Between ourselves and others, there is a space. Sometimes that space is too small for certain topics. The space can be stretched and even be broken. But sometimes you meet another person with a shared spirit. And the space between is big enough for almost

Synopsis: The Space Between is trying something a little different for season two - release, with great regularity rather than complete spontaneity, our episodes each month (on the 15th) which means pre-recording episodes. This episode was recorded exactly 4 months ago. Which means that we were catching up before the 2nd COVID lock down, after the 1st presidential debate, prior to the election .... and we're talking about all that stuff and more. Fascinating to listen to our predictions about these things and see how they aged. We hope you enjoy catching up with us and once again we look forward to further dialogue here on our Facebook Page. Lets lean in as a community rather than away. Welcome to the Space Between. Please look for us on Facebook ("The Space Between Podcast") as a way to continue dialogue regarding episode topics. Synopsis: The Underground Bunker was alive with conversation regarding where we are in our spiritual lives. On a previous episode Nick mentioned that he was not a Universalist and Doug mentioned that perhaps he was a Buddhist. And although this particular episode was on our upcoming roster we felt that this may one the appropriate time to jump in. We encourage you to consider where you might be in your own Spiritual Journey ... how would you describe your influences and your particular theological understandings? Book References: 1. Synopsis: For hours the underground bunker was full of conversation regarding deconstruction, stories, analogies and more. And that was before the "record" button was ever hit. On this episode the guys discuss what deconstruction is, why it might be important, share some stories, some word pictures and their thoughts on the importance of making sure that construction is a part of the process. They give some tips on what might be helpful if you are in the process of deconstruction now and invite ongoing dialogue on the Facebook page. Synopsis: This morning the guys come to you from deep in the underground studio where they're far from the public in order to talk about COVID-19. Specifically, what role does the church need to play in this pandemic. The conversation includes perspectives from a pastor (Nick) and from a health care worker (Doug) about our social responsibility, social needs and how we can get creative. There are no real answers here ... just honest and open dialogue about where we are today in this historical moment. Update (3/21/20) - Doug would like to make it clear that while he referenced a 3-4 month window for a vaccine he really meant that would be the window for trials to begin and for a person to enter a trial for treatment. With the help of an alarm that keeps them to 14 minutes per topic - the conversation is fast and a lot of ground is covered. Due to the simple fact that it is possible to feel the rug pulled out from under you regarding these topics, Nick and Doug commit to begin a Facebook group where further conversation can be had. What is the meaning of life? Are we seriously tackling this? Sort of...we're really just talking about some of our conclusions and the perplexities of life but we do end up tugging at the edges of this question. This episode finishes our three part series on Death, Birth and Life. Doug and Nick bring unique perspectives to this conversation that discusses a spiritual understanding of life, the sacredness of life, forgiveness, and the beauty of waiting. Synopsis: "Let's just turn the mics on and have a conversation about death and see where it goes..." That is the entire premise of how this episode evolved. Doug, as a Respiratory Therapist and Nick, as a Pastor - each have different takes and experiences with death. Yet, some similarities rise to the top as there is a physical and spiritual element to both vocations and both experiences. The conversation moves from simply talking about death to spirituality motivated by fear of death and then to the importance of self reflection and the willingness to kill the monsters in our lives. Synopsis: On our final episode about the Enneagram Doug introduces us to the subtypes: self preservation, social and sexual (or one-to-one). Understanding these subtypes dramatically impacts our understanding of both the enneagram and our individual numbers. These subtypes "stack" in that they have an order, 1-3, that coordinates with how strong they are revealed in our personalities. The third subtype, is the weakest, and normally "falls out of view," which means that it is virtually unrepresented in our personality. Synopsis: Doug does a fantastic job of relating a vast amount of information to us regarding each number on the Enneagram and he works with Nick to ensure that through the use of story the listener is able to push further into how these numbers play out in the personalities of those around us. With this episode and the last one you should now have a comprehensive overview of each of the numbers. We began our Enneagram conversation with a 10,000 foot view by describing the triads and their relationships. Now, we're getting into the nitty gritty of each number. Doug starts by sharing the history of the Enneagram with us and then refreshing us on the triads. After that we jump in to 8's, 9's and 10's. In case those numbers don't fit you - stay tuned for the next episode which covers the remaining numbers. In the last episode and in this episode Doug mentions a band named Sleeping At Last that did an album of songs where each Enneagram number has a song devoted to them. We've referenced the Enneagram several times in past episodes and have had some requests for an Enneagram explanation. Today, we scratch the surface of the Enneagram by talking about some of the basics: 1. What are the numbers? 2. What are the triads? 3. What is healthy vs unhealthy? 4. What is integration vs disintegration? These questions will help to give you an overview of the Enneagram. If this is your first introduction to it we suggest also checking out the links below. Doug will describe the Enneagram symbol and triads - to which there are links below. The Liturgist Podcast is a particularly good introduction to the Enneagram as well. Enjoy! We continue divulging the beliefs that were once sacred to us but that are no longer held. This exercise has been an incredible opportunity to get to know one another even deeper but what may be greater than that is the audible articulation of our current location in our faith journey. It's like a GPS pinging so that we know both how far we have come and far we need to go. This episode grapples with a inclusivity, descent, God's anger and penal substitionary atonement. What are some of the things that you used to believe that you no longer stake a claim in? Have your beliefs shifted significantly? Or have you just tweaked them a little here and a little there? Doug and Nick each grapple with five things that their belief's have change about. This episode covers meditation, starfish, women in ministry and the beauty of a simplistic faith. Doug and Nick share succinctly and honestly about their beliefs and allow each other to press in and push back on what they're sharing. You're in for a fun and candid conversation! We share our perspectives on non-violence, some stories from our lives where violence has had an impact and dialogue around what direction people of faith may be called to. Non-violence is not a new topic and we openly admit that we haven't even worked out all of our own beliefs around this . . . which seems to be made clear by the direction of the podcast. But, we also feel that we have a few thoughts to offer. Maybe some that are helpful as we quite potential oversimplify the issue.
