Too many veterans make the mistake of dragging every military habit, mindset, and experience into civilian life, expecting the world to adapt to them. That's unrealistic, and it leads to frustration and irrelevance. The hard truth is, you must aggressively shed the skills and attitudes that no longer serve you as a citizen. Stop clinging to the notion that your past rank entitles you to anything now. Instead, ruthlessly identify which of your skills and experiences — leadership, adaptability, problem-solving, teamwork — are truly valuable and relevant to new operating environment. Translate your experience into language and actions that matter in your workplace, your community, and your family. Don't expect others to understand or care about your service unless you show them its value through meaningful contribution, not nostalgia or entitlement. Here's the line in the sand: civilians consume; citizens contribute. You are not here to take up space, reminisce about the “good old days,” or demand respect for what you did. We are here to make the world around us better. If you want your next chapter to be as meaningful as your service, you must transform, not just transition. In episode 76 of the Medical Nursing Podcast, we're chatting all about something that honestly baffled me when I was working in general practice (and in my very early referral nursing days), and that's chylothorax. As far as I was concerned back in 2015, before I lived and breathed medicine, a chylothorax would have been just another patient needing a thoracocentesis.  I didn't understand what was causing the disease or its impact on the patient. And aside from them being a respiratory patient and needing monitoring, I had NO idea what nursing actions I could take to make things better - I didn't really know how to help.  But when I started learning what a chylothorax was, why it happens, and what we can do to help these patients? That's when I stopped feeling out of my depth, and realised that I CAN make decisions as a vet nurse, and my actions WILL help my patients. So in this episode, I want to share the three essential things you NEED to know about chylothorax - and more importantly, how to turn that knowledge into nursing care that really helps your patient. So next time you're handed a patient with chylothorax, you'll know exactly what to watch out for and exactly how to help them. --- Resources mentioned in this episode:

The Call of Duty Endowment stands apart in the veteran employment space by deploying an aggressive, business-driven system to vet, coach, and hold accountable the non-profits it funds to ensure only the highest-performing organizations are available to junior enlisted veterans seeking meaningful careers. With over 44,000 veteran-serving organizations in the U.S. alone, the Endowment's Seal of Distinction is earned through a rigorous, data-driven process: applicants must prove, with hard numbers, their effectiveness in placing veterans into high-quality jobs, their cost efficiency, and their organizational integrity. This isn't a one-time check. CODE — in partnership with Deloitte — conducts ongoing audits and only those who consistently deliver results receive continued funding and support. If a grantee fails to meet placement or quality targets, they're coached intensively; if they still fall short, CODE moves on, scaling up only those partners who prove their impact year after year. For transitioning veterans, especially junior enlisted, this relentless vetting and accountability means you never have to navigate the chaos of career transition alone or risk wasting time with underperforming organizations. Don't get lost in a sea of 40,000 choices or settle for generic advice: the Call of Duty Endowment has already done the hard work of finding, funding, and improving the best. You owe it to yourself to leverage these resources because your service deserves more than a transition, it deserves a launchpad to a truly meaningful civilian career. Logan Leslie is the Founder and CEO of Main Street Auto, a fast-growing network of tire and auto repair shops across the United States. After serving over eight years in the military, Logan pursued a joint law and business degree, which laid the foundation for his entrepreneurial ventures. He launched Main Street Auto in 2021, starting with a single location and scaling to nearly 100 shops in under four years. Logan is also a passionate advocate for hiring veterans, building culture, and redefining leadership in the blue-collar business world. In this episode… The tire and auto repair industry is evolving rapidly as new players apply business and acquisition strategies once reserved for tech startups. Yet, scaling in this space demands deep respect for shop culture, community ties, and the legacy of independent owners. How can business leaders grow without losing the heart of what makes local shops special? According to Logan Leslie of Main Street Auto, it starts with humility, intentional leadership, and honoring the legacy of every shop acquired. By targeting well-run businesses just outside of urban cores and retaining what's already working, Main Street Auto has managed to grow without compromising quality or community connections. Logan also emphasizes the importance of hiring veterans and trusting your instincts when it comes to leadership and talent. On this episode of Gain Traction, Mike Edge welcomes Logan for a conversation about entrepreneurship, buying and scaling auto shops, hiring veterans, and leading with culture. Logan shares the lessons he's learned from the military, past business failures, and how he grew his company from one location to nearly 100 in under four years. He also discusses the unique challenges of maintaining operational excellence during rapid expansion and building a mission-driven team from the ground up. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn:  [02:28] How military service influenced Logan Leslie's entrepreneurial mindset [05:15] Why Logan built his own company instead of joining someone else's [07:44] Avoiding culture loss while growing rapidly [10:01] The strategy behind selecting shop locations for acquisition [11:57] What should shop owners prepare if they're considering selling? [13:46] Why shop owner involvement can hurt valuations and how to fix it [18:15] How Logan evaluates non-traditional candidates for corporate roles [25:35] The role of failure in entrepreneurial success Resources mentioned in this episode: Logan Leslie on LinkedIn  Main Street Auto  Veteran's Trust  The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work And What To Do About It by Michael Gerber SEMA Mike Edge on LinkedIn Tread Partners Quotable Moments:  “Entrepreneurship is never easy, but building something from scratch lets you shape the culture.” “Veterans often leave the service with incredible leadership skills that don't show up on a resumé.” “Our goal isn't to change what works — it's to support and scale it.” “Failure is a great teacher; if you're not failing, you're not moving fast enough.” “Every vehicle on the road could be one of our customers — that's a sacred responsibility.” Action Steps:  Preserve shop culture post-acquisition: Retain what makes each auto shop special when integrating into a larger company. Hire veterans into leadership roles: Don't just look at resumes — look for character, responsibility, and service-driven leadership. Vet potential buyers as partners: Shop owners should develop general managers and build independence before selling. Use SBA loans for smart growth: Leverage government financing to acquire your first or next business. Define your failure threshold: Accept and quantify risk as a natural part of scaling and entrepreneurship. Sponsor for this episode... Howdy and so long! We hate to say it, but season 3 is about to be in the rearview mirror. Wow. 3 Seasons. It's incredibly humbling to have been able to make it this far, so let me start off by speaking for both Idiots when I say thank you, thank you, thank you for supporting us then, now, and in the future.  As has become a tradition, we like to end or begin seasons with more lighthearted things, and we brought back Dr. Dean Scott for this season closer, and he bookends the season nicely. We talk all sorts of fictional creatures, some from books suggested to us by the Brain Witch Idiot, and some from Dean's books. These include dragons and griffins from the Empyrian Series (for the love of god, Rebecca Yarros, please don't sue me) and the Harry Potter series (for the love of god, JK Rowling, please learn about love) and critters from Scott's book series "The Dragon Vet" and "The Half-Life of Grief". Everything Scott writes is amazing, please, check him out, but check out our second conversation with him. Then, inbetween waiting for next season to drop and re-listening to our entire back log and listening to Cory Johnson and the Broken Nightscape's musical breadth, you can read his many books. You can find the Common Idiot's music on any streaming service. You can also hear a song written and performed in about an hour (without the studio, so the quality isn't great, but it's an homage to you!) at the end of this episode, which may or may not eventually be on all streaming services, with the rest of my music. Also, still planning on a full album out soon. Still so excited. While I'm stealing the spotlight and being selfish for a second, I do want to take a moment to be vulnerable. I have a bit of a...stomach issue. The doctors are still working on figuring out what it is exactly. Don't worry, this isn't a "I have 3 months to live" message, but it's still important to be open. The best guess is GERD, but it presents in a lot of different ways. There are some other health complications that might be along side and either exacerbating the problem, or being a menace of its own. Unsure, and unclear. The worst part, from a performer's standpoint, is I sometimes have difficulty swallowing, and I'm quite literally unable to do anything until it passes. So, if you've heard times where it sounds like I'm letting out a big sigh of disinterest, it is because I'm finally drawing my first breath in 30 seconds, or have moments where I pause for a long time between words, same thing. Adding to this is I have a tic in my face that sort of comes and goes, and I think sometimes these two problems love to tag team me into submission. It honestly has affected my confidence, but that's a whole different thing. The problem manifests itself, too, with a lot of burping, or even just throat sound from my esophogus doing...idk, bullshit things. I normally edit it all out, but it's often extremely time consuming. I did not do that in this one, and it can be heard. I apologize if it sickens you. I'm not a fan of the sound, hopefully everything else distracts nicely. There have been a few other episodes where it was there and I either missed them in editing, or ran out of time and had to leave them. I shied away, I'm not anymore. Also, I'm seeking treatment, trying to fix it, and hopefully it will never be a problem in the future.  A note about Kent. I want to take a second to just thank my best friend on this whole fucking planet for being with me in this. He could have picked a lot more qualified people to run this with, he chose me. He does tend to make poor life choices. Anyway, I love you, brother. Episode 148 features Michael “Rod” Rodriguez, CEO of the Global War on Terrorism Memorial Foundation. We dive headlong into the tangled realities of the GWOT, refusing to shy away from its complexities or the ways participation in such a conflict can both expand and restrict one's worldview. He lays bare the war's multidimensional nature which spans continents, cultures, and generations and challenges listeners to confront the uncomfortable truth that even those who lived it can struggle to define or fully understand it. Rodriguez insists on telling the whole story, not just of soldiers in uniform, but also the intelligence officers, contractors, and families whose sacrifices are often overlooked. He makes it clear: the GWOT is not a series of isolated battles, but a single, ongoing, global campaign that demands a new kind of national reflection and commemoration. The episode is a masterclass in how one career can prepare you for another. Rod draws a direct line from his experience as a Green Beret, where learning to communicate across cultures and lead diverse teams prepared him for his current mission: navigating the labyrinth of congressional politics and federal bureaucracy to build a national memorial. He is blunt about the emotional toll and the necessity of vulnerability, arguing that only by embracing the full weight of these experiences can we hope to create something lasting and true. Listeners are pushed to reconsider their assumptions, to recognize that service comes in many forms, and to see that the skills honed in service are not just transferable, but essential for tackling the next great challenge. Veteran Made

Episode 147 features Mary Kreis and is the last in our series featuring Team RWB and the Old Glory Ultra Relay. This was not just another endurance event—it was a bold, uncompromising statement about what it truly means to represent the entire veteran population. Team RWB's selection of its 12-person relay team was not about assembling the fastest or youngest athletes, but about building a group that embodies the full spectrum of the veteran community: different ages, backgrounds, service branches, and running abilities. This was vital. Veterans across America are not a monolith—they are men and women in their 20s and their 90s, combat-wounded warriors and those who found purpose after service, elite athletes and those rediscovering fitness after injury or struggle. By fielding a team that mirrors this diversity, Team RWB sends a powerful message: every veteran matters, every story counts, and the journey to health and belonging is for all—not just a select few. The Old Glory Ultra Relay was a world-record-setting, 3,000-mile gauntlet, but its real impact lies in how it unites veterans of every age and ability into one unstoppable force, proving that resilience is not limited by age or speed. This team is a living, breathing cross-section of the veteran population, showing America that strength comes in many forms. If you care about honoring service, you cannot settle for token representation or surface-level diversity. It is essential to ensure that events like the Old Glory Ultra Relay reflect the entire veteran community. Anything less is a disservice to the millions who have served and continue to seek purpose, connection, and wellness in civilian life. Let this episode challenge you: who is missing from your team, your event, your story? Representation isn't a box to check — it's the foundation of real impact. Vet Med For Idiots By Idiots

Welcome back to another riveting episode where the boys inevitably get distracted and go on tangents. However, along the way, the Idiots talk noses. You know, snoots, boopers, snozzes, sniffers, cold wet presses...the list goes on. Learn about some of the super amazing functions of the nose, why they're better with theirs than you'll ever be with yours, and imagine being able to see the world by scent. Also, there were supposed to be some links for references, but you'll have to google that yourself because Cory lost the list and doesn't feel like hearing Kent complain. Again. So, the research is from blubity bloo. Trust me, that will make sense in the context of the episode. Also, if you listen closely, you can hear the cameo of multiple birds on the window bird feeder adding their two cents to the conversation. No one asked, though. Very pushy, insistant, really.

Veteran Made

In this episode, the reality of teamwork in Team RWB's Old Glory Ultra Relay is laid bare: this is not a challenge that anyone could possibly conquer alone. The logistics, physical demands, and relentless pace of a transcontinental relay require more than just individual grit—they demand a level of coordination, trust, and mutual support that only a true team can provide. Every runner, from the seasoned ultra veterans to those newer to the scene, must constantly communicate, adapt, and strategize together. Decisions about pacing, shift rotations, and even how to handle injuries or setbacks are made collectively, not in isolation. The episode makes it clear: one person's miscalculation or overexertion can jeopardize the entire team's success, and the only way forward is through unwavering collaboration and shared responsibility. Josh Kraus challenges listeners to abandon the myth of the solo hero. The Old Glory Ultra Relay is a crucible where egos are checked, and the focus shifts to the group's survival and triumph. The team's ability to pivot strategies based on terrain, weather, and the unpredictable toll on each runner's body is a testament to the necessity of collective intelligence and adaptability. Crew chiefs, support staff, and runners all play indispensable roles—no one is expendable, and no single person can carry the flag across the country alone. If you think you understand endurance, think again: this episode will force you to confront the hard truth that, in an event of this scale, individual achievement is meaningless without the power of the team. Step up, listen in, and be prepared to rethink everything you thought you knew about what it takes to accomplish something truly epic. Send us a textOn this episode of Speaking of … College of Charleston, Mark Del Mastro, Associate Provost for Academic and International Programs, and Chris Korey, Associate Provost for Student Success, talk about launching their new podcast, Faculty Off the Clock. This podcast takes you beyond the classroom to reveal the hidden lives of College of Charleston faculty. From woodworking enthusiasts to barbershop quartet singers, you'll meet professors with fascinating passions and stories that go far beyond academia. Korey and Del Mastro hope these conversations will highlight not only unique interests of the guests but will function as a bridge to connect people on campus with shared interests. “Both Mark and I were faculty members at one point, and most of your identity on campus is sort of tied up into what your scholarship is and teaching and you very rarely have opportunities to talk about what you do outside of that,” says Korey. “So we wanted to create a venue where people have the opportunity to talk about those things because it doesn't normally come up in our work environments.”Humor is a big part of their collaboration and Del Mastro and Korey make a habit of asking their guests a series of lightening round questions on topics from hot dogs vs. hamburgers to celebrity crushes. They also make it a point to ask guests about whether they like popcorn, which is a shared love and an ongoing joke between the hosts, and it gives them an opportunity to share their love of the Whirley Pop stove-pop popper. They end the episode by presenting guests with a customized bobblehead doll. “The whole purpose of the podcast is to show the lighter side of the faculty member and what better characterizes the lighter side of someone than a bobblehead?” says Del Mastro. Featured on this episode:Mark Del MastroAs Associate Provost for Academic and International Programs, Mark P. Del Mastro, Professor of Spanish/Hispanic Studies, provides leadership and support in the area of curriculum development and review and academic policy. He also oversees the Center for International Education, the Office of the Registrar, and the Office for Institutional Effectiveness.Born in Bowling Green, Kentucky and raised in northern New Jersey, Del Mastro earned his B.A. at Wake Forest University, his M.A. at Middlebury College, and his Ph.D. at the University of Virginia. After defending his doctoral dissertation in August 1992, “Dr. D” relocated to Charleston, South Carolina to begin a career at The Citadel, where for 18 years he taught a variety of courses to include Spanish language and literature, and Hispanic culture and business. After serving four years as Head of The Citadel's Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures, in July 2010 Del Mastro joined the College of Charleston where he served as Chair of the Department of Hispanic Studies until August 2019 when he transitioned to his current role as Associate Provost for Academic and International Programs in the Office of the Provost and Academic Affairs.Chris KoreyAs Associate Provost for Student Success, Christopher Korey, Professor of Biology, leads the Office for the Academic Experience, which provides students with educationally purposeful activities that lead to deep learning, integrated social and intellectual development, and engagement with local and global communities.
