How the Bible Was Formed E4 — In the last three episodes of this short series, we focused on the formation of the Hebrew Bible, or the Old Testament. We also talked about other works of literature from the Second Temple period, known collectively as the Deuterocanon or Apocrypha. Today, we'll finally explore yet another collection of Second Temple literature that was formed around the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus—the New Testament. In this episode, Jon and Tim look at the people in the early Jesus movement who wrote, collected, and distributed these biographies about Jesus and letters to churches across the Roman Empire.CHAPTERSThe Fulfillment of the Hebrew Scriptures (0:00-13:51)What the Gospels Are and How They Came to Be (13:51-25:42)The Crew Who Shaped the New Testament (25:42-47:19)The Letters That Lasted (47:19-52:35)Sacred Scribal Abbreviations (52:35-1:05:01)Conclusion to Series (1:05:01-1:08:15)OFFICIAL EPISODE TRANSCRIPTView this episode's official transcript.REFERENCED RESOURCESThe DidacheJesus and the Eyewitnesses: The Gospels as Eyewitness Testimony by Richard BauckhamThe Formation and Significance of the Christian Biblical Canon: A Study in Text, Ritual and Interpretation by Tomas BokedalCheck out the The Deuterocanon / Apocrypha video series. You can view annotations for this episode—plus our entire library of videos, podcasts, articles, and classes—in the BibleProject app, available for Android and iOS.Check out Tim's extensive collection of recommended books here.SHOW MUSIC“at the pictures” by Lofi Sunday, Cassidy Godwin “little adventures” by Lofi Sunday, Cassidy Godwin “Church Pew ft. In this episode, Eli is joined by Lydia McGrew to discuss the evidence for the Gospels. (Disclaimer): Lydia McGrew does not hold to the "Inerrancy of the Bible." I strongly disagree with her here and believe that scriptural inerrancy is a vital issue. Nevertheless, the evidence presented here can be utilized by proponents of biblical inerrancy and is therefore, still very valuable information. While Lydia and I have some important differences and disagreements, this was a very enjoyable and informative discussion, and I am grateful that she made the time to come on and speak with me.

In this midweek podcast episode, Frank tackles three more BIG questions from our listening audience along with question like:What are the 3 levels of fine-tuning and does it only occur here on planet Earth? Can the fine-tuning argument alone actually prove Christianity is true? Do most Christians have the wrong definition of inerrancy? You may have noticed some pretty significant discrepancies between the different Gospel accounts in the New Testament—discrepancies that skeptic Bart Ehrman didn't hesitate to point out during past debates with Dr. William Lane Craig, Jimmy Akin, AND today's guest! Is there a way for Bible-believing Christians to harmonize these variations, or should we throw out the concept of Bible inerrancy altogether? This week, author, Christian apologist, and New Testament scholar Dr. Mike Licona sits down with Frank to expose the truth about "errors" in the Bible, specifically tackling some of Bart Ehrman's objections to the reliability of the New Testament. He'll also discuss the release of his new book, 'Jesus, Contradicted: Why the Gospels Tell the Same Story Differently', which is a resource aimed to help Christians navigate through textual variances. During the episode, Frank and Mike will answer questions like:What is the true meaning of divine inspiration? What is the Chicago Statement of Inerrancy, and what are some of its shortcomings?Did God dictate to the Gospel authors? Are there errors in the original Bible manuscripts? What is literary spotlighting, and how does it apply to the Resurrection narratives?Buckle your seatbelts, friends, because this podcast episode is likely going to make you uncomfortable by challenging much of what you've been taught (or assumed) about biblical inerrancy. Is it okay that the Bible doesn't have camera-like accuracy in some places? Listen as Dr. Licona helps us to take a fresh look at the doctrine of inerrancy and then decide for ourselves. Many modern Christians view the Bible as the inspired, inerrant word of God. Is that what its own authors thought? Did the author of Matthew, for example, think the Gospel of Mark was infallible? If so, why did he change it? In this episode we look at the views of the Gospel writers about the inerrancy of other Gospels -- even those also found in the New Testament.

The doctrine of inerrancy appears as a key foundation supporting high-control religion's house of cards. When that foundation is removed, that house collapses, paving the way for communities where disagreement and dissent are affirmed as valuable faith dimensions. Inerrancy is bad theology, and like all bad theology, it has the potential to hurt people. Check out this week's episode to learn more. Today we're joined by pediatric ER doctor and founder of Living with Power Ministries Dr. Lina AbuJamra to discuss her book, "Don't Tell Anyone You're Reading This: A Christian Doctor's Thoughts on Sex, Shame, and Other Troublesome Issues." We start off with Lina's story of growing up in Lebanon, going to medical school, and her faith journey. She shares how her upbringing shaped her perspective on dating and how a relationship she had placed hope in didn't work out, leading her to feel betrayed by God. We discuss how she fell into the prosperity gospel of sex and marriage and how God redeemed this. Then, did purity culture fail the church? And what does it mean to walk in sexual purity and holiness, whether you're single, married, or engaged? We talk about the shame and stigma or purity and virginity even within the evangelical world and explain why it's more important than ever in our hypersexualized culture to understand that Jesus is worth facing these issues straight on. --- Timecodes: (02:13) Growing up in Lebanon & moving to the U.S. (15:23) Deconstruction / prosperity gospel (18:59) Purity culture (26:15) 'Old Testament God' & laws (29:25) 'Worse' sexual sins (38:00) Inerrancy of scripture (41:41) Christian leaders' sexual failures / Gen X leaders (56:20) Same sex-attraction (01:03:00) Response to sexual sin --- Today's Sponsors: Good Ranchers — get 10% OFF your box today at GoodRanchers.com – make sure to use code 'ALLIE' when you subscribe.
