You will have seen Faye Marsay in so many incredible movies and TV shows, including my favourite movie Pride, playing Maisie William's arch nemesis, The Waif in Game of Thrones and Ten Pound Poms but it's her latest TV show that has got millions of people talking. In case you have missed it, Faye plays DS Misha Frank in Netflix's limited series, Adolescence which follows a family and society turned upside down after 13-year Jamie is arrested for murdering a female schoolmate. In this episode Faye drops some many insightful and interesting stories about filming the show and the overdue conversations the show is starting about incel culture, misogyny and how social media is raising our children. Faye also opens up about her own horrific experiences with social media whilst she starred in Game of Thrones and one of the moments on a set that shows we need more vocal male allies for women. Faye also talks about dealing with clssisim as a northern working class actor, exploring her sexuality and just how meaningful it was to play one of the first openly queer characters in the 50 year long history of the Star Wars franchise, in the Disney+ show, Andor which is back for season two on 23rd April. We really pack a lot into this episode and if you love this conversation as much as I do get in touch with me across socials @joshsmithhosts as I always love hearing from you. Send us a Text Message.Arya acts as a servant in the House of Black and White. Despite her claims, she still can't shake her identity as Arya Stark. She decides to shed her worldly possessions, all except Needle, earning her a promotion to acolyte. Armed with a smattering of Braavosi, she's next to go out into the city and sell seafood. Mackelly and Simon ask for a menu.Chapter Review:Arya Stark is settling into life as a servant in the House of Black and White. When asked by the Kindly Man who she is, Arya dutifully says “no one.” Invariably, the Kindly Man says she lies. The Kindly Man tells her she doesn't have to stay here. He can place her in other environments she'd find more suitable or put her on a ship back to Westeros. Arya is insistent she wants to remain in the House of Black and White. One day the Kindly Man tells her she must rid herself of her worldly possessions, as they belong to Arya of House Stark. That night, Arya takes them all to the canal and throws them in. She hesitates when it's time to toss Needle. She thinks of the remarkable twist of fate that brought the sword back to her after it had been stolen, and decides that the Old Gods wanted her to have it. Therefore, she hides it under a cobblestone outside of the temple.Although she never told the Kindly Man of her actions, he seemed to know. The next day he tells her the history of the religion of the Many-Faced God. She's then given the robes of an acolyte. He also tasks Arya with learning Braavosi and teaching the Waif the Common Tongue. The pair practice by showing each other items and saying the word. In an attempt to help Arya lie better, the pair begin playing a lying game. The Waif seems to know when Arya is lying, but Arya just guesses. Eventually, the Kindly Man feels that Arya's grasp of Braavosi is good enough for her to go out into the city. She will sell seafood for a man, but she needs a new name. They decide on Cat. With that, Arya exits the temple into the Braavosi night, as happy as she's been for a long time.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Arya Stark - Younger daughter of Ned and Catelyn Stark.Kindly Man - Priest of the Many-Faced God.Waif - Priestess of the Many-Faced God.Braavos - A free city of Braavos in Essos.Multi-Faced God - A god worshiped in Essos that embodies Support the Show.Support us: Buy us a Cup of Arbor Gold, or become a sustainer and receive cool perks Donate to our cause Use our exclusive URL for a free 30-day trial of Audible Buy or gift Marriott Bonvoy points through our affiliate link Rate and review us at Apple Podcasts, Spotify, podchaser.com, and elsewhere.Find us on social media: Discord Twitter @GhostsHarrenhal Facebook Instagram YouTube All Music credits to Ross Bugden:INSTAGRAM! : https://instagram.com/rossbugden/ (rossbugden) TWITTER! : https://twitter.com/RossBugden (@rossbugden) YOUTUBE! : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kthxycmF25M

While I am not in the habit of posting poor reviews, I wanted to talk about these three books - even if I didn't like them much. I've rarely posted reviews of books that were not for me mostly because I chose narrowly from a narrow genre: horror. It is not to say they were poorly written at all, they are all good. I had waited for Waif and am so happy to own a copy; Nineteen Little Stab Wounds was a delightful find; My Throat an Open Grave is just a wonderfully complete package from pillar to post and beautifully written. They are all dark, twisty, horrific or weird. But... They were just not for me at all. Before I get too deep into that: here is the link to the radio drama version of Sticks by Karl Edward Wagner https://www.zbs.org/audio/Sticks.mp3 Now, be it the recency, or the fact that I wanted to like these books so much - I also still want to share them because I know they do and will have fans! Especially My Throat and Open Grave. Biblical connotations of the title aside, it was a Puritan nightmare! It's a really beautifully written book and beautifully bound. The one review I did edit heavily was for My Throat an Open Grave where I felt I was reading a subtweet for a hundred pages or heavily disguised Christian propaganda. It was a strange feeling because they have teen troubles that are not resolved in a wholesome way, the outcome is the opposite of an after-school special, and the whole problem started because of a cult-like Christian town. I am still not sure why I felt I was being sold snake oil throughout. On the other side of that, I felt the pandering to angsty teens was a little over the top and something I thought we had left behind over a decade ago. I will say the twist was unique and I loved how revenge played a big part in the first big resolution here, but I still felt at odds with the central theme as I came away with ‘women are bad and you should feel bad' when I am sure the opposite was intended. Anyhow! I'll be reading a few great books to come, and The Haunting of Velkwood! By the early 1950s, Jane Russell (1921–2011) should have been forgotten. Her career was launched on what is arguably the most notorious advertising campaign in cinema history, which invited filmgoers to see Howard Hughes's The Outlaw (1943) and to "tussle with Russell." Throughout the 1940s, she was nicknamed the "motionless picture actress" and had only three films in theaters. With such a slow, inauspicious start, most aspiring actresses would have given up or faded away. Instead, Russell carved out a place for herself in Hollywood and became a memorable and enduring star. Christina Rice offers the first biography of the actress and activist perhaps most well-known for her role in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953). Despite the fact that her movie career was stalled for nearly a decade, Russell's filmography is respectable. She worked with some of Hollywood's most talented directors―including Howard Hawks, Raoul Walsh, Nicholas Ray, and Josef von Sternberg―and held her own alongside costars such as Marilyn Monroe, Robert Mitchum, Clark Gable, Vincent Price, and Bob Hope. She also learned how to fight back against Howard Hughes, her boss for more than thirty-five years, and his marketing campaigns that exploited her physical appearance. Beyond the screen, Rice reveals Russell as a complex and confident woman. She explores the star's years as a spokeswoman for Playtex as well as her deep faith and work as a Christian vocalist. Rice also discusses Russell's leadership and patronage of the WAIF foundation, which for many years served as the fundraising arm of the International Social Service (ISS) agency. WAIF raised hundreds of thousands of dollars, successfully lobbied Congress to change laws, and resulted in the adoption of tens of thousands of orphaned children. For Russell, the work she did to help unite families overshadowed any of her onscreen achievements. On the surface, Jane Russell seemed to live a charmed life, but Rice illuminates her darker moments and her personal struggles, including her empowered reactions to the controversies surrounding her films and her feelings about being portrayed as a sex symbol. Mean...Moody...Magnificent!: Jane Russell and the Marketing of a Hollywood Legend (UP of Kentucky, 2021) offers a fresh perspective on a star whose legacy endures not simply because she forged a notable film career, but also because she effectively used her celebrity to benefit others. Ep 49q Thigh Guys Ep 1 - A War on Artifice and CompulsionThe Thigh Guys are Will, Willie and Gordon and today we're not telling stories, no no no. Today Will declares war... on artifice in general, but on makeup in particular. Our first ~10 minutes are a wide ranging philosophical discussion, touching on Marxism, Bon Scott, and Will's concept of contradiction before diving into some "common" female beauty standards that Will takes exception to.But ultimately it comes down to makeup. Will has a very serious critique of women who wear makeup. And Willie finds Will's critique revolting and heroically pushes back while Gordon tries in vain to keep up.Along the way, we meet the following characters: The Club Bunny, The Farmer's Daughter, The Wincing Shojo, The X Frame, The Pear and the Waif.Email: wolfwhocriedwomen@gmail.com

And the one that no one's been looking forward to, see what I did there? This episode is infamous as another 8th episode that feels like a penultimate to the penultimate, wrapping up a lot of the ancellary storylines before we move on to the explosive climax that is Battle of the Bastards & Winds of Winter. The only problem? This is the episode where it really feels like D&D gave up. While not every storyline in this episode misses, a large chunk of this feels like filler, leading up to an ending action set piece that feels more at home in a Mortal Kombat video game than Game of Thrones. The Hound carries out his revenge against the men who wiped out his friends, leading him back to the Brotherhood without Banners, who have a new mission. Cersei shows the Sparrows that she is not listening to them anymore, but when Tommen bans trials by combat, she seems doomed, at least until Qyburn gives her a valuable bit of information. In the Riverlands, Brienne arrives and offers Jaime a deal to allow her to lead the Blackfish and his forces north to assist Jon & Sansa, allowing him to take the castle back peacefully, but when this fails, Jaime is forced to use Edmure as a bargaining chip. It all ends in Braavos, with a storyline resolution that gets more and more confusing as the years go on. After being rescued and treated by Lady Crane, Arya is attacked once again by the Waif, who kills Lady Crane in a manner that still is confusing 6 years later, before chasing Arya through the streets in one of the most obvious and non-secretive parkour action scenes before Arya lures her to her little hiding spot, and rather than letting us see the payoff for all those training sessions, we're instead treated to...darkness. Its confusing, its out of place, it makes no sense, and it becomes more and more apparent as the years go on that Benioff & Weiss just wanted to be done with Braavos. At least we get Battle of the Bastards next week, only on #talkinthrones --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/talkintvpodcastgmailcom/support
The sideplots continue with Season 6, Episode 7, "The Broken Man." This episode is special for a variety of different reasons, but namely, because it features the return of a fan favorite character who was previously thought dead by many, Sandor "The Hound" Clegane. The episode chronicles his stay with a small commune of Riverland civilians led by the charismatic Brother Ray, portrayed in a guest spot by Deadwood's Ian McShane, and shows the Hound returning to the fold by refusing to remain broken and helpless as the forces that be continue to terrorize the innocents of the realm. In the North, Jon & Sansa continue their recruitment of their allies to take back Winterfell, but find more opposed to them than previously thought, forcing Sansa to make a desperate move. In King's Landing, Margaery begs Olenna to remove herself from harm's way, while Cersei attempts to make amends, only for Olenna to throw it back at her face. Jaime arrives at Riverrun to treat with the Blackfish, but finds him to be not at all hospitable. Theon & Yara stop off for a quick drink and a pep talk. Arya struts her way down the docks of Braavos, throwing gold ay any sailor willing to take her home, and then seems surprised when the Waif pops out of nowhere and stabs her, but the grace of the Many Faced God allows her to magically survive. It's all here on another action packed episode of Talkin' Thrones only on the #talkintvpodcast --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/talkintvpodcastgmailcom/support
