Alrighty then Bookshelvers, settle in with your favourite beverage (and maybe a tasty morsel, or two, for your furry co-listener) because this episode is a HOOT! We're still wiping away tears of laughter reminiscing with our amazing guests, the legendary Jamie and Gemma Pound from UK Sniffer Dogs. We spend a bit of time reminiscing on the hilarious antics and, shall we say, memorable moments from behind-the-scenes shenanigans at Crufts. Let's just say what happens at Crufts, mostly stays at Crufts... until it's shared on a podcast! We also get the fascinating origin story of UK Sniffer Dogs – how sniffing completely turned their dog training world upside down (in the best possible way!) and the incredible positive waves it sends through a dog's behaviour. Spoiler: it's pretty magical. We chat about why making dog training feel less like homework and more like a party is crucial for both ends of the lead, and the sheer joy of finding your dog-loving tribe. But it's not all giggles and games (okay, it mostly is!). We dive into the serious business of making dog training a genuinely inclusive and enjoyable space for everyone. Think less "drill sergeant" and more "super-fun camp counsellor." Jamie and Gemma spill the beans on:Classroom Zen: Smart setup and management so classes are calm, cool, and collected (well, mostly!).Engagement Secrets: Techniques to get those tails wagging and brains buzzing.Scent Work Superpowers: Why scent work is like a magic wand for dogs who find the world a bit much (yep, we're talking about our beloved reactive pups!). Seriously, this stuff is versatile, super safe, and a fantastic outlet for dogs of all ages, creeds, and sniffing abilities. The sniffing adventures don't stop there! We explore some of the innovative tools that make scent work even more exciting, how to make sure every dog can join in (no matter their ability), and the eternal quest for the perfect sniffing venue (because not all lampposts are created equal). And for our fellow dog pros listening, we even peek into the business end of things – making your passion profitable while keeping it accessible. Because sharing the joy of dog training shouldn't break the bank!Naturally, this being "Barks from the Bookshelf," we couldn't let them go without squeezing out some top-tier book recommendations to get your human brains just as engaged as your dog's nose. So, pop in those earbuds, prepare for some laugh-out-loud moments, and get ready to be inspired by the wonderful world of UK Sniffer Dogs!Links:UK Sniffer DogsTrain Your Dog to Save the Environment - WebinarDOGx Tickets

This episode explores how the language we use—like “the migraine” vs. “my migraine” or “autistic” vs. “person with autism”—shapes identity, perception, and even the experience of chronic pain. Drawing from personal reflections, research, and tools like the Curable app, we dive into the impact of word choice on neurodivergence, stigma, and healing. Ultimately, we examine how thoughtful language can create distance from suffering, foster empowerment, and reflect the complex ways we define ourselves.Links for articles: https://disabilityrightstx.org/en/2023/04/13/identity-first-language-vs-people-first-language/?utm_source=chatgpt.comhttps://autisticadvocacy.org/about-asan/identity-first-language/?utm_source=chatgpt.comhttps://www.jpain.org/article/S1526-5900%2823%2900654-5/fulltext?utm_source=chatgpt.comhttps://www.psypost.org/neuroscience-study-reveals-how-language-affects-pain-processing-among-bilingual-individuals/?utm_source=chatgpt.com#google_vignettehttps://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34462809/Link for Pateron: patreon.com/LivingWithAnInvisibleLearningChallengeLink for BetterHelp sponsorship: https://bit.ly/3A15Ac1Links for new podcasts:Shero: Be Your Own Hero Trailer: https://open.spotify.com/show/1O7Mb26wUJIsGzZPHuFlhX?si=c3b2fabc1f334284Chats, Barks, & Growls: Convos With My Pet Trailer: https://open.spotify.com/show/74BJO1eOWkpFGN5fT7qJHh?si=4440df59d52c4522Think Out: Free Your Imagination

Hey there fellow Dog Geek Extraordinaires. A bit of stray off our, well-trodden, dog training and behaviour path today. We invited the wonderful Professor Alex Conner (co-author of ADHD Unpacked and co-host of the ADHD Adults Podcast) onto the podcast. For a while now we've been planning on having a conversation that advocates for compassion and understanding in what it must be like for neurodivergent individuals, particularly those with ADHD diagnosis, navigating a neurotypical world. We also thought it might be helpful to understand how ADHD might impact both trainers and people who might be attending classes or 121's. What unfolded was a fascinating conversation that enabled us to delve into the complexities of ADHD, discussing its impact on communication and relationships, emphasizing the importance of understanding and supporting one another within our relationships and communities. We get to explore the intricate relationship between dog training and ADHD, delve into the parallels in understanding behaviour, the importance of environment and the need for emotional acceptance. We find out how dog body language can inform our understanding of ADHD, the impact of genetics versus environment, and the challenges faced by individuals with ADHD in various settings. Alex effortlessly and expertly addresses misconceptions about ADHD and the societal perceptions that contribute to a stigmas. We hear how things people might take for granted, like the setting of boundaries and self-care, can be unique challenges faced by individuals with ADHD. We explore how personal experiences shape their understanding of self-worth and the importance of community support. Of course, we touch on the complexities of dog training, the nuances of behaviour, and the importance of understanding both dogs and humans and the significance of empathy in fostering connections. On top of all that top notch audio goodness Nat and Steve talk about Alex's book, discuss the challenges of understanding neurodiversity, discuss the arrival of spring and the emotional connection they feel towards nature (particularly a sparrow named Dave). Steve also briefly flirts with the concept of utopia and it's potential pitfalls (through the lens of B F Skinner). We ramble about the importance of emotional awareness, the dynamics of social media, and the influence of culture on behaviour, all while introducing a BRAND NEW segment dedicated to a beloved figure in the bookshelver community…. Neurodivergent individuals experience relationship endings with heightened intensity due to factors like deep emotional investment, trauma sensitivity, and communication differences. Articles by Kristy Forbes, Natalie Roberts, and Laurie Budlong Morse explore these challenges, highlighting the impact of rejection, the struggle for self-identity within neurodiverse relationships, and the importance of fostering connection through understanding and cooperation. These insights emphasize the need for self-compassion, acceptance of impermanence, and the development of effective communication strategies to navigate the complexities of neurodiverse relationships and heal from breakups.Links for articles: https://www.kristyforbes.com.au/blog/Failed%20relationships%20&%20neurodivergencehttps://natalieroberts.com/mystory/https://medium.com/@laurie_budlongmorse/the-4-part-process-neurodiverse-couples-need-to-know-your-relationship-roadmap-a58ffd4d4b34Link for Pateron: patreon.com/LivingWithAnInvisibleLearningChallengeLink for BetterHelp sponsorship: https://bit.ly/3A15Ac1Links for new podcasts:Shero: Be Your Own Hero Trailer: https://open.spotify.com/show/1O7Mb26wUJIsGzZPHuFlhX?si=c3b2fabc1f334284Chats, Barks, & Growls: Convos With My Pet Trailer: https://open.spotify.com/show/74BJO1eOWkpFGN5fT7qJHh?si=4440df59d52c4522Think Out: Free Your Imagination Trailer: https://open.spotify.com/episode/71UWHOgbkYtNoHiUagruBj?si=3d96889cfd2f487b
This is the second part to the interview with Reuben. It is about his teaching for math at a high school in Indianapolis, Indiana. I asked him questions about how his teaching dynamics changed before, during and after the pandemic. Reuben Benzel has been teaching high school mathematics for the past 12 years. He has a BA in Economics from Oberlin College and a MAT from Marian University. Outside of the math classroom, Mr. Benzel sponsors Innovate WithIn, a Shark Tank like competition for high school students sponsored by the StartEdUpFoundation. He participates in the StartEdUp Innovation Educator Fellowship. Outside of the walls of school, Mr. Benzel is interested in trends in educational technology and spends time with his 8 year old daughter Alice. In this episode, we explore the history and impact of Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NVLD), a condition characterized by strong verbal skills but significant challenges with spatial reasoning, motor coordination, and social interpretation. From its identification in the mid-20th century by pioneers like Byron Rourke to personal stories of resilience, we delve into the evolving understanding of NVLD. We also highlight the ongoing struggle for recognition in diagnostic manuals and education systems, as well as efforts by advocates to raise awareness and improve interventions. Whether you're new to NVLD or seeking deeper insights, this episode sheds light on a complex and often misunderstood condition. Up-and-coming Vancouver trans author Harman Burns joins NBN host Hollay Ghadery to talk about Burns' novella, Yellow Barks Spider (Radiant Press, 2024). Yellow Barks Spider takes place in the Canadian prairies, but it seeks to explore this landscape through the intimate lens of a ten-year-old trans kid. Set against the backdrop of the placid countryside, dusty summers and barren winters, it is both a queer coming-of-age novella as well as a deeply psychological character study, reflecting on the nature of memory, trauma, and self-discovery. More about Yellow Barks Spider: In the threadbare prairie town where Kid grew up, life moves slowly. For a troubled ten-year-old, the vast landscape of open skies and barren winters is a place of elemental magic and buried secrets. As the summers pass by, Kid explores a world of weed-choked yards, murky lakes, and a traveling carnival. But when Kid finds himself increasingly haunted by strange spider-infested visions of his next door neighbor's shed, he falls deeper and deeper into his haunted inner world, eventually turning to mind-altering substances to combat his growing torment. Confronted by this psychic pressure, the book itself begins to crumble, splintering into disparate narrative voices as the workings of Kid's imagination become animate, tactile—and language self-destructs. Emerging from this crucible, Kid surfaces into adulthood as she moves through love, sex, and self-discovery as a trans woman. But when she returns to her hometown following the death of a family member, she is forced to reckon with all the fears she once left behind. Yellow Barks Spider is an unforgettable portrait of trauma, isolation, and self-compassion. At its heart, it is a deeply-felt exhumation of memory, love, and the human spirit. About Harman Burns: Harman Burns is a Saskatchewan-born trans woman, filmmaker, sound artist and writer. Her practice is informed by folklore, nature, the occult and bodily transfiguration. Her writing has been published in Untethered Magazine and Metatron Press, and was shortlisted for The Malahat Review's Far Horizons Award for Short Fiction. Burns currently resides on the unceded ancestral territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples (Vancouver). About Hollay Ghadery: Hollay Ghadery is an Iranian-Canadian multi-genre writer living in Ontario on Anishinaabe land. She has her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Guelph. Fuse, her memoir of mixed-race identity and mental health, was released by Guernica Editions in 2021 and won the 2023 Canadian Bookclub Award for Nonfiction/Memoir. Her collection of poetry, Rebellion Box was released by Radiant Press in 2023, and her collection of short fiction, Widow Fantasies, was released with Gordon Hill Press in fall 2024. Her debut novel, The Unraveling of Ou, is due out with Palimpsest Press in 2026, and her children's book, Being with the Birds, with Guernica Editions in 2027.
