Chapter 5: Special Occasion The restaurant was far too nice. Hermione felt underdressed just standing on the sidewalk. Draco's hand on her back guided her inside, and she shifted from foot to foot as he spoke lowly with the maître d'. Within moments they were being led to a table near a window, and she felt every eye on them on the long walk. She'd suggested going to a Muggle restaurant, but he insisted. He already had a place in mind. The menu was decadent. The wine list extensive. But she and Draco hadn't spoken a word to each other since they left her flat. And maybe they were no good at this. Maybe they should stick to sex. Maybe the only meals they should share were lunch in his office as they redressed— "Are we celebrating anything tonight? Any champagne?" the server asked. Draco looked at her from over the top of the menu. His eyes were a pale grey, flickering over her anxiously. She turned her face up to the server to decline, and Draco replied, "Yes, thank you." He met her eyes. "First date." She felt her cheeks heat as the server offered his congratulations and well wishes. Biting her lip, she looked back to the menu, focusing on how the phrase "first date" made her feel. Like a promise of many more to come.

Down in the eighth of the evil pouches (the malebolge) that make up the giant circle of fraud in INFERNO, Guido da Montefeltro has told the (self-justifying) tale of his life. And now comes the struggle at his death, a fight between Saint Francis and a black Cherub from hell. Join me, Mark Scarbough, as we slow-walk through INFERNO, finishing up Guido's incredible monologue about his life and death. This passage has a few problems in it, not the least of which is the off-handed way Dante (or is it Guido?) mention the great Saint Francis. Here are the segments of this episode of WALKING WITH DANTE: [01:23] My English translation of INFERNO, Canto XXVII, lines 112 - 136. If you'd like to read along or drop a comment about this episode, please see the page on my website, walkingwithdante.com. [03:34] The quick shift from Guido's life to his death. [04:38] Two small problems at the front of this passage: a black Cherub and the name of the sin for this evil pouch. [06:19] What is fraudulent counsel? [08:03] The problem of the off-handed reference to Saint Francis. [11:28] Conversion demands a "before" and an "after"--that is, a linear story, which Guido's is not. [13:07] The demonic/Scholastic joke in the passage. [13:45] One last link between Dante the pilgrim and Guido da Montefeltro. [15:17] The journey to Minos (and maybe some meta-literary joking around, too). [16:55] Biting yourself in rage: repetition as one of Dante's key literary devices. [18:07] Guido's final words--and his humanity. [21:04] Guido's eternal mutterings. [22:37] A final textual difficulty to round out Inferno, Canto XXVII. [25:35] A final reading of Guido's entire monologue: Inferno, Canto XXVII, lines 58 - 136.

”Eating animals is biting us back”: News Coverage of Pandemic Prevention to Reduce Future Zoonotic Diseases

Is the news helping us prevent future zoonotic disease pandemics by facilitating needed policy changes in animal and eco protection (namely the wildlife trade/hunting and agribusiness)? In Tune to Nature radio host and researcher Dr. Carrie Freeman, a professor of communication, shares her recent study in this 31-minute podcast analyzing the pandemic prevention solutions covered in the last 2.5 years of global news coverage of zoonotic disease and its relationship to meat (from wild animals hunted or domesticated animals farmed). She discusses findings and interesting quotes from the news stories and her recommendations of how the news media could cover this topic further (it dropped off the radar since spring of 2020) and help urge societies to curb risks they know are catalysts for pandemics (deforestation, hunting, farming, and trading in animal bodies), and cover solutions such as fostering plant-based foods as replacements and new livelihood practices for those affected by needed changes to business as usual with animals. Experts predict it's not a matter of if but when we get hit with another pandemic that likely could be deadlier than covid (such as avian influenza/ bird flu). What have we changed in our interactions with other animal species and nature to prevent this?  For more information, check out an interesting documentary on this topic: End of Medicine.  In Tune to Nature is a weekly show airing on Wednesdays from 6:30-7pm EST on Atlanta indie station WRFG (Radio Free Georgia) 89.3FM hosted by Carrie Freeman, Sonia Swartz, or Melody Paris. Visit us at shapedbydog.com    Do you have superstitious behavior like wearing a lucky shirt or lucky socks? Dogs can have superstitious behaviors too, and often, we contribute! We don't want inadvertent or cheap behaviors to become part of what our dogs learn, so I'm covering what to look for and what you can do to avoid reinforcing superstition unintentionally. We're also looking at why you need to beware of the killer bees in dog training!   In the episode you'll hear:   • How B. F. Skinner described superstitious behavior back in the 1940's when working with pigeons. • That my mentor Bob Bailey used the term cheap behavior and what that looks like for dogs. • How my husband, John, had a superstitious behaviour at traffic lights. • The ways dogs can develop superstitious behaviors in daily life and dog sports. • How cheap behaviors like vocalizing, pawing, spinning, foot paddling, nipping, and the killer bees like biting, bopping, bouncing, boxing and more can be built into our training or routines. • About preventing cheap behavior or superstition in your dog training and why to look at reinforcement. • That reinforcement can be more complex than what you think you are rewarding. • How some behaviors can be because the dog is overwhelmed or over faced in training and why to look at your dog's success percentage. • Why to work out your dog's rate of reinforcement and how that can vary depending on what you are training. • About the importance of a training plan that will set you and your dog up for success. • How to help your dog with something like barking in the crate if that is superstitious. This episode I describe the neural mechanisms that activate and control aggressive states and beahviors and the role of hormones—estrogen and testosterone—in mediating violent and and/or competive aggression. I also describe tools that can be used to modulate the factors that have been shown to ‘prime' an individual for aggression, including sunlight, estrogen sensitivity, competition within social settings, and overall stress levels, and the hormone cortisol. I discuss how substances such as caffeine and alcohol can impact impulsive behaviors, and how nutrition and supplementation can be used to regulate mood and aggression.  Thank you to our sponsors AG1 (Athletic Greens): https://athleticgreens.com/huberman ROKA: https://www.roka.com -- code: huberman Helix Sleep: https://www.helixsleep.com/huberman See Andrew Huberman Live: The Brain Body Contract https://hubermanlab.com/tour Our Patreon page https://www.patreon.com/andrewhuberman Supplements from Momentous https://www.livemomentous.com/huberman. Running a marathon, writing a book, or learning piano. These are big undertakings that require discipline and practice. The harder we work each day, the faster we'll succeed, right? Wrong, say authors and podcasters Jami and Jeffery Downs. Biting off more than our daily chew can lead to a cycle of discouragement. Instead, commit to laughably small steps: Write one sentence a day. Practice for five minutes. These micro goals are much easier to sustain, and when you keep the streak going, you'll find that sentences turn into pages, and minutes turn into skills. A revelation in their personal lives lead this husband and wife team to develop "Streaking," a philosophy of personal accountability that applies to anything: Learning, personal relationships, and health. Jami and Jeffery speak with Whitney about the myths of habit forming, and why some tasks — no matter how often you repeat them — will never become automatic.
