público como incapaces de gestionar esa tragedia, también hay una velada búsqueda, en cierto modo, de un reconocimiento de los talibanes como gobierno. Esto podría permitirles no solo evitar que se sigan reduciendo los financiamientos provenientes del exterior, sino que también se les vea como un interlocutor válido".
