EP 675: Cal Arnold  Alright, so this episode is one I’ve been looking forward to for a while. Cal Arnold is the real deal—a guy who’s built an incredible business, survived a plane crash that should’ve killed him, and came out the other side with a perspective that’ll make you rethink everything. We dive deep into entrepreneurship, the trades, building BTI Log Home Care from nothing, and what it actually takes to become your best self. Cal’s story is wild—from buying his first business for $35k with no money, to crashing his plane into a power line and spending months in a wheelchair, to building a multi-million dollar company while learning to walk again. But this isn’t just another success story. We get into the hard stuff: gratitude when life kicks your teeth in, why busy is lazy, the difference between speed and velocity, and how to actually focus when everything’s pulling you in different directions. If you’re an entrepreneur, a DIY hunter, or just someone trying to figure out how to live life on your terms, this one’s for you. Cal doesn’t sugarcoat anything, and honestly, I needed to hear a lot of what he shared this week. Let’s get into it. OnX Hunt – The ultimate tool for elk hunters and the app I absolutely won’t go into the field without. Whether you’re e-scouting from the couch or actually hunting elk, OnX gives you detailed maps, property boundaries, and over 50 layers of mapping data including satellite imagery, offline maps, and waypoints. It helps you make smarter decisions no matter where you hunt. Save time, avoid mistakes, and stay connected to your crew. If you’re not an Elite member yet, you’re missing out on a whole other level of tools. Head over to onxmaps.com and use code TRO to save 20% off your membership. Tricer – These guys make gear that’s fast, light, and simple. From bomber tripods to spotting scope mounts, panheads, truck mounts, and now even bipods—Tricer makes gear that just works. I’ve been running their bipod hard this season and it’s been rock solid. If you’re looking to upgrade your glassing system, check out Tricer. Head over to tricer.com, use code TRO at checkout, and save yourself 10%. TIMESTAMPS 0:00 – Intro & Bridger Watch Announcement 6:15 – Meeting Cal Arnold & First Impressions 8:30 – Were You Always an Entrepreneur? 12:45 – The First Car & Learning to Hustle 16:20 – College Dropout to Ski Bum 19:40 – Buying the Soda Blasting Business 24:10 – Pawn Shop Financing & Early Struggles 28:35 – The Big Break & Building BTI Log Home Care 33:20 – The “Aha Moment” in Business 36:50 – The Contractor Doom Loop 41:15 – Why Most Tradespeople Shouldn’t Start Businesses 45:30 – Falling in Love with Business, Not the Trade 48:00 – COVID as a Dragon to Slay 51:45 – The Plane Crash Story Begins 56:20 – January 2nd, 2019 – The Day Everything Changed 1:01:30 – Waking Up in the Hospital 1:04:15 – The Power of Gratitude in the Wheelchair 1:08:40 – Choosing to Amputate & Keeping Your Foot 1:11:25 – Would You Go Back and Change It? 1:14:50 – Seasons of Life & Hunting Philosophy 1:19:30 – The Gratitude Muscle & Journaling 1:26:45 – Recognizing Gain vs. Chasing the Gap 1:31:20 – Removing Resistance & What Focus Really Means 1:38:15 – Busy is Lazy 1:42:30 – Speed vs. Velocity 1:46:50 – Efficiency vs. Effectiveness 1:50:00 – Writing a Book Someday? 1:52:15 – Outro THREE KEY TAKEAWAYS Gratitude is a Muscle You Must Exercise – Cal’s plane crash forced him into a wheelchair for months, but instead of falling into victimhood, he committed to writing down three things he was grateful for every day. This simple practice became the foundation for his recovery and business growth. You don’t need a wheelchair to start practicing gratitude—just 10 minutes and a journal. The discipline of recognizing what you have, rather than obsessing over what you don’t, is what separates those who thrive from those who survive. Focus Means Saying No, Not Thinking Harder – We hear “focus” all the time, but Cal breaks down what it actually means: saying no to everything that doesn’t serve your one primary goal. It’s not about grinding harder or being “busy”—busy is lazy. It’s about ruthlessly eliminating distractions and resistance. Most of us are driving with the gas and brake pedal pressed at the same time. Real progress happens when you take your foot off the brake by cutting out the things that don’t matter, even if they feel productive. Fall in Love with the Process, Not the Destination – If your only measure of success is the end result—whether that’s a dead bull, a business milestone, or a bank account number—you’ll miss 99% of your life. Cal built BTI over 20 years by showing up every day and doing the work, not by hitting some magical finish line. The same applies to hunting: if you only win when there’s an animal on the ground, you’re robbing yourself of the experience. Success is loving the daily grind, not reaching some arbitrary destination.

It's Thursday, December 18th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Syrian Christians are suffering Christians in Syria are facing new challenges and growth. The Middle Eastern country is now ruled by a transitional government after the autocratic rule of Bashar al-Assad ended a year ago. Freedom of expression seems to be increasing; however, Christians still suffer persecution. Christian students, women, clergy, and business owners face insults and threats in public. Despite this, one pastor told Open Doors, “After all the violence in the country, some non-Christians are now more open to hear about Christianity, because they see that Christianity brings peace, and we hope that God will touch their hearts.” In John 14:27, Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” Two U.S. soldiers and U.S. civilian interpreter killed in Syria Two U.S. soldiers and a U.S. civilian interpreter were killed in an attack in Syria over the weekend. The U.S. military blamed the attack on the Islamic State group.  Hundreds of American troops are in eastern Syria as part of a coalition to fight the Islamic State. U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on X, “This was an ISIS attack against the U.S. and Syria, in a very dangerous part of Syria, that is not fully controlled by them. … There will be very serious retaliation.” Citizens in 39 countries are prohibited from traveling to U.S. On Tuesday, President Donald Trump signed a proclamation further restricting the entry of foreign nationals to the U.S.  Thirty-nine countries are now affected by U.S. travel restrictions. The proclamation added full restrictions and entry limitations on Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan, and Syria. Individuals holding Palestinian-Authority-issued travel documents also face full restrictions.  Defense bill gives 4% raise to soldiers The U.S. Senate passed the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act yesterday. The $901 billion military spending bill provides support for Europe, Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan.  The bill also gives service members a 4% raise and addresses social issues for troops. For example, the bill prohibits men, pretending to be women, from participating in women's sports programs at military academies. And the bill does not expand coverage for in vitro fertilization for military families.  The U.S. House of Representatives approved the bill last week, and President Donald Trump is expected to sign it.  Hegseth restores miliary chaplains as moral anchors U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced plans on Tuesday to restore the military chaplaincy to its full strength. Hegseth said chaplains have been minimized by secular humanism to being viewed as therapists instead of ministers. He said, “I have a directive right here that I will sign today to eliminate the use of the Army Spiritual Fitness Guide effective immediately. These types of training materials have no place in the War Department.” Hegseth added, “In well over 100 pages, it mentions God one time. “That's it. It mentions feelings 11 times. It even mentions playfulness—whatever that is—nine times. There's zero mention of virtue.” Listen to other comments from Hegseth. HEGSETH: “There will be a top down-cultural shift, putting spiritual wellbeing on the same footing as mental and physical health. As a first step toward creating a supportive environment for our warriors and their souls, we're going to restore the esteemed position of chaplains as moral anchors for our fighting force.” Will Supreme Court block church's million dollar COVID fine? A church in California is appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court in a case involving government overreach during the COVID-19 pandemic. California officials previously fined Calvary Chapel in San Jose over one million dollars. The church simply did not require members to wear masks at services during the pandemic.  Advocates for Faith & Freedom is representing the church. Erin Mersino, vice president of the group, said, “Government officials may not weaponize emergencies to suspend the First Amendment. California imposed some of the most aggressive restrictions on churches in the country, and this case is about ensuring the government never does this again.” When commanded not to preach, Peter and the apostles said in Acts 5:29, “We ought to obey God rather than men.” 234th anniversary of Bill of Rights And finally, this week is the anniversary of the U.S. Bill of Rights which comprise the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution.  The United States of America ratified the Bill of Rights on December 15, 1791, two hundred thirty-four years ago. The First Amendment famously protects freedom of religion and freedom of speech. The Second Amendment protects the individual right to keep and bear arms.  The amendments drew from English law to protect the rights of citizens and limit the power of government. Plus, they dive into GLP-1 medications like semaglutide and tirzepatide, long COVID symptom overlaps, heat intolerance, and why certain movement strategies backfire for patients with hypermobility, POTS, and other connective tissue conditions. They also trade tips on hydration, travel, pelvic support, and how to build movement back into your life, even when your nervous system fights you at every step. Takeaways: Dr. Cutchins explains how PVD impacts the whole body, causing fatigue, pelvic pain, and even mimicking other disorders. Weight loss drugs like semaglutide and tirzepatide can help, but only in the context of a larger strategy that considers joint instability, hormonal shifts, and gut function. They discuss how patients with PVD or dysautonomia are especially sensitive to warm environments and what that teaches us about blood flow and pressure regulation. From favorite exercises to subtle red flags, they explore how to reintroduce movement without triggering crashes or setbacks. Compression, salt loading, movement timing, and cooling tools can turn a nightmare trip into a manageable one. Kris is a professional FBA seller, a podcast host and an account executive at Sellozo. Kris has always been entrepreneurial and enjoyed the thrill of selling items, from selling items at garage sales as a kid to mowing yards and then selling clothes on eBay. Kris learned how to sell physical products on Amazon in 2013, starting out by selling things around the house. He learned the basics of retail arbitrage and started sourcing his own products. Kris launched his first product in 2014 after watching YouTube videos and listening to podcasts. Currently, Kris has four brands and enjoys helping other sellers on Amazon. Kris hosts a podcast with Dustin, another seller, where they talk about industry leaders and other sellers. So welcome to the podcast today, Kris.Kris 00:00:52  That's quite the intro there. Josh. That's pretty good. I'm gonna have to take a couple notes there and kind of implement those on our own podcast. That was really good.Josh 00:01:00  Hey. Well, you have, you have a good bio yourself.Josh 00:01:03  I think that's that's why it sounds so good to you. So I want to dive in a little bit more with, how you're building that audience with insert cards. You know, we do the same thing with our brand. I don't know that I necessarily see that as, like, overly gray. I mean, you look at like a box of, you know, grab some Clorox wipes. Right. What's on the product label for Clorox wipes? it's the P&G website. Right. So like and they have like a, you know, they're not saying like, hey, come register your warranty per se, but like they have links to their social media, right? They have their icons, they have their website on there. So like I don't think people need to be as scared about that. Right. But what are you seeing working really well when it comes to product inserts?Kris 00:01:49  Well if anything good out of Covid came, it's that people were more adapted to QR codes. So people like start to they know what that is now.Kris 00:02:00  And so QR code like that just not people realize, oh I can scan that. So a QR code insert that is has some type of messaging messaging like so thank you. you know, get your free gift. there's, there's things that, that I'm doing now where, somebody scans it, they go to a landing page. in that landing page, they give name, email address, order ID number, and that just kind of verifies that the order matches with Amazon order. So we're not just getting spammed for free gift. Yeah. And they scan it and we just give a free gift out. And, all they got to do is provide us with their name and their email address. we're think about adding their mailing address there, just to kind of have that for like a backup plan to do postcards. I get a random side note here, but I bought something Amazon like literally 60 days later, I got a gift. Like a postcard in the mail. Really? How'd this? How'd this guy know to send me this postcard for another item? So, like, reverse engineering? That's kind of fun for me.Kris 00:03:07  So I'm trying to figure that out, but, Yeah, the insert scan, QR code landing page. Basic information. No first name, last name, email address, and then the order ID. we're using a tool called, It's going away from me. Zapier or Zapier, however you want to pronounce. Okay, that that, links up order IDs so that, when they type in your ID, it matches correctly with the order ID inside your account. and then from there, we send them a free sample and the free sample. You know, it's just something to, like, get them to engage with us, maybe try another product that we're thinking about launching down the road. it also just allows them to, like, feel warm and fuzzy. So maybe that when that review request does come and that that review request is done by Amazon, we're not sending any more like, hey, give us a five star review. We're just leaving it more like providing value. And whenever they get something from Amazon that says, how would you rate your experience with so-and-so brand? Maybe they think, hey, that was a good brand.Kris 00:04:06  I'll leave a five star review, so we're leaving that alone.Josh 00:04:09  So you're not even touching reviews. You're not.Kris 00:04:11  Even to touch.Josh 00:04:12  It. Yep.Kris 00:04:13  Yeah. Just leaving like just value.Josh 00:04:15  Yeah. I agree 100% with the, you know, not even touching reviews. We we've made the same decision because we have opt in flows and all of that. And everybody's like why don't you ask for a review? And it's like, I'm not even touching it with a ten foot pole.Kris 00:04:28  Because not anymore.Josh 00:04:29  That's that's the one thing that like is if Amazo...

In this episode, Shannon sits down with Dawni Baxter — founder of a boutique marketing agency and a multi-passionate entrepreneur leading the movement in ethical, human-first marketing. Dawni brings a refreshing perspective to an industry filled with noise, inflated promises, and confusing pricing structures. Together, Shannon and Dawni dive into: ✨ How to navigate marketing relationships with confidence ✨ Why transparency and trust are the backbone of ethical marketing ✨ What to look for (and avoid) when hiring a marketing agency or contractor ✨ The power of outsourcing — even when it feels uncomfortable ✨ Why real marketing results require time, patience, and accurate data ✨ How fractional marketing directors provide expert support without bloated retainers Dawni shares why she helped develop the first global regulation for social media managers in the UK, and how her agency champions organic reach and integrity over pushy sales strategies. This conversation is a must-listen for any entrepreneur — especially solo retreat leaders — who wants to grow sustainably, avoid costly marketing mistakes, and build relationships rooted in alignment and trust. Key Takeaways Ethical marketing is about humans first, not hustle culture. Due diligence is essential — marketing professionals are great at marketing themselves. Trust your instincts: if a partner feels off, overpriced, or vague, walk away. There is no standardized pricing in marketing — and that's exactly why transparency matters. Fractional marketing directors are a powerful option for small businesses who need strategy without full-time overhead. Outsourcing is uncomfortable — but it's one of the fastest ways to grow as a founder. Real marketing results come from consistent data over 12–18 months… not overnight "miracles." Quick exits from misaligned relationships often save you more time and money than sticking it out. Listen to This Episode If You: Want to better understand Tantra from a grounded, professional lens. After the worldwide COVID lockdown, we're going to throw Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens under the bus for declining to trust the Feds?  In this week's episode, Michael J. Matt discusses the fracturing of both the MAGA and Traditional Catholic movements. What's the main issue that's dividing this, and how is the fallout from the Charlie Kirk assassination bringing it all to a head? Michael cites testimony from the Hodgetwins, Tim Pool, Candace Owens, Jimmy Doore, Tucker Carlson, the late Charlie Kirk, Max Blumenthal, and Nick Fuentes to show that in this civil war inside Conservatism, Charlie Kirk's terrible assassination was the Fort Sumpter event. And, incredibly, it's all linked to a specific event at the Second Vatican Council. Speaking of which, Cardinal Timothy Dolan puts his faithful on notice this week, that in order to pay the legal defense for multiple pedophile abuse scandals, he's putting the Catholic Church in New York up for sale. Well played, Vatican II! And what about all those Catholic immigrants from the old country who built those churches? And, more importantly, whatever happened to the children and grandchildren of the immigrants who, just sixty years after Vatican II, have permanently vacated the Catholic churches of New York. And what's the solution? Well, watch and see. Now founder of the Vaccine Safety Research Foundation, he walks through why he believes the Covid vaccines failed basic safety standards, how FDA and CDC safety signals were ignored, and why no autopsies were required even as serious adverse events mounted. From offering millions to debate vaccine proponents, to citing government data from the Czech Republic, to accusing regulators and media of protecting an agenda over public health, Kirsch lays out one of the most uncompromising critiques yet of the pandemic response.Love him or hate him, this episode is a raw, data-driven challenge to the phrase that defined an era: “safe and effective.”

This week I had the chance to sit down with two fascinating guests who are at the forefront of bridging the worlds of digital performance marketing and traditional television advertising. Nick Fairbairn, VP of Growth Marketing at Chime, and Andy Schonfeld, CRO at Tatari, walked me through how they've transformed Chime from a pure digital-first, DTC neobank brand built on social and search into a sophisticated advertiser that runs television campaigns with the same performance mindset they apply to Meta and Google. Their partnership has evolved from small linear TV tests six years ago to a comprehensive full-funnel TV strategy that blends brand building with direct response metrics.Nick and Andy shared incredible insights into the evolution of performance TV, from navigating the COVID-era inventory opportunities to understanding why linear TV still matters even as streaming dominates the conversation. They explained how Chime approaches television with a portfolio strategy, balancing premium reach moments like live sports with more targeted direct response placements, and why creative and media planning have become the "new targeting" in a world where precise one-to-one identification remains expensive and imperfect. We also dove into the challenges of measuring TV in a fragmented landscape, the role of AI-driven creative, and whether shoppable TV will actually move the needle or remain a marginal innovation. Key HighlightsHere's a shorter version:

U.S. Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin joins the conversation on two major fronts: foreign policy and federal accountability. Johnson discusses recent developments involving Venezuela, including the U.S. seizure of an oil tanker, President Trump's designation of the Maduro regime as a foreign terrorist organization, and efforts to apply pressure on what he calls an illegitimate regime following a fraudulent election. He says Trump is taking decisive action to confront the crisis and push Venezuela back toward stability and prosperity. The conversation then turns to COVID vaccine oversight, where Johnson states on the record that federal health agencies knowingly concealed vaccine risk signals, including myocarditis. He points to VAERS data, saying agencies initially promoted the system as a trusted safety tool but failed to warn the public and doctors when concerning signals emerged, raising serious questions about transparency, trust, and government responsibility.

I think their story illustrates what it means to be not just an entrepreneurial musician, but an entrepreneur in general. You'll hear about how they've made plans and pursued ideas, while keeping an open ear to what's going on in the market and the world around them, so they can respond with products and services that meet real needs and opportunities. At points this has led them to make pivots. COVID has been one of these points, but we also talk about how the 2008 financial crisis impacted their work and how they bounced back. Here's my conversation with Barbara and Keith.  The transcript and show notes for this episode can be found at MusicStudioStartup.com/episode176.

After a brief post-doc in Miami, I returned to Santa Cruz in 2015 to co-found and direct the UC-Santa Cruz Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program, whose mission is to prepare college students from diverse backgrounds to become the next generation of conservation leaders.   In Santa Cruz, I witnessed and experienced the impacts of the exorbitant housing market. I got involved in a rent control measure campaign and was one of the highest signature gatherers to place the measure on the 2018 ballot. This, along with a commitment to community engagement, prompted me to run for city council. In 2018, I was the highest vote recipient and became one of two African American men voted onto the Santa Cruz City Council for the first time in history. In 2020 I became the first African American man to serve as Mayor of the City of Santa Cruz. In 2022, I was elected to the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors as the Third District Supervisor.  During my time on the council, I focused on sustainable community growth, increasing affordable housing, reducing carbon emissions, public safety reform, amplifying the voices of marginalized community members, connecting people to resources during the pandemic, and most importantly bringing our community together to make Santa Cruz better for everyone. Support the show
