“Music is completely emotion-driven for me. If I don't feel it, I can't fake it. That's why I keep writing—to stay close to that feeling.” In this deeply reflective episode of The Design Of, Justin Ahrens sits down with musician, composer, and sonic storyteller Ryan O'Neal, best known as Sleeping At Last. With millions of listeners around the world and a body of work that's as emotionally rich as it is expansive, Ryan shares how he intentionally designs not just music—but meaning. We explore how Ryan's creative process is rooted in emotion, curiosity, and the desire to stay connected to what truly moves him. From writing songs inspired by the Enneagram to scoring film and television, Ryan talks about chasing wonder, navigating vulnerability, and using music as a mirror for growth. While Ryan is a musician, his approach offers powerful insights for anyone in business, branding, or leadership. His creative process models how to: + Lead with emotional intelligence—understanding the power of empathy in connection + Tell stories that resonate—by tapping into universal emotions and personal truths + Build a brand with heart—that earns trust, loyalty, and long-term impact + Design experiences that feel human—not just polished If you're trying to inspire teams, connect with customers, or create more meaningful marketing—this episode will remind you why feeling is often more powerful than strategy alone.

Jason Miller - We're spending a few weeks recapturing the power of an ancient Christian calling, exploring hospitality as the act that creates the conditions for someone else's experience of belonging. In our final week, we're learning to see hospitality as an act of faithful resistance against whole systems that war against the safety and belonging of people. This is an image of Joe Biden, but it's not a political image. That's not why I chose this. It's an image of the day that I think it's the day of his son, Beau's funeral. And he's waiting outside with his family for the casket to arrive. And he's surrounded by his grandchildren and his children and his wife. And they're standing in a line. Green Noise playlist on Spotify 3. Song: Front Porch, by Vontmer - check out all of his music, lots in that green frequency range, but this one is magic for little ones. 4. Video clip - JAWS - With and Without Music featuring Richard Dreyfuss and John Williams 5. Song: Pitter Patter Goes the Rain, by Christy Nockels. I've taught this song hundreds of times and never had a teacher or parent NOT say that there is magic in this song. Nockels herself says that she recorded a track of herself reading scripture or encouraging words in each of the songs on this album that you can't audibly hear but you can feel. Listen for yourself. 6. Journal question: when has music elicited a response in me that I did not expect? What kind of music was it? Where was I? How do I explain that reaction? 7. A primer on green, white, brown, and pink music/sound from Soundly 8. A few examples of music that unexpectedly ministered to me: Simple Gifts from Appalachian Spring, Aaron Copland, John Williams, Boston Pops Orchestra Beethoven's 5th Symphony, Second Movement, Andante (When I first heard this, I thought it sounded like what we'll hear in Heaven. I still do.) Rainbow, by Kacey Musgraves Four, by Sleeping At Last (lots of 'hidden tracks' in his music as well - hear him tell the story of this one in this podcast episode - how it was made)

Merry Christmas! No interview today. No monologue either. Just a simple, short and sweet song I wanted to give as a gift to anyone whose heart is hurting this holiday. Why I'm sharing this song with you:Since Christmas has fallen on a Monday this year, and I always release new episodes on Monday, I faced a dilemma. I thought it would be a disservice to any guest to ask them to do an episode that would air on a day that the average listener can be expected to have other priorities, and I didn't want to interrupt anyone's holiday with a silly request to listen to an interview instead of celebrating traditions with their loved ones. At the same time, I didn't want to lose the consistency of releasing one episode per week, which I've been doing since the podcast launched in May of 2022. A few weeks before Christmas, this beloved song came to me and said, "hey! Share me with your listeners for Christmas! I'm the perfect gift for your audience!" And I thought, that's perfect. So I reached out to the artist, got in touch with his licensing company, and shelled out the dollars for the rights to share this song with you as my way of saying thank you for supporting the show. As you may have noticed, one of the things I like to do on this podcast is to highlight people of exceptional character and virtue. Ryan O'Neal, who goes by the artist name Sleeping at Last, is one such individual, and I simply adore him. His thoughtfully composed, exquisite music has gotten me through hard times, inspired and soothed me. Beyond mere auditory pleasure, though, his virtuous character shines through everything he touches. For example, this series he did on the Enneagram shows the tremendous amount of effort he puts in to empathizing with the human experience, taking perspectives and telling stories through sound. As an Enneagram One myself - as I discussed with Kim O in episode 80 - it's crucial to my own mental health that I surround myself with examples of virtuous character, good deeds, exquisitely crafted art, and things just generally being done really well. It helps me feel less alone in the universe, less uniquely burdened with the impossible task of bringing out the best in everyone and everything. Ryan is one of those people who seems to be well along his path of self-actualization, who strives to manifest his character and virtue through everything he touches. It seems clear that he is a well-rounded person, a loving husband, father, and friend to many. His music is heartfelt, therapeutic, soulful, and deeply empathic. May this song touch your heart as it touches mine, and bring comfort to the darkness of the winter season. What I mean when I say I'm an enneagram 5 with a 4 wing (5w4): revisiting the foundational conceptual frame for this podcast. The episode ends with the full song “Five” by Sleeping At Last (with a run time 5:55, of course). Tendencies include: Hoarding ideas, dreams, favors, credits, intellectual resources and physical materials for just-in-case use in the future. Hiding my vulnerability and retreating into an appropriate social role, especially when I sense meaningful connection isn't available. Straight up dissociating. This can take several different forms. Sometimes shutting down and going numb and coming back to my experiencing self later. Getting hung up on details; sometimes not being able to move forward or take a stance if I feel I don't have a super solid foundation of understanding of something. Feeling deeply and only finding language for those feelings later, sometimes much much later and the words still feel inadequate. More in the next episode.

As the Gospel expanded to the world, there were many people who still wanted it's advance and it's ambassadors to be stopped. During the first Passover after Jesus went back to heaven, James was killed and Peter arrested. But the night before he was to be martyred, Peter was sleeping in his cell, surrounded by guards in an impossible situation. Rather than fear and doubt in the Lord's provision, he has calm confidence in the Lord's plan and purposes. The Lord's deliverance of Peter reminds us that having a strong, secure trust in the Lord's faithfulness is always the best way to live.  Video of this service is also available:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fclOm7KxvzY

Meet the Host….Dr. Bruce Stevens and Rene Ribley-Stevens :Bruce has been a chiropractor in practice since 1993. He became certified Crossfit level 1 and 2 coach and certified also as a Crossfit kids trainer in 2013. Rene's background is in Chiropractic as well, coming from a family of Chiropractors, she was raised with the understanding that the body has the amazing power to heal and self regulate and that health is actually a natural state of being. They both have a love and passion for health and fitness.  Our view and how Bruce has always practiced revolves around the fact that we all have an innate, God given ability to heal and become healthier. Rene has never had to take any prescription drugs throughout her life. We have raised both our children with the same understanding and way of living.  Our daughter Jade is a chiropractor in Naples, FL.  Our  son KC is is going to school to get a bachelors degree in exercise science and his doctorate in chiropractic.   Our children are one of our greatest gifts.   We have been married since 1994.  We found our way through business success, struggles and failures, family challenges and personal hurdles. It seems that many things can change in life, and what we found is that even though the scenery changed, we were still here, together to  share thoughts, opinions and discoveries with each other.   We are committed to growth and self improvement. We regularly realize we don't have answers of many questions that life brings about, and we try to figure it out together.  Rene  became a certified life coaching in 2011.  She also did a nutritional certification in 2012. She LOVES helping individuals  feel, see and know a simple and yet powerful truth:  Who they are MATTERS!The desire to learn more and also help others along the way, like we have been helped, and to feed our creative side, is where the idea of creating our own podcast came from.It is not a preachy, couples “we have it figured out” thing. Almost the opposite. We are still on our journey, but we are together. Still here, and we hope you come along on the journey with us!Ending Song: Jason Delaney'Chasing Cars' by Snow Patrol but based on the amazing cover by Sleeping At Last - for Solo Guitar & Synthesizer.

We definitely do that (and in the process, end up brainstorming a general idea for our own concept album that we'll be writing over the next few months), but we also end up taking a listener question and ranting about random topics that have nothing to do with Halloween or anything else. We hope you enjoy! We are back after our long hiatus, fully recovered from the busyness of the last month and ready to record more episodes! Today we have a guest back on the show after a long crop of episodes with just the Powers brothers--Hannah Laatsch is back, just in time for us to send her off to college. Today we talk about music once again, another song review episode, this time dealing with songs about transitions. The first song we review, Caleb's pick, is "Hourglass" by Sleeping At Last, which is about the transition you make when someone you love passes on. How do you deal with death? How is anything ever the same? Connor's song is Rise Against's "This Is Letting Go", which talks about the transition of letting go of a relationship. The difference between trying to solve something and just being okay with what has transpired. Last, but certainly not least, is Hannah's song "Hopeless Wanderer" by Mumford & Sons. Hopeless Wanderer is about someone who leaves home and tries to discover who they are, which is one of the biggest transitions we all have to make.
