This special conversation will be led by Stephanae McCoy, founder of Bold Blind Beauty, and will invite us into what Bold Blind Beauty calls “The Space Between,” that quiet internal place where self awareness becomes our boldest compass. Together we will explore questions like: What does your internal space feel like when life becomes overwhelming. How do we slow ourselves down in a world that constantly demands reaction. Can mindfulness become a kind of white cane for the mind, helping us navigate emotional obstacles before we collide with them. How do access, inclusion, and representation apply not only to the world around us, but also to the relationship we have with ourselves. This conversation will gently explore emotional blind spots, self acceptance, internal vision, mindfulness practices, and the beauty that can exist inside the pause itself. We will also discuss how accepting our blindness, whether physical, emotional, or metaphorical, can actually strengthen the way we move through the world with intention, compassion, and courage. This is not a lecture. It is a conversation. A space for reflection. A space for honesty. A space for breath. Letting Go to Become Who You Truly Are – Deborah Santana

The Retirement Wisdom Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 11, 2026 31:21

There’s a challenge that comes with being known for what you do. When you move on you now have to figure out who you truly are. Deborah Santana spent more than three decades inside one of the most recognizable partnerships in American music as COO of the New Santana Band, co-architect of the Milagro Foundation, and the steady, contemplative presence behind a global touring life with her ex-husband, the legendary musician Carlos Santana. At an age when most people are quietly winding down, she did the opposite: she walked away from a 34-year marriage, dismantled the identity she had built around someone else's career, and started over. She earned a master's degree in her 60s, founded a new nonprofit (Do A Little), wrote a second memoir (Loving the Fire: Choosing Me, Finding Freedom), and became a trustee of major cultural institutions. But this is not a celebrity interview. It's an exploration of transitions and later-life reinvention. You’ll hear about her experience and the lessons she learned that may help you. She shares the foundational daily contemplative practice she built, the calendar block for herself disguised as “a meeting” she used to jump start her writing, and the people audit she did to illuminate who is toxic and who is the light in her life. Deborah describes how liberating it can be to be a beginner again, if you’re willing. I often say “You don't stop growing just because you retire.” But, it’s not just a saying and Deborah’s story is an case study. If you’re ready to let go of your past and discover who you truly are now, this conversation is for you.   “When you have everything stripped away that you were known as, it is a wonderful opportunity to create exactly who you are.” — Deborah Santana   You’ll walk away with: A vocabulary for the identity work that retirement requires. And not just for the “what's next” part, but also the words for the “who am I now” part. A useful framework (the Four C's) for organizing life after a major transition. A replicable practice for protecting time for the work of “becoming” even when the people around you don't quite yet understand what you’re doing. __________________________ Bio Deborah Santana is the author of Loving the Fire: Choosing Me, Finding Freedom, Space Between the Stars: My Journey to An Open Heart and the editor of the acclaimed anthology All the Women in My Family Sing. Her work has been featured by Vogue, Oprah, and NPR, among other national and literary outlets. She is the founder of the Do A Little Foundation, which supports women and girls in the areas of health, education, and happiness. Her work explores identity, social justice, spirituality, and the power of collective voice. She is mother to three artists: Salvador Santana, Stella Santana and Angelica Santana. The kind of awakening that shifts anything real doesn't happen in solitude. It happens when you cross the street and show up for someone else. We are living in a world that is more digitally connected than ever, yet there are millions of people who are struggling with loneliness. Whether it's your marriage, friendships, or work, that lack of deep connection can quietly affect your overall health and happiness. Today, I'm joined by my friend Michael Trainer, who has a new book out called Resonance: The Art and Science of Human Connection. Michael is one of the most fascinating people I've ever met, and his work is centered around helping people create deeper, more aligned relationships in every area of life. From co-creating the Global Citizen Festival, which has helped raise over $40 billion to defeat extreme poverty, to studying human connection across cultures and the neuroscience behind it, Michael brings a unique blend of real-world experience and science-based insights. In our conversation, we discussed the loneliness epidemic and why so many people feel disconnected despite having greater access to communication than ever before. Michael shares what it means to create "resonance" in your relationships, how the people you surround yourself with directly influence your emotional and physical well-being, and practical ways to become someone who attracts and builds powerful, life-giving connections. We also explore how to identify the relationships that energize you versus the ones that drain you, and how taking intentional actions can completely transform the quality of your relationships and your life. IntroductionThis week we have one of the most honest and tender conversations this podcast has ever held. Meg sits down with Dr Raphaela Itzikowitz Geva, specialist paediatrician, neurodevelopment expert, and founder of The Full Spectrum app. Together they explore what it truly means to raise a child whose brain works differently. Whether you are a parent who has just started to notice something, a family in the middle of a long diagnostic journey, or someone who received a label years ago and is still finding their footing, this episode is for you. What Neurodivergence Actually MeansRaphaela unpacks the difference between neurodiversity and neurodivergence with clarity and compassion. Neurodiversity is simply the reality that all human brains are different. Neurodivergence is where those differences create specific challenges in navigating a demanding world. Crucially, she reframes the entire conversation: this is not about fixing an incorrect child. It is about understanding how a child processes their world so that we can support them to thrive within it.Guilt vs. Grief: Two Very Different ThingsOne of the most powerful moments in this episode is Raphaela's distinction between guilt and grief. Guilt asks: did I cause this? Grief says: this is not what I expected, and it is hard. Raphaela explains why neurodivergence is almost never anybody's fault, and why untangling these two emotions is one of the most liberating things a parent can do. She also addresses the moment of diagnosis itself, which for many parents holds both shock and, unexpectedly, relief.Neuroplasticity and the Early WindowThe early brain is wiring itself in real time, and what happens in those first years matters enormously. Raphaela explains neuroplasticity in plain language and makes a compelling case for early intervention. Not because we are changing the child to fit the world, but because we are shaping the experience of the child so they can explore their world with confidence. The window is open right now, and this conversation tells you exactly how to use it.The Space Between the NotesRaphaela introduces one of the most memorable ideas in this episode: the space between the notes. The notes are the therapy sessions and clinical appointments. The space is everything that happens at home, every day, in the ordinary moments of connection and repetition. She explains the three documents every parent receives when leaving her practice: a neurodevelopmental report, an Understanding Your Child document that decodes behaviour, and a Rationalised Action Map that gives families a clear, prioritised place to start. Why You Must ListenThis episode is not about adding more to your plate. It is about understanding. And understanding, as Raphaela says, is the key that unlocks a great deal of frustration. Her closing words are a gift to every parent on this journey: the journey is different. It is not less. Listen today, and share it with every parent who needs to hear it. I. Niching down is often the move founders resist most, especially when they are already building an audience and seeing traction. In this Dear FoundHer conversation, Lindsay Pinchuk talks with Dr. Amy Robbins, host of the Life, Death & the Space Between podcast, about how niching down became the turning point in her business. What started as a passion project evolved into a focused, revenue-generating offer once she stopped trying to serve everyone and began speaking directly to one specific group.Dr. Amy Robbins spent years building an audience through her show and growing her visibility in the spiritual space. The credibility was there, but the next step was unclear. Through a series of intentional career pivots, she recognized that therapists were asking for structured training in spiritually informed therapy. Niching down allowed her to create a continuing education program that strengthened her professional credibility and made her offer practical and professionally valuable. This conversation also explores the internal shifts behind the strategy. After experiencing exhaustion in private practice, she stepped back to create space for clearer decision-making and a path toward growth without burnout. If you are a founder with momentum but no defined direction, this episode offers a great example of how niching down can sharpen your message, simplify your marketing, and create sustainable growth built on focus rather than volume.Episode Breakdown:00:00 Dear FoundHer From the Forum and Dr. Amy Robbins' Founder Story01:24 From Private Practice to Spirituality and Building a Podcast Platform02:38 Turning a Podcast Into a Business Without Taking More Therapy Clients06:53 Taking a Sabbatical to Create Clarity and Build the Right Offer09:47 Pivoting From B2C to B2B With Spiritually Informed Therapy Training11:19 Using Continuing Education Credits to Drive Course Demand14:02 Building a Therapist Community and a B2B2C Referral Model22:10 Leveraging Podcast Guests for Partnerships and Business Growth27:21 Mindset, Comparison, and Staying Focused on Your Own Growth PathConnect with Dr. Amy Robbins:Follow Dr. Amy on InstagramListen to Life, Death & The Space Between with Dr. Amy RobbinsSubscribe to The FoundHer Files Follow Dear FoundHer on Instagram Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm Hosted on Acast.
