Jarrett Adams is a defense attorney, author, and founder of Life After Justice, a nonprofit focused on fighting wrongful convictions and supporting reintegration for exonerated individuals. In this episode, we get into his story of being wrongfully convicted at 17, the realities of navigating the criminal justice system, and the harsh conditions inside a supermax prison. We discuss the systemic issues that lead to wrongful convictions, including overburdened public defenders, incentivized witnesses, and racial bias in jury selection. We also explore the prison industrial complex, its economic incentives, and how it profits from incarcerated individuals.

This week on Everyday Injustice Jarrett Adams – himself exonerated of a wrongful conviction – is seeking to undo a massive injustice in Virginia. Despite the fact that a jury found Terrence Richardson and Ferrone Claiborne not guilty of murder, a judge was able to sentence them to life in prison. They have currently spent 22 years behind bars, but Jarrett Adams is trying to free them, having recently argued before the Virginia Supreme Court. “The Court's decision to sentence Terrence and Ferrone to life in prison despite being found not guilty robbed due process of its very meaning,” said Jarrett Adams. “The U.S. Supreme Court must do away with its ruling in U.S. v Watts, which gives a judge the discretion to make a jury's finding meaningless, and prevent further miscarriages of justice from occurring like the one we see in this case.” Listen to Adams describing this remarkable and unthinkable injustice in the criminal legal system.

Jarrett Adams was a high school student and made one mistake - he went to a college party, ending up wrongly convicted for the rape of a white college woman having been convicted by an all-white jury - and facing nearly 30 years in prison. It took him nearly ten years to get exonerated with the help of the Wisconsin Innocence Project. Amazingly, he took the lessons he learned as a jailhouse attorney during his incarceration and worked his way through law school and now has a non-profit, dedicated to exonerating the wrongly convicted. As he explains - his book takes you through his journey and you feel like you are in the shoes of that scared 17-year-old, who has no idea what is in store for him. Listen as Jarrett Adams talks about his experience behind bars, being wrongly convicted, how he got through law school and his current work. He also discusses the role that race played in his wrongful conviction and the criminal legal system.

The Successful Business and Practice of Law - Presented by LAWCLERK - Jarrett Adams - My Journey From Being Wrongfully Convicted to Now Fighting For JusticeHOST: Greg GarmanIntroduction:Welcome to The Successful Business and Practice of Law. On today's episode, I'm talking with Jarrett Adams about the changes that need to be made in the criminal justice system. Jarrett shares his tragic and inspiring story about being wrongfully convicted of a crime he didn't commit.  But instead of dwelling on this horrible injustice that has been done, Jarrett decided to go to law school and change things from inside the system.   Jarrett has worked with the Innocence Project and is the co-founder of Life After Justice, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing wrongful convictions and developing an ecosystem of support and empowerment for exonerees' as they rebuild their lives after exoneration. He is an attorney, author of Redeeming Justice, and a man on a mission to help those who have been neglected and wronged. The Successful Business and Practice of Law is brought to you by LAWCLERK. This is a place where we can have conversations with lawyers who have achieved outsized success, those who are building innovative business models, and those who are simply doing things differently. We may also cover how technology is changing what we do. The main focus, however, is on how we run our businesses and practices in order to make them better.Talking Points:●      Problems with the criminal justice system●      The difference between the US adversarial system and the English system●      The impact of race within the criminal justice system ●      Jarrett's experience when he was wrongfully convicted of a crime●      The realism behind going from warehousing people to rehabilitation●      What led to Jarrett's wrongful conviction●      What it's going to take to make changes●      Judicial discretion versus mandatory sentencing●      Building a business model around doing good●      What Jarrett wants to buildResources/Links:Jarrett Adams: https://jarrettadamslaw.com/Redeeming Justice by Jarrett Adams: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/624157/justice-for-sale-by-jarrett-adams/9780593395905Life After Justice: https://www.lifeafterjustice.org/Innocence Project: https://innocenceproject.org/LawClerk: official websiteQuotes:“You can call yourself whatever you want but when you're an attorney, you serve the people.” – Jarrett Adams“The scariest thing I saw was the people getting out of prison in the winter time, only to return by the end of summer.” – Jarrett Adams“We have to go with discretion but the discretion can't be unchecked.” – Jarrett Adams

At 17 years old, Jarrett Adams was wrongfully convicted of sexual assault and sentenced to 18 years in a maximum security prison. He served 10 years before being exonerated with the help of the Wisconsin Innocence Project. Adams would then go on to become a lawyer himself, with the goal of helping those who, like himself, had faced discrimination in the legal system.rnrnIn August 2016, Jarrett Adams joined the City Club to share this story. In his new book, "Redeeming Justice: From Defendant to Defender, My Fight for Equity on Both Sides of a Broken System", Adams outlines the racist tactics used to convict young men of color, the unique challenges facing exonerees once released, and how the lack of equal representation in our courts is a failure not only of empathy but of our collective ability to uncover the truth.rnrnWhat are the limits, and possibilities, of our country's system of law? And what can we learn from Jarrett Adams' story to work toward a justice system is truly just for all?rnrnJarrett Adams earned his Juris Doctorate from Loyola University Chicago School of Law in May 2015 and started a public-interest law fellowship with Ann Claire Williams, judge for the Seventh Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, the same court that reversed his conviction. Jarrett also clerked in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York with the late Honorable Deborah Batts. After working for the Innocence Project in New York, he launched the Law Office of Jarrett Adams, PLLC, in 2017, and now practices in both federal and state courts throughout the country.

Jarrett Adams is an attorney with the Innocence Project, Co-Founder of Life After Justice, re-entry specialist and advocate for criminal justice reform. Before Jarrett founded Life After Justice, he found himself in a fight for his life and justice.Jarrett M. Adams was wrongfully convicted of sexual assault at age 17 and sentenced to 28 years in a maximum security prison. After serving nearly 10 years and filing multiple appeals, Jarrett was exonerated with the assistance of the Wisconsin Innocence Project. Jarrett used the injustice he endured as inspiration to become an advocate for the underserved and often uncounted. As a first step, Jarrett earned his Juris Doctorate from Loyola University Chicago School of Law in May 2015 and started a public interest law fellowship with Ann Claire Williams, judge for the Seventh Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. This is the same court that reversed Jarrett's conviction because of his trial lawyer's constitutional deficiencies.
