In this week's podcast, Jon and Karen talk about how all those training treats could be making your dog fat. Plus, Karen interviews TV vet Emma Milne.  It's not good for your dog to be overweight. Still, treats are an invaluable part of regular training exercises as they are an excellent way of marking good behaviour. The important thing, as Jon and Karen discuss, is to make sure that you take their calorific content into account alongside your dog's overall daily intake of food.  Karen also had the chance to talk to TV vet Emma Milne about her work.  Emma, for listeners outside the UK, is a veterinarian, author and appeared in 11 series of Vets in Practice on British television.  Find out more about Emma on this week's show or visit her website.

Dogs and Firework Fear - free help This special edition podcast was sponsored by Dorwest Herbs - www.dorwest.com - the natural way to calm your cat and dog Recorded October 26, 2011 It's that time of year where we remember the Gunpowder plot and burn an effigy of the fellow who started it all... what a lovely anniversary! Rather gruesome if you think about it. But actually there are fewer and fewer bonfires and 'Penny for the Guy' (Guy Fawkes : the naughty man who started all the treason palaver in the first place). And we are seeing more and more and MORE of the fireworks part of the celebrations here in the UK. We are of course looking towards New Years Eve as well, Christmas seems to also involve fireworks, as do weddings, and yes, even funerals (going off with a bang, as they say) But what about our poor old dogs in all of this? They must think they are going insane with all the flashes, bangs and whizzes going on. Not good at all. Time for us to take things in hand and paw, and let's help our dogs deal with firework fear! August 2, 2011 Many years ago a revolution was declared in the dog world. 'The Culture Clash', by Jean Donaldson, spoke out in favour of dogs as adaptable, and yes - perfectly normal, not the misfits we were led to believe they were. Just because dogs bark and chew, sniff and dig, doesn't mean they should be given a bad name. Jean's name has always been synonymous with the best and most practical advice on all things dog-related. Common-sense and understanding Nowadays this attitude is still as fresh as ever, and I asked Jean about her views on dog training, what makes a dog dangerous, why training with food is not the devil's work, and how we can make dog ownership as easy as teaching a down stay...
