Pursuing The Path

Series: N/AService: Sun AMType: SermonSpeaker: Terry SlackFear can be a surprisingly powerful motivator. Though I understand God is not wanting us to live lives marked by abject fear, there is great spiritual danger when we experience no fear at all. A lack of it can cause us to take things like security and assurance to an unbiblical extreme. If it is possible for a Christian to fall from grace and lose their salvation (and the Bible says it is), then a healthy fear of God can be a good thing, motivating us to continued faithfulness and growth.

Series: N/AService: Sun AMType: SermonSpeaker: Terry SlackBecause light and darkness are universal experiences, biblical writers and even the Lord Himself often employed this pair of images to convey spiritual truth. In His words and His works Jesus demonstrated Himself to be the Son of God, yet most closed their eyes and stopped their ears. It wasn't a case of insufficent light, but a matter of choosing to remain in darkness. In this section Jesus makes it clear that if we're unable to see Him clearly, the problem lies with us and not Him.

Series: Embracing Our Identity as SonsService: Sun PMType: Bible ClassSpeaker: Terry SlackWe wrap up our look at the sonship of Jesus and our own sonship in the writings of John the apostle.

Series: Embracing Our Identity as SonsService: Sun PMType: Bible ClassSpeaker: Terry SlackThe sonship of Jesus is one of the key themes in John. In fact, John draws a very clear line of distinction between Jesus' relationship with the Father and our own. Here we learn some important elements of what it means to truly be a son (daughter) of God.

Series: N/AService: Sun AMType: SermonSpeaker: Terry Slack“Walking with God.” It’s a phrase we hear a lot these days, often without the user understanding what it really means. It describes a slow, yet steady progression in the right direction. It can also be a difficult journey requiring long periods of waiting and a vigorous faith. Such is the case with Abraham in this chapter as his walk with his Creator becomes even deeper and richer.

Series: N/AService: Sun AMType: SermonSpeaker: Terry SlackWe live in a culture that’s profoundly focused on the individual, but a mindset centered on self is utterly foreign to the gospel. Paul’s letter to the church at Ephesus is all about unity in the church. In our text the apostle reveals that walking in a manner worthy of our calling involves three things as we pursue genuine oneness. This morning’s lesson will be shorter than normal to accommodate for our annual congregational meeting following our assembly.

Series: N/AService: Sun AMType: SermonSpeaker: Terry SlackThere’s no better time for both reflection and resolution than the beginning of a new year. I’m not talking about weak “resolutions” that fade by January’s end, but genuine commitments in the realm of greatest importance. Will the new year see changes, not so much in your weight or financial condition, but in terms of your relationship with God? This is a great text to remind us that salvation doesn’t bring spiritual maturity, it only initiates the process for potential growth.

Series: Embracing Our Identity as SonsService: Sun PMType: Bible ClassSpeaker: Terry SlackWe conclude our look at God's covenant with David before moving to the New Testament and beginning a look at God's Son, Jesus.

Series: N/AService: Sun AMType: SermonSpeaker: Terry SlackTragically, there’s a growing number of people who think that Christianity is a purely individual endeavor. In other words, they can “do life” the way God wants independent of anyone else. But true Christianity is not a “me” thing, but a “we” thing. This morning we’ll introduce our theme for the new year. As we make our way through our readings in 2026 the divine viewpoint will become abundantly clear—we are better together!

Series: Embracing Our Identity as SonsService: Sun PMType: Bible ClassSpeaker: Terry SlackWe finish our look at "God's Prodigal" from Hosea 11 before moving to God's covenant with David in 2 Samuel 7. Here God makes a remarkable promise to David, one couched in the language of sonship.

Here we not only find word about Israel's sin, but the heartbreak their sin caused to their loving Father.

Series: N/AService: Sun AMType: SermonSpeaker: Terry SlackWho was Jesus? Sadly, this time of the year most people think of Him as nothing more than a weak and non-threatening infant, while ignoring the fact that this infant eventually grew into a man whose life was so influential that that it split history into two parts. This morning we’ll look at a few snapshots that never cease to challenge our thinking and our living.

Series: N/AService: Sun AMType: SermonSpeaker: Terry SlackFor the Christian, sin is the ultimate enemy. It is opposed to us all of the time and in every way. Because of the great danger it poses, the saint can’t afford to be tolerant or casual toward it. In fact, the Bible goes to the extent of commanding us to kill it (specific language found in 3 NT passages). But what can we do to achieve this important objective? We’ll take a look at few strategies I hope will prove effective.

Series: Embracing Our Identity as SonsService: Sun PMType: Bible ClassSpeaker: Terry SlackThe Bible is much more than a book of precepts and principles, it's also a book filled with images and pictures. While some images are impersonal and inanimate (salt, light, seed), other metaphors are more personal in nature (king/subjects, master/slaves). But the metaphor that more greatly reveals the heart of God is derived from home and family. God invites us to be part of His family. We'll introduce the powerful theme of sonship.

Series: N/AService: Sun AMType: SermonSpeaker: Terry SlackEver since the fall of man God has sought ways to dwell among His people. First was the tabernacle, followed by the temple, and then as a human being in the form of Jesus. But He didn’t stop with the incarnation. Today, every believer is said to be a temple of God, which implies that all of life is to be an expression of worship. Worship isn’t confined to a physical location, but instead is to be taken on the road.

Series: N/AService: Sun AMType: SermonSpeaker: Terry SlackThe Hebrew writer makes it clear that holiness isn’t something optional for the Christian, but is a necessary element for those who desire to see the Lord (12:14). But what steps can be taken to equip us for this pursuit? The answer from 1 Timothy is that while holiness involves breaking destructive habits, it must also include the cultivation of beneficial ones.

Series: N/AService: Sun AMType: SermonSpeaker: Terry SlackAdmittedly, it’s not a topic we like to talk about. In fact, many are looking to eliminate the very idea of it altogether or at the very least reduce hell’s “temperature” a bit. What they fail to realize is that Jesus had more to say on the subject than all of the Bible’s other preachers combined. And as the Son of God, isn’t He the best source for the truth on the matter?
